Chapter 3
Tess decided to try to grab a pair of pajamas from her backpack, but Biana had different plans. She dragged Tess up to her room, which was huge. Biana studied her for a few seconds then pulled out a pair of teal pajamas.
"Here you go. Wear these tonight. They'll make your eyes look more blue than green" Biana said as she handed Tess the night clothes. Tess tried to push the away.
"Please, I really just want to wear my own pajamas" Tess said.
"Please wear them? The faster you try to adapt to the Elvin lifestyle, the faster you actually will adapt. And you've got to try little by little" Biana argued. And it worked. Tess changed into the
soft pajamas and looked at herself in the mirror. Her multi-colored hair hung just below her chest and her eyes did look striking blue. She almost looked like a Vacker. The green in her eyes threatened to show itself behind the blue, tinting it green and making it look teal.
"See? Blue is your color" Biana said, admiring Tess in the mirror.
"Thanks Biana. We should get downstairs" Tess said, trying to avoid an awkward conversation. Even though there was an awkward conversation downstairs, as well. They walked down the stairs and were greeted by Alden and Della.
"Hi girls. Biana how about you go into the main room. I need to talk to Tess privately" Alden said
Tess braced for the worse words. She knew how that "private conversation" had worked out for Sophie and she would never talk to her parents again. She followed Alden into his office and sat in the plush armchair. Alden sat at his desk. He looked at her sympathetically.
"Let me guess. You're going to tell me I can't live with my family?" Tess asked with a smile on her face. She hoped she was doing a good job at hiding her emotions.
"Yes. It's far more complicated than that though. You will be erased from your family's and friend's minds. are you okay with that? We could stage a suicide if you can't handle being forgotten" Alden said. Tess thought about that. If she staged a suicide, her best friend could completely lose herself and go. If she was forgotten, her friend's lives would be so much different. She didn't realize how much of an effect she had on her friend's lives until now.
"I want to be erased. My friends would completely lose themselves if they thought I had died" Tess decided. "My family wouldn't be able to handle much more grief"
"I'll have the washers to your family's house immediately. How will you hold up? Are you okay with all of this?" Alden asked.
"Okay? I'm more than okay! I've always wanted to learn how to control my abilities. I already have friends here. And I was also wondering, can I be adopted by Grady and Edaline?" Tess asked. Alden gave her a funny look.
"How do you know Grady and Edaline?" He asked.
"Sophie told me how amazing they are. I think it would be great to live with them. And they may need another strong force to keep them steady. I also have a theory. I think Sophie and I could be sisters. Or even twins" Tess said. She looked at Alden to read his emotions. He was feeling suspicious.
"What is your reasoning?" Alden asked. This is where she had to spill everything she knew about the Lost Cities. And the book.
"So, this is going to sound extremely crazy, but there was a book written about Sophie's life. The series started when Fitz found her in that museum. It's my favorite book, and until today, I thought it was a work of fiction. Anyways, I know about the Black Swan. I feel like I could be made by them just like Sophie was. Forkle probably separated our embryos, but made me more powerful. That's also probably why my eyes are closer to blue. Trust me, I know more than I'm letting on" Tess confessed. She felt as though there was a huge weight lifted off of her shoulders. She knew there was still going to be a lot to explain. She just had to wait for Alden's answer.
"Well, you do seem to know a lot. How many books are there?" Alden asked.
"Three"
"And they're about Sophie's life? Everything from the time Fitz found her in the museum to now?" Alden asked. Tess nodded.
"Very well. I should inform the council about this book. It could endanger our species. The book will have to be destroyed. And as for you being adopted by the Ruewens, I'll do what I can. You have an interesting theory as well. I will have to look into it. No reason to worry" Alden said. There were the words. No reason to worry. She wasn't worried. She was thrilled. Being Sophie Foster's twin sister would be amazing. And there were no parents to make fun of for being a bad match. Tess never looked like any of her family, either. The natural brown, but multi-color haired, teal eyed musician. She stood out in her family. She didn't belong. Now she belonged somewhere. And had a sister. There wasn't any other explanation. Except the Neverseen. But the Neverseen wouldn't allow her to be taken to the Lost Cities. There were too many reasons it couldn't be the Neverseen, and she was fine with that.
"I'll go make a call. You go back out to the main room" Alden said. Tess stood up and left the room to find her way back to the main room. When she got there she found everyone in pajamas with a bunch of beds set up. There were mattresses on the floor and everyone had claimed one. Tess chose the only empty one beside Keefe. He obviously did that on purpose so he could interrogate her. She braced for the worst.
