Light at the End
"Are you (l/n) (y/n)?"
"That's me," You replied warily. "Is there something wrong?"
"I came to retrieve you and Monoma here," the woman explained. "You two are due for counseling."
Bakugou raised an eyebrow. "Counseling?"
You ignored the blond and sighed. "Right now?"
"Yes, if you would please join us?" she smiled sweetly and gestured next to her. "Your attendance is very important."
You inwardly groaned as you grabbed your belongings. Katsuki, however, was staring at you incredulously. "What the fuck is going on?" He whispered.
"I'll tell you later."
You slung your bag over your shoulder and climbed out of the lunch table, leaving behind your uneaten food. The dark haired woman clapped her hands together enthusiastically and grinned. "Right then, off we go!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monoma actively denied your existence as you both followed the lady down the corridors. Since it was lunch time for most classes the hallways were silent with only the soft hum of lectures taking places within classrooms.
You cleared your throat, breaking the quiet atmosphere. "So, um, Miss...?"
"Oh how forgetful of me! I'm Miss Miyumi," she giggled to herself. "Honestly, I'm awful at keeping track of where I am. I thought I had already introduced myself to you two!"
You had no idea what she was talking about but she seemed nice. She had a sort of innocent vibe to her that made you question whether she was a teacher or a student. She was older than you and Monoma that's for sure, but her short stature and her bubbly personality contradicted with her professional title.
Miss Miyumi seemed to have a pep in her step as her heels clicked on the tile. Her long flowered skirt swayed with her as she hugged a couple of folders to her soft, white blouse. She wore her shiny, black hair straight and neatly ending at her shoulders. The way she presented herself and her attitude brought you hope that she would be a wonderful counselor.
"Here we are," Miyumi announced once you reached a tall metal door with an opaque glass window. There were golden words printed on the glass but you failed to read it as the teacher's figure blocked it.
Miyumi knocked on the door before turning the knob. "Hello? I've returned~," she greeted playfully. She allowed you and Monoma to step inside before shutting the door behind her.
At the desk a person sat on a giant leather office chair rifling through papers in their hands. Their back was turned to you, concealing their identity. "Thank you, darling. I sorely appreciate your assitance," the person replied kindly. They sounded feminine, and very sharp.
"Of course, dear! Anytime!" Miss Miyumi beamed and went to exit.
"Wait," Monoma finally spoke up. "Aren't you the counselor?"
You felt the mood change as the person at the desk stopped and gently put aside their paperwork. "Excuse me?"
The chair spun around to reveal a woman in a striking red suit. Her dark brown hair ran down her shoulder in a silky waterfall of braids. She rested her elbow on the desk, her fine red nails drumming dangerously. But perhaps the most outstanding of all her person was her fierce hazel eyes against her black skin. They pierced through you two with such a fire you thought you might be set ablaze.
A sarcastic smirk spread across her lips as she stared down the dirty blond. "I am your counselor."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Bakugou-kun!" A chipper voice woke him up from his rampant thoughts. He found that the voice belonged to none other but the round-faced girl from his class. "It's nice seeing that you and (l/n) are such good friends!"
He scoffed. "Why the hell do you care?"
"Well I think most of the class sees you as kind of blunt and pretty....expressive," the brunette chuckled nervously. "I guess this shows another side of you."
"What I believe Uraraka is trying to say is that (l/n) is a good influence on you," Iida joined in. Deku seemed to agree but knew better than to comment.
Mina, on the other hand, jabbed an elbow at him. "Looks like somebody was finally able to get under that rough exterior of yours!"
"What rough exterior!? I just tell you idiots how it is!" Bakugou barked back.
Kaminari shrugged. "Yeah, but you gotta admit you've got a soft spot for her."
Sero shook his head, taking in a spoonful of rice. "No way! Have you met this dude? He's treats everyone like shit, equally."
Kirishima looked unsure. "Eh, agree to disagree. I do think they're really good friends though."
"Yeah! You can tell (l/n) admires Bakugou-kun's spirit and determination! And what's not to admire?" Uraraka beamed cheerfully. "You're drive to become a hero almost rivals Deku's! I think people like that are what inspire others to become better too."
The ash blond shot an inquisitive glare at the girl but it was ineffective. In fact, most of his intimidation tactics seemed to bounce off this one.
But what she said made him ponder. Did you really look up to him? Most of the time you would laugh off his attempts at being confident and even went as far as to mimic him. Bakugou rolled his eyes. He was overthinking this, clearly pink cheeks had gotten it all wrong. Maybe she was just doing it to mess with him.
