March 12, 2016 1:30 p.m.
The buzzer shrieked, signaling the start of the second half of the game. But this wasn't any ordinary game.
This was for the state championship.
The scoreboard showed us up by seven points, and we should have been satisfied with that spread. Only we were playing against the Parkway Griffins, and it was widely known that they didn't get this far this season by their ability.
These assholes liked to cheat. When that didn't work, they would foul like crazy. Good thing Parkway had a bench of almost fifteen deep because, by the end of the final buzzer, they would have used them all up.
The referee's shrill whistle sounded, and everyone on the court stopped running toward the other end. I turned, spotting my best friend, Kyle Ryan lying on the hardwood with his arms tucking the basketball close to his body. From my guesstimate, the opposing team's guard must have fumbled the ball while dribbling and Kyle gained control by throwing himself on top of it.
Parkway's center, a beast by the name of Shawn, strode in Kyle's direction and made the mistake of kicking his back. I saw my best friend stiffen and the jerk that hit him turned to his teammates and smirked. When he faced the referee though, he tried portraying a different story.
"It was an accident, I swear," Shawn said with his hands raised. The ref was shaking his head at the player and was already in the midst of walking toward the scorekeeper to report what the prick had done.
Dylan Starsky helped Kyle to stand, so I took it upon myself to help in a different way.
I stood beside Shawn, number sixteen and nudged his arm. "You pull that bullshit again, and I'll make sure they're taking you out of here on a stretcher."
"Whatever, Birch." Shawn twisted away, and I grabbed him by the shoulder.
"Try me, and we'll see what happens," I growled, and he forced a huff before stomping toward his team's bench.
"Let's go Knights. Let's go!" the crowd in the stands collectively chanted, prompted by the cheerleaders.
After hurrying back to my teammates, Coach Larson started, "Obviously, things are only going to get worse from here." The coach's dark eyes scanned the five of us, almost warning us of what was to come. "They haven't lost one game this year, and I guess we know why."
Owen forced a cough, followed by a loud, "cheaters." From where I stood, it gave me the distinct advantage of seeing most of the players from the opposing team. Shawn and another scrawny player with the name Stewart on his jersey turned in our direction.
"He's talking about you," I mouthed while pointing to Owen. Shawn shook his head and flipped me off while the other kid seemed to act oblivious.
I laughed to myself as Coach kept yammering. The murmurings from the crowd kept getting louder. It was understandable considering a lot was riding on this game. Two rows of cheerleaders stood before our side's bleachers, performing some cheer I'd heard a thousand times before to get everyone pumped. My attention jumped from each set of pom poms until I found the only one I cared to see.
And no it wasn't my girlfriend, Katlyn Seevers. Even though she smiled and gave me a slight wave, I acted like I didn't notice her. My gaze skipped past her and landed on the tallest girl on the squad. She had her strawberry blond hair girl in a ponytail fastened by some cute blue and gold cheer bow that made her look like she was twelve. Surely, I'd have to give her shit about it the next time I had the chance.
I couldn't help but smile as she turned to face the court after they finished their cheer. But she always had that affect on me, even if she didn't know it. She sensed me watching and smirked once her green-eyed gaze met mine. I winked, causing her to roll her eyes in retaliation. She must have assumed I was just messing with her as usual.
That girl. She had no idea.
"Ahh. Well." Kyle patted my shoulder and nodded toward his twin sister. She shook her head at him, proving she was in prime fighting form today for some reason. "How about we up the value of these free throws, huh?"
I cocked an eyebrow at my best friend. He loved to bet on anything, ranging from the outcomes of games to just how many slices of pizza Owen could devour in a single sitting. Fourteen was the highest count.
The ref passed Kyle the ball, and he dribbled it a couple of times as the announcer called out, "Parkway, foul. Against number sixteen."
I walked with everyone else to line up around the key. "And what would you propose for this one?"
Kyle stood at the top. I should have known by the devilish glint in his hazel eyes that I wasn't going to like what he was about to suggest. But that was part of the game. If he put it out there as a bet, none of us, including me, ever backed down. And he knew it.
"Simple." He held the ball to position himself before the ref would walk over. Mason and Luke took their spots as a two of the opposing team's members were walking toward us. "If I make both of these baskets, you have to finally man up and tell Shelby how you feel about her."
