Chapter 30

Matt waited on his end of the line, before finally speaking. He spoke in a confident, intimidating voice, the same one he used when he was in the mask. "There's a situation concerning Kasey, that I think you need to be here for. She's been treated as much as she could be, but you know her best."

He finished off his message by explaining that Matthew Murdock, his trusted friend, would be waiting in his apartment with Kasey. He also gave directions to the apartment.

When Tony heard the ring, he was downloading files from another computer. Yeah, he heard the guys but he kept an eye out.

"Friday, tell them I'm busy-"

"I can't sir-"

"Fri, if it's Pepper just explain to her that I'm doing work-"

"It's Daredevil sir."

That made Tony stop immediately. "Answer it but continue the download."

Tony didn't really have time to even greet him before he was being told the situation.

As soon as he said it was Kasey? He canceled the download and had Friday taking notes from the call while scanning the building for Aurora. They needed to go. Now.

"Are you fine with Interweb coming along? We're on a patrol together right now but it's pretty slow." Which, to be fair, it was. "If you aren't then I'll make sure she stays behind."

Matt considered the other coming along, and decided. After all, maybe having a friend nearby would aid Kasey.

"That's fine. For now, I'm sure Kasey could use all the support she can get."

"Alright. We're on our way." He told him as he headed towards Aurora's location. He just had to figure out how to get there.

Matt hung up and kept his phone close, in case he got a call back. He'd have to change before Tony got there, and stash the suit away. "He said he's on his way. I need to get the suit out of sight." He pushed himself up, trying not to stand on his bad leg.

Claire moved to his side. "Lean on me, Foggy can grab you a set of clothes."

Foggy nodded at that and went into his room to find something for him. It didn't take long for him to bring a long sleeved black shirt and some sweatpants out for him and Claire let him help Matt go change and waited, listening out for anyone coming near.

"Thanks." It took a bit longer for Matt to change into the clothes Foggy had picked out, but he did it nonetheless. Even if his aspirin was starting to wear off.

Foggy helped him back to the couch and took the suit. "In the chest?" He asked just to make sure that's where he wanted it. Claire tossed him the mask that had been discarded on the floor and Foggy caught it, adding it to his little pile.

Matt sat down on the couch with a huff, glad to be off his feet, even if he wasn't on them for long in the first place. "Yep. Same place as always. Just make sure the door is closed and it looks somewhat unassuming."

Foggy nodded and easily put it away and made sure it was all hidden and closed up. "Alright, it's all put away." He told him, coming back over and sitting down on the chair across from the sofa with a sigh. "You know what? I could really use a drink from Josie's right about now." He chuckled.

Claire raised an eyebrow at him. "I mean, you aren't wrong but you aren't allowed to until these two heal up a bit more."

Foggy groaned. "Awww, come on Claire!!" He was teasing her and she knew it and a smile crossed her lips.

"Not until I'm able to." She grinned. "Technically the only person I'd let drink right now is Matt and that's only to numb the pain he's in."

"So no casual drinking? Killjoy." Matt replied with a smirk. It was nice to have this, after all that had happened.

"I could get some crutches. How'd I look trying to juggle those and a cane?" He chuckled lightly, imagining how people would react. They stared enough as is, but crutches would be the cherry on top.

Claire sat down across from him. "I'm not letting you run around on crutches." She told him seriously but still with a light tone. "And no drinking, at least not until Kasey can move around and handle herself." She added, her tone still teasing but also a bit serious. "But luckily for you I have the next couple days off so if I really need to, I can stay here and help out." She offered.

"Well, thank you for that. I could probably manage around here by myself, but if Kasey has to stay here for any reason, then I could use the help." Matt spoke honestly.

Claire nodded. "You are also off from work unless you can do it here." She told him.

Foggy groaned. "Karen's gonna have so many questions- oh shit!" Foggy sat up. "We were supposed to have that meeting when you were back at the office but... guess that's gonna be awhile, huh?"

"Well... maybe we'll be able to have it sooner rather than later." Matt said vaguely, before turning to Claire.

"I'm going to have to make a big excuse for this one. But I guess I can look over papers and things here, maybe take some client calls." He sighed. "That is, if we get any."

Foggy tilted his head, confused but nodded at what Matt said. "Though to be fair, the whole mugged scenario would probably work. The only issue being with that though is... well, Kasey."

