Chapter 19

It had been a good while since Claire had left, and Matt was up and moving around alright. He wore a black long sleeved shirt, in order to cover the burn and bruises from the night before. He still had no idea how a kid could punch so hard.

Matt moved quietly around his kitchen, attempting to make a pot of coffee. His phone began to buzz, and a robotic voice repeated 'Karen', alerting him of who the caller was. He pulled his phone out, hitting the accept button and pressing it to his ear. "Hello."

"Hey, good afternoon. Are you feeling any better today?" She asked him, having been told he was under the weather yesterday.

"Yeah, I think I should be able to get back to the office soon. I think it's just a cold." Matt had gotten pretty good at coming up with these sorts of excuses. "So what's going on?"

"We just got a, uh, interesting call. Foggy practically stopped functioning for a minute when he heard." She laughed softly. "And uh, a gift basket from the same person..." She explained, a bit awkwardly. "He actually requested he speak with you and Foggy as soon as you are feeling up to it."

"Oh? Well, I can try and call him back, and pass information between Foggy and I. Who was the caller?" Matt asked, settling onto one of his chairs as he waited for the coffee to brew.

"That's the interesting bit. It was Tony Stark." She replied, still sounding like she didn't quite believe it either, despite having met him last week. Not that she mentioned it to Foggy or Matt yet...

Matt paused in disbelief. What was it with this guy just popping up in his life all of the sudden? He cleared his throat, reminding himself that neither Karen nor Foggy knew he had just conversed with Stark the previous night. "Tony Stark? What would Tony Stark want to call us for?" He was sure Tony had his own ritzy lawyers.

"He mentioned something about helping out someone who just got out from an abusive home here in Hell's Kitchen. Poor kid has pretty much nothing from the sounds of it. Like, nothing, nothing Matt. No ID of any kind. No birth certificate, no drivers license, state ID, nothing." She shook her head.

"He said she's barely old enough to even be out on her own in the first place and that she had pretty much escaped this place. Like, they weren't letting her leave." She explained. "He said he'd give more details to the two of you but he'd prefer to meet in person if at all possible."

Matt turned slightly towards Kasey, before returning his attention to the phone call. What were the odds that that kid was the same one asleep on his living room couch? "That's not a whole lot to work with, but if we could meet with him in person I'm sure that could help clear some things up. We'd be looking at an emancipation case by the sound of it."

She nodded despite being on the phone. "Foggy is pretty much giving me puppy dog eyes, begging me to talk you into agreeing." She laughed a bit. "I did tell him it may be a few days before you were back in the office but he seemed okay with that so it's really up to you two."

He heard Foggy faintly begging him to agree to at least talk to him from across the room, making Karen laugh.

Matt chuckled, knowing how much Foggy would be boasting about taking a case from the Tony Stark. Plus, he couldn't say no, especially when it was most likely Kasey they were dealing with. "Well tell Foggy not to worry, and that I'll agree to take the case."

"You hear that, Foggy?" She asked and he heard Foggy excitedly cheering. "Think you just made his whole month." She laughed but she then processed that he said he agreed to take the case as well. "Wait, without even getting more information?" She asked. Honestly, she shouldn't be surprised but even she had to admit that the info didn't quite fill in all the details yet.

"Well, I'm betting that our meeting will clear up most of the unknown details, and I'm sure someone as known as Tony Stark wouldn't contact us without good reason." Matt responded, noticing his coffee was done brewing. He got up and took the coffee pot, pouring himself a cup. "Plus, I'm curious as to what he has to say."

"Well, alright then. I'll let him know! And hey, let me or Foggy know if you need anything, okay? You know we'd be happy to bring stuff by." She told him.

"I know, and thank you Karen." That was one thing he liked about Karen and Foggy. They both were caring for him, even if he didn't need them to be.

"Of course. Hopefully I'll see you in the office soon. Take care." She told him and after he bid farewell, she hung up.

Kasey started to stir a bit on the couch, the smell of coffee waking her a bit and she made a small mumbled noise as she shifted a bit.

