Chapter 14
Aurora was now scouring the area, trying to track down where that stranger had taken Kasey. The trail of blood droplets stopped a short way away from the alley, so she was at a loss. She regretted her next action, which was dialing Peter for help and hoping Kasey was alright...
Kasey slowly came back around a few times before her body finally started fully booting up. She laid there, listening to the pounding of her own heartbeat in her chest and her labored breathing before very slowly cracking her eyes open.
And no sooner than she had done so was her senses flooded with the burning pain throughout her body, making her release a strangled and pained cry. She hadn't meant to but it hurt like hell!
She hated the burning sensation. It reminded her way too much of when she lost her eyesight.
Matt came over, carrying a small try consisting of a cup of water, some painkillers, some more bandages just in case, and a wet rag. "Might want to stay still for the most part. You got some pretty bad injuries in your fight back there. A friend patched you up, but you should still limit your movements."
Upon hearing the new voice, Kasey flinched but gave another small cry. Not only did she not recognize the voice but despite him speaking normally it was rather overwhelming for that brief moment. She took a minute to process what he said.
Well no shit Sherlock- Of course I'm injured! She thought to herself as she laid there a bit tense as she tried to slow her racing heartbeat but was mostly unsuccessful.
And someone patched me up?? She shifted just a little and felt the bandages around her waist and around her leg. She also noticed her arm was splinted.
"W-Who..." She tried to speak but winced when it hurt. She did it anyway. She needed answers. "W-Who are you? And how did I get here?" She demanded despite her weak voice. It still had a small feisty tone to it.
Matt recognized the tough act she was putting up. He just wondered why someone her age managed to get into a scuffle this late at night, in the middle of Hell's Kitchen, and end up not being totally freaked out. "You can call me... Mike."
He set the tray down on the coffee table, picking up the painkillers and water cup. "I've got some aspirin for you if you'd like it."
She narrowed her eyes a bit at him, making sure to focus enough to feign being able to see. "You hesitated." Was all she replied. She didn't move to take it from him.
She wasn't about to trust him to give her something if he was gonna just lie to her about a name. Besides, she probably didn't have anything in her system. The meds, if they were indeed aspirin, would just make her sick. Plus they wouldn't last long if they did much at all.
She noticed he didn't answer her other question either so she repeated it. "How did I get here? Or are you just gonna lie about that too?" She hissed at him, body tense and despite the injuries, seemingly ready to fight if needed.
"Just... relax. Okay?" Matt told her, setting the cup and aspirin down within her reach if she changed her mind later. He didn't blame her for being suspicious, he respected that.
Matt didn't quite like using the name but the time called for it. "Daredevil brought you here, knowing you couldn't go to a hospital. He's an acquaintance of mine, comes here when he gets beat up sometimes." It wasn't entirely untrue, he just hoped she'd believe it.
She looked a bit surprised at the mention of Daredevil but her brows furrowed a little, still expressing confusion when he said he knew she couldn't go to a hospital. He wasn't wrong but... left somethings up to the imagination. Did he know about her powers somehow or just that she wouldn't have made the trip?
She "watched" him as he explained. Her head tilted a little bit. She was still a bit tense and uncertain but... if Daredevil of all people trusted him? Just based on what she knew about Daredevil, which was mostly rumors if anything, then theoretically she could trust this... Mike.
Which she knew wasn't his name from the way he hesitated but if he was associated with Daredevil then maybe that's why?
She looked hesitant and uncertain but much less hostile and ready to fight. "Is that why you lied about your name?" She asked after a moment of consideration.
"When you associate with someone who jumps around rooftops and knocks people out, it helps to have a different name." Matt explained, taking a seat on the couch opposite of Kasey.
"What were you doing in that alleyway?" He asked, hoping to have her tell him the truth from the get go.
She gave a weak chuckle before flinching in pain. "Okay don't do that." She muttered to herself. "Why are you asking?" She replied, keeping her gaze on him best she could. She wasn't gonna answer stuff if she didn't have to.
"Curiosity mostly. But a kid your age being in a fight like that? Kinda raises some questions kiddo." Matt replied. He had updated Foggy on most of the situation, and assumed Foggy made up another sick day excuse for Karen.
She gave a small shrug. "I thought I heard someone call for help so I ran around and luckily found them before they got away and interfered. Didn't expect them to put up that much of a fight though. I heard that usually they'd drop it and bolt in most cases." She explained. It wasn't a lie at all. She hadn't expected the resistance and she knew that due to her witnessing it herself.
