Ch. 02 ★ Nathan. Nathan Salzburg
I felt slightly guilty that I had to throw up in his tidy bathroom. He had no bucket or basket so I pretty much didn't have any other choice.
I walked out of this modern washroom. Disoriented, I pricked up my ears and followed the sound of the television.
At the end of the hallway, a well-equipped kitchen stood out, whereas on the other side, on my right, the living room claimed half of the entire space. Amidst them my psychopath-kidnapper was seated. He laid out two dishes and a bowl. Then his eyes found me. He gestured me to sit.
"Are you feeling better?" he asked with concern.
"Yeah, thanks for asking," I replied
politely. To be honest he seemed older than me and he didn't really act like a potential psychopath besides his voice deceiving act, which I named voda.
But that didn't mean I trust him. I was still skeptical about how he locked me up, without any options for escape.
My eyes drifted to his living room. It housed the newest filter-screen television. The wands were evenly coloured with cherry-red and white stripes. The furniture was all in black, including the kitchen. Altogether it had that typical high-society-feeling. However it lacked character and that troubled me. I couldn't use any of this to gather information about him.
"You have a nice apartment." Let's start with that right now. Perhaps I could get him to talk about his family or his life.
"Thanks."
He split the croissant in
two, smeared some Nutella on both sides and dug in. Meanwhile he handed me one. But I was not having any appetite -with the whole barfing and all-, so I refused.
This was getting nowhere. He wasn't the very talkative type.
I sighed, "Listen, I am very confused now, because I woke up in a stranger's room and got locked up. I don't know anything at all, my memories are blurry and suddenly you showed up, making the already clueless me even more troubled. Just tell me something. What the hell is going on?!"
"The answer is in your mind. You will eventually find out," he hesitated for three seconds and added, "I think."
"Just tell me..."
"Everything on its' time."
"Why can't you just tell me now? Why!"
He decided to ignore me and propped the last piece of breakfast in his mouth. After swallowing it, there was a stern look on his face and he announced, "There are three rules you have to obey in this apartment. First, you may not leave this place. It is dangerous for you and for me."
He simply dodged my question and now he came up with some rules? Jeez...gain some respect. Whether I'm happy with it or not, he has the upper hand. I'm merely a guest who intrudes in his 'beautiful' living place.
I snorted at his first rule, "The world has always been a dangerous place and I managed fine anyways. Just let me go already."
At these words he glared seriously and retorted, "The dangerous level here is that of a kill-or-be-killed-level. Are you ready for that?"
I swallowed, I've never dealt with much danger. The most perilous
situation I've faced was having a count-down with my dad. I felt intimidated but curious to his rules. He seemed to care about me.
"Sorry, please continue."
"Second rule, you will always listen to me. If I tell you to run, you run. If I tell you to hide, you hide. Okay?"
I nodded. Were we playing some military game? Where I was a soldier and he my commander-general? "Yes sir!" I saluted. But in my head there was still a quiet voice murmuring "No sir!"
Sadly he wasn't in for some humor and straight out brushed off my soldiery greeting.
"And thirdly, also the most important one, you will never and I repeat NEVER talk to anyone besides me. You get it?"
I protested, "No, why do I have to follow these rules? I want to go home! I have to call my dad!"
"So you remember your dad?" I gave a uncertain nod. It seemed like a massive burden was lifted from his shoulders and he clarified why. "Actually, your dad agreed to take you with me. So now you just have to trust me and be a good girl"
"What, my dad did?" I frowned.
"You did too, but due to some
circumstances, you don't remember," he spilled out.
"What were those circumstances? And why can't I remember?" I interrogated him. My eyes pierced at him, his every move was under suspicion.
He defended himself "I'm just
protecting you! For your own good! The less you know, the better!"
It's like a scenery in movies and
books. Where one person thinks what's best, but the ignorant part would eventually get the heroine in trouble. I reasoned "At least, tell me why my memory is so foggy."
He avoided my gaze and began his silent treatment.
☆......................................................................................................☆
The following hours, I kept pestering him. I annoyed the hell out of him like a zooming fly, endlessly firing questions at him. It was until I budged into his privacy -when he was showering-, that he couldn't stand it anymore. Naive me, went a step too far and he punished me. He casted some spells at me, which compelled me to freeze and my voice to mute.
He hoisted me over his shoulders and tossed me in his leather couch. I could only see the black fabric as I laid on my belly.
Luckily he rolled me on my back. For now I could breath again.
The night fell and I haven't eaten yet. A seductive smell of chicken caused my stomach to rumble. I don't know if he heard or planned it anyway, but he freed me out of my trance.
"I made dinner. Let's eat."
"Nah. I'm just going to starve myself," I snarled. I was sore of not moving.
"Sorry, but I really can't tell you. Okay? What good does this to you and your hungry stomach?" He heard.
"Don't you pretend to care about me! You just used magic on me. I despise that!" I resented him.
"Fine! I'll tell you, but promise me, you will hear me out." The blue in his eyes shimmered.
"Okay. I will, now cough up!"
"I had to restart your brain," he blurted. His stance went into defensive mode.
"You did what!?" I yelled.
Oh no, don't tell me option 3 came true [kidnapped by a psychopath and memory loss]? This can't be happening! Well now he really does act like a psychopath, aside from the voda. He noticed my instant mood switch and probably wanted to make up some excuses. But I didn't want to hear it.
I spurted to my room and locked the door. In no time I wrapped myself in the blankets.
☆......................................................................................................☆
Knock. Knock. Knock.
"Hey! Open up," he shouted.
He knocked another three times.
I said nothing. How could he! Even
when he knew that there were fatal risks with memory-spells. It is not like if you could use magic that you were allowed to do anything. There were clear rules! That's what the academy taught me. I would've never agreed to do that! I'm too much of a control freak. He was just lying his head off.
"I know you're uncomfortable, but it's hard on me too. I knew you would be mad. Just give me another chance. Please..."
I kept my mouth shut. I can't easily
forgive someone who messed with my brains. He's nuts.
"You promised me!" He threatened with a desperate voice.
I remained unyielding, because I was the stubborn type. Promises are easily broken. Just like trust fades away with every misstep.
The door poofs away -suddenly vanished-.
Oh right. He is a sorcerer. Of course opening a door was child's play. Or in this case removing it.
I turned away. He neared me. "Hey
uhm, we didn't start off on the good foot. We...I didn't know what you'll be like after the incident," he justified.
I still gave no reaction, but then I felt a breeze. I took a quick peek. He was flowing one inch above me. I flinched. "What the hell?" He was so close. My breathing was messed up. I slapped him, or was planning to, but he deflected it. Then I tried to move away, but he grabbed my cheeks. "Damn it. Look into my eyes, Mirith!"
Wait a minute, did he just called my name? So all this time he knew...speaking of creepy.
"Does these eyes look like they want to hurt you?" he almost whispered. His eyes were beautiful, blue like the ocean and oh so sincere. I felt naked as he was staring in my dark brown eyes. Like he could see through me and read my thoughts. Suddenly I paid attention to the positions we were lying in. My cheeks colored red. I could feel his breath on my neck.
I muttered, "No not really, but who
knows what you're planning"
"Who are you?" I asked again.
This time he gave me a clear answer.
"I'm Nathan. Nathan Salzburg."
