Chapter 29

Continuing on, Aurora found the other end of the vent and popped the cover off, dropping out of the vent.

She landed in a hallway with rooms down both sides.

"Great. I've landed in a fricken labyrinth." Aurora looked both ways, before picking a random door and opening it.

It seemed to be an office of some sort. It seemed pretty straight forward. Desk, computer, white board, normal office stuff.

"I guess even bad guys can have normal looking offices." She mumbled to herself, deciding to snoop through the desk. A stinging in her side reminded her of the gash in her side.

There wasn't much in the desk- oh wait! A clipboard full of notes!

Aurora held one hand against her side, the other being used to flip through the notes on the clipboard. For now, she hoped she could get a moment's peace to do some more snooping before heading out again.

The notes were... odd. Theories and test results on different animals it seemed. Something about trying to turn a cat into a dog or a pigeon to a chicken.

It felt as though she had stepped right into the twilight zone. All these things that were being worked on... seemed so unreal! Then again, she hadn't thought that people could get powers from a spider bite not so long ago.

Most of the tests didn't go well but slowly started making progress. Hybrids, not full changes, seemed to be where they were now.

"Great." She continued reading through the notes, before tucking the clipboard back where it belonged and closing the desk drawer. She headed back towards the hall, peeking her head out before fully stepping out.

The hallway seemed empty still but she could hear them searching downstairs.

Aurora continued down the hall, away from the voices. She kept her ears open for any sounds, but then again, she didn't have as great hearing as Kasey did.

A quick glance around informed her that this floor was unfamiliar, and wasn't the same one that had started out on.

There were more offices as she moved around. Seemingly that's what a lot of them were but she came across a large room with no windows, two metal doors and a hand scanner.

"Finally something different." Since she could see the scanner, it'd be pretty easy to break into. She took hold of the scanner, popping the interface off and messing around with the wires.

It didn't take long for the doors to slide open, revealing another lab. This one was different however.

Instead of surgical, it seemed more like a genetics lab.

Cages for different animals were around the room, a corner or two with chemistry sets, and a few stasis tanks big enough for humans to reside in.

It seemed to be empty.

Aura hesitated in the doorway, staring into the room. It was bone chilling, to say the least. She finally stepped into the room, stepping over to one of the chemistry sets. She recognized a few of the chemicals, but the others were unknown to her.

There was a cabinet of vials with different labels written on them. All different colors as well.

She reached out a hand, turning a few of the vials to observe them. "Maybe if I drink one I'll get llama powers next." She smirked at her own joke.

There was a dog, cat, rabbit, snake, a couple of birds, a scorpion, even a few different spiders.

She had an idea what all of them were for, considering the notes she had just read over. Stepping to the side of the cabinet, she took a hold of the sides and shoved, sending the cabinet and its vials towards the floor. A loud mix from the thud and glass echoed out of the room.

Smoke flared across the floor in different colors, mixing at her feet as it covered the whole floor. It was actually really pretty to look at. And best of all, she seemed to be just fine.

Aurora stepped back from the colloid of colors, careful not to breathe any of it in, but glad to take in the view. After all, it was very pretty. She didn't stick around for long, however, not wanting to be around if anyone came to investigate the noise.

She heard them getting close, now searching the same floor.

"They sure are persistent..." Aura attempted to go in the opposite direction, away from the sounds of the others. She held her side and fled, dipping into an adjacent hallway.

They were still looking around for her but she found more offices.

"Offices upon offices. It's almost like they purposely built this like a maze." She said in a hushed voice, continuing down the halls.

And low and behold- More offices!!! Yay!! Though the one at the end of the hall looked to be another lab.

"Good lord!" She exasperated, before making a beeline for the lab at the end. She could still hear the people behind her searching for her, so when she entered the lab she shoved her another chair under the door handle.

This lab looked like a mechanics lab. Kinda similar to Tony's at the tower, actually.

"Okay. I know my way around a lab." Aura nodded confidently, poking around this room as well. She was glad that one of her strengths was being nosy.

There were all kinds of interesting looking tools or projects with clipboards and files nearby.

She searched through the papers and files, hoping to find somethings of interest that she could take with her when she left. That is, if the others didn't find her first.

