Chapter 109
Kasey was still fast asleep when Claire got there a few hours later.
She walked into the medbay since that's where Friday told her Matt and Kasey were and stopped when she saw them.
Kasey was still completely out and Matt, sitting in a chair, hunched over with his arms crossed on the bed and his head laid on top of them.
She smiled softly at that, snagged a silent photo to tease him about later, and came over. She noticed Kade had covered him with a blanket at least and she gently reached out and lightly rubbed his shoulder. "Hey," She spoke softly so as not to spook him.
Matt hummed softly, recognizing Claire's voice. His sleep fought his rationality, but eventually he forced himself awake. He sat up with a grumble, the position having been unforgiving on his back and chest.
"Claire? When did you get here?" Matt asked, in his usual gravely morning voice. Even if it technically wasn't morning.
"Just a few minutes ago." She replied softly. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah-" Matt stifled a yawn. "We were going through some files and she fainted. She sounded distorted for a bit afterwards so Kade and I brought her here." Matt explained.
"Has she been asleep the whole time since then?" She asked.
Matt thinks back on it, nodding softly. "I think so. I think I would've woken up if she did."
"Do you want to try to wake her?" She asked him, glancing at her sleeping form.
Matt listened, gathering that she sounded peaceful and stable. "Sure. I want to check in on her anyway." He reached out, nudged her gently. "Kasey-"
She let out a small hum and blinked awake, rubbing at her face. "Matt???"
"Hey there kiddo." Matt spoke softly and soothingly. "You doing alright? You sorta fainted, when we were going over the files."
"I did???" She asked, sounding confused as she slowly sat up. "I don't remember that..."
"That's pretty normal when you faint." Claire told her.
"Claire??? How long was I out for?"
Matt furrowed his brows, running a hand through his hair tiredly. "A few hours I think. I ended up crashing not too long after you."
"I'm sorry... I didn't mean to waste the rest of the day like that... I don't really remember what happened. I know we were looking at files but it just... blurred out and then I woke up here."
"I think it brought up some bad memories, and it just spiraled into an overload for your mind." Matt patted her shoulder lightly. "No need to feel sorry for that."
She nodded at that. "Was there at least stuff we could use?" She asked.
"Lots. We could honestly put them away on those files alone." Matt told her with a smile. "They'll help a lot."
She let out a relieved sigh. "Good. They deserve everything coming for them."
"They do. They deserve that and more." He wouldn't go so far as to kill them, but he'd hardly protest if the Punisher made another visit to town.
Claire squeezed his shoulder. "And we'll deliver as much of it as we can."
Kasey smiled and nodded. "We'll make sure of it."
"You feeling any better though? Lightheaded or anything?" He didn't want her getting up if she still felt uneasy.
"Um... a little bit but not bad?" She replied.
"That's good. Want me to get you anything?" Matt was really bad at realizing when he was acting overly dad-like.
Claire smirked a bit at that.
"Um... I'm kinda hungry actually-" She noted, making Claire chuckle. "Good thing I brought some dinner per Tony's request. Which is why I came to get you two."
That made Matt's mouth twist up into a grin. "You kids and your metabolism-"
"Hey! It's not our fault!" She replied, smiling back at him as she started to carefully get up.
Matt offered her his arm to help her. "I can't believe we slept straight up to dinner. Is it really that late?" Matt asked Claire.
"Yeah. It's about 6:30-7." She replied. "They're waiting in the kitchen."
"Huh." Matt said with mild interest. He got up from his chair and pushed it to the side. "Guess we shouldn't keep them waiting."
Kasey nodded and stood up and grabbed onto his arm, when she stumbled a bit.
"Woah, you sure you're okay? I could bring dinner to you." Matt offered, standing still when she stumbled.
"I'm a little dizzy but I think it's just blood sugar..." She replied.
"Then let's get some food in you, yeah? And I'd like you to start eating a little more, you're so light." Matt told her, leading her out of the med bay.
She tilted her head at him but nodded a little. "I've always been pretty light." She replied. "My metabolism certainly doesn't help."