Matt sighed and leaned back onto the couch. So far he didn't sense any lies, so either she was an expert at dodging the subject, or was truly in the wrong spot at the wrong time. "Well, in that case, I might be able to take you to the hospital now. You're bleeding slowed enough that you'd be able to make the trip."
He was bluffing, knowing that it'd be weird for a blind man to show up with an injured kid. Maybe she'd explain a little further if he pressed.
Kasey tensed a bit at the mention of the hospital and her heart skipped a beat or two. There was now a whole list of reasons why that couldn't happen. But what did she say? 'Oh sorry, I can't do that 'cause I'm enhanced and also don't exist in this world.'? Yeah right. She racked her brain as fast as she could for a reason that wasn't just off the walls crazy and-
"I don't have insurance-" Well. It was true but- really?? That's what you go with?? She wanted to bury her face in her hands but instead settled for just kinda looking away.
Matt picked up on the tension and the hesitation. He heard her excuse and let out a light laugh. "Ah, I see. I suppose you could stick around, until you're fit to go home. Wherever that may be."
"Speaking of, is there someone I can call for you? Family, friends, anyone?" He asked.
She relaxed a little at the offer to stay only to more violently tense up, almost jerking upward, at the mention of someone to call. Tears that were completely unwelcome or invited pooled in her eyes as her heart rate spiked even faster.
She wasn't sure if the tears were just from tensing so hard that it hurt or the idea of calling someone. Someone who doesn't exist here. She took a small slightly ragged gasp of air at the uncalled for thought. No, no, no! She can't break down in front of a stranger! Especially not right now! Stop it!
She just swallowed roughly before shaking her head, unable to verbally answer. She knew Tony would get worried, and Aurora and Peter but- If she called any of them it'd put her at risk of being found out, not to mention them. They'd also chew her out for doing something so stupid without telling them.
Matt was surprised at the sudden reaction from Kasey, wondering what he had said that got her so riled up. He stood up again, coming over to her. Many different thoughts were going through his head, trying to discern why she reacted the way she did.
"Lay back down, you might open some of your stitching." He pressed a hand gently against her shoulder, trying to get her to lay back down. "If you don't want to call anyone that's fine. We don't have to."
BUT THAT WAS THE THING!! SHE DID!! She wanted nothing more than to hear her family's voices! She let him push her back down as she didn't have the strength or willpower to resist. She hadn't really meant to move anyway. Her heart was still racing, still tensed up, and her breathing was uneven now as she fought to calm down. She just gave a very small and meek nod to acknowledge him.
"Try and calm down some." Matt told her. He could hear her heart racing, and while it did confuse him, he wouldn't keep pushing if this was the result. "For now, I'll let you decide when you want to move on."
"However I do have one more question. What's your name?"
She took a couple more shaky but deep breaths, trying to get her heart to stop racing and it did calm a bit but not much. She glanced towards him a bit hesitantly. "...Y-you still g-gonna stick w-with yours?" Her voice was soft and quiet which was vastly different from a minute ago.
This was good. Asking her simple questions that were easy enough to answer. That sort of refocused her panicked energy. "Depends on if you give me your actual name."
She hesitated for a minute, just letting silence sit between them before softly replying, "Kasey."
"Kasey..?" Matt spoke, waiting for a last name from her. Maybe if he got it out of her, he'd run it through some legal sites to see if she was a runaway or something.
She hesitated again before realizing, 'It's not like he could find you.' She flinched a little at the thought before answering again. "Miller."
"Kasey Miller." Matt repeated, listening to her heart once again. He hadn't known her normal heartbeat enough to know for sure that she was telling the truth. However, he believed that she was. "My name's not actually Mike. It's Matthew Murdock. You can call me Matt if you'd prefer it."
She looked at him, a bit surprised he did give his name. "Well, yeah. I knew it wasn't Mike." She replied with a bit of a smirk. "You did hesitate after all."
"I guess I should work on being more convincing then. In case any other beaten up teenagers find their way into my apartment." Matt chuckled lightly.
She relaxed a bit more, her heartbeat steading back to its normal speed. "I'd certainly hope you don't have more." She replied. "And technically I didn't find my way in here. I was brought without my knowledge." She pointed out, but her voice seemed much more relaxed and comfortable now.