Mason and Luke both snickered and I shot them a look. A what the hell look. Shelby had a boyfriend. A prick by the name of Connor that seriously didn't appreciate how wonderful she was. Because if he did, he would have never cheated on her with Lindsay Matthews.
And Shelby, as oblivious as ever, had no idea.
Also, I had a girlfriend. Even though she was leaving and I planned on breaking up with her before then. But still. What was his logic to all this?
I glared at Kyle. "What are you...?"
He forced a laugh and shook the sweat from his blond hair. "Seriously? You're going to try and deny it?"
"Deny what?" Owen asked as he finally joined us. Asshole was always late for everything. His eyes followed mine and caught Kyle's. "What are we betting on now?"
"I think we need a side bet," Mason added and Luke nodded to agree. Shitheads. Where was their loyalty?
"I think so too," Kyle said as he kept staring at me. "So first things first. Are you going to tell my sister how you feel about her or not?"
Now I never blushed or whatever the hell girls did when they were embarrassed. This was a first. Only I wasn't claiming it as a good thing, rather me fuming that Kyle, my best friend since second grade, would call me out like this. Here. In front of everyone else.
"And tell her what?" I said, hoping it would work as a well enough cover. Acting indifferent was essential to this plan.
Kyle grinned, and I knew he didn't believe me. "Tell her you like her. Tell Shelby that you've been in love with her since whatever." He threw his free hand up in the air. "Just tell her, please."
I choked. Love? Did Kyle just freaking say that I was in love with his sister? In front of the others? What the f*** was wrong with him?
"Please," Luke muttered, and I reached over to hit his arm. What the hell? This was a freaking mutiny in the making.
I looked at Shelby again as she stood with her poms at her sides. This was my own personal bet. If I smiled and she smiled in return, I'd agree.
Here goes nothing.
I gave her my best smile. The one that all the girls loved. At least that's what they told me. Shelby looked around, seeing who had my focus. Once she realized it was her, she blushed and glanced away.
And damn it, she was smiling.
"Fine," I said and didn't glance up to see that satisfied expression on Kyle's face. The combined murmuring of my teammates served as enough hazing.
The other team joined us, and I hoped that meant the discussion was over. At least for now.
"And the second bet?" Mason asked, and he was damn lucky the ref stood right behind me. If not, I would have throttled him right here on the spot.
The referee sounded his whistle again, and Kyle raised his arm with the basketball in hand. "If I make both baskets without touching the backboard, he has to tell her tonight."
Ah shit. I was screwed. Kyle just so happened to be the best free-throw shooter on the team. Considering he was the subject of most the fouls, he'd have to be.
I groaned loudly as Shawn took his spot beside me in the first position to defend the basket. "Tell her, who? Tonight?"
We all ignored him as Kyle bent over to bounce the ball once before checking his aim.
"I know who I'd like to tell something to all night long." Shawn nudged my arm like we were buddies and pointed to the one person that was definitely off limits.
My jaw locked, and I glared right at him. "Shut up. Right now," I seethed.
Kyle looked at Shawn, and then me. By my I'm going to kill him expression, he must have realized who Shawn meant. "Hey, asshole. That's my sister you're talking about." He aimed the ball and shot. It made a distinctive swoosh as the ball only came in contact with the net. One down. One to go.
Everyone was clapping and cheering while I, wished that my best friend missed the next one. The ball after traveling through the net found its way back to Kyle. He aimed again, but not before looking at me with that smug ass smile of his.
I closed my eyes, in anticipation and didn't hear the ball tap the backboard as another swoosh filled my ears. The asshole did it. The whole crowd roared as Kyle hurried to my side. The other players all headed for their positions down the court.
"Tonight. I mean it, or I'll make sure to bring up this little bet in front of her," Kyle said and handed the ref the ball for the other team to take possession.
I grinned, hiding my anxiousness at what I had to do. My gaze found Shelby briefly before I said, "I always follow through, don't I?"
Kyle forced a laugh and started jogging backward. "Why do you think I made the bet?" And with that, he raised his eyebrows and turned before I had the chance to catch up to him.
Tonight. I'd tell Shelby tonight.
