Chapter 105
Kasey finished up and set her plate by the sink, bouncing on her feet again. "The question now is, where do we build the fort?"
Aurora clapped her hands on his counter. "I vote for either the garage, or one of the bigger guest bedrooms."
"Considering the garage wouldn't be fun to sleep in, bedroom it is!" She decided with a laugh.
"You guys are gonna have to find that one. I don't know the layout of this place at all." He had to remind himself the other spiders just saw him as a blind man.
Kasey laughed a bit, remembering that he was indeed blind here, mostly cause it was his first time. "That's okay- We know where they are." She replied, hopping off the counter and waiting nearby.
Matt stepped to the side, taking Kasey's arm. He'd let her lead him to whatever room they chose, and he'd act like he had no idea where they were going.
Aurora finished her eggs and gathered the plates, setting them into the sink before coming over to the other two.
Peter followed suit, pushing the barstool back where he'd found it.
Kasey happily led him down the hall towards the bedrooms. "The one at the end of the hall on the right is pretty big. That work for you guys?" She tilted her head towards Peter and Aurora.
Peter sent a thumbs up, but quickly realized his mistake and pulled his phone out again. "Works for me!"
"I'm fine with that!" Aurora chirped. "Plus we could use the furniture there to incorporate into the fort."
Matt couldn't help but grin. It really felt like he was babysitting a bunch of kids.
She nodded and led Matt into the room, taking in the space they had to work with and letting Matt do the same. "How much you wanna bet Tony will either be impressed or upset with us-"
"My bet's on upset, but also impressed behind that facade he puts up." Aurora mentioned, taking a quick glance around the room.
Peter surveyed the room, already plotting good structure points for the fort. This should be easier than a pillow or blanket fort, because those objects didn't stick together on their own.
Matt got a good idea of the space, and the objects in the room. "I'll follow you guys."
Kasey nodded. "You guys wanna plan the layout and we go find some blankets and stuff?"
"Sure!" Aurora spoke up, pulling out her phone to use a small sketching app. She had downloaded it out of boredom, but it could come in handy now.
Kasey nodded and tugged Matt along behind her. "There should be a storage closet down this hall somewhere." She told him.
Peter helped Aurora come up with some ideas while they waited.
Once they got out of eyesight, Matt resumed his usual walking rhythm. "How many blankets do we need? Actually, how big are you guys wanting this thing anyway?"
She grinned at him. "The entire room." She sounded mischievous.
"The entire-" Matt snorted. "That's a huge space, you know. It is going to take you all forever. By the time it's done it won't be a fort, it will be a web mansion."
"Exactly!" She replied excitedly. "It's gonna be so good!" She found the closet and opened it up and started pulling blankets out.
Matt stood next to Kasey, waiting for her to load him up with blankets. "I'll help as much as I can then."
She happily filled his arms as full as he could manage and did the same for herself, leading him back down the hall.
Matt followed after Kasey, carrying his bundle of blankets back to the room. It would've been a funny sight, how the blankets stacked so high they blocked his face and yet he walked perfectly fine.
"We're back!" Kasey called as she entered the room and dumped the blankets in the corner.
Matt followed her example, going over to the corner and depositing them in the corner.
Aurora peeked up from her phone. "We've developed a sort of layout for the web fort, but we left some things open so you can let us know if things need changing."
"Great! Where do you want to start?" She asked them. "You're the ones who can actually see the plans-"
Peter's automated voice popped up next. "We've got the basics, which is the pillars holding most everything up, which can just be made out of thickened webs-" He continued on, explaining their ideas in his usual science-driven way.
Kasey nodded along, already starting to weave together some webbing to help out as they got started.
Matt barely understood a thing when it came to all the web-talk, but he did what he was told before. He'd hold the blankets and help to put them where it would help.
Aurora did a good amount of the ceiling work, having firmly told Peter she still didn't want him that high up just yet.
Peter agreed and mostly helped Matt on the ground so he could type easier.
Kasey helped where she was needed as they piece by piece, transformed the room.