Matt set his phone down on the counter, and grabbed a spare mug to pour Kasey a cup. He didn't even know if the kid drank coffee, but he figured it would be a kind gesture nonetheless. He brought it over with some cream and sugar. "Morning kiddo." Matt once again spoke quietly, as to not startle her.

She slowly blinked her eyes awake and it took her minute to look towards Matt. "Morning..." she mumbled. "... are you sure it's morning??" She asked after a minute. "Cause I feel like I slept more than four hours..."

She very slowly moved to sit up, with a wince. She was still really sore but she could already tell her wounds had vastly improved.

"Well, 'morning' is more of an expression term." Matt shrugged, taking a small drink from his cup. "It should be around noon now."

Matt set her cup down, sliding it towards her across the coffee table. "Do your wounds feel better? Seems you can sit up better than yesterday."

She laughed a little as she looked down at the cup and she was not usually a coffee drinker but screw that. She needed caffeine. She picked it up and took a sip herself, slightly flinching at the bitter taste but seemed fine after the first sip.

She nodded. "Yeah, they still hurt like hell but they are definitely better." She confirmed. "I think my fever may have died down too. I feel better than I was last night."

"That's good. That fever was a pretty nasty one." Matt had to stop himself from chuckling at her reaction to the coffee. "Try it with some sugar and creamer, it'll help to make it taste less bitter."

She just took another sip before replying, "What's that? I can't hear you over how much I can't be bothered." She replied with a smirk.

A hint of surprise passed over Matt's face, and he let a chuckle through. "Okay then, guess you're feeling good enough to joke around." He had to admit, it was nice to hear that side of her, as opposed to her more panicky side the day before.

She smiled a little wider. "It's either that or wallow in the pain flaring through my body, so..." she shrugged, taking another sip.

"Mm. Joke all you'd like then." Matt responded lightly, holding the cup between his palms. It was comforting to feel the warmth through the ceramic of the mug.

"Will do," she agreed before downing the rest of her coffee and shuddered a little bit but was already more awake.

"Where's Claire?" She asked, glancing around the room a little bit, noticing it was the two of them.

"Believe it or not, she's got a job outside of tending to Daredevil." Matt joked, setting his cup down for the moment. "I'm still keeping her updated with how you're doing."

She nodded. "I assume she's a nurse or doctor considering how well she patched me up," she laughed softly. "So I'd believe it."

Matt thought for a moment before speaking. "Are you hungry? I could make some more eggs, or order takeout. I haven't gone grocery shopping for a while."

"Food is always good." She replied with a small smile. "I'm fine with pretty much anything, honestly. I'm not that picky." She leaned back a bit.

"Though I'm not opposed to helping go get some groceries if needed," she offered.

Matt laughed lightly, before realizing she might have actually been serious. "Wait, really? You just got stabbed and shot yesterday. I don't think you should be going out to get groceries."

Kasey blinked at him, almost confused for a minute before remembering. "...Oh." She shifted her leg around and it felt a little tender but seemed to move with next to no pain and she knew most of her injuries had sealed up and were deep into the healing process.

She gave a small shrug. "Well I don't wanna just sit on the couch for a week." She replied softly.

"It would do you some good to take it slow, just stretch it out and maybe walk a little at a time. That should help keep you from being restless." Matt offered, standing up to head back towards the kitchen. It wouldn't do much, though. He already knew everything he had.

Kasey seemed to debate her options before carefully pushing herself to her feet as well. She took a minute to adjust and let her take in her surroundings.

She picked up her coffee cup carefully and turned towards Matt and navigated her way over to the counter carefully. "Here," she set it on the counter for him.

Matt took the mug, setting it into the sink to wash later. "Thank you." He finished the coffee out of his own cup as well, setting it into the sink alongside Kasey's.

Matt 'watched' her, in his own way, making sure she didn't get ahead of herself and fall or anything.

She leaned up against the bar, putting her arms on it. "Question, if it's noon but it's still the first thing you ate that day, would it still be breakfast? Or would it be lunch?" She asked. She had energy and she desperately needed to burn it but she knew Matt would have questions if she just went off a day after her dance with death.

Matt hadn't expected that type of question, but he pondered over his answer. "Depends on what type of person you are. Some would deem it breakfast because it's the first thing they ate, and some would call it lunch because of the time of day."