However, the childish grin on her face didn't seem to falter. Bakugou could sense that what the round faced girl was saying was her honest thoughts.
Instead of mulling over her words, he shook his head and shoveled down a mouthful of his lunch.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The moment you first laid eyes on the woman you knew she radiated that big dick energy. And you were absolutely having a riot over Monoma's flustered red face.
The counselor stared him down. "Is there a problem, Mr. Monoma?"
The male swallowed him embarrassment and grit teeth. "No."
"Good. Have a seat."
Miss Miyumi waved a curt goodbye as she left, leaving you two at the mercy of the femme fatale. Having taken in her authoritative demeanor you had no idea what to expect.
"Based on your reactions, I see you thought you would be under the guidance of someone like Miyumi or even our other counselor, Hound Dog," She drawled out with boredom as she set aside several files on her desk. "However, your special case lands in my hands seeing as how you—" She glanced at you. "Almost managed to kill this one. Although it wasn't without warrant because you—" She pointed at Monoma. "—had been demeaning her character and her worth."
"And all for what?" The woman sighed standing up and walking over to the window. "Because one class was getting more attention? Because a member of your class was being friendly to the other?"
Monoma opened his mouth to speak. "Excuse me, Miss..."
"Daniels."
"Miss Daniels," He nodded, putting on an air of politeness. "I know that what I did was wrong. I never meant for it to go as far as it did. You have to understand at the time I felt...distressed at having one of my own classmates side with people who are so egotistical. I admit I—"
"Mr. Monoma, are you excusing your behavior because your feelings?" Miss Daniels turned to him sharply. Your sentiments exactly.
"I, well I—"
"Let me give you a cold, hard fact, Mr. Monoma, nothing can excuse the actions you've displayed against your fellow classmate. There was and is no reason for you to torment Miss (l/n) the way you did and your type of conduct will never be tolerated at this school."
Her eyebrows lowered into a glower as she leaned over the desk, her hands firmly planted on the wooden surface. "So please, if you have any more useless information to share say it now." Monoma's calm expression quickly zipped up into a quiet rage.
Miss Daniels' eyes then narrowed on you. "And as for you. It is my understanding that you lost control of your quirk?"
"Ah, yes, but I had no idea I even had this quirk," You defended.
"Your circumstance is a little different. Still dire and incredibly unacceptable, but unpreventable nonetheless."
Monoma frowned. "Are you letting her off the hook?"
"No, although I'm curious as to what could have triggered this new quirk."
"Anger," You replied simply. "At him."
The counselor suddenly slinked around the desk and behind you two. "Now I've heard many accounts of that day, so I'd like to finally get your sides of the story. (l/n), what happened that afternoon?"
"Mindless chatter," You sighed in annoyance. "Then he had to go add to all the rumors which just pissed me off even more."
"Monoma, is this true?"
"I might have been a little abrasive," the blond said, crossing his arms. "But spreading rumors around was definitely not me."
You couldn't contain your anger any longer as you whipped around with a burning fury. "Oh no, you only incited everything and watched it all unfold!" You snapped back.
"And!? You're the one who went skulking around with those narcissistic asshats!"
"They aren't narcissistic, perhaps you'd know that if you got your head out of your ass every once in a while!"
Monoma's tame demeanor melted away to reveal his flared gaze. "Oh you're always taking their side, huh? I don't know whether they brainwashed you or you're just that much of an idiot!"
"You slander and demean them every chance you get, but tell me, when's the last time they ever showed any actions of conceit? When have you ever seen them 'bragging' about how they were attacked by villains? Huh? Name me one time!" You challenged, gripping the sides of your chair.
"They're smug," Monoma retorted. "But this isn't about that."
You exhaled, exasperated. "Then what's it about?"
"YOU'RE IN CLASS 1-B!"
His shout made you jump back in alarm. His expression, though angry, was on the verge of frustration. His eyes seem to run over every bewildered feature on your face. "You were in our class and we were all united in that one fact. We help each other when things get hard or stuff goes wrong," Monoma grit his teeth. "You may not have realized that but Ibara and Itsuka certainly wanted you to. Why do you think they were always sticking by you? Because they cared, and they wanted you to see that."
"I-I may have turned everyone against you, and I may have said some things I shouldn't have, but in some stupid, fucked up way it was because I cared too." The male's stormy grey eyes flicked up to yours. Never in your life did you think you'd see this kind of vulnerability coming from Monoma. "I was hurt that you'd choose them over us." He let out a breathy exhale, his fist clenched and trembling from holding back his emotions. "Over the people who would support you no matter what."
