The Birth of a Punk

The Science Fiction subgenre jungle is overcrowded by ersatz of the Punk grandfather: the Cyberpunk. Ooorah!'s SF Sub-Genre Definitions gives a total of twenty six Punk subgenre for the reader's enjoyment.

There seems to be so many subgenre of the Punk sort. The word itself, 'Punk', tends to be used to glamourize an idea or theme in the literary art, and the culture in general. The question, therefore, is what makes a genre worthy of the 'Punk' label? What can become 'Punk'?

Take it that way. Can I have some Boob-Punk please? Why not?

For the record, this request is legitimate, or so it seems, since we had an enlightened discussion in the Ooorah! thread, back on the Orange forum.

What would make Boob-Punk a legitimate punk subgenre? It would be too easy to just say: "this is Sci-Fi with a predominance of female curvy mounds, so this is bip-punk!"

The idea of a busty punk subgenre started with this discussion I mentioned earlier. Here are some snippet, so you'd see it wasn't just trash talk. It all started (it sounds the introduction of an epopee... ☺) with the really serious and highly educational talk of angry bra, or how the bras would manifest their anger...

HardeeBurger:

[...] I actually think of it as a bra being mean to its boobs. Like in a Marvin the Martian sorta way.

"Ooh! That make me very angry. Very angry indeed."

And then the boobs, I suppose are like Bugs Bunny.

Now that is really weird. Someone should write a story.

:-)

angerbda:

That's an interesting plot

Not sure where to start... A bio-engineered Bra that ends up getting its own will? A robot like Bra that forget the prime directive? An alien species that came to invade Earth and disguised themselves as Bra?

// Checking which TK release this could fit into //

I am not too sure about a Marvin the Martian Bra version though. Unless You have the twin boobs Bunny and Dodgers.. I'd get angry also having to support those two :))

HardeeBurger, adding some more plot ideas to the bra-based story:

[...]

"I, Duck Dodgers in the Twenty-Fifth-and-a-Half Century, claim this boob in the name of Earth!"
"Well, I claim this boob in the name of Mars. Isn't that special? Hmm? Hmm??"
"Look, Pipsqueak. There's not enough room in this bra for the two of us. So, out you go!"
SHOVE!
"Ooh. You have made me angry. Yes. Very angry indeed. I shall have to disintegrate e-you."

And... scene! Cue the pig!

"A-beya-abeya-abeya... That's all, Folks!"

:-)

angerbda:

I see there seems to be some interest for the subject... Do you think this means there is some room for a "Boob Punk" subgenre? I'm pretty sure there would be some interest lol

I think the plot with the alien race that tries to invade Earth by passing as bra... would be a good start of a series of "Invasion: Fail!" story... after all, imagine the aliens getting all information while absorbing the knowledge of humankind through bras... they wouldn't get anything from the male side of the population.... though... it could be viewed borderline sexist...

Anyway... need to occupy the mind while waiting the 36 hours (less now) before the next release lol

HardeeBurger:

Boobs are often prominent in modern SciFi movies.

The aliens could mount a successful ad campaign where women unwittingly start wearing bras that hypnotize all men. Then women take over the world, and share it thankfully with the Boobie Aliens,

Following these few exchanges, a number of passers-by reacted to the 'boob' content. Proof is those following valuable contribution to the fluffy and fleshy subgenre definition:

eyeexeyeeye:

I hereby submit the following idea to the only one who could do it justice.

Umm...stick with me now.

"Steamy...Boobs...Punk"

"Unbeknownst to our heros Smith and Jones the entities of Cleavage Castle had watched them from the very beginning. Nestled safely between the twin mounds of..."

And for your information its not the size or the shape men find fascinating. Its the variety.

AngusEcrivain:

Now to address the breasticle situation...

There is a school of thought that claims Sci-Fi is not just about Big Guns & Big Tits. There is also a school of thought that claims that statement is bullshit.

If y'all want BoobPunk I shall give you BoobPunk, although out of respect for those delicious and fleshy mounds I think it's only fair that us fellas take a step back and allow the ladies in the house to come up with a workable definition.

