Side Story #3 In The Cards

It had been a week since the little voice in your head had spoken to you. It felt like an entire section of your brain had been cut off; you had been so used to sharing it with someone you forgot how it was to be on your own. Often times you would discover something and be so excited to tell Katsuki, but then you remembered his absence and your enthusiasm all came crashing down.

Wasn't this what you wanted? Since day one didn't you want to get rid of the demon?

Mina noticed how quiet you had been and eventually pried on what was going on. You tried your best to sound neutral since any other way you'd sound like you'd miss him. And for some reason you felt the need to hide that.

"Wow! That's great news! You're free, girl!" Mina whooped ecstatically. "I've got even better news! And from a source I know you have to trust!"

"I know you said Bakugou's gone and all but he can actually come back to your body if you leave it open like that. You have to expel the door from yourself so you can be protected from other demons who may try to break in."

"And where did you learn this?" You questioned.

"I asked the most reliable source on this planet," Mina hummed proudly. "Miss Wiki."

Your eyes widened at the mention of that name. "You asked Miss Miyumi and demon shit? Mina!"

"Whatever! Like she hasn't answered weirder questions in the past."

You shook your head. "Oh my god..."

"So anyway the procedure for cleansing your body is a bunch of home ingredients and a couple of plants we can easily get," Mina continued. "Then we just need to rescind Bakugou's name from your being and presto no more demons!"

"It won't work," You announced. "Bakugou's name isn't 'Bakugou'. He made it up so we'd have something to call him."

"WHAT? But we need his demon name!"

"He would have never told us." You felt bad for lying to your best friend but something inside of you was rejecting her idea. It was lonely enough now that you were subjected to constant isolation, just thinking about it being permanent without him made your lungs feel choked for air.

Mina dropped her topic after that. Things returned to their average everyday fair and soon came the day of the party Momo was hosting. You were thinking of not attending because you didn't feel up to it, but you gathered what little enthusiasm you had for the pinkette's sake. She had been anticipating this event all week and you knew she would only pester you for not going.

"Glad you girls could make it!" Momo greeted on your arrival. "Drinks are in the kitchen! If you need anything let me know!"

"Why don't you go find Todoroki! I'm sure he's here somewhere," Mina said as she hurried you two through the enormous house.

"I don't know, last I spoke with him he said he may not be able to make it."

"No harm in trying!"

"Mina!"

"What?" She shrugged, pulling you two into the kitchen. She swung the fridge door open and found what she was looking for. "Here, this will help you liven up."

"God, you know I'm a total lightweight," You whined but she snapped the cap off the bottle of beer and handed it to you. "Which means you'll get into the spirit of things quicker!" She grinned.

You sighed and took a swig of the bitter liquid. You didn't like to drink much but perhaps this was what you needed. A night out to forget for a little and just have fun.

You stared at the glass bottle for a moment before throwing it back. Mina watched wide eyed as the bubbly liquid disappeared down your throat. You let out a loud cough and clanked the bottle onto the kitchen counter.