Matt was surprised by how quickly they worked, finding they worked so smoothly as a team. While he couldn't see all the progress they made, he sure could sense it in the way the air moved around the webbing and blankets.
Aurora made sure to put up a few web and blanket hammocks around the fort, knowing that Kasey liked them. She had no idea if they'd feel the same.
It took about an hour for them to fully finish and Kasey grinned. "So- I'm now positive Tony's gonna be pissed but this was so worth it-"
Aurora dropped down beside the group, admiring their work. It really did look like a fort. "Our own little Spiders Nest!"
Matt grinned and clapped Kasey on the shoulder. He was proud of them, and proud of himself for loosening up like he had. "Good job."
She looked up at him, happy from the praise. "Thanks!" She replied before heading a bit deeper into the fort, "looking" back at him when he didn't follow. "Come on, dad!" She snagged his hand, gently tugging him inside with a grin.
Matt gave in to her calling him dad, and followed after Kasey into the fort. It was strange how sounds echoed off of the webbing around them, but it was also interesting.
Aurora sent Peter an expression that was a mix of amusement and confusion before she went in as well to admire their work from the inside.
Peter also looked confused but kinda shrugged at her as he followed behind her.
Kasey carefully navigated him to the center of the nest where they had made various hammocks and blanket nests on the ground. She happily pulled him to sit with her in one of the blanket nests.
She listened to the others come in. "How is it guys?"
Matt sat down in one of the nests, finding it to be extremely comfortable. He determined that Kasey had probably made this one, with how appealing it was sensory wise.
Aurora found her way to the center, climbing up to one of the higher hammocks. "It looks really good! No path obstructions or anything, and it's all holding steady!"
She happily snuggled up next to him, smiling as Peter took a seat in a lower hammock.
"It's perfect!" He agreed.
"What if we did this to every spare room in the tower-" She jokingly suggested.
"I'm sure that would definitely get Tony pissed off at you guys. And me, for not acting like an adult here." Matt told her with a laugh.
"I wouldn't be opposed. Every gray hair I give that man is serotonin to my brain." Aurora snickered from above them.
"You're gonna give him a heart attack one of these days!" Peter scolded her.
Kasey laughed. "But what else are we supposed to do? You guys have movies and video games. Me and Matt have to find something to entertain ourselves with."
Aurora peeked over the edge of her hammock at Peter. "That would prove that Tony Stark has a heart." She turned towards Kasey. "We could spar some?"
Matt nudged Kasey lightly. "That's not a bad idea. I know you were wanting to work on some stuff." He believed it would go without saying that they could spar too.
Peter grinned a bit. "It'd be a good way to burn off some energy!" He agreed.
Kasey however, glanced at Matt when he said that then at Peter when he agreed but Matt could hear the way her heart sped up a little.
But before he could say anything, he felt her shift slightly and take a deep breath. "Are you guys... sure? Aren't you still recovering?" She asked them.
Matt knit his brows together ever so slightly, listening to her heartbeat. Was she anxious? Did she not want to?
Aurora let out a puff of air. She had almost, blissfully, forgotten about the dull ache in her back. "Ugh. You're probably right. But I could suck it up if you still wanted to."
"I don't..." Kasey hesitated before sighing. "I don't want to risk hurting you guys more... I apparently, uh, get lost when I'm fighting..."
Peter frowned a bit at that. "Kasey, as long as you avoid my neck, I'll be fine-"
She shook her head. "I might try to but if I get too deep, I might not be so careful."
Matt wrapped an arm around Kasey in an attempt to comfort her. He knew this was a touchy subject.
"Kasey, that sounds pretty serious." Aurora looked down from above. "Do you want to talk about it?"
She let Matt pull her a bit closer, trying to do what he and Claire taught her in order to stay calm. "I'm not sure what there is to talk about... I still don't know when or why it triggers or much about it..." she replied.
He did what he knew, and ran his hand in circles on her back.
Aurora frowned, not liking that this was happening to Kasey. "I'm sorry to hear that.. It sounds difficult.."
She nodded. "It's scary... it's what I thought Tony wanted to bring me back here for but... guess it wasn't his main priority."
