Prologue - A Life, Unlike You?
"Hi, my name is Halley Carter and I have been put in here against my will," she turns to the she-devil that forced her to come here who is sitting at the desk to her right.
She looks at Miss Lucious and sees the stern look she's giving her.
"Can you elaborate on that Miss Carter?" Miss Lucious pries.
Fake smiling, Halley continues, "how would you like me to do so?"
Halley never liked Miss Lucious, ever since she met her they just wouldn't get a long. They had completely different personalities. The young thirteen your old herself was different. Different than everyone else. Every kid in this room was, that's why they were all there.
"Perhaps you can mention the reason you're here. Explain to the rest what you have."
"A life, unlike you?" Halley was definitely not in a good mood today. She didn't want to give the reason why she was different. When people know you're different, they see that as a weakness, therefore to them you're vulnerable and pathetic, and she was definitely neither of those things.
The others silently chuckled and Miss Lucious' face turned a fire truck-red as she scowled. What an ugly face the poor woman had.
"If you're constipated, as your emotions seem to show, I suggest you head towards the ladies room," she points in the direction to the bathroom, "turn left, then right, and it'll be right there."
Flabbergasted was the only word to describe what Chantal Lucious was feeling. Obviously, no one had ever spoken to her like that before. That fact didn't quite surprise Halley. "Take a seat and shut your mouth young lady!" Miss Lucious pushes herself up from her seat, slamming her fists in to the desk.
"Yes ma'am," Hal sighs contently as she reaches her seat. She just dodged a major bullet. Smooth.
~~~~~
The whole day of school was completely awful for Halley. It was extraordinarily boring and unnecessary. After her first day, she headed to the top of the hill near her home. That was a regular place she'd go to get away from everyone else. As she laid down, looking at the stars she sighed.
"Hey." Her whole body tensed. Someone was standing behind her, as a reflex, she shot upwards and backed away. Almost tripping backwards, the stranger runs forward grabbing her wrist and saving her from her almost fall. She observed the boy standing in front of her. He had brown hair and the most beautiful shade of green eyes she'd ever seen. Halley quickly pulled away from his touch.
Looking down at what she'd just done, he put his arms back to his sides, placing both hands in his pockets. Then his eyes met hers again.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you." He scanned her face waiting for her reply.
"You didn't want to scare me? What do you think sneaking up on someone will do?" The boy frowned, immediately, Halley wished she could take back her words.
"I'm sorry, that was mean... but who are you?" Panic flickered in her eyes, why had he been there? Did he see her from the bottom of the mountain? If he did, how long had he been watching her? Instinctively, he reached to put a hand on her shoulder to comfort her, observing her features as he did so. She had dark brown hair and eyes. Almost as in a daze by looking at her, he finally remembered how she had reacted when they made contact the first time, so he pulled back again.
"Landon Wensley, and what's your-"
"Why are you here?"
"-name?" Smiling slightly he continues, "well someone's quick to asking questions."
Halley realizes Landon isn't a threat, therefore her shoulders relax. He watches her, expecting her to say something. When she doesn't reply, he answers her question.
"I saw you from far. Thought you'd want company."
They stood there like that for a bit. It seemed to be forever when Halley noticed the sky. It was blue, but, the lower you looked, the more it turned to a beautiful shade of pink. The sun was going down, which meant Halley had to go.
"I have to head back home." She walked passed him and began descending the hill. Landon remained on the top of the hill, staring at where she used to stand.
Turning around and looking at the girl ahead he shouted, "Hey! I didn't get your name!"
Without turning around to face him she shouted back, "It's Halley!"
"Halley, you shouldn't be walking home alone this late. I can come with y-"
Smiling to herself, she stopped to turn around. He still stood tall on the mountain, he was looking directly at her. He seemed pretty nice.
"Bye Landon!" She began walking away again.
Smiling at her retreating figure he whispered to himself, "Bye Halley."
