Chapter 31:
Scarlet was extremely beautiful. She knew that. Besides, with all the extra unwanted attention she got from the jocks at school, and most of the time boys outside from school, it was kinda hard to ignore.
Today wasn't any different.
She slammed her locker door shut as Anton asked her out, yet again.
"Anton, for the umpteenth time, I have better things to do than date you," She said, "No."
"Come on, Scarlet, just give it a try, I know you'll love me then," He urged, and Scarlet turned her head to glare at him.
"No." Her voice left no room for argument.
"But-"
"N-O spells no."
Just then, she spotted Dune.
Finally, she thought, someone. Someone who she was friends with.
"Hello Scarlet," He shot a smile at her then turned his gaze to Anton.
"Hello, Anton," He said, shaking the other boy's hand.
"Hello, Dune," Anton replied stiffly.
"I guess we should be heading to our classes now," She said gleefully.
"Yes, I suppose," Anton said in a dull way, then walked off with a 'good-bye'.
She smiled at Dune as the two started walking in comfortable silence to their first class: Maths.
-----
It had been a few days, and the twins had been dispatched from the hospital. They were returning to school today. No wonder Kestrel was exceptionally cheerful today.
"You're awfully chipper today," Webs raised an eyebrow at her, "is LB coming back to school today?"
She punched his arm lightly as she realised what LB stood for, and he chuckled, "So he is."
They turned down a corner, and she almost jumped with happiness as she saw him.
"Chameleon!" She shrieked, running over to him and giving him a hug.
"Surprise?" He hugged her back.
"You were literally with him every day he was in the hospital," Webs' voice rang, "But still you're so happy to see each other every other day, I wonder why..."
"Shut up, baka," She mumbled into Chameleon's chest, but her voice reached him nonetheless. The blue eyed boy rolled his eyes.
"I missed you too," Chameleon said with equal ferocity.
They finally let go of each other, and Webs let out an 'aww.' As in disappointment.
-----
Hvitur snapped his fingers in front of Asha's face in an attempt to snap her out of her daze.
"Sorry," She apologised, still in a half-faze.
"What is it that has my Pinkie so engrossed?"
"Chameleon and our little Kestrel," She sighed dreamily.
"Ohhh," He realised, "Those two lovebirds."
Asha nodded, her chin resting in her hand, "Yeah..."
"Honestly, I'm just waiting for those two to realise."
"That's the problem!" She snapped her head towards him, "They just don't freaking realise!" The look in her eyes slightly scared him.
"So we need to...make them realise?" He asked, unsure.
"No," She shook her head, "They need to realise themselves. We do not interfere."
He nodded, his hand resting on hers, lacing their fingers together.
-----
Kestrel internally cheered in delight, as she usually did, when the last bell rang.
She quickly gathered her all her stuff, taking the time to neatly place them inside her binder. Chameleon did the same with his.
She stood up, holding her binder to her chest, and waited for Chameleon to finish his cleaning up. Once he was done, he stood up, and the two walked out of the classroom, parting ways to get to their own lockers.
Kestrel went to hers, and Webs was already there, leaning against his locker. She turned the dial for the three digits, and opened it. She placed her things inside and pulled out her black and red bag, hanging it over her shoulder.
She turned around to find that Chameleon was already waiting for her, standing there, his hands by his sides. Honestly, she was surprised by how stealthy he could be at times.
She could sense that he was nervous about something. Really nervous.
-----
On the outside, Chameleon kept calm, walking with his head held up, his hands at his sides, maintaining a steady pace.
But on the inside, he was a wreck.
As she turned around to face him, her sunset eyes smiling before her lips did, he wondered why he hadn't decided sooner.
"Hey!" She said happily.
"Hey," He offered her a smile, before his hand traveled up to the back of his neck.
"Kestrel, I..." He pursued his lips tightly, "I wanted to ask you something."
"Mhm," She hummed, giving him her full attention.
"Well, you see... we've been friends a long time, and I just..."
Gosh, Chameleon, how long does it take to spew out eight words? A voice chided in his head, and he snapped back, shut up.
He made sure that he spoke every word clearly, even though he usually did, and didn't rush it,"Will you go on a date with me?"
-----
It took all her willpower to not jump in delight when he asked.
Before he could even speak, she had said, "Yes."
All the anxiety was gone from his eyes and replaced with happiness, as he smiled.
"I'll pick you up at five?" He suggested, his eyes shooting to something over her shoulder.
"Sure,"
They exchanged a quick, brief hug, then he walked away.
Two hands rested on her shoulder as a voice whispered in her ear, "Love is in the aiiiirrrrr."
She rolled her eyes and leaned back into his chest, her hand reaching up to give a tug on his hair.
"Ow," Webs muttered as she did, "Why do you two women keep abusing me?"
"Because we can," She poked his shoulder, then grabbed his wrist, "Come on, we have to get back home, right?"
"And we have to get you ready for your very first date!" He clapped his hands together, then pinched her cheek.
"Our baby Kestrel's very first date," He cooed, "She's all grown up!"
She turned around to punch his shoulder, hard and he stumbled back slightly.
"Shut up!" She muttered, a blush near visible on her cheeks.
-----
