Chapter 18

Kasey had startled when she suddenly heard the sounds of a fight begin. Her eyes widened and she tried to get up to which Claire quickly rushed over and pushed her down. "Kasey! What are you doing?! You're gonna hurt yourself!"

"T-They're gonna hurt him- They're gonna hurt him if they think he did something to me-"

"What? Who? Who's going to hurt who?" She knew she meant Daredevil in one of those places but-

"PLEASE CLAIRE!" She begged with big fearful eyes. "Take me to the roof, just- Somewhere where they can see me!" She begged, tears starting to flow.

"I can't, it'll hurt you more than you already are and open the stitches," Claire replied, her heart aching at the sight of Kasey so distressed.

Kasey shook her head and looked towards the window, heavy tears falling down her face. "I-... I'm scared they're gonna really hurt him because of me... If they think- Even for a minute that he knows where I am and he doesn't tell them or that he hurt me- Or that he's working with Them-" A shaky sob came from her. "I'm scared one of them might kill him because of me!" She cried. "Please Claire!"

Claire stared at her in shock. This implied she knew what that noise was and whatever it was, was after her. "Kasey, I can't. I'm sorry. If it's Daredevil you're worried about, you don't need to be-"

"He doesn't know what he's up against!" She argued. "He doesn't know they aren't here to hurt me!"

Claire opened her mouth to reply, hearing the sound of a blast or two go off and her eyes widened. "Oh shit-"

Kasey tried to get up but Claire pushed her back down. "No, you need to stay here." She insisted.

"But-!" Suddenly the noises of fighting stopped and her heart skipped a beat. Tears poured down her face, praying that someone had just subdued the other and nothing more- They listened and waited and then heard the engine leave the area.

Kasey turned to Claire. "We need to go to the roof-"

Matt opened the door to his apartment, having heard some of the tail end of the conversation from the hall. He held a plastic bag in his hand, and he could hear it rustling with every movement.

He walked into the living room, taking note of the situation. "I grabbed the stuff you needed from the store, Claire. What's going on here?" He asked, setting the bag onto the coffee table.

"You wouldn't believe who I ran into on my way back." He waited a moment to continue. "Our mutual friend. Daredevil had met up with some of your friends Kasey, and he said they were worried about you. Since your stitches won't be healed enough until tomorrow afternoon, I'm afraid they won't be by again until then."

Claire startled a little bit and put her hand to her chest. "Geez, Matt!" She took a deep breath. "Just give us both heart attacks, why don't ya?"

Kasey also startled but didn't turn to him when he came in. She sniffled and wiped at her face, still shaking. At least until Matt mentioned Daredevil. Now all her attention was on him and he could practically feel it. "I-Is he okay?! They didn't hurt him, did they??" She sounded genuinely really worried about him.

"They are already overprotective of me and if they thought he hurt me or was working for-" She realized she was starting to ramble and say things she really shouldn't be and promptly shut up about that and looked away but asked again in a softer voice, "But he's okay?"

Claire stared at her in a bit of shock before looking at Matt.

Matt was a little hurt that she thought that Daredevil couldn't hold his own, but then again he knew he was already developing bruises from the altercation, and he didn't even get hit that much.

"Yes, he's fine. Got a bit of a burn on his shoulder, but he's fine." Matt gave an apologetic expression to Claire for getting hurt again. "I can guarantee you, he's been through a lot more than that."

Claire just put her face in her hands with a sigh. "I can confirm that. Unfortunately."

Kasey looked a bit upset that he had gotten injured but relaxed when she knew it wasn't bad. "But they'll see me tomorrow?" She asked.

Claire turned to her. "If your stitches are healed enough, yes. We can't have them come here so we'd have to meet them somewhere." She explained.

Kasey knew that they would be, which was gonna raise questions but just nodded. "Okay..." She suddenly felt exhausted. "I think I just burned off the last of my energy..." She mumbled.

"Well, when you're injured, you have a lot less energy to spare." Matt explained, sitting down on one of his chairs.

"Go ahead and rest up so you can see your friends tomorrow." Matt spoke softly, hearing her heart calm down a bit. He knew she must've been worried, whether for him or her friends.

She gave a slow nod. "Mkay..." She laid down on the couch and passed out not much later.

Claire sighed softly and walked over to Matt. "Come on," She told him quietly and walked towards his room so she could patch him up without risking Kasey seeing.

Matt got back up, wincing slightly. It was always when the adrenaline finally left his body that the pain followed after. He followed Claire to his room, closing the door behind them.

Matt smirked. "You wanna know who her friends are?" He asked, lifting his shirt up to expose the burn, and spots where the other two had hit him.

Claire stared at the burn mark and the bruises that were already pretty visible. "Holy shit Matt-" She hissed as she looked him over. "Were you fighting a god or something?!"

"Well. Not exactly. More like Iron Man and his spiderlings." Matt chuckled but followed shortly after with a hiss of pain. "They pack a pretty mean punch. Spider-man simply shoved me, and I can already feel the bruise starting."

"Iron man and the spiderlings??" She sat back for a minute before shaking her head. "A shove did this?" She carefully finished cleaning the burn and wrapped it with gauze and burn cream. "Matt, if those are her friends, then who the hell is she?"

Matt shook his head, not knowing the answer. He reached up, touching the gauze tenderly. "Based on how she was reacting to a lot of things... I don't know. But until she feels safe enough to tell us, I won't press her for the answer."

She sighed at that. "Yeah, I think that's for the best." She finished tending to him. "Keep that wrapped as much as you can, if you can rewrap it yourself then apply the burn cream and then wrap. It might blister." She warned him with a sympathetic look. "Try to just leave it be."

"I can try and leave it be, but I can't guarantee other people will." Of course Matt Murdock would be the type of person to get burned and jump straight back into the fires of Hell's Kitchen.

She gave him an unamused look. "Then brace yourself for a lot of pain if they mess with it." She replied before sighing. "You should get rest too. I don't have work until later tonight so I'll stay up and keep an eye on her."

Matt couldn't deny the fact that he was pretty exhausted from the day's events. "Thank you Claire. I mean it." He walked over to his bed, sitting down on the side. "Wake me up before you go, I can take over from there."

"You're welcome and I will." She promised with a small smile and left the room, turning the light off and shutting the door behind her.