Kasey smiled a bit at that. "But you also have to consider Brunch as well," she added. "I still have no idea why someone came up with that."

Matt chuckled lightly, shaking his head. "No idea. I believe someone came up with that so they could have an excuse to eat between breakfast and lunch."

"Mmm. But why does it matter when you eat?" She asked. "When you are hungry, you eat. You don't wait for the same time every day." She pointed out. "So why does it matter??"

If she was being honest, she didn't mean to get on this random subject train but had just wanted something to take her mind off her current situation. Now here she was debating breakfast, lunch, and brunch-

Matt paused, before letting out a sigh. He knew she was avoiding talking about something, so for now he would amuse her. "Because most people are raised on eating schedules, so it sticks with them."

Kasey nodded a bit at that. "And then there's those who just eat whenever." She grinned. "Whether it's because they don't care or because of needing to isn't important." She then plopped her head down on her arms that were crossed on the counter. "People are weird."

Matt leaned on the opposite end of the counter, turning to look Kasey's way. "Kasey, do you have anything you'd like to talk about? Outside of meal times, that is."

Kasey tensed up at that and looked away, her heart skipping a beat. "Aside from how much I wanna do something other than sit around? No..."

"Just keep taking it slow around here, and we'll see how you're feeling later." Matt responded. "But just know you don't have to avoid subjects."

She didn't respond but he could tell she had slightly closed off again. She just gave a small hum of acknowledgement. She felt bad but... she didn't know if she could tell him, let alone if she was ready to talk about any of it.

"If you aren't ready, that's fine. Just don't exhaust yourself with other things trying to avoid the inevitable." Matt warned, pushing off of the counter to start washing the mugs.

She listened to the water when he turned it on as she stood there, quietly. After a minute she spoke up, "... What were you wanting to ask about?"

"Well, quite a few things. For starters, how you're standing there chatting up the place. Anyone with those injuries would be bedridden for a few days, at the least." Matt explained.

She gave a weak chuckle. "Determination?" She offered weakly. "Stubbornness? Take your pick." She glanced towards him. "To be fair, I am mostly leaning on the counter right now." Which she was. She wasn't putting much pressure on her injured leg.

Matt nodded. "While you're right about that, you were walking fine before that. It takes a lot more than determination to get up and move the day after a dance with death."

She watched him carefully and he could almost feel her gaze focus onto him, sitting up a bit. He felt the slight tension in the air as she "watched" him. "...I've experienced worse..." She said after a moment. It wasn't the exact answer that Matt was looking for but it did answer it.

"Well that definitely makes me feel better." Matt responded. He had a good guess as to what was going on with all of this, and why her friends were such influential people.

She threw her hands up slightly before crossing them on the counter again. "You asked." She replied back just as snarky.

"I did, but that doesn't mean I have to like the answer." Matt responded with a smirk. "I will have to go out and get some groceries though, before Karen and Foggy get out of work. If you truly believe you can make it out there, I'll let you come with me."

She started to say something else but stopped when he agreed to let her come. She looked surprised. "Wait, really??" She asked, pushing herself off the counter, favoring her good leg over the other.

"Yeah. I don't want to leave you here by yourself, considering how much you don't want to be stuck here all day." Matt responded, stepping out from behind the counter to go grab a jacket. "Plus, I really needed an excuse for a grocery run."

She smiled brightly at that. "Thank you!" She replied before spinning towards the couch, taking a few steps. "Oh- Uh, do you have my backpack I had with me?" She stopped and looked back at him.

"It's on the other side of the couch, just around the side." Matt told her, heading over towards his entryway to grab his glasses and cane.

Kasey was practically vibrating with energy and turned back to the couch, rushing forward a bit, but in the spinning process had disoriented her senses and just about threw herself over the back of the couch and onto it. She made a pretty audible thud, the couch scooting forward a couple inches.

"OOF-" She laid there, across the back of the couch, dazed and confused. That was not supposed to be there. She was supposed to be facing the free space to get to the side of the couch. Not slam herself into the back of it.

Matt stopped, turned and just sort of stared in her direction for a moment. "Careful. Don't want you tripping over my coffee table next."