"Fair point. But you did find your way into that alley, which in turn brought you here." Matt returned back to the couch he had been sitting on earlier. "Hungry? Thirsty? Need anything?"
At the thought of food and water, her body yelled at her to get it. After all, it was using a lot of its supply on her healing factor. "Um, food and water both sound good." She replied. She sounded a bit awkward or uncertain about how exactly to request that kind of thing. She wasn't used to having to. Like, sure, Peter, Aurora, and Tony did the same thing but she knew them.
This was a stranger that was letting her recover at his place for seemingly no real reason. She suddenly felt like she was intruding a bit.
"I'm not sure I have much that you'd like, but I can list off a few things." Matt stood up once more and headed into his kitchen area. "I've got water, some milk and orange juice, some apples..." He paused thinking over what else he had. "I could make some eggs."
"Water's best for blood loss, I think??" She sounded a bit unsure but shrugged a bit. "And eggs sound good if you don't mind..."
"I don't mind, if it'll help you heal up. Once again, feel free to take the aspirin I set out." Matt pulled his pan out, running his fingers over the knobs to turn on the stovetop. "You don't seem too surprised to know I can cook. Most people comment on it actually, so I guess I should be appreciative."
That quickly made Kasey very confused. Oh crap- Did I miss something?? Was it obvious?? If I ask, would that give me away too?? Her mind raced with a thousand questions but quickly retracted over what he said. Not surprised he can cook? Why wouldn't he be able to-
Oh.
She hoped she just put that together correctly- "It seemed rude to say anything especially since you're going out of your way to help me." She replied.
"Mm. That would make sense." Matt opened his fridge, pulling out a few eggs to cook up. He buttered the pan and cracked the eggs, emptying them into the pan. He wouldn't comment on the little change in her heartbeat. For now at least.
She relaxed again and fully laid back instead of trying to hold her head up. She listened to the sounds of him cooking and tried to keep from drifting off again.
It was silent in the apartment for a short while, save for the sizzling of the eggs. Once they were done, he took out a plate and slid the eggs onto the plate, before setting the pan down and turning the knobs to 'off'. He picked the plate up, grabbing a fork as well, and brought it over to her. He held it out for her to take. "Bon appétit, kiddo."
She perked up at the scent of eggs and very carefully sat up, wincing a little bit but focusing her senses to see and take the plate. Once she was sure she had it, she fully took it from him. "Thank you..."
"You're welcome." Matt couldn't exactly pinpoint what exactly was up with her, but he had an inkling. Once she had taken it from him he headed back to the kitchen to clean up the mess. He thought back to the alleyway as he cleaned up. Those men had taken a good beating, and he knew someone else had been there.
Kasey took a bite of the eggs when he headed off and her eyes widened a bit before she very visibly relaxed with a very soft little hum of content. She hadn't had food made like this since... since she got free. She stopped but only for a second before forcing the thought away. I refuse to taint these eggs with that mess. She thought to herself before continuing to eat, leaning carefully against the arm of the couch.
As she ate she let the events leading up to now replay in her head. Sneaking out, meeting up with Aurora, fighting those guys off, Aurora saving the lady, her fighting alone, her almost dying, her not dying because of Daredevil which explained the other man she saw a bit of. Then passing out and waking up in an unfamiliar apartment and meeting an acquaintance of Daredevil's, Matthew Murdock.
Wait- Murdock? Why does that sound- The card Karen gave them-
She very suddenly jerked into a more upright position, lowered the plate to her lap and spun her head to look at Matt. "Are you a lawyer?"
Wow. Couldn't be more blunt then that-
Matt flinched, gripping the pan he was currently washing tightly in his fist. How many more times would that girl give him a heart attack?
"That's not exactly a question I would be expecting from you right now, but, yes. I am a lawyer. Were you thinking you might get in trouble for the alley thing? Cause if so, I believe you'll have no issue with the law there."
She gave a small laugh at that, "No, I have no doubt about that. I just-" She realized how sudden that had been. "Sorry, I just realized that I recognized your name..." She explained softly, looking down at the plate in her lap, a bit embarrassed from just blurting it out with no thoughts about it.
"Well it's good to hear that our firm is gaining traction somewhat. That is, I'm assuming you recognized my name from our firm." Matt commented, setting the pan to the side of the sink to let it dry.