Peter frowned. "I remember him mentioning it..." He agreed. "But I think a friendly spar could help answer some questions and train you how to stop it. Only if you want to, of course."
Kasey hesitated and looked towards Matt. "What do you think?" After all, he had the most experience with how she acted.
Matt turned towards Kasey, thinking it over. It would be unfortunate if she got out of control again, but if need be he believed he'd be able to step in if she went too far. "I think if you're okay with it, you should try. The kid's right."
Peter pouted a bit at that but said nothing of it for the time being, letting Kasey focus.
She took a deep breath and nodded. "Okay... but please, stop me if I get too much." She requested of all three of them.
Aurora nodded and hummed in agreement. If anything happened, they had two spiders against one. So it shouldn't be that hard, right? Right?
"I'll do my best to." Matt reassured her. "But we probably shouldn't spar here. You'd destroy your hard work."
"Well yeah-" Kasey agreed. "We have a training room." She told him, pushing herself up and helping him up too.
Peter stood and stretched, heading to the door.
Matt stood up and stretched. He had to admit he was a bit nervous, this could easily spiral out of control.
Aurora dropped down from where she had been situated, quick to follow the others.
Kasey led him to the training room, following the others. Her grip was tight and he could tell she was still nervous.
Matt patted her hand gently as they came upon the training room. "Just relax. Try not to get worked up and things should turn out fine."
She nodded at that. "I'll... I'll try." She agreed as she headed over to the wrestling mats that they always tussled on.
Aurora found something to tie her hair back with, putting it back in a loose ponytail for now. "Who would you like to spar with?"
"Um... which of you feels the most up for it?" She asked in return.
Peter glanced at Aurora. "Are you sure you should with your back?"
Aurora looked back over at Peter. "Your throat is still healing, you got hit, and dropped on your noggin." She pointed out.
"I-" He stopped. "Fair enough."
Kasey looked at them both in surprise. "Wait, what?"
"Ooh-" Aurora winced, having forgotten to share that little tidbit of information. "When the glitch switch happened, the 'other Matt' put up quite a fight... One thing led to another and Peter got hit while the other Matt was fighting Tony, and fell. From the ceiling." She spoke nervously.
Fantastic. Now Matt had something new he had to feel completely guilty over. The other him had really gone after a kid like that? Jeez. "Kid I'm sorry-"
Peter started to wave his hands before typing fast. "No no no- He didn't hurt me-" He explained. "I uh... got shot by Tony-"
Well, that wasn't much better. At all. "Tony shot you? What the hell-" Matt started. Had he not been watching out for his own kid?
"It was my fault- I pulled him out of out of the way of Tony's shot by accident and it hit me instead-"
Matt sighed and shook his head. What was it with these kids and their bad luck? "You three really should be more careful. You're not invincible."
Peter rubbed the back of his neck. "We are... very aware of that by now..."
Matt let out an exhausted sigh, making a mental note to have a one on one talk with Tony about these kids later. "Anyway. Are you two ready to go?" Matt asked the other two spiders, although the question was more pointed towards Kasey. (edited)
Kasey nodded. "Guess so." She replied, shifting a bit, feeling the texture of the mats under her feet.
Aurora situated herself across from Kasey, stretching slightly. She had to be careful of her back, but other than that she was eager to do some friendly sparring.
"Ready when you are." She told Aurora, wanting to let her make the first move.
Aurora observed Kasey for a moment before going in. She swooped down, going to sweep Kasey's legs out from under her. It was a basic move, but hopefully a simple one to start with.
And she completely misses as Kasey leaps over the sweep and pins her to the ground, trying her hardest not to hurt her.
That was an embarrassing first move. She pulls her feet up and places them against Kasey to try and push her off. No way she'd let the spar end in under a minute.
She was successful in pushing her off and onto the mat, Kasey having to try to take a min to get herself back up.
Okay. Now we're back up. Aurora thought to herself. She took the opportunity of Kasey being down and went after her again, sending a hit towards her stomach.
Kasey let out an oof and doubled over back onto her knees. She pushed back up, spun and kicked at her.
