Chapter 20
Aurora had spent most of her time on her own, after her trip back to Hell's Kitchen. She had even skipped school the following day, preferring to use her time in other ways.
Aurora heard her phone buzz and ring from her pocket.
She grumbled something under her breath, before pulling her phone out and accepting the call. "Hello?"
"Hello ma'am," Tony's voice greeted Aurora. "Wanna explain why you skipped school?"
Aurora had half a mind to hang up and ignore any incoming phone calls for the rest of the day. Instead, she pushed that idea to the side, for now. "Didnt know you've been keeping an eye on my attendance." She avoided the question.
"After the other day, I decided to check in. I take it you are still looking into Kasey's whole situation?" he asked her.
Aurora rolled her eyes, passing her phone to the other ear to continue talking. She knew that Tony was too clever for her to hide much stuff from him. "Yeah, I've been patrolling and trying to look into it." She didn't mention that she had basically been trading patrolling for sleep.
"Well, I know you aren't gonna leave this alone so why don't you come to the tower and help me out here?"
Aurora pinched the bridge of her nose, a headache growing between her brows. Of course Tony would want her to go there. She understood he was doing so for a reason, but still. "I don't know... I'm pretty busy with patrol.."
"Uh huh. Guess you don't wanna help dig up more dirt on them and make a plan to go back over with me?" He asked her. "That's fine. Just thought I'd offer-"
Dammit. Aurora cursed herself for even trying to talk her way out of it with him. Sometimes she wished he wasn't so cocky. "...Fine. But I won't be able to stick around all day. I've got a lot of work to do."
Tony smiled a bit on the other end. "Of course. Just thought you'd like to be in the loop on the plans."
"Yeah yeah. Be there in five." Aurora spoke, hanging up the phone. She stood from where she was perched, atop a high rise building overlooking the city. Stifling a yawn, she started towards Stark Tower.
Tony was looking over some more stuff on the computer they had brought back in the lab while he waited for her to arrive.
Aurora arrived on the balcony of the tower, pulling her mask off of her head. She tucked it into her pocket, and tan her hand through her hair to somewhat detangle it. She headed into the building, saying hello to FRIDAY as she entered.
"Hello, Aurora. Mr. Stark is in the lab. He is expecting you." Friday greeted her.
"Thank you Friday, I'll be there shortly." Aurora spoke to Friday, doing just as she said. She found her way to the lab, having done it dozens of times before. Once she arrived, she spotted Tony. "Well, I'm here."
"Hey, take a seat, let me show you what I've found." he told her as he pulled up the computer screen to display as a hologram.
Aurora came over spinning a chair backwards and settling down. She watched the hologram, her eyes flickering over the tech. "Something interesting I hope?"
"Yeah," He moved some things around before pulling up a locked folder. "Fri, if you please," The folder unlocked and opened. Lots of documents, photos, even a few videos. "This was buried pretty deep."
Aurora's eyes widened, and she looked over the new evidence. "This is a lot to take in." She muttered, moving a few of the documents around to look at the photos. All of this didn't help to quell her anger towards that organization.
Tony nodded. "Look here," He pulled one up. "The title is Opening day at Black Out. I assume that's what they're going by."
"Black Out? That name isn't suspicious or anything.." Aurora spoke, reading over the text and viewing the pictures. Her brows were knitted together as she focused, trying to find something familiar within the photo.
"Especially since they seem to have a thing with blinding people." He agreed. He pulled a few more photos. "Most of the ones with people are corrupted or deeply locked down. But there's a few videos we managed to get that seem to be of the 'Subjects'." He replied. "They aren't for the faint of heart, I'll tell you that."
"Probably because they want to act as a crutch for the people they blind. That way they need to rely on them." Aurora theorized, waiting for him to play the videos. "Well I'm not faint of heart."
Tony nodded and pressed play.
The video showed up and they saw someone pacing around in a white room. It was mostly empty aside from a few things. They looked frantic as they paced before a door opened and they were dragged out, kicking and screaming the whole way but there was no audio.
They didn't come back.
