Chapter 111
Claire stirred awake the next morning when she shifted around a bit, hearing her phone vibrating. She groaned softly and reached out and grabbed it and saw it was her alarm for getting up for work and swore quietly, she started to sit up when she realized she wasn't at home and was in fact still in the blanket nest with Matt and Kasey who were both still sound asleep.
She stared in a bit of surprise for a minute before smiling softly and carefully removing herself from the two of them.
Matt hummed as he started to wake, the vibrating from Claire's phone enough to wake him. He had found that the blanket nest was more comfortable than he had expected it to be. It was more forgiving on his back than being bent over on a med bed, that's for sure.
He turned tiredly in Claire's direction, humming a question he already knew the answer to. "Work?"
"Yeah." She replied before leaning over and kissing the top of his head. "Go back to sleep. I'll be back this evening."
Matt couldn't hold back a smile when she did. "Okay. Be careful out there."
"I will, I promise." She replied, smiling back at him before slipping out of the room, Kasey still fast asleep.
Matt listened to her for as long as he could. He wasn't sure if he had fallen back asleep before or after Claire had left.
Meanwhile, Peter wandered out of his room and stretched sleepily. He moved over to the island and stole another piece of garlic bread and sat down.
Aura found herself back in the kitchen once she had deemed it a good hour to come out of her room. "Cold garlic bread? At least have the decency to warm it up." She teased.
"Too tired..." He mumbled back, looking towards her.
"Fair." She didn't usually eat breakfast this early, but she was a caffeine addict. So she started up a pot of coffee.
Peter watched her with a chuckle. "How'd you sleep?" He asked her as he finished his bread.
"Fine, for the few hours I got." She shrugged, leaning against the counter to wait for the coffee to brew.
"Same here... You know where Kasey ended up? I didn't see her after dinner."
Aurora shook her head lightly. "Nope. But I'll bet she, Matt and Claire headed to bed not long after they left the kitchen."
"Probably... Kasey seemed kinda off last night and I was worried about her..."
"Yeah." She sighed out the word, and ran a hand through her hair as she thought. "I think this whole thing is just getting to her."
He nodded. "It sucks that it is... It hurts seeing her upset..."
"I wish I could do something to cheer her up about it." She didn't dare suggest making cookies again.
"I'd say just take her out to the arcade or something but..." He shifted with a sigh.
"I don't know if it's safe out there yet." She folded her arms uncomfortably.
He nodded. "Yeah, neither do I..." He laid his arms on the counter. "I hate just... waiting here though."
"There's not much else we can do." She said softly. She wanted to go out, of course, but the risk was too high.
"There's not a lot here to help entertain her... It just... It sucks." He huffed, laying his head on the island.
"You can say that again." She turned, finding the coffee to be ready. She poured herself a cup. "Want one?"
"Yeah, sure." He agreed.
Aura got out another cup and filled it, holding it out for him. At this point she was running on caffeine.
"Thanks." He took a sip and sighed. "I'm so tired of all of this... But I'm sure Kasey is more so."
"Yeah. She's had it the worst out of all of us." She frowned, biting at the inside of her cheek.
"I'm just glad Matt being here seems to help her. She really does trust him a lot. It makes me happy to know that."
"Yeah, they really seem to help each other a lot." Aurora nodded in agreement. Like they were the halves that the other was missing.
Peter nodded. "Had we not met her first, then I would've thought they were family." He laughed softly.
At that she laughed. "You're not wrong. He basically adopted her on sight. Well, you know what I mean."
Peter choked on his coffee. "Aura!" He hissed with a laugh.
She snickered into her cup, taking a slow drink of her coffee. "I had to, okay? They walked right into it."
"I seriously doubt that-" He replied but was still grinning.
"Not to mention, she literally called him dad." She pointed out.
"Yeah! And he didn't seem to bothered with it either-"
"I know! Completely unfazed!" Aurora was just glad Kasey had found some sort of family here.
"I wonder why that is?"
"Probably because he feels the same. I don't know if he's the type to come out and say it, but I think he thinks of her as a daughter." She theorized.
Peter grinned at that. "He's been pretty glued to her just as much as she is so I can see that-"
Aura nodded and finished her coffee, setting the cup into the sink. "I'm glad they have a little family going on."
"Me too... I think it's helping more than they realize."
"I agree." It was something that they couldn't give Kasey.
"Hopefully they don't sleep through breakfast," He chuckled softly.
"What breakfast? Cold garlic bread? I'd sleep through it too." She teased.
"Hey! There's other leftovers!" He replied back with a laugh.
"If you say so." She grinned, before sighing. "Maybe I should go wake them up."
"I'd check the fort. Kasey seemed to be pretty attached to it." Peter told her.