Matt turned back around for a moment, opened a small drawer fishing around in the components until he pulled out a smaller pair of glasses, from when he was younger. Walking over towards Kasey, he held out one hand to help her up, and held out the other with the glasses. "Might want to put these on while we're out."

Kasey turned to him, blinking a bit in confusion as she let her senses recover. Once she processed what happened she blushed and reluctantly accepted his free hand and got back to her feet. She looked at his other hand and frowned a bit at the glasses. "I don't need those..." She mumbled softly.

"You don't need them.." And neither do I, "But when in public it makes sense for someone who's blind to wear them. If you stumble in an unknown environment, people will see you're blind and pass you by." Matt explained.

"It helps to keep a low profile."

She raised an eyebrow at that, slightly tilting her head but took the glasses since he insisted. That wasn't suspicious sounding at all... But if it means I get to leave- She put them on and carefully moved around the couch and picked up her backpack, slinging it on her back. "Fine." She huffed softly as she came back over, moving a bit easier through the room now that her senses reoriented.

Matt moved towards the couch, shifting it back into the position it was in before Kasey had run into it. "Ready to go?" Matt asked.

"Yeah." She agreed. "I'm ready to stretch my legs."

"Great. Let's go." Matt led the way to the door, opening and holding it for her. "If we happen to see anyone I know while we're out, you're my niece. Most people I know, know I don't have a daughter."

She chuckled. "Niece also works because unless you're blond, we probably look nothing alike." She stepped out the door and waited for him. "But would people who know you well know if you actually have siblings?" She asked.

"No, definitely not blond." Matt replied, following her through and closing the door behind him. "Let's just hope we don't run into someone I know very well, then."

She laughed at that. "Maybe I'm a family friend's kid?" She offered. "Live out of town and I'm visiting for a while?"

"Sure. I'm keeping an eye on you while your dad is off doing god knows what." Technically he wasn't wrong, even if she didn't know that he knew everything else that was going on surrounding Kasey.

She nodded at that as she pulled a ponytail band out of her backpack and put her hair up. "So where are we headed?"

"Well, you know that corner store I mentioned last night?" Matt asked, leading her over to the stairs as he began the descent down. "I figured we'll run there to grab some stuff."

She nodded again as she followed him down carefully. "What are we picking up?"

"Some ingredients I can use to make actual food and not just eggs." Matt responded.

Kasey made a mock offended noise. "Are you implying eggs aren't actual food?" she asked, a hand on her chest and the other on the stair railing.

Matt chuckled, feeling his feet hit the bottom of the stairs as he descended them. He knew these stairs like the back of his hand. "When you eat them constantly, they sure don't taste like it."

"Then add spices to them! There's all kinds of ways to have eggs." She pointed out as she reached the bottom as well.

"I've tried as many ways as I can make them. Sometimes I just don't have the time to make them any different." Matt retorted, starting towards the front door.

"That's fair, time does play a factor." She trailed after him, mostly using his footsteps to know where to go so she didn't have to focus harder than she needed too.

Matt made sure to keep a pace that would be easy to follow and match. Once he opened the front door, he would give simple directions. "Left."

Kasey stepped outside and briefly staggered at everything her senses picked up. Oh wow, guess I haven't been here while it was a busy time- She quickly refocused onto Matt and hurried after him, trying to tune some of the other things out.

Matt held out the arm he wasn't holding his cane with, talking as they walked. "It's busy out, if you need to, you can hold onto me until we get there." They came to the corner and he spoke again. "Left."

She hesitated before sprinting forward a bit and snatching onto his arm with her right one. A part of her wanted to ask how he dealt with all of this... noise. But knew his senses weren't heightened like hers were...

He could tell her heartbeat was just a little bit faster than it had been. He could also hear her fiddling with her backpack strap with her left hand, seemingly subconsciously.

Matt irked a brow, listening to her heartbeat. He assumed because of the new place, the sounds and everything else was becoming a lot to handle for her.

"Take a deep breath Kasey, we're almost there. It should be quieter inside." He told her as the store was coming closer as they kept walking.

She startled a little at his voice but gave a small rapid nod at that and did as he said. She just tried to focus on his footsteps, heartbeat, and tap of the cane.

