Chapter 17- A Sleepless Night
Sleep that night, did not come as easy as it had the previous night. Etu's question had both annoyed and frustrated Emily. She had not given an answer, as it was not his business, nor his concern. It seemed to Emily, that Etu noticed her frustration, as he had turned his attention to Magena.
The remainder of that day, Emily felt alone as the two Indians went back and forth, their language rolling off their tongue and making perfect sense. Yet as it reached Emily's ears, the words entangled and become a jumble of incoherent sounds.
Now the night was silent. Both brother and sister were already asleep and it ate on Emily's nerves, considering she craved sleep. Her apron still proved useful as a pillow; though still in desperate need of a wash. Emily had embraced the peacefulness of the forest, but tonight it was unnerving. The stars above seemed to stare down at her accusingly. The moon was a spotlight, as if to show the pilgrims where to find her.
These thoughts became frightening and Emily sat up, unable to find peace. Though she detested it, her thought drifted to the Smith family.
'What were they doing? Surely they had missed me by now. Are they worried?'
Emily stood abruptly and forced away these thoughts. What did she care of the Smiths? Now that she was standing, she quietly left their little camp and walked a little ways into the trees.
As she wandered, her mind did as well. Unwanted thoughts and memories came to the forefront. Her father's deep rich laugh, her mother's beautiful and kind smile. Her brother's mischievous and playful attitude. These thoughts had not haunted her since she first met Magena. Now it was too much.
She started to run. Not caring where she was going, only going. She would run for days if only to out run her past. But she could not. And before long her strength was spent and she was forced to stop.
"Why did we ever get on that ship? We should have stayed in England." She muttered to herself.
At a slower pace she kept going. The tree branches swayed slightly and Emily could not help but think they were motioning her foward.
'Or to go back.' She considered.
Back to what though? Magena and Etu or her village?
"No. I shall never go back there. There is nothing to go back to." She spoke sternly. Though as she said these words, an image of little Betty Smith came to mind. The time when she had brought Emily that flower.
Emily scowled as she also remembered the events of that previous night. Her argument with Mr. Smith, and when he had- Emily involuntarily touched a hand to her face where it had been struck. For a split second she recalled the sting of the slap and it angered her.
Blinded by her hot fury she kept walking until she stopped and looked about. Her anger subsided briefly as she realized she had come a long way, further than she had intended. She began to turn back to the camp when suddenly an unmistakable sound made her skin crawl.
It was the howl of a wolf.
Emily, her eyes wide, tried to calm her racing heart. The darkness was dreadful and all around her she felt danger lurking. Another howl called out, only closer.
Finally Emily Johnston seemed to realize that she had been slowly backing up this whole time. It had been unnoticed until her back leaned into something. She nearly let out a scream, instead her finger tips brushed the object behind her and she sighed in relief. It was only a tree.
Her relief did not last though. Another howl, then another answered back.
Emily's mind raced. 'If I call for Etu I shall give myself away. I spent all my energy running and would be caught if I tried to flee. If only I hadn't left the camp!'
Through the complete darkness, there came shinning eyes. One pair, two pair, then another came. All watching the girl, and coming closer.
Emily trembled. Her knees threatened to buckle. She had never been so terrified in all her life.
"Father, I wish you were here." She plead in a whisper.
A feeling of another presence seemed to draw Emily's attention from the coming terror. She fearfully turned to see something that made her mouth open in surpirse. Just a short distance away, there was a different light. A lantern swinging in the hand of a tall figure. The light was bright enough that she noticed the entrance of a cave that the person was standing beside. Emily watched as the light began to go inside the cave, and disappeared.
Without question, Emily knew what her next move was. Calling for help would be useless. She had to run.
And run she did.