"Good idea. I'll be back in a minute." Aura said, and headed off towards the fort room.
When she peeked inside, she found them curled up in the blanket nest, fast asleep.
She pulled out her phone and snapped a picture, before coming over and nudging Kasey. "Kase, you're going to end up sleeping in-"
Kasey just groaned softly and refused to get up.
Aurora seemed unamused. "You're going to miss breakfast, if we manage to cook some up."
"D-Don't wanna..." She mumbled.
"You're going to end up hungry later." Aurora warned.
"But 'm comfy...." She replied, sleepily.
"I'm... very aware of that. Would you rather I sent Tony in here to get you guys later?" She asked with a smirk.
She groaned at that. "Noooo-" She whined but buried deeper into her snuggle.
"I will also definitely be showing him this picture I took of you two. You guys are so cute." She grinned.
Her eyes were suddenly locked onto Aurora as if she could see her. "What."
Oh that sent chills down her spine. She took a slow step back towards the entrance. "This picture I took- It honestly would look great as a desktop background-"
"Aurora." Her tone was clearly warning her. "You will do no such thing so help me-" Her eyes were still locked onto her.
She laughed nervously, taking another careful step backwards. "Hypothetically, what would happen if I airdropped it to everyone in the building-?"
"Well that would depend." She replied, her voice low and cautious. "Did you?"
"...Hypothetically? Maybe?" She gave a nervous smile.
And before she had time to fully react, Kasey was lunging at her, grabbing at her wrist but snagging the edge of her shirt when she tried to run away. "Oh no you don't-" She growled at her but there wasn't any real anger behind it.
"Oh shit-" Aurora went to run, absolutely not wanting to be on the bad side of Kasey. However her shirt definitely got snagged.
Kasey had a tight grip on it as she pulled her back to her. "You better tell me if you were joking, Aurora." She warned her, keeping a tight grip on her arm.
She had two decisions here. One was to say she was, the other was to say she wasn't. Or... "I was joking!" She laughed. "I didn't send it to everyone in the building! Only Peter, Tony, Pepper and Kade-"
"Aurora-" She hissed. "What the actual hell-"
"I thought it would be funny-!" Aurora responded lightly.
Matt stirred, hearing all of the commotion. What they could possibly be doing, he had no idea.
Kasey stopped, hearing Matt stirring before looking back at her. "Why?!" She replied. "You want me doing that for you?" She threatened her. "Cause boy I know I probably have some good ones already-"
Aurora scoffed and grinned. "Oh really? As if you have anything that tops you two cuddle bugs-"
Matt turned, listening to the girls. He tried to decipher what they were talking about, but was at a complete loss. So, he continued to act as if he was sleeping. For now.
"Oh, I'm sure I have something in Atlas's archive-" She replied back. "Do you want to test that theory?"
Aurora squinted at Kasey suspiciously. She smirked and shrugged. "All I'm saying is that everyone accepted the image when I sent it-"
"Guess it's time to break everyone's phones then-" She snatched hers right out of her hand with a grin. "Starting with yours!"
"Wait no-!" Aurora yelped, reaching out for the phone.
Kasey laughed and held her back. "Give me a reason I shouldn't then!"
"Maybe the fact I really don't want to ask Tony for another one after destroying the last one not too long ago-" She hissed out.
"Then promise me to delete it and help me delete the others and I'll give it back-"
"Ugh." She contemplated the offer before relenting. "Fine."
"Promise?" She asked, still holding it away.
"Fine! I promise! Happy now?" Aurora seethed, still reaching for the phone.
Kasey pressed the phone back in her hand with a grin. "Very."
"You're insufferable-" She grumbled, but jokingly. Aurora deleted the picture off of her phone before pocketing it.
"Thank you." She grinned. "Now to steal the other phones-"
Aura made sure her phone was tucked safely away. "Even if we delete it, they still could've seen it-"
"Delete the evidence. They can't prove it happened."
Despite herself, Aura laughed. "Better get to Tony first before he saves it."
"SHIT!" And she's darting out the door.
That caused her to laugh harder and take off after Kasey.
Matt sat up after they left, shaking his head softly. Teenagers really were beyond him.
Kasey zoomed through the halls searching for Tony. "TONY WHERE ARE YOU-"
Aurora followed Kasey, snickering as she went. "Maybe he's hiding from you!"
"Friday! Where's Tony?"
"The lab!"
"Good." She ran towards the lab.
"Friday! Warn Tony that Kasey's coming in hot!" Aurora laughed.
"DO NOT!" Kasey replied as she kept running till she slid into the lab, startling Tony.
"Huh? Kasey? What-"
She lunged at him. "Where's your phone?!"
"What-"
Aurora rounded the corner after Kasey. "Careful! She'll crush it if you don't give it to her! It totally isn't because of the picture I sent you guys-"
"What-?"