"Building up some muscle might not be a bad idea." Matt suggested. He kept his arm out for her as they walked.
She kept a good grip on it, with Claire at her other side as they headed to the kitchen area. "I mean, I can try."
"Even if you can't, I get that. Your metabolism works fast." Matt nodded.
She chuckled. "Like, really fast." She replied. "Tony started hiding extra snacks around the tower since we started stealing his-"
Matt chuckled. "Hey, that's on him. He takes in three hungry kids, they're gonna eat all his food."
She laughed a bit harder at that. "That's true- he has no idea how we keep finding them-"
"Maybe he needs to start locking them up." Matt joked.
"Spider strength, remember?" She grinned.
"There's no winning with you kids is there?" Matt asked smugly, with that certain grin of his.
"Nope!" She replied, making Claire laugh as they walked into the kitchen.
Matt could smell what was cooking since before they even made it to the kitchen. Seemed to be spaghetti, meatballs, and garlic bread. All of which sounded very good.
Aurora waved from the ceiling, where she was munching on a stolen piece of garlic bread she had snatched before dinner was deemed ready. "Mornin' sleeping beauties!"
Kasey laughed. "Ma'am- it's 7 in the evening?" She replied, teasingly.
Peter laughed. "And?"
"I-" Kasey stopped. "Fair enough." She laughed again.
Matt wouldn't get used to hearing heartbeats from the ceiling. "To be fair, we did sleep this late, so-"
"Exactly. Murdock knows what's up!" Aura exclaimed with a snicker.
Claire laughed at that. "And in doing so probably ruined your sleep schedule even more. Congrats."
"As if it wasn't ruined already." Matt nudged Claire with a soft chuckle.
"Like I said, even more." She replied back with a smirk.
"Okay, you got me there." He said with a simple shrug.
She laughed a bit at that as Pepper came into the room. "Pete- how's the noodles doing- Oh!" She spotted Claire and Matt. "Hi, I'm not sure we've met yet- Pepper Potts." She shook Claire's hand and Claire guided Matt's to her.
"Claire Temple." She introduced herself.
Matt shook Pepper's hand firmly. "So you're the famous Ms. Potts I've heard about. It's good to know Tony has someone to keep him from flying too close to the sun." He joked. "Matthew Murdock."
Pepper actually laughed at that. "You have no idea how true that is. And it's nice to know someone still believes that help shouldn't have to be bought with money." She replied. "I've seen some of your work. It's been pretty impressive to have watched your firm grow and hold its own against some of the wolves out there in Hell's Kitchen."
"We try to help where we can. It's not easy, but if it makes a difference then it's all worth it in the end." Matt responded humbly. It was nice to have someone recognize his and Foggy's lawyer work, and not his extracurriculars.
She smiled at that. "I agree. And I'd definitely say it's been making a difference." She replied. "Not to mention you helping take care of Kasey."
Kasey smiled at that, her arm still wrapped around Matt's left arm.
"How could I not? She basically attached herself to me." Matt joked lightly. "But honestly she's a joy to have. She's a great kid."
Pepper smiled a bit wider at that, seeing Kasey "look" towards Matt in a bit of surprise before grinning and nuzzled into his side happily.
Claire chuckled. "Seriously, she's been pretty attached to him." She teased them lightly.
"Pretty sure the pasta water is boiling over-" Aurora warned from her spot on the ceiling.
Matt ruffled Kasey's hair again with a grin. He hadn't said it, but he felt she made his life a little brighter too.
Pepper spun around. "Shit-" She quickly came over and started stirring it again.
Kasey gasped offendedly and swatted at his hands, only for Claire to reach over and messed his hair up too.
"The betrayal-!" Matt gasped, now swatting at Claire's hand.
She laughed. "Hey- You got like eight inches on her, someone's gotta help her!"
Kasey grinned. "Yes!!"
"You horrible people, ganging up on the blind man-" He chuckled.
"I'm as blind as you are! You attacked me first!" Kasey argued, making Claire laugh again.
"She has a point you know," She replied with a grin.
"I saw no such thing." Matt denied, grinning wildly.
