15 - I Trust Them
Once I arrive at testing, I follow the scientist to the testing room. She seems to be excited.
"Why are you excited?" I ask.
"I just am," she replies.
"Oh," I say.
In the testing room, she hands me a purple drink.
"Here, drink this."
I take it from her and drink it. Then I lay down on the bed. I fall asleep.
"End program," says the scientist.
I start hearing voices, but the scientist hasn't told me to get up yet.
"Do you think we are ready?" an unknown voice says.
"Yes. I think so," the scientist says.
"It's all been going good so far..." the unknown voice speaks again.
"I'm soooo excited! We've been working hard for this day!" says the scientist.
What are they talking about?
"It seems we will have a higher chance of success if she isn't in the program," says a second unknown voice.
"Why is that?" the scientist asks.
"I don't know. We can have the machine put her in the program," the second unknown voice says.
"I see. Let's do that then."
"Should we tell her to get up?" the first unknown voice says.
"Hmm..." says the scientist.
"Come on! It doesn't really matter that we are here, does it?"
"She doesn't know any other scientists."
"I say we should stay in here. It will not really matter. We are scientists like you. Although it's your decision," says the second unknown voice.
"Fine," says the scientist.
"I'll do it!" says the first unknown voice.
"No," says the scientist.
"What? She's being unfair! Don't you agree, scientist 112?" asks the unknown voice.
The second unknown voice, or scientist 112 says, "You never take things seriously. I'm surprised you're even a scientist. You should be a test subject. Or one of the people who work in the Mess Hall. Or one of the people who clean."
"What?" the unknown voice says.
"I'll do it. Get up," the scientist says to me.
I get up.
"Sit," says scientist 112.
I sit.
"Good. That works," says scientist 112.
"Hello. Why are all these people here?" I ask the scientist.
"Hello. You can stand if you want. They are here because of your testing," the scientist says.
"Oh."
"I would like you to follow us," says scientist 112.
"Understood," I reply.
"Actually. Drink this and lay down," says scientist 112 handing me a purple drink.
I lay down and then drink it. I fall asleep...
"End program," says scientist 112.
"You can get up," says a scientist I don't know.
"Who are you? Is my testing over?" I ask.
"No, not yet. I'm another scientist," says a scientist that I don't know. I'll just call them "scientist 1."
"Hey! I am too!" says someone else who I'll call "scientist 2."
"I would like you to follow me," says scientist 1.
I nod, and follow her, the scientist, and scientist 2 down the hallway.
I feel like I haven't seen this brightly lit hallway in forever. I know that couldn't be true. I haven't seen it in a few days at most. I still feel like it's been days... I still feel like it's been over a month.
We arrive at a room, a room with a big machine.
"I would like to look at you. Is that alright?" scientist 1 asks.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"I need to look everywhere around you. Are you comfortable with that?" she asks.
"Yeah, I think so," I reply.
"I can't wait to see this!" says scientist 2.
"Scientist 142 leave. This isn't something for you to see. You're not a girl," says scientist 1.
Scientist 2, or who I now know is Scientist 142, leaves the room.
"Take your clothes off," says scientist 1.
I take my clothes off. Scientist 1 then looks at me. This person is a girl like I am and a scientist, so I do not feel uncomfortable. I wonder why she has to do this, but I don't ask.
"Good. You can put your clothes back on for a few minutes. You must be feeling uncomfortable. I have some questions to ask you," she says.
I put my clothes back on, even though I don't feel uncomfortable.
"How are you feeling?" she asks.
"I am feeling good."
"Scientist 136, can you ask these questions? I have to finish this," says scientist 1 going over to a programmer. Programmers are used to program.
"Yes. Do you feel that anything is wrong?" the scientist I have known for a long time now, or scientist 136, asks me.
"I feel like a lot of time has passed," I reply.
"I see. Do you feel there is anything wrong with you?"
"No."
"Good. Are you happy?"
"I think so."
"That's good. Do you like the other scientists?"
"I like other one in this room. I don't like the one who left the room."
"Do you want any of the other scientists in here?"
"I don't want the one who left the room in here."
"Do you remember anything strange?"
"No."
"That's all the questions I have to ask you."
"136!!!!!!" yells scientist 1.
"What is it 112?" asks scientist 136.
"You!!!! You have made so many mistakes! If actually checked your programming, then half the mistakes wouldn't have been made!!! If you didn't make so many mistakes we would be long done!" yells scientist 112.
"Sorry... Sorry..." says scientist 136.
"Sorry is all you have to say?"
"It doesn't matter now, does it? At least it works."
"What are you fighting about?" I ask.
"You don't need to worry about it," says scientist 136.
"I'll tell you what we were arguing about. It's this scientist over here's stupidity. She doesn't check her work while programming," says scientist 112 gesturing to scientist 136.
"Hey!" says scientist 136.
"It's true."
"Shouldn't we get started?"