"PHONE." She demanded.
"O-Okay, okay!" He handed it over to her. "Here-"
She quickly deleted the photo with Friday's help and handed it back. "Time to find Peter's-" She disappeared out of the room.
Tony looked at Aurora in confusion.
"I might've taken a blackmail photo of her and Matt." Aurora explained with a light shrug. "She didn't like that."
"You what?" He replied as he watched Kasey disappear down the hall. "Okay... You should probably go with her-"
"Probably-" She waved and dipped out of the lab to chase her down.
She found her in the living room, fighting Peter for his phone.
"Give it here!" She yelled.
"Why?!"
Aura barked out a laugh at the sight. "She's gonna delete the picture I sent you!"
"What? No!" He tried to keep it away from her.
"It's that or I break it Parker!" She replied.
"Ooh-" Aurora said in a singsong voice. Kasey must've been serious then. But, Aura was curious as to how this would play out.
They tussled but eventually Peter deleted it and Kasey relented.
He was panting as he laid on the floor and Kasey stood up. "Thank you! Friday, please ask Pepper to delete that photo."
"Tony has already warned her. It has been deleted."
"Sorry Peter. Probably should've left you out of it." Aurora apologized, standing over him. "You happy now Kasey?"
"Very. Now. I'm stealing the rest of the garlic bread. Bye!" She snagged it and disappeared out the hall.
Aurora laughed lightly. "I guess cold garlic bread is where it's at today."
"What do you mean- I warmed that stuff up-" He finally panted out from the floor.
"Oh, at least it's an improvement." She held out a hand to help him up. "At least she didn't destroy your phone."
"Yeah- what the hell Aura? Did you know that she'd get angry? Like that?" He laughed.
"Mmm." She hummed. "I honestly was just trying to wake her up at first. Didn't expect to get that out of her though. She even said her and Atlas had dirt on me! Didn't see any though-"
"Would you like me to send some out then?" Atlas' voice came from Friday's speakers.
"NO!" Aura shouted quickly. She had no idea what Kasey would even have on her, but she sure didn't want whatever it was getting out.
"Then kindly, please don't be sassy about it." Atlas chirped back.
Peter snorted. "Atlas really just told you off then, huh?"
"Maybe I'll shut off his power, see how he likes that-" Aura muttered, not liking that she had been told off by an AI.
"I can delete everything off your phone and post what I have if you prefer, Miss Aurora Borealis."
Peter looked at her. "I think you've pissed him off-"
"How can I piss off a computer??" Aura whisper-yelled. She never remembered Friday getting this worked up.
Peter shrugged at her. "Maybe he's become more advanced than Friday and Karen?" He suggested. "I mean, Tony made him to be a companion for Kasey-"
"Yeah well this one is kinda freaky!" She continued, sighing in exasperation.
"I'm not freaky, you're freaky. I mean who takes photos of people sleeping???" Atlas retorted back sassily.
"That's it! I'm cutting off your power as soon as I find it!" Aura threatened.
"Bold of you to assume I have one!" He replied back and they heard Kasey holler from down the hall.
"Atlas, shut the hell up and stop harassing Aurora!"
"But-"
"No buts! Get off the intercom!"
"...Okay..." and they heard it click off.
Peter snorted at that. "That- That was hilarious-"
Aurora stilled, before cracking up. "You hear that? It was like a kid getting scolded by his mom!" She laughed.
Peter was laughing too. "It was!"
"Quit laughing or I'll let him blackmail the hell outta you two!" Kasey called down the hall.
"You still haven't shown me a thing of blackmail!" Aurora called back, not hiding her snickering very well.
"Do you want me to?!" Kasey replied.
She wanted to know what Kasey had on her, but she also didn't want whatever it was getting out. "I don't even know what you have!"
"Exactly!"
Peter just laughed at them.
Aura groaned. "Great. Either I get something spilt, or never find out what it is."
"So she's just got dirt on you forever, huh?" Peter teased.
"At least until I tick her off again." She sighed.
"Then simply don't." He laughed.
"I can't guarantee that." She grinned.
"Then you're gonna get in trouble again!"
"I'm aware." She smirked. "I like to live life on the edge."
"Uh huh. Sure." Peter laughed.
"What? Don't believe me?" Aura asked, crossing her arms.
"Nope!" He replied with another laugh.
"Jerk!" Aura huffed jokingly, reaching over to flick him on the head.
"Ow! Hey!" He laughed and shoved her back.
"Hey yourself!" She shoved him back, before jumping up onto the ceiling with a snicker.
Peter laughed again and leapt after her. "Come back here!"
She yelped and dropped from the ceiling, taking off out of the room.
He dropped and ran after her.
