Chapter 24
Foggy had been sitting in his office when his phone rang and he didn't even greet them before he heard Matt's rough and tired voice. He sat there for a moment before grabbing his jacket and car keys, holding the phone to his ear with his shoulder. "Where at?" He'd harass him about the details later.
Kasey had sat down nearby, keeping her senses alert for danger.
"Tenth and Sawyer, the alleyway across from the liquor store." Matt responded, leaning his head back against the wall. "I've got a tag along with me too. Don't worry, she's a friend."
Foggy sighed heavily. Matt heard him telling Karen that something came up and he had to go and he'd see her later. "I'm on the way. Stay there." He told him.
"I have no plans on going anywhere." Matt replied, but hanging up and tucking his phone back where it came from. "He should be here shortly."
Kasey nodded. "I'll keep watch. Just... rest." She told him as she stood guard.
It was about ten minutes in when she suddenly tensed up, listening closely. "Someone's coming." She lowered a bit into a defensive pose, ready to fight whoever came unless Matt told her to stand down.
Matt tilted his head slightly, listening for the sound of whoever was coming. He held his breath, discerning the pattern of their movement and... let out a relieved sigh. "It's him."
Kasey let herself relax at that as Foggy came into the alleyway, tense but stopped when he spotted the two of them.
He stared at Kasey who was still crouched down, her mask pulled up allowing him to see her mouth. It was hard to see what exactly was on her face with the shadows surrounding her but they both just stared at each other before he glanced towards Matt for a moment. "...They aren't gonna come at me, right?" He asked after a moment.
Matt let a chuckle slip past his lips, but shortly after realized that was a mistake due to the ripple of pain that resulted from it. "No- No. They shouldn't come at you."
Matt gripped the brick wall behind him, using it to hoist himself up, so that he was standing. "Thanks for coming."
Kasey hearing Matt's tone, let her body language drop into a more curious posture, sitting up more but when Matt moved, she was up on her feet and by his side, hovering nearby like an anxious puppy.
Foggy let out a breathy laugh at the sight. "Y-Yeah. I know you don't call unless you have to." He replied. He looked concerned when Matt was leaning heavily on the wall. "What the hell happened??" He asked, coming over and taking note of the... what was that?? A white fabric?? It was wrapped around his right arm, chest, and left leg.
"Some group captured her, and when I went in to get her out of there... let's just say they were armed to the teeth." Matt responded. "They had some sort of piercing bullets that went straight through my suit."
"Oh shit-" Foggy swore before realizing that meant the fabric was bandaging of some kind. "I parked close by, do you need help getting to the car?" He asked him.
Kasey stayed quiet glancing between them.
"No I-" Matt began to start towards the car, before stumbling and gripping onto the ledge of a dumpster to steady himself. "Okay, maybe I do." He was too tired to be embarrassed. Turning to look at Kasey, he spoke again. "You can trust him, truly and fully."
Kasey was at his side, concerned when he stumbled but took a small step back to let Foggy help.
Foggy watched Kasey try to relax a bit more but could tell she was still on guard. But it wasn't towards him anymore.
He gave her a glance when he went over to Matt and let him lean on him without commenting on it, knowing Matt was already exhausted.
He stopped for a moment when he finally caught a better glimpse of Kasey as she had been too hidden in shadows before.
He paled and stiffened a bit when he realized that there was blood around her mouth and he seriously doubted it was hers.
Kasey noticed him tense up while gazing at her and instinctively she did the same only to force it back down.
Fight or flight was trying to kick in but she held it back for Daredevil's sake. He needed the help and he said she could trust him.
Foggy quickly turned his attention back to Matt. "Um, you ready?" He stuttered for a moment, still unnerved by his realization but tried to refocus.
Matt considered the interaction between the two of them, and though he wasn't sure what caused it, he assumed it would have been addressed by them had it been immediately important.
"Ready. Let's try to go quickly, to reduce the possibility of someone seeing this."
Foggy nodded. "I'm not too far and I'm out of sight for the most part so we should be good." He helped Matt along, Kasey trailing behind them like a duckling.
"Should I go look for our mutual friend?" She asked after a moment. After all, Matt was still looking for her, wasn't he?
Matt had forgotten all about himself- no, their mutual friend- no... agh! It was getting blurry to think too hard about it. He whipped up an excuse on the fly. "I sent him a message after calling Foggy. He had gone pretty far out looking for you, so it might take him a bit to get back."
Kasey tilted her head a bit but nodded. "Okay."
Foggy said nothing but let Matt lean on the car while he opened it for him.
Kasey sat in the front so Matt could stretch his leg out in the back. She was a bit tense. She wasn't used to riding in cars much anymore. They confused her senses.
When the door was open, Matt slipped into the backseat, sitting sideways so he wouldn't have to bend his bad leg. He leaned his head against the seat, finding the seat to be much more comfortable than the concrete he was on earlier.
Foggy made sure he was situated and shut the door and hopped in. He started the car up and took off, thankful he knew some backways around town.
It took them a couple minutes to get to Matt's apartment building and Foggy had pulled around the back so they could access the alleyway a bit better.
"How do you wanna do this?" He asked, helping Matt out of the car.
Kasey stood nearby and shifted. "I can grapple us up there again," she offered.
Foggy looked at her a bit confused by that.
Matt made an explanatory motion with his hand. "That's one of her shticks." He told Foggy, knowing he'd be confused.
"It'd be easier to see her do it than to explain exactly what it is."
"Uh, show away then??" He replied.
Kasey walked over to the building and with a flick of her wrist, webbing shot out and stuck to the top.
"What-" Foggy stared in shock.
She turned to him. "I can take him on up and come get you or you can come up normally." She offered.
"I, uh, think I'll take the stairs." He replied, letting her take Matt from him, hesitantly.
He really hadn't processed how tiny she was compared to Matt so the idea of her grappling them both to the top on a string seemed kinda terrifying.
"Are you sure about this?" He asked Matt.
Matt grinned, finding Foggy's reaction to be humorous. "Think of it as a cable, not as a string. She's just my elevator ride to the top." Matt joked.
This made Kasey laugh. "Yeah, I guess I am, huh?" She grinned and Foggy slightly flinched at the sight. Was it him or did she have fangs? Fangs that were coated in someone's blood.
Kasey didn't seem to notice, her attention was on Matt. "But yeah, the webbing is basically as strong as a spiders would be if you made it this thick!" She explained. "So cable isn't far off!"
Foggy just glanced at Matt, confused and kinda terrified of this small... child?? In front of him. "Cool... I'll uh... meet you guys upstairs then." He moved to step away once Kasey had Matt securely.
Matt held onto Kasey with his good arm, although he was certain she was strong enough to lift him anyways. He knew Foggy was probably weirded out by everything at the moment, and he felt guilty bringing him into it all.
She gave a tug on the web as she activated the grapple and Foggy watched in surprise as they made it to the roof.
His eyes widened watching her stick to the side of the building with her feet, helping Matt up and over again.
"What the hell-" Foggy muttered under his breath before shaking his head and heading inside to meet them.
