Author Spotlight: @JaCrispy_Jamaine

If you had to describe yourself in one word, what words wouldn't you use?

Normal. Normal is boring so please don't call me that.

Think back to when you were in school. What was your favourite subject?

Definitely English. As tiring as it was, I was really good at it and almost all of my favorite teachers were the English teachers.

When you were a young 'un, what did you want to be when you grew up?

For the longest time, I wanted to be a scientist of some kind, mainly either an astronomer or a meteorologist since I knew a lot about space and weather.

What does Tevun-Krus mean to you?

To me, it means that the science fiction genre is nowhere even close to dead. It is an art form that can be built on and studied as extensively as anything else. Being recognized for having an influence on the genre (at least here on Wattpad) is a tremendous honor and I'm very happy to be a part of it.

Tell us about your reading/writing habits. If you're not a writer, then simply the former will suffice!

As a reader, I'll admit I've been faltering a bit. I'm more of a visual learner so I'm far more knowledgeable in movies than in literature, especially since being forced to read for school takes away some of the enjoyment of reading for pleasure. However, when reading, I definitely lean heavily towards fiction, stories with events that might not be capable of occurring in the real world but are still very parallel to things that CAN happen. And it's the same for my writing. Even if I'm creating a story that could never happen, I still fill it with themes and situations that almost anyone in the world could experience. And I'll also admit I really should write faster; I procrastinate a lot.

As your crew casts your lifeless body into the heart of the nearest star, list three pieces of music likely to be rattling the bulkheads of your beloved vessel!

Very specific question right there! Cool one though because I love music with a passion. And to answer your question, these songs would play in order:

1) "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter (AKA one of the saddest pieces of classical music ever, one that I hope gets the sorrow out of my crew's hearts and minds)

2) "Clair de Lune" by Claude Debussy (one of the most beautiful classical pieces ever, one that I hope would comfort my crew and remind them of the beautiful universe surrounding them)

3) "Smile" by Nat King Cole (for further comfort and encouragement and a reminder that even if my life is over, theirs have only just begun).

Who is your all-time favourite author? How much, if at all, has their work influenced your writing style?

I'll be honest: I'm not sure if I have one. My style of writing is probably far too simple to be compared to one of the greats. I think I'd just say it alternates between Rick Riordan (loads of fun while also easy to comprehend) and Ray Bradbury (artistic and complex when the story needs to be).

Of everything you've written, which piece is your favourite?

Personally I love all my stories equally simply because writing is absolutely cathartic. But the one I give credit to most is Cognitive Deviance because I've always wanted to write a cyberpunk story and because it's what got me noticed by the higher-ups at Wattpad. Because of that story, I'm part of the Paid Stories program AND the Star program!

Pitch the above story to us. Make us really want to read it!

Set in the year 2045, one third of the U.S. population has been diagnosed with some form of mental illness. Prejudice spreads and violent crime escalates, resulting in the creation of Psychwatch, a technologically advanced organization combining law enforcement with mental health. Psychwatch monitors the mental stability of the country's citizens while putting down people who are too far gone, resulting in large ghettos full of frightened mentally ill people known as Psycho Slums. Margo Sandoval is the newest recruit to the organization, one with hopes of bettering the world and bringing sympathy to her patients. But an enigmatic serial killer unseen by Psychwatch's signals has emerged from the shadows, preying on innocents while working to turn the world against the organization. It's up to Margo and her colleagues to take him down, resulting in a treacherous mission in which bonds are tested, secrets come to light, and reality itself becomes harder and harder to trust...

To what extent does the mythical 'real life' influence your writing?

Far more than I intend to. Sometimes you write things and you end up discovering you put a part of yourself in the story without even trying. And while my life's nowhere near as violent or action-packed as that of my characters, many of their mental and emotional struggles are ones I've dealt with before. My fears, hopes, goals, and sometimes my own personal values often appear in the story, and it's not always intentional.

If you could have any superpower, what would that be and why?

Easy: teleportation. I used to want telekinesis, but I think teleportation is more useful. I could save so much on traveling and gas! Plus, I could go back to vacation spots I love so much.

What would you do if you woke up one day and suddenly realized you were an alien from another world?

I'd finally figure out why I'm so weird. But at the same time now I know why everyone else is weird in their own ways, too.

The Technological Singularity presents a rather daunting, some say inevitable, future. Does the prospect of that level of artificial intelligence excite you, or leave you quaking in your space boots?

I'd definitely be quaking in my space boots. Machines are dangerous enough with humans. But by themselves? I know they would kick all of our asses for taking advantage of them for the last few centuries.

Who was your first Sci-Fi crush? Who is your current one?

Definitely Princess Leia was my first. As for my current...I honestly don't know! I definitely have a celebrity crush (I'm not revealing who she is...unless you ask politely lol), but I can't think of any sci-fi ones.

If you could experience the world of any Sci-Fi story on Wattpad, which would that be and why?

Considering that most sci-fi stories on Wattpad are dystopian, I definitely wouldn't want to be in one of those. Not because they suck (there are so many amazing stories on here actually), but because I know I'd be the disposable side character in most of them.

And finally, any words of wisdom to new and aspiring Sci-Fi writers?

I'm not gonna lie: originality is hard to come by these days. However, the one thing that makes every story unique is twists on conventions. Twisting what's familiar and combining it with something no one has ever seen in either a long time or ever before! Even taking familiar things and deconstructing the hell out of them, bringing them closer to reality than ever. A story about robots taking over the world? Done to death. A story about robots having their own caste system and repeating the humans mistakes? Interesting! Unfamiliar! Point is: take any idea that comes to your brain and make it yours. Craft the world your way, build the characters your way, and tell a story that you not only believe probably hasn't been told before, but one you believe is worth telling.
