Test The Limits
"You have any idea what's going on?" Signe whispered to Amy, sounding slightly panicked. Both of them were being escorted to a police car by the same officer that had interrogated Amy, their coaches being forced to ride in a different car for reasons the officer refused to explain.
"Not really, only that apparently Taylor found something about their disappearances." She whispered back as they clambered into the backseat.
Once they arrived, Amy was surprised to see police tape put up all around the center of the rink since she couldn't see what was there. Even when she was brought closer, she couldn't tell why the police were investigating the taped off area.
Until they showed her a small hole that was previously covered that was just big enough for a miniature smoke grenade to fit through.
"Is there anything down there?" Amy asked the nearest officer.
They only shrugged in reply before turning to speak to their partner, brushing her off much to her annoyance.
"I'm glad you guys could come." Taylor walked towards them with a small grin, Felix and Marzia in tow.
"How did you find it?" Amy asked Taylor incredulously.
He looked to his left, then to his right to make sure no one was listening before leaning in close to her.
"Murphy called me from one of the phones in the station when the officer interrogating him went to use the bathroom. He knows a couple of tricks Anti had used in his past." Taylor informed her in a whisper.
"He certainly had a lot of them." Murphy remarked, equally as quiet as he joined the group with Smith standing beside him. She looked different with dark bags under her eyes from lack of sleep and eyes constantly rimmed with red.
"We need to send a team down there." One of the officers announced.
"I'll go." Amy and Signe volunteered in unison.
"We're in." Marzia and Felix declared, exchanging glances.
"I will as well." Murphy placed a reassuring hand on Signe's shoulder.
"Me too." Smith and Taylor chimed in, stepping up with their team.
"Fine, as long as you go with a couple of officers." The officer agreed reluctantly, signaling for two male officers to come over.
"These are officers Jerry and Jeremiah." The officer pointed to the man on the left, then the one on the right.
Officer Jerry had buzz cut caramel brown hair and hazel eyes, his face clean shaven and expression serious with a tinge of excitement barely concealed by a small frown.
Officer Jeremiah had black hair that was buzz cut and sky blue eyes, his expression solemn with no trace of any other emotion.
"You'll need these." Officer Jeremiah handed each of them a flashlight while Officer Jerry impatiently shifted from foot to foot as a group of officers worked together to widen the hole, revealing an elevator shaft with an elevator that can only be operated from the inside.
"I'll watch these three." Officer Jerry gestured at the three coaches.
"I'll take of the others then." Officer Jeremiah nodded as they began their descent down the elevator shaft.
Signe tried to ignore the sense of claustrophobia filling her chest by taking deep breaths and allowing the others to go first. The two groups started climbing down either side of the shaft, using the wires connected to the elevator as a way to help them climb down.
Hold on guys, we'll be there soon, Signe thought, hoping they were okay.
At the moment, Dark and Mark felt far from okay.
The two had grudgingly agreed to not fight each other so they could escape and find Anti and Jack faster.
"I'm worried about him, he's not okay in here." Dark lightly tapped the side of his head.
"He's crazy?" Mark asked, not really surprised.
"No...he has a tendency to hurt himself." Dark sighed, running a hand through his black hair in exasperation.
"Does he..." Mark trailed off.
Dark seemed to know what he was thinking and nodded..
They both fell into an awkward silence for a couple of moments before Mark had an idea.
"Just pretend that you're willing to rejoin his group, then get us out of here!" Mark suggested.
"Oh that won't work, even though movies seem to disagree with me." Infelix overheard them, stopping in front of their cell.
"But, I will let you out." Infelix produced a single bras key from his pocket with a flourish before inserting it in the lock and turning it until it made a loud click, unlocking the cell.
Dark and Mark eagerly pushed the door open and shoved past Infelix, starting to run in what they hoped was the right direction until they ran into something large and covered in fur.
The creature had dark brown fur along it's spine and large claws on its feet and hands. At first, Mark thought it was a werewolf, but realized he was wrong when he saw that there was no long snout.
"Meet your surprise and my newest recruit, Sinnamon T. Ken, or Sin for short." Infelix beamed, patting the creature on the arm.
Sin only grunted in response, glaring at Dark and Mark with beady black eyes that were narrowed with what Mark suspected was either suspicion or hunger.
Probably both.
"You two be good while I get Anti and Jack." Infelix instructed before walking back the way they had came, returning with the two in a couple of minutes.
Anti tried reaching for Dark, but was blocked off by Sin. He stepped in between the two pairs and growled menacingly, most likely a warning sound.
"Dark-"
Anti was cut off when Sin swiped his large fur covered arm at him, hitting him square in the chest. He flew back and hit the corner of the hallway with his head, causing his vision to spin momentarily, black spots dancing in his vision.
No no no, I can't pass out now!, Anti thought as he tried to fight the black dots to stay awake and help the others.
He didn't succeed.
"This place is like a maze." Felix whistled in amazement as they walked down the metal hallways, their shoes creating a clanging noise with every step they took.