Claire nodded. "I... I think she's like you in a way, Matt. She may not be able to see like most people but she can definitely see. At least most of the time. Or is really good about acting that way. If she sees your leg, she might put two and two together, if she hasn't already."

"For now, I'll use our bad luck to my advantage. While she's out, she won't know a thing. But if she wakes up, I'll try to avoid letting her see my leg at all." Matt explained, before adding on. "If push comes to shove, the truth comes out."

Claire nodded at that. "I'll do my best to try to help with that if I can."

"Thanks, I really appreciate all your guys' help today. Couldn't have done it without you two." Matt thanked them.

Foggy nodded. "Of course man. Neither of us were gonna just leave you here without help." He replied seriously but was smiling a bit.

Claire nodded. "At this point I'm pretty sure I'm legally bound to make sure you don't die." She jested with a smirk.

"I mean, I could write you up a legally binding contract." Matt bantered, feeling a bit better than he was earlier. The relaxation helped him not to stay as tense, which in turn helped his aches.

She laughed, shaking her head. "When you know that kinda thing much better than me? No thanks."

Foggy laughed. "Imagine him putting a clause that you have to get him coffee once a month-" He grinned.

While they were laughing and enjoying each other's company, Kasey stirred. Just a little bit. She shifted around in the bed, but settled back down almost just as quick.

"And the good coffee too. No offense to the office coffee." Matt grinned, finding that he really should do this more often. Even if a small part of him knew otherwise. He heard the shifting and perked his head up a bit, but returned to the conversation upon hearing her settle down.

Foggy laughed at that. "Listen man, I'm not the one who would be offended!" He grinned. He noticed Matt perk up but just as quickly refocus so he didn't question it.

Claire chuckled. "Is it really that bad?"

Kasey was still while she slept for a little bit but started to shift around again but she wasn't settling back down as quickly this time.

She kept tossing and turning, or at least trying to but with the way she was hooked up it was difficult but she finally settled back down into a calm state after a minute.

Or at least a calmer one. Her steady heartbeat had spiked a little bit but it slowly settled back.

"Pretty much the definition of 'a crappy cup of coffee'." Matt responded, once again hearing Kasey's stirring.

"She keeps stirring, then settling back down. Same with her heart too."

Claire glanced toward the bedroom. "Well that either means she's waking up or she's just shifting. Both are better than her being completely still." She replied.

Kasey shifted again but it didn't seem as fidgety this time. She took a deep breath as she repositioned herself. She instinctively flinched a little in her sleep but relaxed just as quickly.

"Maybe she's dreaming of something. She's asleep, but moves suddenly at times." Matt spoke, taking another drink from the water cup he had received earlier.

Claire nodded. "Also possible." She agreed. "If she starts moving too much though she might pull something loose so I'll have to keep an eye on that."

"Hopefully she calms down. Last thing she needs is nightmares trapping her in her own mind." He shook his head. The girl had been through enough.

Claire nodded. "Hopefully if she does start having one, we can wake her." She replied with a sigh.

"That is, if she's even able to wake up." Matt worried for Kasey. He truly did. After all, she was still just a kid in his eyes.

Claire sighed. "I can probably find a way to force it if we have to but I'm not-"

Suddenly Matt stopped hearing Claire and instead focused on Kasey.

She was still as she slept but suddenly her body tensed a bit and her heartbeat spiked. For a moment it seemed like it was just for that one moment but then it didn't go down. Instead it went up a bit higher until it suddenly spiked hard.

Matt tilted his head towards Kasey, squinting slightly as he heard what was happening with Kasey. He didn't mention anything until he knew that it wasn't going back down.

"Somethings wrong. Her heartbeat spiked, but it's not going down-" He suddenly pushed himself up off the couch, standing mainly on his good leg. "It's spiking higher!"

Claire was quickly standing up and trying to push him back down. "Matt, you need to sit down, I will check on her but you can not be on your leg." She told him firmly.

Foggy was quickly on his feet too. "Let Claire try to take care of this, okay?"

Kasey wasn't tossing and turning like she had been earlier which was probably a bad sign with a spike that high and maintaining it.

"I get that you guys are worried for me too, but we need to focus on her right now. She's not even thrashing like she was earlier, but her heart spike should've had some reaction." Honestly! Matt was beginning to get irritated by them basically putting him in a bubble!