Just follow that. That's all. Just... that.

Matt continued down the sidewalk, simultaneously checking in on Kasey. The small chime of a bell over their heads announced their arrival at the store. "See? You made it. Maybe by the time we get out of here the rush will have died down."

Kasey relaxed a little at the quieter noises of the store. Granted it was still loud but not nearly as much as outside. "I hope so... I know New York is loud but holy cow-" She huffed as she stayed by his side.

"Especially here in Hell's Kitchen. A lot of people spend a good amount of their time yelling." Matt followed the path he knew in the store, towards the coolers. He folded up his cane and tucked it into his shirt for the time being, so he could carry the groceries he'd pick out.

Kasey took a minute to adjust her senses to tune out the noise of the coolers. "I could tell. They are very loud." She scoffed. "It wasn't that noisy the other night."

"Usually the only people up that late are up against their choice, or out being mischievous." Matt responded, gathering a half gallon of milk among other little things.

Kasey just nodded a bit at that. "It was pretty late." She agreed. She stayed close by, unsure of how to really help.

"Which one were you?" Matt asked, both out of curiosity and to lighten the mood. Once he had gotten what he deemed to be a good amount of items, he started towards the checkout.

Kasey was a bit surprised by the question but stayed at his side as she considered her answer. "...I guess I had to be." She answered after a moment.

"Mm. I guess I can understand that." Matt responded, setting the items on the counter and pulling out his wallet. He used a card, saving himself the hassle of differentiating between bills.

She was kind of surprised that he didn't ask more than that but just waited to help carry stuff if needed.

After everything was bagged and paid for, he handed one of the bags to Kasey to help carry. He pulled his cane out with his newly free hand.

She slid it around her wrist and held onto it. "Where to now?" She asked, sticking close as they left the store. It thankfully wasn't as overwhelming the second time.

"Well, back home so I can make some actual food." Matt spoke, opening the door and holding it for her.

"Mmm. Food does sound really good," She agreed as she stepped outside and waited for him.

"Maybe some pancakes this time around." Matt stepped out after her, turning back in the direction of his apartment.

She followed after him but stopped for a second, overhearing something and focused in on it.

"I'm headed to the Farmer's market right now, I'll let you know when I'm headed back-"

Her eyes widened. "There's a farmer's market?" She asked curiously.

"Well yes, I heard they're going to be in town while the weather is still amiable." Matt paused, turning in her direction. "How'd you know that?"

"Someone just passed by and mentioned it, did you not hear it?" She asked in return.

"I did, I guess I didn't think you'd pick up on that." Matt bluffed, knowing well that anyone who mentioned the farmer's market was a good ways away from them.

Kasey "looked" up at him. "Have you been to it before?"

"Once or twice. Mostly with my friend Foggy. The vendors sometimes switch up the stalls, so it's a bit hard to tell what everything is." Matt admitted. It was mostly true, that and, he really didn't have all the time in the world.

Kasey looked interested and bounced a little bit on her heels. "...Can we go-" She stopped for a minute. Right. Both of them were blind. She hasn't been to one in... oh.

Matt noticed her mood go from kinda bouncy and curious to subdued pretty quickly as she realized just how long it's been since she saw her family and now with the new information, been home.

Matt would have objected, especially with the fact they had some cold items that he needed to get home and refrigerate, but the downward tone in her mood guilted him to say otherwise. "I suppose we can run through it, if we're quick."

She stopped and looked back up at him in a bit of surprise. "A-are you sure?" She asked.

"Yeah, we just have to be quick so the cold stuff doesn't go bad." Matt told her.

She smiled at that. "Thank you!" she said excitedly before hesitating. "...Where is it-"

"I believe it's across the street and down a block or so, in the community center parking lot." Matt responded, beginning to head that way.

She quickly followed after him with a grin. "That doesn't sound too far!" She stayed in step with him as she grew a bit more excited to go. "I... Haven't been to one in a long time."

"Well it shouldn't be too busy, so all should go smoothly." Matt spoke, keeping an even pace for her to keep up with.

She nodded at that, listening as the noises grew closer to them. Her heart rate picked up as she grew more and more excited.