So this is a call to arms - or more accurately, a call to bras! I leave it to you, ladies, angerbdakrazydiamondLeighWStuartelveloyCarolinaCfallen_tear and any other individuals of the female persuasion who care to do so, to define this 'BoobPunk,' on behalf of Ooorah!

Does it mean that there is an interest for the elaborated plots proposed? Does it mean that people are just simple beings reacting to fleshy words? What does this make of the ones who proposed said plots?

Anyway... Here is my mission now, defining the BoobPunk subgenre so it fit in the punk subculture and the Science Fiction universe.

***

This could well become the next punk in the series, the twenty-seventieth punk subgenre to add to Ooorah!'s catalogue.

Reverting back to the Punks in Science Fiction. It is commonly accepted that the first to come had been Cyberpunk. Following, some variations had been added to the cyber to become bio, green, steam, clock, candle... whatever made it slightly punk in a sci-fi way.

When we look in more detail, there are some common point to the different punks, and some high level classification that can be added to sort through the rebel jungle.

A good number of the punk subgenres could be split between main groups. This grouping is nowhere official, more like my interpretation of the subgenres distinctions and their focus seems to differ slightly, some emphasising the period, others the science or the culture.

Time punk:

The first and most known of this group is Steampunk. A really interesting analyse of the Timepunk by Alexander Knorr define Timepunk as follow:

"The concept of the technologically driven alternative course of history became a widely disseminated object of fascination. A downright inflation of genre-, or sub-genre-labels set in. Meanwhile quite some terms, all constructed after the blueprint 'steampunk,' are around. In chronological order of the 'technology epochs' they are refering to: stonepunk, bronzepunk, sandalpunk, candlepunk, clock- or springpunk, steampunk, dieselpunk, atom[ic]punk, transistorpunk, and bitpunk.
All those 'genres' can be grouped under the superordinate concept 'timepunk,' as the core idea is always the same. E.g. dieselpunk renders a fictitious era from the 1920s to '50s which is not only defined by the war, art deco, pulp-fiction heroes, and swing, but also by a diesel technology which has 'taken off' and dominates culture and society."

Science punk:

The science punk focus on the scientific and technological aspect of the story. Cyberpunk, Biopunk, Greenpunk, nanopunk... are part of this group. However, it can also be assimilated to the Timepunk categorisation, though it features a futuristic World more than talking about past societies.

"Yet, timepunk is more than a collection of retrofuturistic instances, which use a historical period as a starting point and pivot for narrative phantasies. For cyberpunk derivatives set in the future a similar array of terms is around. The neologisms biopunk—or ribofunk, as↑ has suggested (1996)—, greenpunk (referring to the green revolution, namely the extensive use of specially bred seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides), and nanopunk point towards the respective technologies which are deemed to be dominant, and which are represented accordingly."

Culture punk:

I hesitated to add this group, as it also can be assimilated to either TimePunk or the Science punk orientated subgenres. Culture punk emphasises the more the lifestyle aspects than the time frame or the technology. Therefore, GhothPunk would have its place in this group. Would Wattpunk end in this group? Most likely.

Whatever the categorisation or the definition of the punk subgenres, they all share similar traits and plot orientation:

A focus on technology, a depiction of advanced technology for the timeline the story is in.

An element of rebellion where main characters are marginalized.

Probably some Retro-futuristic elements.

Somehow, an alternate version of the World as we know it.

What would the Boob-Punk subgenre look like then?

The first steps in defining it is to identify the timeframe, the culture and the scientific aspects of this specific punk-to-be. Few ideas come to mind in this regard:

Obviously, the main subject of this Punk has to be the BOOBS.

One idea of the subgenre orientation would be following the actual western Boob Culture of breast augmentation, breast fetishism, Victoria Secrets models, Maxim's and Playboy centerfold... Add to it the bunch of selfies you can find on the web with girls showing their mammal extensions...

There is, however, another aspect of the boobs: the maternal aspect, where there is no sexualisation of the implements. I read somewhere, according to ethnology researches, that only 10 to 15 percent of the World societies consider the breasts as sexual objects (look toward the North West)

Considering the three points above, the question on how the Boobs would be marginalized, how they would fight the establishment, how the establishment would be defined... All these points remained for the writer to think about and elaborate.

Now that this is said, what would be your Boob-Punk plot? Or perhaps you have other punk up your sleeve?
