Tailor vs. Dressmaker

A/N: I'm wasting time. Enjoy. This is when you meet the active/critical/overthinking side of me.

I was filling out a character profile, and I was thinking what the character's parents occupations were going to be. I made his dad a healer and his mom a tailor. But wait. The only Tailors I've ever heard about were men. So should she be a Dressmaker?

Is there some thing where only men can be tailors, and only women can be dressmakers? According to my dictionary, a tailor is someone who make's men's suits to fit a certain person. So a tailor makes men's clothes. So it would make sense if a person who made men's clothes was a man. Right? But the second definition had it as just someone who makes specially fitted clothes. Specially fitted clothes could include dresses.

My dictionary's first definition of dressmakers is: one who makes dresses and other clothes. It's second definition was: someone who makes women's clothes. So a woman would probably rather make women's clothes. Right?

Of course they don't have too. A tailor can just be someone who makes specially fitted clothes. So like, a tailor makes specially fitted clothes, and a dressmaker makes premade dresses for whoever? Or maybe there are dressmakers who make specially fitted dresses?

So... I guess men can be dressmakers, and women can be tailors. Of course, I can imagine that a lot of guys would rather make guy's clothes... And a lot of girl's would rather make girl's clothes...

So, to conclude, the character's mom will be a dressmaker.

Hope you enjoyed reading about my little moment of overthinking. (P.S. I rarely heed these moments. I just let 'em pass. (Exactly like Gandalf didn't do for that poor Balrog. (not like it deserved it or anything...)))