"Fuck it. Let's do this."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You felt like you had walked around the mansion for the billionth time and each time around you took another bottle of booze with you. Bodies clustered and pulsed around you to the blaring music as you stumbled through them looking for your friend. It had been hours since you had seen her and you were still trying to find her. Not like you had anything else to do anyway.
You thought the alcohol would soothe your tumultuous spirits but they only served to worsen the experience. You felt like you couldn't breathe as you pushed through the sea of people as fast as you could. You then sped up the staircase into one of the bathrooms and collapsed near the toilet. As soon as you reared your head over the porcelain a storm of fluids rose up from your throat.
Once your stomach settled again you coughed and wiped your mouth clean with some toilet paper. Your trembling arms lifted you up from the floor and brought you face-to-face with the girl in the mirror.
Her hair was a mess of tangles and her makeup was fading from the sweat dripping down her brow. Even her clothes appeared wrinkled and pungent.
You sighed, splashing water on your face and swishing it in your mouth. Why were you there? How did you get there? You were miserable and wanted to be alone despite everyone not speaking to you anyway. Actually, that was a lie. You didn't want to be alone. You missed the person who would be scolding you for getting so wasted you were vomiting in a dirty bathroom. You longed for the snarky retorts of the male who challenged your thinking and often defended you when you couldn't.
But he was gone.
And you were all that was left.
You ungracefully clambered to the door and threw it open just as someone had reached for the knob. You were muttering an apology when they questioned, "(l/n)?"
You looked up perplexed to see a familiar set blue and brown eyes. "Todoroki?"
"Are you okay?" He watched you carefully, afraid that you would tip you over at any moment.
"I..." Something made you hesitate before frowning and responding. "I don't know anymore. I think I'm lost." It felt like it all clicked when you said that word. All the isolation and sorrow you felt these past few days made sense in that single word. But you knew that things wouldn't go so well if you let it seem like something was wrong so instead you gestured towards the house. "It's a maze in there."
"I know what you mean," Todoroki huffed out a laugh. "I just got here and already lost where I came in."
"It's pretty late to be barely arriving."
"Yeah, I know, but you invited me so I wanted to at least make an appearance," He shrugged. Just then a group of guys ran past you so fast they frazzled you both up. They were throwing around a football whooping and hollering. Todoroki gave them a disapproving stare and focused back on you. "Do you want to sit down?"
You nodded and took a seat on the staircase seeing as it was the only open space available. The red-white haired male sat beside you. "So are you having fun so far?" He asked.
You sighed, shaking your head. "I've certainly tried, but the booze is failing me."
"Well, you don't need alcohol to have a good time," Todoroki suggested.
"Yeah but it's the only thing that's turning off my brain. The only downside is that my emotions replace it."
"And what have you got hiding in that brain of yours?" The male lightly tapped your head with soft smile.
You pause for a moment and then waved for him to come closer. When he did you whispered in his ear, "Can you keep a secret?"
He glanced at you curiously, but nodded. "So, I have this thing right? I guess you can call him my friend, I don't know I didn't ask. But anyway he's like a total asshole and was always butting into my life, but now he's gone forever and it's quiet again. Like I finally experienced being alone with my thoughts after so long and I kinda hate it? I miss him but I don't wanna say that 'cause it sounds weird. He was so unpredictable and strong and outspoken. He was everything I wasn't. He made me, I don't know, want to be like that. He gave me a courage I didn't think I had in me."
You felt your eyes welling up. "I don't know...god I feel so stupid. How can I miss that demon?"
You hid your face in your hands as Todoroki regarded you with empathetically. "Even if he is brash it seems like you really like this guy. You miss him and that's ok." He squeezed your shoulder. "Sometimes even the oddest contrivances can give us the happiest endings. Maybe you should talk to him. All hope can't be completely lost right?"
You sniffled as you wiped tears from your cheeks. "You sure about that? And what if he doesn't even feel that same way?"
"You won't know until you ask right?" Todoroki rose to his feet and helped you do the same. "What you need is to put down the bottle and reach out to him. You should head home and do that."
"I came here with Mina though I can't leave her—"
"Okay then would you like me to help you find her?"
You were teary eyed as you bit your lip and nodded. "Please. I don't want to desert her here." He nodded and started down the steps.
But as soon as your foot bent to follow you heard the group boys from earlier shouting louder behind you. You then felt a solid body crash into your back, easily toppling you over. Your mind was too muddled to scream as you fell face forwards down the staircase. After the first tumble the rest were a whirlwind of a world spinning and slamming into you. Each hit was a harsh slash against your tender skin until your jaw rammed into edge of a step and—
SNAP
Todoroki's eyes widened in horror as your body rolled to a halt at the base of the stairs.
"(L/N)!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You couldn't open your eyes right away. Your head was throbbing so viciously you could feel it in your eyeballs. But when you did you weren't quite sure if you had. The room was pitch black, nothing but a void filled your vision. Even as you sat up you could see nothing.

Your hands felt a ground beneath you so tried standing up. But as soon as something reached out from the darkness and wrapped around your wrists. You yelped in surprise, tugging at the force but it would not budge. Your heart beat rapidly in your chest and you saw a strange white light beginning to emanate from you. This seemed to activate the tendrils around you because all of sudden dozens of inky black arms clawed at you, yanking you back down.

You shrieked, fighting against the mass but to no avail. You felt your feet begin to sink into the ground and lose sensation.

You had no idea what was going on. It had to be a nightmare. Right?