Claire took a deep breath, trying not to just snap at him. She knew he was scared for her but she couldn't tend to both of them at the same time. She hesitated but Foggy grabbed hold of Matt, making no effort to make him sit but rather let him lean on him so Claire could step away without worrying about him collapsing.

She nodded at Foggy. "I'll go see what's wrong." She hurried into the room and saw Kasey in a pale cold sweat, her heart rate toeing the line of safe and dangerous way too close for her comfort. She was also breathing irregularly.

She gently shook Kasey's arm. "Hey, Kasey, if you can hear me, I need you to take a deep breath. Okay?" She tried.

Kasey didn't react to her but after a moment her heart rate dropped down almost alarmingly fast but balanced a bit back to a more consistent normal.

Claire sighed softly but stayed at her side, unsure if it'd worsen either way.

Although he couldn't see it, he knew Claire was probably fed up with him constantly trying to get up, but at that point he didn't really care. Matt begrudgingly leaned on Foggy, still listening to Kasey's breathing and heart rate. "It just dipped and evened out. Maybe talking to her is helping?"

Foggy glanced at him. "Maybe?" He replied, unsure himself.

Claire watched for another minute before standing up and sighing. She headed back towards the door. "Okay, I think it's-"

Another spike right back onto that dangerous line. Claire whirled around her eyes wide. "Woah, hey-!" She was back at her side as it worsened again. "It's okay, it's okay. I'm still right here. You're still safe. Just breathe, okay?" She tried to reassure her.

Kasey froze up for a moment, and for that moment that felt like it lasted much longer than it should've. Matt could've sworn her heart and breathing stopped.

Matt felt himself holding his breath, listening desperately for her to return to normal. He strained his hearing, even if it didn't do anything. He felt like he had to do something.

"Is she okay-?"

Claire didn't respond to him for a moment but he could hear her doing something. "Come on, Kasey. Breathe."

Nothing but Matt could faintly hear her heartbeat but it seemed to be the exact opposite now. It was far too quiet but she wasn't breathing.

He gritted his teeth, hearing how faint her heartbeat was. "Somethings not right." He muttered, attempting to pull away from Foggy and head back to the bedroom. Maybe it would be louder if he was closer. Although, he knew better than to believe that. That short of distance wouldn't make much difference.

Foggy stumbled when Matt tried to pull away. "Woah, hey. Claire said you can't be on your leg, Matt-" He told him, keeping a grip on him.

"I know what Claire said, Foggy. But Kasey isn't breathing and her heartbeat is impossibly quiet." He argued back.

Foggy took a deep breath. "And you think going in there will help somehow?" He asked back. He was worried about Kasey, yes, but he also kept his voice steady. He didn't want to argue with Matt, he just wanted him to think it through for a minute.

Matt stopped, thinking over Foggy's words. That was true, he couldn't help like Claire could, and all he would be doing was checking on her. He supposed that's all it was, really. He just needed to know it would be alright, and somehow he thought being there would work. With a deep sigh, he reached up and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Sorry, you're right."

Foggy stared at him for a long moment. "... Will it help you?" He asked him. "If you can stay in there but out of Claire's way?"

Claire had gotten Kasey to start breathing again but it was still weak. But it was progress.

"All I want is to know she's okay. Like you said, I won't be any help to her if I'm in there." Still tense, but more accepting, he continued. "I can hear everything anyways.."

Foggy nodded a bit at that. "But I know you're gonna keep instinctively getting up to check on her if you aren't at her side and Claire will have to knock you out herself-" He joked lightly. "Do you want me to help you in there? Cause if it helps you keep from trying to get up as much then I will."

Claire finally got Kasey somewhat back to normal again and ran a hand through her hair, glancing at the doorway where she heard the boys. She sighed softly. "If it'll make you stay off your leg then you can come in." She leaned back. "But whoever you called better get here soon, it's getting harder for me to stabilize her..." She admitted.

"I would like to see her try." He chuckled dryly and he nodded, glad they found some sort of middle ground to work with. He got to be there, and they got him to stay off his leg. With Foggy's help, he managed to make it into his room without putting much weight on his leg. "They should be here soon. I know he has the means to get here fast."

Foggy helped him to the chair Claire had dragged in earlier and helped him prop his leg up onto the edge of the bed.

Claire nodded, watching the monitor. "It seems it's evened back out for now. I don't know if it'll stay that way." She told him. "Foggy would you wait out there for them?"

He nodded and disappeared out of the room.
