Chapter Four
Alright, who's next Carrie, Favorite poem, Did you bring one? Mr. Ulmann asked Carrie. Some students turned to look at Carrie and laughed. Why don't you come to the front of the class and share it with us all? Mr. Ulmann asked Carrie. Alice watched Carrie get up and walk up to the front of the class as some students laughed again. Alice was curious of what favorite poem of Carrie that Carrie was going to read.
Carrie opened her book. This... this unfrequented place to find some ease. Ease to the body some, Carrie said, as Alice did her best to tune out the laughter to listen to Carrie. None to the mind, times past, and what... what I was and what am now, O wherefore was my birth from heaven. Twice by an Angel, who at last in sight of both my parents, all in flames...ascended, Carrie finished.
Ok, that was disturbing, Mr. Ulmann said, as the students laughed again. That is the most you've said in class all year, Mr. Ulmann told Carrie. Is there anything else you'd like to share or are you done scaring us for the day? Mr. Ulmann asked Carrie. Asshole, Tommy said. Alice and everyone else gasped in surprise by Tommy as she and everyone else turned around to look at Tommy. Did you say something? Mr. Ulmann asked tommy.
I said, awesome, Tommy responded. I just thought what Carrie read was awesome, Tommy added. Didn't you, Mr. Ulmann?, Tommy asked. Carrie walked back to her seat and desk and sat down. Alright, who's next? Mr. Ulmann asked. Nicki, I mean, Lizzy, Mr. Ulmann said. Once Lizzy was done reading her favorite poem and everyone else had read their favorite poem, Alice was the last one who had to read her favorite poem called " On the seashore" by Rabindranath Tagore. Alice got up and walked up to the front of the class and opened up her book and began reading out loud.
" On the seashore of endless worlds children meet. The infinite sky is motionless overhead and the restless water is boisterous. On the seashore of endless worlds the children meet with shouts and dance. They build their houses with sand, and they play with empty shells. With withered leaves they weave their boats and smilingly float them on the vast deep. Children have their play on the seashore of worlds. They know not how to swim, they know not how to cast nets. Pearl-fishers dive for pearls, merchants sail in their ships, while children gather pebbles and scatter them again. They know not how to cast nets. The sea surges up with laughter, and pale gleams the smile of the sea-beach. Death-dealing waves sing meaningless ballads to the children, even like a mother while rocking her baby's cradle. The sea plays with children, and pale gleams the smile of the sea-beach. On the seashore of endless worlds children meet. Tempest roams in the pathless sky, ships are wrecked in the trackless water, death is abroad and children play. On the seashore of endless worlds is the great meting of the children"
Alice finished reading and sat back down at her desk after she had nothing else to say, while not knowing Carrie watched and listened as Alice read the entire poem, with a smile on her face the whole time.