As much as you tried to convince yourself you would wake up any minute now in the back of your mind something told you that wasn't going to happen. Fear pounded in your chest as your legs began to numb. It was like being submerged in ice water.

You screamed in terror, begging for the dream to end. "P-please..." You grit your teeth.

The light from your body started to fade in blinks the further the darkness pulled you. You were sure this was the end and yet you still held hope.

You muster all the air in your lungs as you shouted one word.

"Katsuki!"

It took a moment but all at once the floor around your began to shake. The ink enveloping you spat you out and the tendrils that had captured you slinked back into the darkness. You lay exhausted as everything around you trembled violently.

There was a loud crack that split the void, a dark light shining through it. You watched as something tore the wall apart until there was a giant hole. A figure loomed in the way, a wall of fire burning behind them.

The shadow moved inside until it towered over your still body. They bent down and turned your face to the light.

Your breath caught when you locked eyes with a pair of ruby irises.

"(y/n)!?" He gasped, recognizing you instantly.

"Katsuki..." Your reply was weak but the demon wasted no time in scooping his arms underneath you and carrying you out of the dark room. Once out the heat of the fire you had seen hit you like a truck. It was suffocating but you could still breathe the thin air.

"What the hell are you doing here?" He hissed when setting you down against a large rock. He sounded angry but the expression on his face told you differently.

"I don't know...where am I?" You asked.

"You're in hell, glow stick."

You frowned and glanced around wildly. "A-are you serious? Am I still dreaming?"

"This ain't a dream, dipshit, this is reality. What the fuck are you doing here?" He urged again.

"I don't know! How should I know?" Your energy was returning to you now though not at full stamina. You were rubbing your eyes trying to wake up from your hallucination.

"The only way you could be here is if..." Katsuki trailed off. He then grabbed your arm and you found that there were strange symbols and markings etched into your skin like a tattoo.

You were still trying to collect your thoughts when Katsuki glanced at you annoyed. "You died, you dumbass."

"What? How? I—" It all suddenly came back to you. The party, Todoroki, being shoved, and then... "Oh my god....I'm dead!?" You exclaimed.

"I leave you alone for a while and you go and kill yourself," Katsuki sighed. "You either really missed me or you're incredibly stupid."

"I was pushed!"

His eyes narrowed. "Who the hell would want to kill you?"

"It was an accident. I was at a party and when I decided to leave some idiots playing football indoors bumped into me and I fell," You explained, irritated.

"Figures," Katsuki exhaled. "I can go and drag them down here too if you'd like."

"No! I...I....I don't know what the fuck is going on!" You yelled in frustration. "One minute I'm drunk at a party, the next I wake up in a black room and run into you! How did I even get here!? And I thought you had gone to do important things!"

Katsuki was just as perplexed. "Well I sure as fuck didn't expect you down here. And I am doing things!"

"Like what?" You countered, steadily rising to your feet.

"Things!"

"As far as I see you're just hanging out in hell!" You shouted back. "Tell me this did you leave because you wanted to or because you had to?"

Katsuki, in full horns and flames, towered over you but not a single sliver a fear entered your body. Your fury matched his own as he stepped forward. "I had to, idiot!"

"Why?"

"Why?" He laughed dryly. "Why? Because I'm a demon, (y/n). I don't belong up there just as much as you don't belong down here. I couldn't stay and live there like a human would."

"What if you could?" You pried, your heart feeling heavy with emotion. "Would you have stayed? Or was I just another body to possess?" You made it sound like you two were previously in some kind of arrangement but that was how you honestly felt. These were all the thoughts that had been plaguing your mind since the day he up and vanished.

Katsuki looked taken aback because you seemed to have struck a chord. His expression muddled and a tight grimace melted onto his lips. "I...why are you asking that?"

"Because I want to know!" Your vision began to blur (as much as you hated showing vulnerability). "For the past week I've been feeling like a dumbass for missing you! You! The insufferable, wild, vibrant, handsome jackass!" You jabbed your finger into his chest while tears began to stream down your face. "I've tried everything to get you out of my head! I threw myself into my schoolwork, I tried joining some school clubs, I even drove myself to drink just to forget! But I can't move on...and I don't know why! All I know is that you're the cause of it all."

