Nablai's Nebula

March has arrived with so many surprises. Spring in the air, this is the month to start something new with a flair. Risks are taken, challenges met and mistakes made. And yet, there's space for change--to better ourselves in the most amazing of ways. Adding punk to anything amps up the interesting and makes it more trendy.

This month's genre or theme as we call it is a fourth issue in a series of three themes. Spanning ten years, the first issue-Final Contact, was published on 8 July, 2013. It was also Tevun-Krus's launch issue as a monthly e-zine and a really really defining moment for everyone at the mothership. A hell of a fucking proud of us, as we'd say...

This theme was revisited on 7 Aug, 2017 with Tevun-Krus #53 Return to First Contact issue, followed by the 5 May, 2018, Tevun-Krus #60 Final Contact. This year we are making sure you do not forget this wonderful theme, so here's "Forgotten Contact" for you.

With punk music on our lips, let's dive right in.

I commend the punksters who know and have studied protopunk, punk rock, post-punk, hardcore, grunge, pop punk, garage-punk and every punkpunk under the sun. These are the people who are aware of the Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, Flamin' Groovies, Ramones, Heartbreakers and Blondie. There's a lot of stuff that was overlooked or abandoned or lost for the lack of finances, technical backup or probably the fact that they were way ahead of their times and that's why they were reviled by critics and trolled by the public. I take this opportunity to introduce you to the punks who shaped the modern rock with their originality.

- City Slang from Sonic's Rendezvous Band:

Existing from 1975-1980, this band is responsible for one of the most uninhibited, absolutely exciting, immensely powerful songs in rock. Made as a result of a fallout of Detroit's finest bands, Sonic's Rendezvous Band comprised of the Stooges' Ashton brothers, a bassist from the Up, and was fronted by MC5 main man Fred "Sonic" Smith.

The band released one official single and left a trail of bootlegs and unofficial live releases. It's sad not many have heard the legendary City Slang single.

- Philosophy of the World by The Shaggs:

The Shaggs wanted to set the world on fire with their music, but their attempts fizzled out. Formed on the insistence of their father-Austin Wiggin in Fremont, New Hampshire, 1965; this American band featured the sisters Dorothy "Dot" Wiggin (vocals and lead guitar), Betty Wiggin (vocals and rhythm guitar), Helen Wiggin (drums) and later, Rachel Wiggin (bass guitar).

Their music has polar reviews and has been described as being amongst the worst of all time, with some calling their music as a work of unintentional brilliance. As if there could be any doubt about it, Frank Zappa declared the Shaggs to be greater than the Beatles.

- Half Machine Lip Moves, Chrome:

Chrome were the ultimate sci-fi future-punks. They have been cited as forerunners of the 1980s industrial music boom. The band was initially formed in San Francisco, 1975 by Damon Edge (real name Thomas Wisse: drums, vocals, synths, production) and Gary Spain (bass guitar, violin).

Chrome started life with "The Visitation" album in 1976. The introduction of Helios Creed into the fold was instrumental in the growth of the band to new heights with their second album "Alien Soundtracks" in 1977. The third album "Half Machine Lip Moves" was released in 1979.

Alternative Press included Chrome in their 1996 list of "100 underground inspirations of the past 20 years.

- Walk to the Fire by Monoshock:

Monoshock are a revelation. A Californian psychedelic punk band, their debut double album "Walk to the Fire", was a tribute to everything raw in rock and roll. Their sound alternates between psyched-out wah-wah blues and hard noise. Ignored in their time, they broke up after moving to Oakland. Monoshock's influence (particularly on Dead Meadow and Comets on Fire) is inescapable.

- Hotwire My Heart, Crime:

Crime were legendary San Franciscan punks. Created in 1976, the band was composed of Johnny Strike (vocals, guitar), Frankie Fix (vocals, guitar), Ron "The Ripper" Greco (bass; ex-Flamin' Groovies), and Ricky Tractor (Ricky Williams) (drums). Their debut singles "Hot Wire My Heart" and "Baby You're So Repulsive", appeared at the end of 1976. My Heart was the first punk single to emerge in the US.

There are so many more iconic forgotten bands that have slipped through the cracks of history that this almost seems like a revival for them of sorts. Some like:

Generic Album by Flipper, Academy Fight Song / That's When I Reach for my Revolver by Mission of Burma, No Fun, Dr Mix and the Remix are worthy of being remembered and celebrated.

This is me, Nab, saying goodbye for now ❤️ We'll meet again very soon with another article and a new theme.

Love you and take care =]
