Chapter 28
Time passed quickly, for Matt at least, as he slept most of it away. It had been a good few hours into his rest when he was stricken awake, a strange bout of dreams having awoken him.
Foggy was up this time around and noticed him jerk awake in a cold sweat. "Woah, woah, hey, it's okay-" Foggy was at his side, his hand on his uninjured shoulder, trying to lay him back down. "It's alright, you're safe."
Matt found himself panting, as if he had just ran a long way to get here. He resisted Foggy at first, but slowly laid back down, forcing his breath and heart to steady. He was confused for a brief moment, before his memories of the previous day returned to him. "Sorry, I- I don't know what that was.."
Foggy sighed in relief when he became aware of his surroundings. "It's alright. You feeling okay? You're pretty pale..." He asked him, looking concerned.
Matt nodded, even though his wounds were still aching. "I'm alright. Just- just a nightmare." He responded, an ache in his voice.
Foggy looked sympathetic but nodded. "You need anything?" He offered him. "Claire's in with Kasey right now."
"Maybe a cup of water, and some aspirin." Matt muttered, reaching up to run a hand through his hair. Ugh, he felt cold and clammy.
Foggy chuckled a little bit but nodded. "Sure." He went over to the counter, grabbed an apple, the aspirin and water and brought them over. "Eat something first." He told him.
Matt nodded and sat up slowly, as to not make himself more lightheaded than he already was. "Thank you. I didn't realize until you said that, but we haven't eaten all day." He chuckled dryly. "The whole reason we went out was to get groceries." He took the items graciously, and took a bite from the apple.
Foggy stared at him. "Seriously? We could've gotten you both something had you realized earlier." Matt could hear the grin in his voice though.
"Sorry, I was busy trying to keep myself conscious." Matt jokingly replied with a smirk. He finished the apple off and took the aspirin with a couple drinks of water.
Foggy rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. I suppose that's important too." He grinned. He was happy Matt felt well enough to banter with him. It made him a bit more reassured about the situation.
"Oh, by the way, Matt is staying at my place until you two get on your feet again." It felt weird talking about him as if he wasn't there but he wasn't sure if Kasey was up.
"Oh is he now? That's very nice of him." Matt replied, 'looking' over at Foggy. "Although, I feel bad kicking him out of his own apartment."
He felt worse not telling Kasey about himself. Although, it was better that way, for now at least.
He chuckled a bit. "Nah, I'm sure he doesn't mind, it'll be like college all over again!" He teased him.
Claire woke up from her place in a chair in Matt's room and stretched, wincing a bit but noticed Kasey was still out and moved to check on her. "Kasey?" She called gently but she didn't move. "Hey, Kasey, I need you to wake up for a bit, okay?"
Still no response. Claire shook her shoulder a little but nothing. Her heart skipped a beat and quickly felt for a pulse. She felt it racing under her fingers but it was palpitating. She furrowed eyebrows in concern. "Kasey, you need to get up, okay?" Claire tried again but Kasey only shook a little bit, as if shivering.
Claire was racking her brain for what could possibly be wrong and hesitated before stepping out of the room and stopped when she saw them both up. "Oh-" Matt could hear her heart racing from anxiety.
Matt was about to say something else when he heard Claire begin to panic. Before he could comment on that, Claire appeared out of his room.
"Claire? Is something wrong with Kasey?" He asked, his own past panic being pushed aside for Kasey's.
Claire hesitated but nodded. "She, uh, isn't responding." She admitted after a minute. "I'm not entirely sure why yet. She's shaking and her heartbeat is out of control." She explained. "It shouldn't be blood loss or anything. She was stable before but now she just won't wake up..."
Foggy's eyes widened and glanced at Matt, uncertainly.
Matt furrowed his brows in confusion and uncertainty, his mind racing to think of the possibilities. His mind landed on the apple core he had just recently placed onto the coffee table.
"I don't know if this could be it, but could it be because she hasn't eaten in a while? Though that doesn't explain why it's so severe..."
Claire looked confused before thinking for a moment and nodding. "That could be it. I can try that but you're right, it doesn't make sense why it's this bad." She grabbed one of the apples and cut it into slices, putting them in a small bowl. "I'll see if I can get her to at least try to eat." She told them before disappearing into the room.
She shook Kasey a little bit again. "Kasey, I brought you some apple slices, can you sit up and eat them for me?" She asked her.
