Time travel : levart emiT
I think it's safe to say that when we're all honest, we have a thing for time travel. The idea of being free to leap the boundaries of space and time hold something very appealing to us within its folds. It has the same allure as immortality: something that is beyond us, completely beyond out reach? Well, just let me dream on it for a little while.
And what dreams they are, too.
I was fourteen when my absolute literature-love-affair with Madeleine L'engle began. I spent hours at my grandparents' kitchen table trying to figure out what the first, second, third, and fourth dimensions look like. The idea of the tesseract completely swept me off my feet, and it still stands as one of my favorite stories—adventure, bravery, love. I was sold from the first squishy-booted step Mrs. Whatsit took inside the creaky, comfy home of the Murry's.
From then, I've been privileged to join in on the adventures of many others who defied that space-time line. From The Doctor, himself, and his blue police box, to the sweeping romance and A+ storytelling of Diana Gabaldon, I am thankful for the mind-opening escape of authors and creators who have refused to let the limitations of man affect their tales.
One set of stories that comes to mind when we start talking about going beyond—or to where no man has gone before, the final frontier, you know—I can't help but think of Star Trek. And in light of recent events, Mr. Leonard Nimoy, himself. Who worked to break the boundaries of everyday, human life better than the half-human, half-Vulcan man himself?
So cheers, Mr. Nimoy. This one's for you. Thank you for teaching us that people are people, culture is real and powerful, expectations are meant to be broken, and, of course, to live long and prosper.
May we take encouragement from your characters and your life and go boldly where no man has gone before.
Guys, what's your favorite? Time travel? The Doctor? Nimoy quote, episode, moment? Let's get this discussion going, below.