"THAT'S BECAUSE WE'RE BLIND!" Kasey argued, shoving his arm playfully. "Claireee!"
Claire just cackled when Kasey whined at her. "I mean- You can't argue with evidence like that, Kasey-"
"WHAT EVIDENCE?!"
"Exactly!" Matt responded with a chuckle. "Sorry Kasey but I think I won this case."
"What?! No! Peter, Aura, help me!" She turned towards her friends where Peter was sitting on the barstool, laughing as he watched.
"I dunno, what's in it for us?" Peter teased her.
"Yeah what do we get out of it? I'm happy where I am, with my garlic bread." As if to emphasize that, she took another crunch out of it.
Matt laughed darkly. "Looks like you on your own here Kasey-"
She groaned. "How about not constantly being on guard waiting for me to jump scare you for the next month?" She asked them flatly.
Peter snickered. "Mmm, I don't know-"
"I will give you the location of most of Tony's snack hiding spots."
Peter blinked. "Wait, do you really know-"
Kasey grinned. "How do you think I found them so easily?"
Aurora snickered. "Ooh how could you turn that down Pete? I'd take that offer." She grinned and shot out some webbing, sticking Matt's hand to a thread stuck to the ceiling. It was long enough so he could move, but short enough that he couldn't reach Kasey's head.
Matt pulled against the webbing, finding himself thoroughly stuck. "Foiled again! At least it was only one hand-"
She turned and laughed at that, stepping back from him. "At least I didn't tether you and Claire together again!"
Claire laughed a bit at that. "That's true-"
Matt nodded, tugging lightly at the webbing. "I appreciate that, I'd rather not be tethered to someone else."
Pepper had been watching and listening in amusement before turning the stove off. "Well, I suggest you help him get it off since dinner's ready."
"Oh! Shoot-" Aurora crawled across the ceiling to where the web was connected and stood, reaching out to disconnect it from Matt's hand. She stuck the other end onto the ceiling. "It'll disintegrate later."
Claire laughed. "I'm sure Tony appreciates it. "
"Appreciates what?" Tony asked as he came into the room.
Aurora immediately dropped from the ceiling. "Nothing-"
Matt chuckled, he wouldn't out anyone. Yet.
Tony squinted at her but let it be. "So dinner is ready?"
"Yep!" Pepper replied. "Feel free to grab a bowl."
Claire got herself and Matt a bowl.
Matt was grateful that Claire helped to keep his ruse going, even if he believed that he was slowly losing it. "Thank you."
Aurora followed after the guests, dishing herself a good helping of pasta.
Kasey and Peter did the same and took a seat at the island with their bowls.
Tony and Pepper did the same and they all sat around the island.
Claire looked at Tony. "Have you guys been making any progress on the files lately?"
He nodded. "I've gotten a good amount transferred to digital at this point."
Matt nodded, taking a seat next to Claire. "Kasey and I went through a few of them earlier. There's tons of evidence in there to put these people away for years."
This seemed to please both Claire and Tony.
"Hopefully longer than that." Tony replied. "They deserve to rot there."
"I second that." Matt agreed. They deserved a lot more than rotting in a jail cell. Maybe Matt would inform a few favored inmates of what the newbies had been up to.
Pepper hummed. "I'm sure we can figure something out to make it stick."
"I would say hire the best lawyer you could but, well-" Matt chuckled. "I'm already taking this one pro bono."
Pepper laughed a bit at that. "Which is appreciated." She replied. "Though we would be happy to pay you as well."
"As much as I would appreciate that, it also wouldn't look too great if a small firm like ours was suddenly getting paid by Tony Stark to take on such a huge case as this." Matt explained.
Pepper hummed. "Fair enough. What if we got you some upgraded equipment. Nothing too fancy or anything but something that would help things be a bit easier considering you're still growing rather quickly."
That was something Matt couldn't as easily turn down. "You guys really don't have to do that, Ms. Potts. But if you insist on that, then I suppose I can't say no. It would definitely make things easier."
"Then we will work on that then." She replied with a smile.
Matt nodded with a thankful smile and returned to his food. The following time was spent eating and chatting with the others.