As they grew closer, Matt could smell the different vegetables and produce the different vendors had brought in to sell.

Kasey could too and she seemed to bounce on her heels a little faster until she knew they were pretty much there and walked a little bit faster, getting ahead of him and spinning on her "bad" leg to face him, a big grin on her face. She already felt at home being around the sounds and smells that reminded her of home. "It already feels like the ones I used to go to!"

Matt grinned, finding her upbeat attitude something to look forward to. She already seemed to be getting happier by the second. "I can tell. You're moving around like no one's business."

She didn't process what he meant by that, too excited by being in a familiar atmosphere for the first time in... well, a long time. "I used to go to farmer's markets with my parents at least once a month. It was always like a fun little field trip!" She explained. Here, in a place that she finally felt at home, her walls lowered much lower than they had been since she had woken up in that... place.

"I can assume it's nice to revisit those memories." Matt responded, truly glad to see her having gained a better air about her.

She gave a small nod. "It... It is. I really miss it..." She admitted softly. "But it's nice to still feel at home in places like this..."

"That's good, I'm glad you can find a piece of home in a place such as Hell's Kitchen." He chuckled lightly. They were now past the entrance of the farmer's market, and the vendors and patrons were buzzing around them like honey bees to flowers.

Kasey made sure to kinda stay out of the way and looked at him. "How long can I wander around for?" She asked him.

"Maybe... an hour? Tops. Otherwise I just dropped twenty dollars on spoiled milk and groceries." Matt replied with a joking grin. "I'll stay with you."

She laughed. "Okay, we'll be fast then!" She let her senses heighten a bit more and started walking around carefully, just taking in the atmosphere happily. She almost felt like she'd run into her parents here too but knew that wasn't going to be the case.

This time, Matt followed after her, making sure to keep her pace. He continued to act his blind part, but did so in a way where he wouldn't bump into anyone or cause a scene. After all, Kasey was still unaware of his true self, at least that he knew of.

Kasey meanwhile was slowly getting faster as she became more and more at home. She had hyper fixated on her surroundings, almost forgetting she had Matt trailing behind her. She navigated with ease through anyone around her, "glancing" at a few of the booths that caught her senses attention, and eventually had easily slid into conversation with some of them as if she'd been coming to this exact farmer's market her whole life. She was very clearly in her natural habitat now.

Matt was even finding it difficult to both keep up with her and keep up his act. He didn't usually deal with teenagers, so he hadn't expected one to be this active and elusive, especially without meaning to be.

It didn't take very long for her to almost completely vanish in the crowd had it not been for her heartbeat. She happily chatted with some of the vendors before hearing one of them drop something and then swearing a bit and turned towards them, moving over to them. "Are you alright?" She asked, genuinely concerned they might have injured themselves.

They looked surprised at the question. "Oh, uh, yeah. Thanks. Just dropped my phone, that's all." The man answered.

Kasey smiled a bit at that. "I just heard something hit the ground and you swear and was worried you got hurt- I'm glad you're alright."

The man chuckled. "Thank you for checking."

"Of course!" Kasey replied before waving and moving on. She was working her way around the booths up against the building's walls now and stopped hearing something coming from nearby but around a corner of one of the buildings. She stepped towards it, cautiously but curiously. "Hello?"

There was no answer and so she slowly stepped a bit further in, turning up her senses. Maybe it was a cat or something??? She started to call out when a trash can fell over and scared her as a cat sprinted away. "Oh... Cat. Goodness." She sighed before chuckling and shaking her head and turning back the way she came. She was almost out of the alleyway when she felt her backpack get grabbed from behind.

Panic filled her mind and she turned to swing at them, taking them off guard but another pair of hands grabbed at her, covering her mouth as she cried out. She smelt a strong chemical being held to her face and her panic increased and tapped into her strength as she fought back.

"Geez! Someone sedate her!" One of them called out and she felt something sharp stab her near her collar bone and felt it enter her system, her body starting to relax rather quickly against her will.

"Geez. She really put up a fight huh... Hopefully this'll draw him out..." She heard them talking as her heart rate slowed down as her body shut down into deep sleep.