"I didn't choose them over you." You shook your head with a frown. "Making friends outside of my class isn't picking a side. Ibara and Itsuka will always mean the world to me, but they don't own me. I can become friends with whoever I want. It's not up to you to determine that."
"And it's childish of you to think that way," You said, a sharp bite at the end of your tone. "You aren't my parent, Monoma, I never disliked or hated Class 1-B, and you can absolutely go rot in a hole for what you did to me!"
You were going to stand when you finally noticed the firm hand on your shoulder. Not only yours but on Monoma's as well. The hand belonged to none other than Miss Daniels who was staring at you two with a slight smirk.
You raised an eyebrow. "What did you—"
"I'm a guidance counselor for a reason. My quirk influences emotions, which means if I want the truth out of you I will get it," She said as she removed herself. "It seems you two had a lot of baggage to sort out. Monoma, the one who doesn't like change, and (l/n), the free spirit that can't be locked up. At least we know the root of the problem now."
Monoma scoffed and crossed his arms, but you were still dumbfounded. "You orchestrated that whole thing?"
"Oh no, I simply set it in motion, but quite the spectacle wouldn't you say?" She grinned deliciously. "I believe we've reached our conclusion for today. We'll be meeting here twice a week so be ready for whenever you're called down."
She then dismissed you both for the rest of your lunch. You two were silent as you split ways and returned to your respective classes. Since you were still new you mostly kept to yourself with the occasional scribble of notes from whatever Aizawa was saying. Katsuki sat a seat ahead from you (Midoriya in between) and the others were too far right for you to even talk to. So you spent your class time staring out the window daydreaming about what you would do when you got home.
Eventually, the end of the day bell rang and all the zombified students rose from the dead.
You were surprised by Midoriya turning around, a sweet smile on his face. "So how did you like the class?"
"Pretty quiet, relatively normal," You shrugged as you compiled all your things into your bag. "Didn't expect much else. Although it seems Aizawa's teaching tactics are little more advanced."
"If you need anything I have notes on all the topics we've had so far, so don't hesitate to ask," He offered kindly before a dark entity shadowed over him. "She's not stupid, Deku. Why the hell would she need your stuff?"
Katsuki slung his backpack over his shoulder and glared at him. "Get lost, would you?"
"I-I wasn't trying to imply that, Kacchan—"
Your ears perked up at this and a devious grin spread across your lips. "Yeah, Kacchan, why don't you pull that stick out of your ass?"
Midoriya's eye went wide. "I didn't say that--"
"Watch it, princess," He barked back, his eyes flaring to life.
"What's the matter, Kacchan?" You toyed with him further, challenging that fiery red gaze. "I thought you'd appreciate me calling you by your unique nickname."
"(y/n)," He warned.
"Kacchan," You smirked from ear to ear. Katsuki looked about ready to blow up, but you laughed in his face and linked your arm with his. "Come on, you blond hedgehog, let's go home."
"WHAT."
You waved goodbye to Midoriya as he nervously smiled back. "I guess we'll see each other tomorrow. Thank you for everything!"
"Y-yeah, see you..."
It didn't take long for the rest to join you. Mina took your other arm in hers while Kaminari joined Bakugou on the other side. But the blond gave him a nasty scowl and shoved him away by the face.
"Where we goin', girl? Wanna head over to a convenience store and grab some snacks?" The pink girl suggested.
"Aw hell yeah, let's celebrate your transfer to 1-A!" Sero also joined in.
You wore a wary smile. "I don't know guys. I feel like I've had a long day today."
"Can't you idiots chill the fuck out for like a second?" Katsuki said gruffly as you all exited the room. "Besides can't you see she's not interested?"
"(y/n), you're gonna love 1-a! The class is really fun and we have some pretty strong people in it too," Ejirou grinned.
"Aside from you, of course," Kaminari added. "You almost wrecked that dude."
Your content expression soured upon hearing that. The last thing you wanted to be known for was the girl that almost killed her classmate. Everyone else noticed this too and smacked the sparkplug on the back of the head.
"You numbskull," Katsuki growled.
"Nice, Kaminari," Mina rolled her eyes with a sigh of frustration.
"What? I meant it as a compliment. I can't compliment her?"
"Sorry, guys, but I think I have other plans," You frowned tiredly as you spotted two familiar figures. Miss Miyumi grinning and waving at you while next to her was Monoma looking absolutely miserable.