Another played and it was marked 23. They woke up in the room, panicked and tried to get out when they punched the bed in frustration and it bent. They stepped back in surprise before looking at the wall and trying to punch it but it did very little.
They were taken from the room and brought back. They were frantic before sprinting at the wall and slamming their head against it, nearly knocking themselves fully unconscious and quickly repeated over and over and before they could stop them, they finally achieved what they were after and their body slumped to the ground, dead.
Tony kept his arms crossed and swallowed thickly.
Aurora sucked in a sharp breath, leaning back from the video. Tony was right when he said it wasn't for the weak hearted. She watched, her eyes glued to the screen, even if she didn't want them to be. However, the video only furthered her determination.
24 was strange. It showed them in the room, pacing around but it was slower and more calculated before tilting their head to look up at the camera, their eyes glowing for a moment before the footage went to static.
There were others that were other subjects panicking in the room, breaking down, being pulled from the room only to never return.
Aurora furrowed her brows, before shaking her head. She reached up, pressing the palms of her hands against her eyes. "That's something I can't unsee." She let out a sigh. "But at least it's something."
Tony sighed. "Yeah... It's... It's a start to be sure. We might be able to trace some of their faces and find out who they were. Let their families, if they have them, know..."
Aurora nodded, trying to rewatch for the subject's faces. She didn't recognize any of them, and somehow, that made it worse. These kids weren't known to a whole lot of people, otherwise they would've been searched for.
Tony had Friday helping out and was looking through some of the other photos hoping to find something. "You guys seeing anything?"
"Not much other than the same reactions repeating themselves." Aurora pointed to a couple failed subjects. "Most of the subjects get dragged out and don't come back, or find ways to take their own lives."
Tony sighed. "We gotta find something to work with..." He had purposely not played Kasey's as they didn't need anything from it.
Once again, Aurora was tempted to return to Hell's Kitchen. If she was able to sneak into that building, she'd be able to find much to work with.
"Aurora, if I pulled up a map would you possibly be able to locate the building?" he asked her after a moment.
Aurora nodded. "Yeah. I've been thinking about that building for days. It'd be a piece of cake to find."
Tony pulled up a holographic display of Hell's kitchen and let her look it over, marking the cafe. "That's where I picked you guys up."
Aurora hovered her finger over the cafe, retracing her path back to the building they had escaped from. "That one. It looks like every other building but... looks can be deceiving I suppose."
Tony highlighted it and looked it over. "Friday, get me everything you can on it. Blueprints, who owns it, everything."
"Right away sir." Friday responded as she set to work on tracking the information down.
Aurora was eager to see what Friday would come up with. She had a vague understanding of the building and what was inside it, but wasn't able to gather much information from her time inside. Getting some blueprints would make it all the easier for her to act upon her personal vendetta against the organization.
"I have found an old set of blueprints and it appears the credentials are under Black Out Corps. It appears they are a research group looking into ways to prevent black outs." She stated.
Tony pulled the blueprints up. Looked like an old hotel or apartment building maybe?? Huh...
"A way to prevent blackouts? If that isn't the fakest excuse for an organization coverup..." Aurora shook her head.
Tony chuckled. "You aren't wrong." He brought the blueprints over. "Does this layout seem right?"
Aurora looked over the blueprints, counting down the floors from the roof, and tracing her way through the building. There she found the lab, and the three observation rooms they were kept in. "This was the floor we were kept on."
"So its at least somewhat accurate... Good. Let's make a plan." He told her.
"Well, I had a plan before you basically grounded me from Hell's Kitchen." Aurora replied snarkily. "I was going to go in and rip all of them a new one."
"You would've been alone and you could've gotten into massive danger. I'm offering to let you help now. I understand you want to but I want to do it as safely as we can. As smartly, as we can." Tony replied.
"Yeah yeah. I know you probably would've killed me for going on my own if the Black Out corp didn't do it first." She leaned against the chair, her eyes darting from every piece of evidence. "What's your idea?"
"Well, I've been working on some stealth tech so we might be able to put that to use. But we need to at least secure more evidence if at all possible. If that means cleaning some clocks then so be it. I won't stop you if it comes down to it." He told her. "If you think you can keep them off me while I gather data and what not then we'll move from place to place until we are sure we got everything we can."