Kasey didn't stir still.
Claire was getting nervous. She didn't want to have to take her to the hospital but... "Kasey, please. I need you to wake up." She tried shaking her shoulder again.
She just shifted from the forced movement, still unresponsive.
Claire swore under her breath and tried to think of what to do. She didn't have the stuff to set up an IV drip but... She might be able to go get some.
One more time. Please. "Kasey, we need you to wake up... Please." She pleaded, tears filling her eyes but only the faint sound of her shallow and slow breathing.
She ran her hand through her hair before setting the bowl aside and coming back out. "She won't wake up. I've tried shaking her awake five times now... I... I'm going to get the stuff to get her an IV drip going. Foggy, I need you to keep an eye on her, if she wakes up, make her eat that apple and don't let her go back to sleep."
Foggy nodded firmly at that as Claire moved to grab her jacket from the coat rack by the door. Her heart was racing.
Matt's own heart began to race, as he heard everyone else's hearts pick up their pace. He listened for Kasey's heartbeat and breathing, unfortunately finding that they were terribly irregular. They couldn't have gotten back home, been safe and made it this far just for it all to come crashing down on them. They couldn't.
"Please be quick Claire."
"I'll be as fast as I can. I promise." She disappeared out the door, closing it behind her.
Foggy stood up and looked at Matt. "I'm gonna keep an eye on her, okay?"
Matt nodded solemnly. "Let me know if anything changes with her."
"I will." He agreed as he went to check on her. He stepped into the room and saw her lying on the bed, unmoving. He froze for a moment before going over. "Kasey? I don't know if you can hear me but Claire's gonna be back soon with something to help, okay?" He told her, his voice soft.
She still didn't respond to him, unmoving.
He sighed and sat down nearby. He hoped Claire got back soon.
As much as Matt tried to stave off the panic growing in his chest, he couldn't. He was afraid that she wouldn't make it, and was blaming himself over and over again. He could hear her heart and breathing, and it only furthered his panic.
Foggy stayed loyally by her side until he heard the door open to the apartment again and Claire came in with a bag slung over her shoulder and a metal IV pole at her side.
She was dripping wet as it had started raining. "Any changes?" She asked as she quickly took her jacket off.
Foggy poked his head out of the room. "She's breathing quieter but that's all I can tell." He replied.
Kasey was still unconscious on the bed, her breathing was near silent to Foggy at his point. It was slow and quiet and her usually fast consistent heartbeat was growing more irregular. It'd race for a bit then slow down to almost a normal heart beat and back to racing.
Matt was struggling to keep his composure, and sat straight up when Claire returned. "Her heartbeat is irregular. It keeps speeding up and slowing down, over and over again."
Claire swore under her breath and moved towards the room, keeping the door open so she could hear Matt.
Foggy helped her set up what she needed then rejoined Matt out there while she finished setting up the IV and she brought a small heart monitor as well.
Claire kept it silent as not to stress Matt out further and just watched it for a bit, frowning at the irregular movements. She looked at the IV Drip that was now hooked up to her and sighed.
"We will only know if this will help if we wait." She explained, leaning in the doorway, watching Kasey closely.
Matt hated the waiting game. But if it was for Kasey's sake, he'd wait as long as was necessary. He could still hear Kasey's heartbeat, and it continued to stress him out. It was strange how such a quiet sound upset him so.
"I can't believe I didn't notice sooner." If he had been awake, maybe he would've.
Claire's eyes softened towards him. "You are just as roughed up as she is. You can't blame yourself for not noticing when you were barely functioning in the first place." She gently scolded him.
"She's right. None of us knew anything was wrong and Kasey certainly didn't portray anything being wrong until she passed out." Foggy agreed.
"She was under my care, and all of this happened to her." Matt argued. He went to put his head into his hands, only to find he still had that damned devil's mask still on. With a quick pull, he lifted it off and dropped it to the floor.
Claire frowned a bit at that as she stood there. "Again, it's not your fault. She was the one who got into that mugger fight which is why she even ended up here." She pointed out.
"You didn't know that she'd run off, let alone get snatched." She came over and knelt next to him, putting her hand on his. "Matt, the reason she is here and able to be taken care of is because of you. Had you not been able to get to her and help her, who knows what they would've done to her." She looked down at her lap.