You sucked in a ragged breath and shook your head. "I don't know what to do. And to hear you say that you left because you wanted to makes my stomach hurt. I can't believe I—"

You were cut short as Katsuki suddenly closed the gap between you two. His arms wrapped around you, squeezing you hard against his chest. The smell of smoke and sugar wafted into your nose.

Your tears watered over as the comfort you craved finally enveloped you. You wanted to push him away and say it wasn't that simple but you couldn't help yourself. Your arms grasped him back and you buried your head in his shoulder tears staining his bare skin.

"Fuck you, I hate you," You mumbled in between sobs.

"You're really gonna tell me that after your little speech just now?" Katsuki retorted, still not letting you go. "I didn't want to leave, glow stick. That was the problem. I do have responsibilities here in hell but I was ditching them for you, idiot."

"I got caught and I had to come back. I...I'm sorry I did that to you," Katsuki muttered softly. "I didn't know you cared so much. I didn't know you felt the same way."

You wiped away you wet eyes and glanced up the demon. "So, you...? Are you saying you...like me too?"

"Yes, you thick-headed numbskull. I like you. If I didn't I wouldn't be here right now and you'd have been swallowed by those hungry souls."

You let out a breathy chuckled. "So all it took for us to admit that was for me to die and go to hell?"

"Makes sense. You are pretty dramatic," Katsuki quipped.

"Says the one who popped all the popcorn at a store when they didn't get a bag of hot cheetos."

"That was in the beginning when I barely knew you that doesn't count!"

You cupped his face in your hands and silenced him with your thumbs. "Shut up, you drama king." He rolled his eyes and brought your hips closer to his. A smirky smile spread across his face as he leaned down.

You closed your eyes as you felt his hot breath coming closer and closer to your eager lips and—

"AHem."

Katsuki groaned impatiently. He whipped his head around to the sound and found the crow demon standing there at a distance. "You really do pick the worst times, don't you Tokoyami?"

"Mere coincidence, Your Highness," the crow replied nonchalant. "Who's this?"

"(l/n), (y/n), uh, nice to meet you," You waved, but then whispered. "Did he just call you 'Your Highness'?"

"Yeah, and if you're gonna be with me you better get used to it too," Katsuki smiled knowingly at you. Your eyes went wide with realization. "You're not serious, are you?"

"Of course I am," He scoffed. "After all, every king needs a queen."

Miss Daniels sat in her office typing away at her desk when a silvery white portal appeared in the room. Out of the mist plopped out Miss Miyumi looking cheery as ever.

"Hello, sugarplum, how did things go?" The dark skinned woman asked.

"Great as always," She grinned. "Although something strange did happen."

"What's that?"

"Do you recall the student (l/n) (y/n)?"

"Of course I do. She's been attending sessions with me and you. Why?" Miss Daniels inquired curiously.

"I saw her today along with a few other students from here!"

"Yes, but that's bound to happen when you're crossing alternate realities right?"

"That wasn't the odd part," Miss Miyumi continued. "It was what one of her little friends asked me."

"Do tell."

"She gave me this hypothetical about a demon named Bakugou and if he were to possess her friend how would she get rid of them."

"Right..."

"Well in that reality demon exorcism are handled verbally but the only way to completely expel the evil is to recite the demon's name."

"Uh huh..."

"So I stuck around to see how things would turn out and at first I thought she managed to succeed because (l/n) was looking less pale than before," Miyumi explained. "But she seemed upset, borderline depressed even."

"I know I'm not to interfere with timelines so I left it be, but right when I was about to come back here I heard young (l/n) had passed away."

Daniels blinked in surprise. "Really?"

"Yes! But despite hearing the sad news I have this feeling deep down that she isn't truly gone in that reality," Miyumi sighed. "I'm almost certain that she's actually happier wherever she is now."

"And why are you so concerned about this?"

"I have hunch that something with that Bakugou boy is in little (l/n)'s cards. It feels like every reality I visit they're connected somehow. Although in that reality it wasn't the best outcome."

Miss Daniels shook her head and exhaled deeply. "Oh honey, don't start with your shipper heart."

"I'm not positive but I can sense it, Eleni, I swear!"

The cool woman rolled her eyes playfully and returned to her desk work. "Oh dear..."

I know, I'm like two days late but hopefully the fact that these are three really long chapters makes up for it ^^ I hope you all enjoy and Happy Belated Halloween!