"Again?" Sero asked.
"Looks like it." You swiveled around to face them, plastering on a smile. "We'll have plenty of time to celebrate now that I'm in 1-a. I'll see you guys later."
You were about to leave when a hand tugged your arm. "(y/n)." Katsuki glanced at you and then up at the two in the hallway. "You gonna be okay?"
"Yeah, don't wait up for me. Go on home," You reassured him. He didn't seem convinced, but he let you go nonetheless. "I'll catch you later, guys. Take care!" You gave your goodbyes and maneuvered around the throng of students to where the teacher awaited you.
His expression didn't show it, but Bakugou hoped you would manage through this time with that copycat douchebag.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once under the wing of Miss Miyumi you found out that she had literally nothing planned for that afternoon.
"Though you're serving detention I find the regular method of sitting in an empty classroom doing nothing is not helping your reeducation," Miyumi said as you three entered the nearly deserted library. "Usually I'd have you accompany me on a task but I have none at the moment." She rounded one of the tables midst the shelves of books. A top it were enormous stacks of loose papers and folders which held an unpromising future. "The librarian has their hands full right now, so I thought I'd have you two work together to arrange some these files."
After a quick instruction on how to order them, she realized she had forgotten a couple items in her office. She promised to return quickly as she shuffled out of the room leaving you with a grumbling Monoma.
You two worked silently, doing your best to avoid each other. You gathered your piles and neatly sorted them into their respective bindings. There was the occasional times when the papers either of you needed would end up on each sides and you would have to reach over and grab it. Even then your mouth locked like a steel trap.
You were slipping sealed documents into a folder when Monoma surprised you by pulling you out of your thoughts. "That one's mine."
You halted at the breaking of the silence but swiftly picked up one of the envelops you had put away. He was right. The wax seal over it was a roaring lion, not the intricate star you were supposed to be collecting.
Without a word you handed it to him and went right back to work.
You again were making your deep descent into thought when an annoyed sigh made your ears perk up. "Really? So you're not going to talk to me this entire time?"
Your eyebrows furrowed as you shot up to look at him. "No, no I'm not."
Monoma rolled his eyes. "Come on, (l/n), I apologized didn't I?"
"No, not once did I hear the word 'sorry' come out of your mouth this afternoon." You grit your teeth. "And even if you had, I still wouldn't have anything to say to you."
"So what, you're just going to stay mad at me?"
"That's the plan," You remarked, shoveling papers into binders a lot more aggressively.
"Are you serious?" Monoma asked, baffled. "I know I said some stupid shit, but are you that petty to hang onto for the rest of your life?"
Upon hearing his statement, your eyes went wide with disbelieving anger. "Are you kidding me?" You seethed, whipping around to face him. "Because of the little stunt you pulled I was harassed by my own classmates, humiliated in front of a bunch of people, and degraded by you! You had the audacity to speak ill about my mother and yet you want me to forgive you? No. You're an idiot for even considering that."
You hauled a huge stack of books and folders onto a wheeling cart and lividly glared at him. Your eyes fell on the brace around his neck. "My only regret is not finishing what I started."
You shoved the cart forward towards the bookshelves, gripping the sides of metal and leaving Monoma stunned were he stood.
You were still fuming with rage as you slammed the organized documents into place. How dare he? That stuck up, self righteous...! You wanted to scream, or punch him, or both. However, any move like that would probably double your punishment, or worse you'd be expelled.
One by one the folders disappeared from your inventory but your anger was still blazing strong. You didn't want to go back. You couldn't. You knew if you did someone would be getting their teeth kicked in.
Your chest was beating hard as you tried to relax your clenched fists. Your anxiety and stress seemed to be spiraling down onto you when you recalled a certain hideaway nearby. Wasting no time you snaked around the bookshelves till you spotted the distinct crevice from before.
You told yourself you would go back once you cooled off here since Miss Miyumi would probably be back soon (although she had been gone a while). However, once you slid between the wall and the bookshelf you were startled by someone already being there.
You gasped loudly as your heart leapt to your throat. "Jesus, you scared me!"
Though you were alarmed by the sudden presence your brain was quick to remember the face associated to them. "Shinsou?"
The male's somber gaze faded into one of surprise at recognizing you too. "(l/n)?"
"What are you doing here?"
"I could ask you the same thing," he replied. He was sitting on the floor with a book in his hands as he leaned against a bookshelf.