Aurora was caught off guard by the kick, and it landed solidly against her side. Before she could fall flat, she used her hands and sprung off the ground. She went in for another low sweep.
Kasey cried out as she fell back, hitting the ground but kicked back at her.
Aurora jumped back, dodging Kasey completely. She was quick to retaliate, going in to drop the heel of her foot down on Kasey's stomach. She still didn't want to aim for her head.
Kasey gasped in shock before pulling her leg out from under her but it only resulted in Aurora falling on top of her.
She let out a soft 'oof' sound as she fell, before groaning. This wasn't really going as planned. She rolled to the side and got back up, stepping back and getting into another sparring stance.
Kasey pushed up as well, bracing herself and swinging at her.
Aurora ducked under the swing, before turning and reaching up in an attempt to grab Kasey's arm and pull her over.
Kasey gasped as she was grabbed and pulled over, unable to break away.
Aurora dropped her and stepped back. "Don't be pulling any punches on me Kasey."
Kasey tried to swing at her again but still withheld herself. She didn't want to hurt her...
Aurora took the hit, but found it wasn't as strong as she expected. "Come on, I know you can do better than that." She goaded her.
But instead it was a lighter hit.
Matt could hear the way her heartbeat gave away her anxiousness.
Aurora took that hit too, this time she didn't even bother to try and dodge. "Kasey." She spoke firmly. "If you want to spar seriously, you've got to stop pulling your punches. Trust me, I'll be okay."
Matt had trained his attention on Kasey, to check on her and make sure she didn't go too far. At this point, he didn't think they'd go far at all.
Kasey listened to her and heard her heartbeating steadily so she took a deep breath, spun and kicked her in the chest.
Aurora barely had time to react before Kasey's foot connected with her chest. She was knocked back a few feet, but grinned anyway. "That's more like it!" She jumped forward, sending a punch towards her.
She cried out in surprise when the punch knocked her off her feet and hit the mat with a thud. She laid there panting a bit heavily, too stuck in her own thoughts to really focus on the spar.
Aurora hadn't expected that, the previous hit having convinced her Kasey was going to get into it. She came over and took one of her hands gently to help her up. "You okay? I didn't mean to knock you back that hard. If you want to stop, we can."
Kasey carefully got up to her feet. "Y-yeah- I'm okay," she reassured her, hesitating before nodding reluctantly. "And... yeah... let's...let's stop..." she muttered softly.
Aurora sighed. "Maybe we can try again another time." So that was a huge flop. She didn't know what was holding Kasey back, but it was concerning.
Kasey gave a small nod at that, carefully brushing her hair out of her face. She looked a bit upset by the whole thing.
Peter frowned, coming over. "You okay?"
"I-" she stopped, remembering her promise and sighed. "I'm not ready..." she replied quietly.
Matt came over, putting an arm around Kasey. "That's completely okay if you think you're not ready. What matters is that you're working on it." He told her.
Aurora took her hair down, slipping the tie around her wrist. "Yeah, you landed a solid hit near the end, that has to count for something."
Kasey glanced towards Matt then Aurora and nodded slightly. "I'm just..." She sighed. "I'm scared of hurting you guys..." She admitted, looking away, her body tensing up.
"Kasey..." Aurora frowned. "We will be alright. I think if we can manage to lift a few tons, we can take some of your hits." She tried to put on a comforting demeanor. "I'm not afraid of your strength Kasey, you shouldn't be either."
Tears spilled down her face and she shook her head. "I-I can't-" She replied, her chest tightening. "How can I not be scared when I've killed people with it??" She asked her, starting to tremble a bit.
She was a bit taken aback by that. Sure, she had heard about Kasey getting a little out of control but... to have killed someone? "What..?"
Matt frowned and nudged Kasey. "We don't have to talk about this if you don't want to."
She did acknowledge Matt but answered Aurora. "I... I killed someone..." Her voice was soft.
Aurora bit her lip, having hoped that she heard Kasey wrong. But nope, she had heard her right. "Please tell me it was at least someone who deserved it. Tell me you didn't kill someone innocent-"
"No! I- No... They... they deserved it." She reassured her. "Maybe... Maybe not the way I did it but... They did deserve it. It was someone from Blackout. They were attacking me and Daredevil at the time..."