One of the files caught her eye. 3818151415.

She arched a brow in interest, and picked up the file. After a bit of debating with herself, she cracked it open to peek at the contents. After all, Tony wasn't here to tell her no or anything.

Inside it spoke of a device that a young lady had made. A pocket watch that seemed to allow the user to manipulate time to a degree. A Miss Emilia Amaya. They were hoping to make some adjustments to the design.

"Time travel, huh? That's some neat trick." Being a huge fanatic of all things space and time, the file intrigued her. She folded it and tucked it into her suit for later perusing.

There was another folder that didn't have a name written on it but was sitting nearby.

Aurora picked up the other folder, flipping it open to read what was inside. As she did, she kept an ear open to keep tabs on the guys searching the floor.

This one was talking about metal claws of some kind. They'd be able to cut through a lot of things.

"This one's a little more realistic." She read through the file, memorizing quite a bit of it before placing it back where it belonged. Creeping back over to the door, she pressed her ear against it to listen.

She heard the men roaming the halls, searching for her and they were getting close.

Aura groaned and stepped back into the room. Not sure where to go, she began searching for a way out, or a hiding spot.

They were getting closer and closer before trying to open the door and realized it was blocked. "Hey! Over here!"

"Oh great." Just from a quick glance around the room, she couldn't see any vents. Then again, many of the lab tables and cabinets were pressed up against the walls. She took to pulling out the tables from the walls, until finally! She found one.

It wasn't very big but she might be able to squeeze inside.

"Good thing I'm not claustrophobic..." Aurora took hold of the vent cover and yanked, pulling it clean off. The beating on the door encouraged her to speed up, and she started into the vent.

The door was finally kicked in and they rushed to try to snag her before she got too far but she was too quick despite the small space.

They swore and called to have people keeping an eye on the vents.

She stuck to the inside of the vent, just far enough inside that they couldn't reach. God, this sucks. I feel like a mole running back to my hidey hole. She thought to herself, before continuing on her way. She planned to pop out of the other end before they got there.

She could hear them moving around trying to find her as she crawled along.

Aurora continued through the vent at a slow pace, stopping every now and then to take a breather. Eventually she made it to the other end of the vent, and pressed her face to the opening to try and see if anyone was on the other side.

It seemed to be clear. No one in sight.

Aurora had no room to turn around, so she gave the vent cover a quick jab with her fist, sending it flying into the hallway. Popping out of the vent, she took a moment to take in her surroundings. All this vent crawling was tiring her out.

And guess what she found! More hallways- no, wait, it seemed she's ended up back in the observation rooms.

"That's convenient." She kept a hand pressed over her side, and walked close to the wall as she went down the hallways, peeking into rooms as she went.

More offices!! But... These ones were different. They had monitors observing other rooms. Like the ones they were kept in but... without the treadmills. It looked like the ones the subjects were kept in.

Now she was getting somewhere. Some of these rooms seemed familiar, like the ones she had seen in the tapes and pictures.

All of them seemed empty, no current subjects but there were computers in each one.

Where did they all go? She wondered to herself. They couldn't all have escaped, and she feared the worst, that they all might have perished.

She saw a file sitting out on one of the desks.

She glanced around before making her way towards the desk. "Might as well." Picking up the file, she flipped it open to read.

'Subject 12. The subject had put up a fight when we obtained them but are currently contained in the cell. We plan on starting testing tomorrow.'

"They probably put up a fight for a reason." She shook her head, continuing to read the file.

'Day 2, testing started. Subject seemed to have an allergic reaction. We got it under control quickly but we now must wait to see if it worked.'

"Allergic reaction to what?" She wondered aloud, reading through the file further.

'Day 5. Subject has shown no signs of the test working. We are trying a different type and dosage.'

"These poor people..." She whispered, flipping forward a few days in the notes.

'Day 8. The subject unfortunately will no longer be able to be studied here. They are moving them to another facility. A shame as they were showing a lot of promise...'

The mention of another facility piqued her interest, but the lack of information on what tests they did disappointed her. She supposed they kept that stuff tightly under wraps. Closing the folder, she was careful to put it back as close to the way it was when she found it.

She could hear the men on the floor above her, still searching for her.
