Chapter 27
Aurora found a room not too far away, with some file cabinets and computer desks lining the walls. She peeked inside, before entering and going towards one of the computers. As she logged on, she wondered to herself. Where is everyone?
The computer screen lit up the dark room as she logged on. It was asking for a password.
She sighed. "Figures." She got to work, deciphering any type of code she could to try and break the passcode, or even better, bypass it completely.
It took a few attempts but she was able to log in successfully. The whole computer was available to her now.
"Bingo." Aurora snapped her fingers, immediately delving into the files and works stored on the computer.
There were four files that caught her attention. Projects with numbers at the end. Four of them recently opened.
Project: 1131451991
Project: 2051251615182012091514
Project: 1618531571492091514
and Project: 1918-25144518
Aurora hummed in thought, a short round of eenie meenie minie mo playing in her mind before she selected the third file. "Hm. Lucky number three."
She saw a couple of files talking about different concepts and methods for... future sight?? Or something like that. Also mentioning a spider at one point for some reason...
Aurora felt chills go down her spine as she read through the file. Anything with a power like that would be a handful, but a spider-person who worked with the Black-Out corporation? Formidable. She closed out and opened the first one.
This one talked about a device. One they would use on future subjects to help control them. A memory wiper. It was still marked as Work in progress.
Once again, Aurora read through the file, horror seeping into her mind. Whatever was on this computer, she'd be taking as evidence against these people. Once she was done, she closed it out and opened the second file.
This one spoke of an idea of a spider that could vanish and reappear at will but in a different place. So... teleporting?
Aurora bit the inside of her cheek as she read through that file, before continuing on to the last one. Whoever these people are, they've got some wacky experiments going on.
The last one was talk of someone who could control air movements. Wasn't a spider this time but talk of being able to manipulate the air around someone in such a way that they could suffocate them in a completely open space, flight, even cause natural disasters if trained right.
"Oh, an air bender. That's completely logical." Once she had read through the file, she closed it out and saved everything to a flash drive she had brought along with her. She tucked the flash drive into her pocket, and stepped back out into the hallway.
Everything still seemed so quiet. Nothing like when she was here last...
It was strange, and almost felt abandoned. She continued down the hall, stepping into another room to look around. They had to have left somebody behind to watch everything, right? She was afraid they'd fled the building after their incident.
As she moved, she suddenly heard voices coming from the bottom floor through the vents.
"Man, that was not what I expected going into that. Everything was perfect up until she decided to fight back... They even got some pretty nasty shots off on him too..."
"Yeah, I feel horrible for Shaun though... Poor dude didn't deserve to go that way..."
"Yeah... Who knew she'd be that outta control? It seemed even the devil was taken aback by her-"
"No wonder they want to get her back..."
Aurora bent down close to the vents, eavesdropping on the conversation. Wanting to get someone back? The devil? A cold, dark feeling grew in her stomach, as too much of this was connecting to one another.
"Yeah, and did you see what she did to the boss' arm? I'd be surprised if he can ever use it again after something like that."
"Yeah, wrist shattered, arm broken, and completely dislocated... And just... Shaun... bleeding out from his side?? Horrific..."
Aurora's mouth went dry, as she thought about what had gone down. Was Kasey alright? She didn't know. From the sounds of it, it was a pretty bad fight.
"Well, we gotta prepare for a hunt now it seems. Boss is pretty pissed... His boss is pissed about how close we were to not just catching her but also taking down the devil and they still got away-"
Shit. She knew they were going to go after them again. Not willing to let that happen again, she took hold of the vent cover and pulled, ripping it open and slipping inside. Once inside, she put the cover back on, and started towards the voices.
They kept talking about getting ready to hunt for the Devil and Spider lurking in Hell's Kitchen, unaware there was anyone else in the building.
Aurora crept through the vents, nearing the two. She located a vent close to them, glaring between the cracks to size them up. Here and now. That's when they had to be stopped. Otherwise they'd just keep up the crazy experiments, keep hurting people.
They were walking down the hall headed to one of the rooms.
"They want us back out there as soon as we can. They couldn't have gotten far in the shape they were in."
She rearranged herself, pressing her soles against the vent cover, and holding onto the top of the vent for stability. In one swift movement she kicked herself out of the vent, landing in the middle of the hall, a good few feet behind the men.
They startled and whirled around. "What-?!" They stepped back upon seeing one of the spiders and quickly pulled their guns and radioed out, "Spider spotted! First floor, Hall A3!"
Aurora thrusted her arms out, shooting webbing at the firearms and webbing them to the ceiling. She ran at the two of them, ducking down to kick at one of the men's legs.
They fell backward with a cry while the other swung a blade at her.
She jumped backwards, just so that the blade didn't fully make contact, instead grazing her side. She kept back a couple of feet, glaring the two down before lunging at the one with a blade.
The man dodged her and took a swing at her again. "How did you even get in here?!"
"When you leave your place empty, it's pretty easy to break into." Aurora growled out, attempting to dodge the second swing. It slit her arm as she moved past, going in for a punch to his gut.
He coughed as he was hit and grit his teeth. "You're gonna regret coming here." He swiped at her again.
"You're gonna regret working here." She retorted. She went to jump back, but the blade cut her side, and quite deeply too. Cursing herself for slipping up, she shot webbing at his eyes, going in for a headshot.
He cried out when she covered his eyes and struggled to pull it off.
The other quickly got to their feet and tried to grab hold of her.
"Ah, no. Wait your turn." She quipped, grabbing ahold of one of their arms, dropping with the intent to swing them up and over her, towards the ground.
The man cried out when she threw him and the other was still fighting with the webbing.
Aurora glanced between the two, adrenaline running through her veins. Stepping forward, she went to grab the webbed man's throat, lifting him up and sending him straight towards the floor.
They gasped as they hit the ground but stayed down. She heard more people running towards them.
"You've gotta be kidding me." Glancing between the two, she set up a few web traps in the hall, before slipping into a nearby room.
They could be heard trying to get through the web traps, calling for more back up.
Maybe this was a bad idea. In her defense, there were only two of them to begin with. She reached up to her ear, about to activate the comms before stopping. How would she ever get anywhere by constantly depending on Tony to save her? She dropped her hand and waited.
They finally cut through her webbing and started searching for her.
Aurora silently grabbed an office chair, shoving it under the door handle and started looking for a better way out. Her first idea was the vents, but she had to find one first.
The guards were searching the offices nearby and found the locked one. "Here!" They called out, starting to try to break it down.
Crap. Her heart began to race, and she shifted along the walls, searching for a vent. She felt the metal of a vent and grinned. "Aha!"
They were almost through the door now. "Come on, come on!"
"I'll take that as my cue to go." She wrapped her fingers around the grate, and with one swift tug she pulled it clean off. She slipped inside the vent, and headed deeper inside. "I don't even know where this lets out.."
She heard them break in and rush to the vent to try to catch her but she was too far in now.
As soon as she felt she was far enough in, she paused to take a breather. See? She thought to herself. Didn't need Tony.
(Fun fact! All the project names that look like random numbers can be translated!!! Try figuring them out and let me know what you get!!)