"So, how are you?" Sophie asked. She obviously knew what had just went down in Alden's office.
"I'm fine. I'm going to be erased from my family's lives. And I have asked to be adopted by Grady and Edaline if that's okay?" Tess asked Sophie.
"Of course. That would be great! I can finally have a sister again! And this time she's my age" Sophie said. They all laughed and Tess felt a bit more at home.
"Exactly how old are you?" Fitz asked.
"Fourteen"
"Well, I think you'll like Foxfire. You also look like someone who would be good at P.E. And splotching. Sophie knocked us both out on her first splotching match. Our energy hit each others' and rebounded to hit both of us and push us to the walls. I remember seeing Sophie fly into the wall and then black. We woke up in Elwin's office. It turns out, Sophie used a brainpush, that thing you used when you made the light tornado. I still don't understand how you knew what it was" Fitz said.
"It might just be common knowledge for me. Most Elves know what a brainpush is, right? I could have been given more Elvin knowledge than Forkle gave to Sophie" Tess said.
"Okay, you keep making references to things that have happened in our lives that you shouldn't know about. Are you reading our minds?" Keefe asked.
"No, I promise I'm not reading your minds. There was a book written about Sophie's life. That's how I knew your names and the names of all of the abilities. I have more abilities than I'm letting on. Look" She sang out and made Keefe start slapping himself. Everyone else laughed, but Fitz stared at her in awe.
"You're a Siren. You can control people with your voice. It's irresistible. It's just like mesmerizing someone, but Sirens can reach your emotional control and make you feel something and let you act on your emotions. It's like the ultimate ability, but no elf has it. And getting back to that book. Tell us about it" Fitz said.
"Well the series starts when you found Sophie in the museum. It continues through everything up until now. I believe I could be another Black Swan project. I'm not oblivious to the current situation. I know what everything is and I want to get to the point" Tess said.
"Well, that's definitely not going to happen with the Black Swan. They're so vague I'm surprised Sophie trusts them. But they are her creators so..." Keefe said.
"Well, they could be my creators, too. Look at this" Tess said. She pulled up her sleeve to show her shoulder. On her shoulder was a birthmark that looked like the sign of the swan.
"Why is that there?" Dex asked.
"Because they probably wanted me to know I was created by them as soon as I could figure it out. I read the book and the author posted a picture of the sign of the swan, it looked just like my birth mark. I'm surprised I didn't investigate earlier in my life. Everyone's emotions and thoughts did get to my head sometimes. I was also good at pretending to have the normal human knowledge and intelligence. I had a few times where my parents were asked if I wanted to skip a few grades when I was young. I was made fun of for being smart and I had to dumb myself down so my classmates didn't suspect anything. Trust me, it wasn't fun. And I have the Black Swan to thank. As soon as I read the book I knew why I was different. I always did, but I had an explanation. And now I'm here! I could have a sister and-" Tess started, but was cut off by Alvar.
"Hey little siblings. You having a sleepover?" He asked.
"Yeah. And we have a new friend. Meet Tess" Biana said. Tess rolled her eyes.
"Hi Alvar" Tess said.
"See, it's not hard to acknowledge me" Alvar said, taking a playful glance at Sophie.
"To be fair, I didn't have three books full of information about the Lost Cities" Sophie said with a smirk.
"Aw you should smirk more. You're cute when you look rebellious" Keefe said. He reached over and pecked Sophie's lips. The rest of them fake-gagged, but Tess just smiled at them with admirable eyes.
"Uh, can you guys save the mushy stuff for when I'm not in the room?" Alvar said. Sophie rolled her eyes. "So, I'll let you guys get back to your sleepover and-" He started, but was cut off by a flash of light.
"Sorry Alvar. I can't always control it" Tess said.
"So, new mystery girl is a flasher" Alvar said raising one eyebrow.
"Sort of. Want to see something cool?" Tess asked. Alvar nodded suspiciously. "Watch and learn" she said with a smirk. Alvar looked amused. Tess blew into the air and it started snowing.
"New mystery girl is also a froster" Alvar said.
"New mystery girl has every ability" Tess said.
"Pyrokinesis?" He asked. Tess shook her head. "Well, if you're anything like Sophie, you'll get into a lot of trouble. You'll also probably have some of the same ability sessions together. I'm sure my dad has worked all of that out though. You guys have fun" he said. Then he walked out of the room. This is going to be a long night.