"I'm fixing your mistakes."
"You are?"
"Yeah, since I need to check over this. You've made so many mistakes in the past that I'm sure there are plenty of mistakes here. I see another one."
"You don't need to let the whole world know!"
"What should I do?" I ask after a few minutes.
"Alright! I'm coming in!" says the scientist who left the room bursting in, "Huh? You're not done yet? I could swear you were..."
"You didn't even knock and you didn't even know if we were done or not! Out. Out. Out. She doesn't want you in here in the first place," says scientist 136.
"You're just saying that. You want me in here, right?" scientist 142 asks me.
"No," I reply.
"What? I'm fun right? Better than the other two? You like me, right?"
"I hate you."
"Now out!" yells scientist 136.
"I'll just wait outside then..." says scientist 142.
"No. Go find your next job. You can tell them you were kicked out," says scientist 136.
"That's no fun!"
"Well you're not part of this. If you're not going to do anything, you might as well be a test subject."
"Ugh. Fine! You're no fun!" he says, leaving. He slams the door behind him. I can hear him walk away.
"We are almost ready," says scientist 112.
"Good," says scientist 136.
"Please sit down on this chair," says scientist 112 gesturing to a weird chair.
I sit down on the chair. Scientist 112 walks over to it and pushes a button. It starts to make noise.
"What is this?" I ask.
"It's part of your testing. I'll be turning it off soon."
"Alright."
It makes noise for a few more minutes, and then scientist 112 turns it off.
She goes over to a small machine and looks at something.
"Good," she says.
"I would like you to take your clothes off again," she says.
I take them off.
She walks over something in the room.
"Please stand here," she says gesturing for me to stand on something.
"136, get the machine ready. We will be ready to use it really soon. It would be better to start it now since it takes a few minutes to get ready. You know how to get it ready, right?" she asks scientist 136.
"I know part of it," says scientist 136.
"Then do the part you know. Is that part in the beginning?"
"Yes, the parts I know are the first steps."
"Alright. Then do those steps."
Scientist 112 turns something on by pushing a button on the side of what I am standing on. She then looks at a small machine on the counter. I notice there is something on it that is going up and down.
"All done," she says after a few minutes pressing the button again.
"How did it go?" scientist 136 asks.
"It was good. I'll help you get the machine ready."
"What can I do?" I ask.
"You can sit down. We are getting something ready."
"Alright," I say sitting down on a chair.
"Now you do this," says scientist 112 to scientist 136 pointing to something and then doing it.
Scientist 136 nods.
"Next you have to press this button. You then have to wait a few minutes," scientist 112 says to scientist 136 pressing the button.
After a few minutes, scientist 112 says, "You press this button next to open it."
The big machine opens up revealing an area that looks like a bed with a blanket surrounded by walls that only go around half a foot above the bottom of the thing.
"Now you press this button to get the blanket away," says scientist 112 pressing the button.
136 nods.
"You then press this to open up the side. You can open up either side. This button opens the right side and this one opens the left side. If you press either of these buttons two times, that side closes back up," says scientist 112.
"What if I open up a side without putting the blanket away first?" asks scientist 136.
"The blanket falls down and you have to reset it. There's a button over here," says scientist 112 going somewhere else at the machine.
"Do I have to close that side back up first?"
"Yes. You would press this button. It resets the blanket," says scientist 112 pointing to a button.
"I see."
Scientist 112 faces me and says, "Will you get into here?"
"Where?" I ask.
"I'll show you."
"I'm a little uncomfortable being naked."
"You have to be naked because of testing."
"Oh."
"Lie down here," she says pointing to the area where the blanket used to be.
I lay down.
"Now you try bringing the side back up," says scientist 112 to scientist 136.
Scientist 136 brings the side back up.
"This button is for bringing the blanket back. As you may have noticed, it is right next to the button for bringing the blanket down," scientist 112 says to scientist 136 and then pressing the button after.
I smile. Whatever they are doing, it is alright. I trust them. I trust whatever they are doing is safe. I start to wonder what they are doing, but I dismiss those thoughts. Whatever they are doing, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what they are doing. It is something safe.
"Here," says scientist 112.
I take the drink from her. It is a yellow drink.
"Should I drink this?" I ask.
"Yes," says scientist 112.
I drink it slowly, and then I hand it back to her.
"Here is how to close it," says scientist 112.
I can feel the thing I am in start to go back, and I feel myself fall asleep very quickly, quicker than the purple drink.
AN: So I wrote this entire chapter today. It's a bit shorter, being around 2k, but who cares. So in the next chapter.... (read below)***
***SPOILER FOR NEXT CHAPTER***
Anyway, the next chapter will have this action that I was talking about in an author's note a few chapters ago. And I'm not sure if I said there would be action in the author's note few chapters ago... Whatever. Either way, I said something.
***NO MORE SPOILER FOR NEXT CHAPTER***
So look forward to it...