Your fury vanished steadily at being greeted by a well-known person. "I...I came here to be alone. I didn't know anyone else knew about this place."
"Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not leaving."
"No, no you don't have to. I was just shocked is all," You said, taking a seat across from him. "I'm sorry if I interrupted you. What are you reading?" You gestured to his book. "
Shinsou tucked away a bookmark as he shut the book closed. "1984."
"For class or for pleasure?"
"Pleasure." A small smile on his lips. "I don't read class books unless they sound interesting. Otherwise I'm paying a visit to sparknotes."
His expression deepened, looking at you with curiosity. "So what about you? What brought you down here? Last I saw you you were on the brink of tears."
You bit your lip and groaned. "Yeah, not my finest hour."
"Did something happen?"
You opened your mouth to speak but found it difficult to form words. Your situation was so muddled and convoluted to just outright explain. To begin with you were bullied into a corner, then you lashed out and almost killed a kid, and now you were sentenced to so many forms of punishment that you could barely keep up with any of them. And who knew for how long you'd have to endure those. But perhaps you could simplify one of these many debacles to him. Besides, he seemed trustworthy and it was possible the entire school knew your whole story by now anyways.
"I...kinda almost beat this kid to a pulp and now I'm stuck in detention with him. He's obnoxious and arrogant and I was genuinely concerned I would strangle him again," You blurted out.
Shinsou was, as anyone would be, in disbelief by your statement. So much so that it took him a while to gather his thoughts all the while looking vigorously confused. "Uh...that's um, not normal."
"Yeah..."
"Wait, you wouldn't be involved with that whole thing that's going around school, would you?" He inquired.
"What's going around?"
"Rumors about a student almost offing someone in broad daylight."
You uttered a heavy sigh. "Yeah, that might be me."
Shinsou shook his head in awe. "Whoa...why though?"
"I don't know," Your shrugged, fiddling with your fingers. "It's not like I did it on purpose. I don't even remember what happened....You know that day when you helped me with the desk?"
"Yeah."
"That guy was the reason that happened," You explained. "He wanted to pressure me into, I don't know, staying in my lane? He took things to far the day of practice and I guess it somehow activated my quirk."
"I see..." He nodded. "Well, I'd say that's a fucked up situation, but I'm kinda glad you stood up for yourself."
"Really?" You pursed your lips with a frown. "It dug me in a deeper hole than I was in originally. And now I must seem like a freak to everyone."
"You shouldn't have to endure that though. Maybe it wasn't the best way to go about it but punishments end right?" He reasoned, folding his arms. "And yeah there has been talk around school. If it's any consolation I never delved deep into the rumors. Meeting and talking to you has assured me that you're a good person and everyone can be full of shit."
His comfort brought a warm smile to you. "I really appreciate that. Thank you."
"You'll be okay." A brief grin spread across his face as he gently knocked his shoe into yours.
Suddenly, the sound of muffled whispers could be heard passing by the bookshelf behind Shinsou. You crept over to the line of books beside the male as he turned and did the same. From the cracks you could see Miss Miyumi speaking to an irritated Monoma who was saying something you couldn't quite hear.
"They must be looking for me. Crap, I didn't realize I had been gone away that long," You cursed under your breath.
"Well, as far as they know you're still in the library, right? You should be fine."
You nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I stormed off on Monoma to go put away some files. I'll just say I was having trouble organizing them or something."
You glanced over at Shinsou but noticed too late that you were a very few inches apart. His lavender eyes bore into yours making your cheeks feel warmer than they were up until a few seconds ago. Even the male was a little taken aback by the distance because his face gave away a slight pinkness. You could feel his fingertips grazing your own from where you touched the carpeted ground.
You mentally jostled your mind out of its freeze and pulled away shyly. "Ah, sorry."
"It's alright..." Shinsou tried to smile away his embarrassment.
"I'd better go then," You excused yourself, your chest filled with a strange fluttering sensation. "I'll catch you around?"
"Yeah, definitely," He chuckled softly. "You know where to find me."
You gave him giant beam, one that you hadn't been able to muster in a while. A genuine one. "Right, well it was nice talking again. I'll see you later, Shinsou."
"Goodbye, (l/n)."
And with that you shuffled out of the hiding spot and promptly found the cart you had been using last. You managed to re-join Miss Miyumi before she grew suspicious of your abrupt disappearance and were able to finish the most of the documents in your charge.
As you spent your last moments in the emptied library, Shinsou peeked one last time from the secret place and smiled to himself.