"Mark?" Amy called out hesitantly as she paused for a moment, hoping he would answer. She heard no reply back much to her disappointment.
Instead, she heard a bear like roar from not too far away.
Eyes widened in panic, she started sprinting towards where the sound emanated from, the others quickly following after her.
They skidded to a halt when they found themselves face to face with a beast like man that was extremely muscular and covered in brown fur. He lunged towards them, but his claws fell short of them by a few inches when Mark jumped on its back, confusing the beast.
"Mark!" Amy yelled in relief, glad to see him alive.
Mark's attention flicked over to her for a brief moment, giving the beast enough time to crush Mark against the wall with his back.
Jack quickly ran to his aid, managing to distract the beast enough to make it move, allowing Mark to drop to the floor. He gasped for air as he dropped to the floor, Amy and Smith running over to help him up.
He nodded in appreciation, attempting to run back to the fight but was stopped by Amy's gentle yet firm grip on his arm.
The two officers joined the fray, chasing the creature as it rampaged through the halls. Dark, Jack, and Anti took their charge as an opportunity to retreat, covered in sweat and out of breath.
Jack was nearly knocked to the floor when Signe ran up and hugged him tightly. His chest screamed in pain, but he ignored it, glad to be back with Signe.
Dark had walked over to the unconscious Anti and gently kissed his forehead before he delicately lifted him up in his arms, carrying him bridal style with Anti's head resting on his shoulder
"They're gone." Officer Jeremiah panted as he jogged back with Officer Jerry.
"They both just...disappeared." Officer Jerry huffed with a hint of irritation in his tone.
"We should go then." Amy suggested, wanting to be back on the surface as soon as possible.
They all nodded in agreement and attempted to use the elevator, only to find the same screen the monitors had when they were hacked.
"I guess we're going back up the fun way." Officer Jeremiah grumbled under his breath as he climbed in top of the elevator and helped the others up before grabbing onto the cables.
Dark had Anti carefully draped over his shoulder, occasionally adjusting him to make sure he stayed somewhat comfortable.
Signe held Jack's hand the entire time since he was afraid of heights, constantly reminding him to look ahead and not down.
They practically flopped onto the ground once they reached the surface, finally breathing fresh air for the first time in what felt like says to them when in reality they had been underground for only a couple of hours.
The press swarmed them, but thankfully the officers managed to form a blockade and keep them at a distance from the group as they walked outside, dismayed to find even more news vans and reporters with giant cameras flashing at them with every move they made.
Officer Jerry and Jeremiah brought the group back to the hotel to prepare for the trip back home since the competition had been cancelled due to the recent events that had occurred.
"What do we do now?" Amy wondered aloud as her and Mark entered their room.
Mark opened his mouth to reply, but was interrupted by his phone vibrating on his bedside table. He glanced at it, intrigued to see that he had received another email from YouTube.
He scanned the message before his face brightened up in a genuine smile, cheering as he spun Amy around in the circle and began excitedly pacing the hotel room, re-reading the message to make sure it was true.
"What?" Amy asked eagerly.
"Since fans have been rioting, YouTube finally agreed to pay YouTubers again!" He announced excitedly like a child on Christmas learning that they had gotten a new bike.
Their moment was interrupted when they heard a couple of knocks on the door. Hesitantly, Mark cracked the door open to find Felix, Marzia, Dark, Anti, Signe, and Jack standing outside the door all smiling widely.
"Guessing you guys heard the news too?" Mark stepped aside, allowing them inside.
Jack nodded quickly, perching on the edge of Mark's bed.
"We have to leave today." Signe chimed in.
"I'm kinda glad honestly." Anti admitted, carefully pressing a hand against the wad of bandages on the back of his head that was suppose to heal the cut he received when his head hit the corner.
"I'm gonna miss you guys." Dark added.
The others muttered their agreements, their mood seeming to drop.
"I just wanted to say goodbye, we have to get back to packing." Jack sighed as he stood up and hugged everyone goodbye before reluctantly going back to his room with Signe. One by one the other pairs left as well, leaving Mark and Amy alone once more.
Once Signe and Jack finished packing, they went down to the lobby and met Murphy there to say one last goodbye to him.
"You two sure that you don't want to skate next year?" Murphy repeated the question he had already asked three times now.
"I promise." Jack laughed, hugging him before stepping aside to let Signe say her goodbyes.
"Thank you." He whispered into her ear when she hugged him. Jack and Signe took one last glance over their shoulder at the hotel before they took their rental car back and took a taxi to the airport, arriving just in time for the first flight to Ireland.
As the plane took off, he reclined back in his seat to sleep while Signe took out her art equipment, sketching Jack while he slept with his knit cap tilted so it covered his eyes.
Maybe we could move past all this, Signe thought as she started drawing. She then realized that she didn't want to, even when all of the terrible things happened.
Because of what happened, she finally dared herself to test the limits of everything, including her friendships. That was what made it worth it in the end, not the competition.