"I said earlier how you were dead without her? The same goes the other way. She needed you to be there. They would've overwhelmed her otherwise."
Foggy watched the two of them, moving to watch the heart monitor for Claire while she talked to Matt.
Matt let out a defeated sigh, the stress and aches simply getting the better of him. "I know you're right. There's just part of me that doesn't want to accept it."
She gently squeezed his hand. "I know. That's why we're here to tell you things like that." She chuckled faintly. "People are their own worst enemy sometimes. Logically they know the truth but emotions are often louder and make us doubt the truth. But it goes the other way too sometimes..." she acknowledged. "Gut feelings aren't always logical at first."
Foggy nodded. "Like when we set out on our own to make a law firm. Logically, it sounded like a dumbass decision. But we both knew in our souls it was the right one."
Matt heard Foggy's comment and chuckled dryly. If anyone knew how to lighten a situation, it was Foggy. Matt was just glad to have both of them there, to help both Kasey and himself.
"Thanks. I really owe you guys one."
"I'll add it to your tab." Claire teased him lightly. "We'll figure this out." She promised.
Foggy nodded at that. "We just gotta figure out what the issue or issues are first."
"Hopefully nothing serious. But by the way everything is happening, I'm starting to think otherwise." Matt confided, tuning in once again to Kasey's heartbeat.
It was still weak and flickering between fast and slow but it had started to slowly even out. Her breathing was still really quiet but at least her heartbeat was becoming a bit more regular.
Claire nodded. "We can only wait and keep an eye on her."
Matt didn't respond for a little while, still listening to her heart to listen to the pattern. He was relieved to know it was getting better, even if it was just a little bit. "Sounds like her heart is evening out. Not by much, but it is."
Claire sighed in relief. "That's good. Hopefully that means it'll even out soon." She leaned back.
Foggy glanced at the monitor and nodded. "Yeah, it's getting better." He confirmed.
"That's a relief." Matt sighed out, leaning back against the couch. He tried not to focus on the pain from his wounds, instead focusing on Kasey's heartbeat. He was hoping, praying that it grew strong and steady.
He heard it starting to grow back to a much more steady beat the longer she was on the IV but showed no signs of waking.
"I'm glad to hear the IV is working. But she's still out." Matt spoke, half wondering if he should call Tony back. After all, he should know, shouldn't he?
Suddenly he heard her take a deeper breath than she had been and slightly shift a bit, a small hum coming from her while she slept.
It caught Foggy's attention too. He hesitated before going over and gently shaking her shoulder. "Kasey?"
She made a small noise when he shook her, sorta pulled away from him and curled up more.
He hesitated before poking his head out of the room. "She's moving now, not awake, but responsive somewhat." He explained.
Matt held his breath, hearing her move and respond. He couldn't help but crack a small smile, excited to hear her come around. "That's good. At least we're making progress."
Claire nodded. "It's a good sign." She agreed. But she knew just because Kasey was taking steps forward, that didn't mean she couldn't take more back.
"Let's just let her rest for a bit. I don't want to risk waking her before her body is ready." She told them.
Foggy nodded and pulled a chair over to where he could chat with them but still keep an eye on the monitor just in case.
Matt nodded, knowing it was for the best that they let her be for now. He decided to put off calling Tony, just until Kasey was awake.
The three of them could only wait and keep an eye on her while she rested.
About an hour passed when Kasey started to shift more than she had been. Claire quickly went to check on her. "Kasey?" She asked gently.
Kasey's eyes slowly fluttered open and glanced towards Claire. "C-Claire?" Her voice was quiet and tired.
Claire let out a sigh of relief. "Y-Yeah. How are you feeling?"
Kasey stared at her for a moment, processing what she said. "I..." She started, trying to focus. "I dunno?" She replied, her speech slurring a bit.
Claire chuckled faintly. "Can you tell me what happened?"
Kasey was quiet, kinda staring off into space before Claire tapped her leg. "H-Huh??" she remembered what Claire asked. "O-oh uh..." She furrowed her eyebrows, trying to remember. "I... I made the... the, umm... silk... thing?? Then I noticed I was..." Her voice was still a bit slurred and she trailed off.
"Kasey?" Claire asked, trying to get her attention back but Kasey slumped back to the bed, unconscious again. She shook her slightly. "Hey, no, Kasey I need you to stay awake-"
But Kasey didn't respond. Not even a noise again. She was completely limp when she tried to shake her awake.
