Chapter 8
On the next day, after class. Dino and Kezia walked down the sidewalk. Dino suggested that they should grab a taxi but Kezia refused, she said that she was mentally preparing herself for what awaited her.
"What if he is disappointed in me? What if he thinks that I'm a failure?"
Dino who is silent beside her didn't answer.
"My family was quite a mess when he died. Do you think that he is hurt? Is he disappointed?"
Kezia fell silent for a while before saying her next thoughts.
"You said that he's just there all the time and is always by my side. Do you think that he might've been lonely? Do you think that he might've been sad because he can't talk to anyone?"
Dino is staring at Kezia's face the whole time as if his whole attention is hers and hers alone.
"I don't know but you don't have to worry anymore, since you would be able to talk to him later." then he smiled sincerely.
Kezia tried to smile at him too but it turned fake. "Yeah. . ."
Time passed by and they finally arrived at their house. Dino looked up to get a better view of their house. He didn't have the chance when they were doing the project. Kezia went beside him and looked up too.
"Majestic isn't it?" Kezia asked about their house.
"Yeah."
"But it's lonely living here."
Silence enveloped the two but it was destroyed when Kezia sighed heavily.
"Let's go, maybe Grandpa is waiting for us."
"Yeah, he is actually beside you right now."
Kezia's body leaped along with her heart and immediately clung to Dino.
"Don't say scary things like that all of a sudden!" Kezia whined which made Dino laugh.
Don Antonio glared at Dino and yet all Dino could do is to flash his sheepish smile. He tries to break free from Kezia but her grip is too strong as if her life depends on it. Dino can't do anything but let her be yet instead, he has to put up with Don Antonio's fiery glare that is shooting like daggers.
They positioned in the living room, the two sat on the sofa.
"How should we start?" Dino asked.
Kezia looked down, she didn't know where. All her questions that she mentioned earlier suddenly vanished like thin air.
"H-how are you?" Kezia suddenly asked at nothing.
Dino looked at Don Antonio who was also sitting at one of the sofa. Don Antonio smiled.
"Tell her that his Grandpa is happy to see her Granddaughter grow up as a fine and wonderful lady."
"He said that he is happy to see you grow as a fine and wonderful lady," Dino repeated.
What Dino said stirred something in her. Her eyes turn glassy because of the tears that are coming out as her lips tremble. She tried to mask it off with a laugh.
"What's with these tears?" she then wiped them off. "Fine and wonderful lady, my face." She tried to lighten the atmosphere. "I can hardly agree with that." Kezia immediately glared at Dino.
"Tell her that Grandpa is sorry that I can't be with her anymore."
"He says that he's sorry because he can't be with you anymore."
Kezia bit her lips. "Why is he sorry? It's not like it's his choice."
"I was worried. It was one of the reasons why I couldn't go. It's because I can't leave you just yet."
"He was worried. He said it was one of the reasons why he can't go because he can't leave you behind."
"I was in so much anger about what they did to you. I want to say sorry because it's his fault. I wasn't able to teach your mother right? If only I did, maybe you won't be suffering as much."
"He said that he was angry about what they did to you. He wants to say sorry because it is his fault. He wasn't able to teach your Mother right. If he did, maybe you won't be suffering as much."
The only thing Kezia could do was shake her head.
"My granddaughter, I want you to live a good life, eat well, do the things that make you happy, and do the things that you want as long as it's not illegal. I know that you may encounter hardships but I know that you'll get over it. Seeing you so grown up right now, I think that you'd be fine."
"He wants you to live a good life, to eat well, do the things that make you happy, and do the things that you want as long as it's not illegal. He knows that you may encounter hardships but he knows that you'll get over it. Seeing you so grown up right now, He thinks that you'd be fine."
"But my only wish for my Granddaughter is . . . to make mistakes. Don't be afraid to do so, because mistakes are where we learn from, because the things that we learn make us aware of what is right and wrong and in that way the next time around we will be able to do it right."
"His only wish for you is to make mistakes. Don't be afraid to do so, because mistakes are where we learn from, because the things that we learn make us aware of what is right and wrong and in that way the next time around you would be able to do it right."
Kezia can't help but laugh. "What the? Of course I know that."
"I'm glad to know that. I have no time left. I have to go first."
"He says that he has no time left, he's going first."
"Where?" Kezia tilted her hair.
"I don't know maybe in heaven? Hell?" Dino shrugged.
"Oh." Kezia understood what he meant, she tried to understand what she felt. She wonders if it is pain or sadness.
"I'm sorry that I had to say goodbye again. I'm sorry that I have to go."
"He says that he's sorry that he has to say goodbye again and he's sorry that he has to go."
"No-no!" Kezia shook her head frantically. "Grandpa, if you're hearing this. I just want to say that I'll be fine. You don't have to worry and be stuck anymore. I know it will be hard, but I can do it. So rest now, especially that it is now long overdue."
A smile slowly made its way to Don Antonio's lips. It's as if a burden has finally been lifted from her shoulders, it's like a nail that was removed from his heart. Now, he can finally rest in peace.