"I can do that, not to toot my own horn or anything but I can lay down some web traps before whoever they are even finds out we're there." Aurora responded. He was right about the stealth tech however. "I might need to borrow some stuff to upgrade my suit.."
"You know you have access to my lab. Let's get you upgraded. Maybe add some proper communication."
"That would probably help. Then I wouldn't have to go around carrying a burner phone. One condition though." She held up her pointer finger. "I have to install it. I pride myself on making this thing." She motioned to her suit.
"Of course, I'll bring the parts to the desk." he replied, moving to start gathering them for her.
Aurora got up as well, disappearing for a few moments to change into normal clothes and come back with her suit. She wandered around the lab, gathering a few things she thought she might've needed.
Tony brought a box of stuff over to her. "Here you go! Let me know if you need help, alright?"
"Yup!" Aurora chirped. She contemplated inserting some sort of AI into her suit, knowing she would probably benefit from it. She stored the thought away, figuring she should just focus on the stealth and communication upgrade for now. An AI could always be added later. Strapping on some scientific goggles, Aurora set to work.
Tony went back to routing their attack with the blueprints, smiling a little as he watched her work.
Determined not to sit in silence the whole time, Aurora started asking some questions as she worked. "What are we going to do about the people in the Black Out corps? There's a bunch of them, would we turn them over to the cops?" She questioned, constructing microchips for the communications, and linking them through her mask to the switch on her neck piece.
Tony shrugged. "We can certainly try. Or Fury can figure out how to handle them. Maybe send em to Rikers?"
"Mm. That would probably work. These guys are some pretty evil dudes." She said simply, threading different microfibers into the main body of the suit.
"Which is why Rikers would be perfect for em." He replied with a slight grin. "They shouldn't be able to get outta there."
"Good. They can conduct the rest of their experiments on subjects like shanks and toilet wine for the rest of their days." She muttered, running a quick test of the stealth abilities.
Tony snorted. "Damn right." He grinned. "They'll never hurt another soul. We'll make sure of it."
"I second that." She lifted up her suit, activating the switch on the neck. Her suit darkened, the dark blue color becoming more prominent than the lighter colors. "All that's left is to match the comms signals with everyone else's."
"Great. It's probably just gonna be the two of us. I don't want to risk Kasey going back and Peter is busy with school like he's supposed to be." Tony told her.
"Yeah Kasey is probably still recovering somewhat from whatever wounds she had too." Once she made sure everything was working correctly, she headed off and came back in her upgraded suit.
"Everything working properly?" Tony asked her, looking her over with a smile.
"Yup! Gonna have to get used to the new switch settings but everything seems to be working." Her mood had somewhat brightened with the new upgrade.
"Perfect. Thinking it's best to go later tonight. That way we can hide a bit easier." He explained.
"Do your suits even have a stealth mode? They're kinda... glowy." Aurora teased.
"I've been working on it. I do have the nanosuit, that could work," he pointed out. "But I'd have to find a different way to get there." He chuckled.
"I'd forgotten about the nanosuit, but you're probably right, that one could work." She hummed in thought. "You could always use it to get to Hell's Kitchen and then walk from there."
"That could work. Reactivate when inside..." he nodded to himself.
"Yep. Just make sure we don't get caught before you can reactivate it." She worried that they'd shoot before asking questions, and bullets probably don't feel very great.
"Right. They're pretty fast so it should be alright." He reassured her.
"That's good." Last thing she needed was for Tony to get shot.
"Alright, Friday you got the plans uploaded to the suit?"
"Yes sir! I have also prepared storage for any downloads."
"Perfect. Now, it's just a waiting game for the sun to go down."
"I might run some more patrol before the sun sets. It'll help to pass the time and help out my areas." She suggested.
"Sounds good. Keep in touch and we'll meet up." He agreed.
"Gotcha!" Aurora slipped her mask over her face, securing it in place. She gave Tony a small wave, before running and diving off of the balcony. She had to admit she was a bit of an adrenaline junkie.
Tony chuckled and set back to work on his own suit, keeping an eye on the time.