Claire swore under her breath and turned to check the heart monitor. It seemed to be steady for a moment but she watched it start to drop lower and lower at a slow but steady pace. She bit her lip. None of this made sense. She should be stabilizing if it was just low blood sugar...
Oh how he wished he wasn't bound to this stupid couch. Then he could go and actually check on her. He heard her begin to speak and wished to go to her, only for his heart to drop upon hearing her begin to worsen once more. "What's wrong? I thought she was getting better?"
"I-I don't know!" She called back, checking her over. Everything was set up right so why was it not working? She watched the heart monitor pick up for a moment only to drop down more. One step forward, two steps back...
"It-It doesn't make sense! It was helping but now it's as if she's not getting any but she is!" She ran a hand through her hair as she stepped back trying to understand before stopping.
"I..." she hesitated. She wanted to help, there had to be an answer! She crossed her arms, one hand covering her mouth while she thought. "M-Maybe it's the blood loss? If she fought as well, that's probably when she pulled the stitches... She's probably been bleeding as long as you have." She didn't look away from the machines.
"Maybe not as much but enough to cause problems?" She shrugged helplessly. "I don't have the means to help with that without taking her to a hospital... And if it's not that then... Then I don't know if I can help her..." She admitted, her heart racing a bit at the thought.
She reached out and shook her a bit again. "Kasey, I need you to wake up..."
Nothing.
"It was working before!" Matt was exhausted, and now the panic was returning to claw at his heart. Why wasn't it working now? There had to be some sort of reason for it!
"She started fighting shortly after I did, so she's been bleeding for quite some time." He told Claire, before beginning to think to himself. If a little bit had begun to help, maybe more would?
"What if you turned up the dosage?"
She turned to look at him from her place in the doorway. She hesitated. "I... I can try that but usually you're not supposed to do more than this at a time..." She explained. "But I can try." She agreed, moving over to the IV drip and very carefully adjusted it to let more flow at a time.
She only did it a little bit more cause she didn't want to risk overwhelming her system but when she saw her heart stop slowing down but stayed at the current pace she carefully gave it more and more to work with until she saw her heart rate starting to pick back up to at least a safer place for most people.
She let out a sigh of relief at the sight but looked confused. "I'm not sure how her body is managing to handle it at that flow but it's at least keeping her in a safe zone now." She informed them before coming and leaning against the doorway. "I-... Does Foggy know about her?" She asked, making Foggy turn to her and hesitate.
"Depends what you're asking???" He replied, uncertainly.
"Uh, the..." She tried to think of a way to explain without outing her if he didn't. "The silk fabric she brought, you know where she gets that?" She tried.
Foggy blinked before laughing a bit. "Yeah. Uh, yeah. I saw her using it earlier."
Claire sighed in relief at that. "Okay. So, I'm pretty sure she's enhanced at this point." She explained. "But," She hesitated. "That means I have no idea how to properly care for her. For all I know, this could act like it's working but it's not." She admitted. "I just don't know anything about her and I'm worried that I might do something that will make things worse."
After hearing Kasey's heart begin to steady, another sigh of relief escaped Matt's lips. He didn't hold on to any hope however, as the last time that happened it all went downhill.
Matt heard Claire out, considering his options. He pinched the bridge of his nose, and sighed once more. "I could call someone who knows her better than we do."
Claire turned to him and noticed his hesitation and frowned. "Are you sure?" she replied. "Unless you wanna hang out in your suit or come up with a reason for being shot- Which honestly? Mugging would be a pretty easy explanation," she shrugged. "But either way you're risking revealing yourself."
Foggy nodded. "And by extension, us." He pointed out. "But," He took a deep breath. "If you trust them that much then I will too."
Claire nodded as well. "Same here."
Matt reconsidered his choice, but ultimately it was better for Kasey if he called. "I'll find a way to explain all this away." He motioned to his wounds. He planned on hiding the smaller ones, and like Claire said, blaming the leg on a mugging gone wrong.
After all, muggers targeting a blind man made sense. Matt located his burner phone, clicking through his contacts until he found Tony's. Hopefully he wasn't busy...
"When you guys find out who it is, I think you'll trust them too."
Claire and Foggy exchanged looks but both nodded, waiting for the call.