Peter nodded a bit. "You were defending yourself and him." He reassured her.
Aurora let out a breath of relief. It still wasn't something good, but at least it was deserved. "Kasey, that's self defense, and you shouldn't be ashamed of that."
Matt listened to them all, finding that it was going better than he thought. At least they weren't jumping down her throat about it.
"But I... The method in which I did it was..." She shook her head. "I wasn't in control... I hardly even remember it honestly..."
"Which is why we're working on it." Matt reminded her. He hated to hear her beat herself up over this.
"Kasey, you really shouldn't dwell on it. You'll work yourself up if you do." Aurora told her gently.
"I know... I've already done that a few times." She admitted with a sigh. "And yeah... we're working on it but... It's still scary to think there's even the slightest chance of me hurting one of you like that..."
"Honestly? I don't think you would." Aurora said confidently. "I trust you, and I think that your subconscious would be able to tell the difference between friend and foe."
"You say that..." Kasey muttered, remembering having bit Matt... twice.
Peter frowned. "She's right, Kasey. I can't see you-"
"I bit Matt." She cut him off, not looking towards them. "...Twice."
Matt winced at that. Yeah, she had, but he harbored no bad feelings against her for it. "Kid, that wasn't your fault-"
Aurora was shocked to hear this information. So maybe she wasn't really in control. "That's... wow."
Peter was also surprised to hear this. "You- You weren't kidding-"
"Yeah... And maybe it wasn't but it still happened." She replied with a sigh.
Matt waited in silence, before speaking up again. "Come on, let's try not to worry about it too much right now. Okay Kasey?"
She just gave a small nod. "Sorry..." She muttered softly.
"Don't be sorry, I-" He let out a sigh. "I don't want you beating yourself up over it."
"I'm trying... I know it wasn't me but it doesn't make me less scared of it happening again."
"I know. The best thing we can do is work towards keeping that from happening. It's okay to be scared of something like that, but don't go off with a mindset that it's certain it will happen." Matt tried to explain.
She gave another small nod. "Okay..." She agreed quietly.
"Okay." Matt said. "Do you want to rest a while or do something else?"
She hesitated, thinking for a minute. "I think I wanna lie down for a bit..." She replied, feeling kinda tired.
"I think that's a good idea." Matt told her. This must've been stressful for her.
Aurora rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly, and motioned out of the room. "I think I'm gonna work on my suit for a while-"
"You want some help?" Peter offered her. He wanted to let Kasey rest if that's what she wanted to do.
"Sure, I've basically got to remake the whole thing. I could use some help on the wiring." Aurora accepted the help.
Matt turned towards Kasey. "I'll walk with you wherever you want to go."
"Okay..." Kasey gently tugged him out of the room and back towards the fort. She was quiet as she led him down the hall.
Matt followed after, the silence becoming tense. "You okay?"
"I don't know..." she replied. "I... I thought sparring would be a good thing to try but..." she shrugged.
"I thought it would be too. Guess we were both wrong weren't we?" Matt asked with a small sigh. "Don't get too worked up over it though. Some things just don't work out."
She just nodded again. "Maybe just bad timing? I... I don't know." She led him into the fort and to the nest and sat down, leaving room for him to join her.
"Could be." Matt sat down next to her without a second thought. Oftentimes he wondered how his life came to this, caring after Kasey, and now he was sitting in a fort made out of webs.
She curled up next to him with a sigh. "I wish this was easier to figure out..." She mumbled.
"Me too kid, me too." Matt wrapped an arm around her and leaned his head against her. He wished she could just live the life a normal teen could have.
She hummed softly as she got comfy next to him. "Maybe I was just tired from fort building..." She sounded tired.
"Yeah, that could be." Matt agreed with her, trying to lull her to sleep. "Go ahead and get some sleep, Kase. I'll be here til you wake up."
She nodded at that and curled up next to him, her head lying on his leg as she drifted off.
Matt waited for her to fall asleep before contemplating everything that had happened. It didn't take long before he passed out too.