She nodded. "I did." She confirmed, her voice still soft. She sounded much more like a child then when he first started talking with her no more than an hour ago. Like she had allowed her walls to lower at least most of the way. "From a card, actually..."
Matt was relieved to hear that she had gotten more comfortable there. "A card? Did you find it or did someone give it to you? Cause I have a hard time believing you'd need lawyering services." He joked.
"Oh, uh," She didn't want to lie now but if she told him who then if Karen said anything to him about them that could out her. "Given." She replied. "I don't recall who though." She lied but she had no choice. She had accepted that and kept her voice steady when she answered.
Matt irked an eyebrow at the girl, but nodded in response. He didn't know why he was looking into this so closely, but he just couldn't help it. "Well, at least our name's out there. We've been trying to get more business."
She tilted her head after taking another bite of the eggs, refusing to let them get cold. "Do you not? I would've thought a place like Hell's kitchen would need it often." She joked lightly but was a bit serious as well.
"Our firm is still somewhat new, and Foggy and I are more interested in taking cases of the innocent instead of any case that walks through our door." Matt explained, pulling out a couple bottles of water from the fridge. One for him and one for Kasey.
She "watched" him move around as she listened and finished up her eggs, setting the plate back in her lap. "I like the idea of that but how would you know if they were innocent or guilty pleading innocent?" She asked. She sounded genuinely curious. Anything to take her mind off the pain. Speaking of which, she snagged the medicine and downed it now that she had food.
It wouldn't do much but hey, it was something!
Matt held out the water bottle for her. "Trade you for the plate." He told her, setting his own water bottle down on the table.
"Most of the time we can figure it out after seeing some of the details in a case. Other times it's just a hunch." Matt replied, covering his slip up fairly easily.
Kasey picked up the plate and looked back up a bit too quickly and her senses swam when she tried to hand it over, missing his open hand as she felt her head spin and her senses black out, almost just falling forward when it happened.
"Woah-" Matt caught the plate and set it down quickly, putting his arms out to keep her from falling forward. "You alright there?" He asked, pressing the back of his hand to her forehead to check her temperature, while keeping tabs on her heartbeat and other conditions.
Her forehead felt warmish to the touch and clammy. "I-I- Every- everything is sp-spinning?? L-Like really fast-" She struggled to explain as she shakily reached up and it took her a couple tries before she was able to grab his wrist with her right hand. She was starting to burn up and her heartbeat became a bit irregular.
"I-It just..." she trailed off a bit before trying to shake her head which made everything worse. "It's cold???" She sounded really confused. And her body was very clearly not cold. Her grip wasn't very strong on his wrist but it was all she had to try to ground herself at the moment.
"Okay, I'm going to need you to lay down again for me Kasey. It feels like you've got a fever going, which isn't necessarily good. The aspirin should help to lower the fever, but you need to focus on resting." Matt told her, once again pushing gently on her shoulders for her to lay down. It really was one problem after the next.
"You'll feel cold, but that's just the body's way of trying to cool yourself down." He pulled his phone out of his pocket, updating Claire with the news of Kasey's fever.
She squeezed her eyes shut when he laid her down. Moving made everything way worse and made her nauseous. "Ughhh, okay, no moving, can do-" She mumbled a bit. "Everything is spinninggggg..." She whined softly. Her senses were all askew now too. She was relying on her weak grip on Matt's wrist to ground her as she could feel his heartbeat. She could barely even register that she was lying down at the moment.
"That's the fever working it's way through you. It'll make you feel all sorts of lightheaded and dizzy." Matt explained, trying to keep her somewhat calm. If her gripping his wrist helped her with that, he didn't mind it. Using his free hand, he grabbed the wet rag from earlier, pouring some new water on it before setting it on Kasey's forehead.
She shuddered at the sudden texture but relaxed after a moment. "That feels good..." She mumbled tiredly, her grip slowly losing while she laid there, focusing on his heartbeat. It was making her sleepy... or was that the fever?? She wasn't really sure but didn't really care either.
Matt let out a sigh, sitting down on the floor in front of the couch. He assumed he'd be there for a while, checking up on her and that fever of hers. "Get some more rest, we'll see how you feel when you wake up."
"Mkay...." She slurred softly and it wasn't long before she completely drifted off.
Matt spent the time she used for sleeping tending to her. He'd change the rag, check her temperature, wait, and repeat. How did he get mixed up in this again?
