Chapter 2
They arrived at a somewhat small door and walked in. Inside there was a man with glasses who turned around when he heard the door open. Tess recognized him as Elwin.
"Hello Tess. I'm just going to look you over, okay? Sophie, can you please leave us alone?" Elwin said. Sophie nodded and left the room.
"Okay this won't hurt at all. I'm going to project some light into the air like this" Elwin said. He snapped his fingers and a circle of light appeared.
"I can do that too" Tess said. She opened her hand and fireworks shot out creating light paths.
"Wow. How do you do that? Maybe we can teach each other some things. I could probably teach you to be a physician if we can get you a pair of these glasses" Elwin said.
"I can probably make them myself. Technopath" Tess said.
"What ability don't you have?" Elwin asked, obviously being sarcastic.
"Pyrokinesis. That's the only ability I don't have" Tess said.
"I wasn't expecting that answer" he said. Then he flashed a ring of light around Tess' body. "How did you get your hair like that?" he asked.
Tess looked down at her hair. She wasn't used to people asking about it anymore. She'd have to get used to the "new kid" treatment that she was all-too familiar with.
"My mom dyed it. My human mom, I mean" Tess said. Then she looked down at the floor. This is the first time she felt sad about leaving. Her mom wouldn't be able to dye her hair anymore and it would eventually grow back to brown. (And she missed her mom, of course)
"Well, I think it looks fantastic. And if you want that effect again, I'm pretty sure you can find some elixirs at Slurps 'n Burps. Maybe you'll be able to find a way to make it permanent" he said, as if he read her mind.
"Thanks"
"Now don't freak out when I say this, but your body needs to detox. Here, drink this" Elwin said. He handed a bottle of youth to her and she drank the sweet water in one sip. He handed her another one and she drank it just as quick. She could feel it coursing through her body.
"Well, good to meet you. I'm sure I'll see you again soon" Elwin said. Then Tess left the room to find Sophie standing outside the door waiting for her.
"Come on. Let's go to the guest room. We'll be sleeping there tonight. Alden and Della suggested that I stay with you. We can all sleep in the main room though and have a 'sleepover'" Sophie said with finger quotes around sleepover.
"Yeah, let's sleep in the main room. You guys can get to know me better" Tess said.
"Great. Let's go tell the others. Follow me, you can't really get around this place unless you live here or have a photographic memory like me" Sophie said.
"I have a photographic memory" Tess said. "Do you think I could be a Black Swan project?" She asked.
"How do you know about projects?" Sophie asked.
Busted
"Okay, you can't tell anyone this. There was a book written about your life. It started when Fitz found you in that museum. Seriously, ask me anything about your life" Tess said.
"Okay. Who came with me when I went to the Black Swan hideout?" Sophie asked.
"Easy one. Keefe and Silveny" Tess said.
"What was my next door neighbors name?" Sophie asked.
"Mr. Forkle. Give me a hard one this time" Tess said.
"What dinosaur was I looking at when I met Fitz?" Sophie asked. She had a smug look that seemed to say "I stumped you this time" but she didn't stump Tess.
"Albertosaurus. That's also the reason you got him a dinosaur figurine at the end of midterms. It was a thanks for showing you what dinosaurs really look like. Am I wrong?" Tess asked, looking just as smug. Sophie now looked shocked and her mouth was hanging open.
"So, there's really a book about my life?" Sophie asked.
"Yep. I have them in my backpack" Tess said, feeling guilty for telling.
"You have them with you? What are they called?" Sophie asked.
"The series is called Keeper Of The Lost Cities. The first one is about you adjusting to the Lost Cities, meeting everyone, finding out you're a project of the Black Swan, the midterms, the kidnapping and everything in between. The second book is called Exile, that one is mostly about....uh....Alden. And his breaking. I actually cried reading it. It's also when you find Silveny and train her. The third one is called Everblaze. That's the one where Fitz gets past your blocking, Fintan's healing, his Everblaze attack, the 'Dimitar Incident', the ability restrictor, you learning that Jolie was in the Black Swan, Brant's attack on you and Dex and you guys deciding to join the Black Swan. The final one is called Neverseen. You guys are in the Black Swan and defeat the Neverseen. Now you're here. You're fourteen now right?" Tess asked.
"Uh yeah. So, you know about everything?" Sophie asked. Tess nodded.
"How old are you?" Sophie asked.
"Fourteen" Tess said.
"So, since you've been reading the books and know everything about my life, you must know about the other guys and Biana. Which of the guys would you go out with?" Sophie asked.
This time, Tess looked around for people. "Dex" she whispered. Sophie's eyes widened.
"Really? I'm sure it won't be hard to win him over" Sophie said. They both giggled. "Yeah, Keefe is actually my boyfriend. We're just waiting for the matchmakers to declare it official"
"You guys are definitely a good match. I actually shipped you guys together. Where's my bag?" Tess asked.
"In the spare room. I'll go get it. You head to the main room, okay?" Sophie asked. Tess nodded, then headed in the opposite direction from Sophie.
She passed fountains, walked down different hallways, and finally found the main room. She heard laughing and decided to hide and listen in. They would never find out. Tess vanished then walked in the room.
"So, opinions on Tess?" Fitz asked.
"I think she's awesome! And she has so much experience with technology" Dex said.
"I'm still deciding. She seems cool though" Keefe said.
"I'm pretty sure I could dazzle her up. She may need my help learning the Elvin style. Otherwise she's great!" Biana said.
"I don't feel the way I did when I met Sophie, but I can tell she's special" Fitz said looking at the ground.
Tess ran out of the room and unvanished. She walked back in with a smirk on her face.
"Hey guys. What are you talking about?" She asked.
"Oh nothing. We wanted to get to know you" Biana said. She had a smile on her face. Tess kept her smirk. She noticed Keefe felt curious.
"Yeah. What are the sleeping arrangements?" Fitz asked.
"We're all sleeping in the main room" Tess said.
"Oh a sleepover! Yay!" Biana said. Tess rolled her eyes and smiled.
Sophie walked into the room and handed Tess her backpack. It was hard not to take out the books and spill everything she knew. It was also hard not to fangirl like she always did in the Forbidden Cities. She would have never thought that she would ever meet the characters of her favorite book. She definitely had dreams about meeting them, but never thought it would actually happen. They were just fictional characters. Now they're real. They're standing right in front of her, asking her questions about where in Everglen she would sleep. Biana squealing that they would all sleep in the main room together. Keefe bing curious about her and wanting to know more. It was all surreal. It was extremely hard not to yell out that she ships Keefe and Sophie together. Thinking about all of this made her head feel really hot and she knew she would blow sparks if she didn't stop, so she decided to start a light show.
"How would you guys like to see a light show?" Tess asked. Their faces lit up. Tess held out her hand and let all of the energy seep out of her in the form of light. It was like a firework show. She had never made anything so beautiful in her life, even when she was using her abilities. Then she had an idea. Maybe she could mix her powers as a guster with the light to create a light tornado. She pulled the energy within her to will the light to twirl. Then she felt a pull in her brain begging to be released. She obeyed the command and the light swirled around the room at her will. Then, she realized what happened. She just used a brain push. The thought of that distracted her from the light and the wind and it went berserk. Spinning around the room at full speed. She quickly snapped out of her thoughts and tried to control the light tornado, but no luck. It span around the room and Tess tried to stop it. She was tired from the brain push but managed to stop the tornado. Sparks flew everywhere and exploded in mid-air. She saw the damage that was done. A vase of flowers had shattered on the floor, a chair had been pushed into the wall and left a mark, and one corner of the shag carpet was on fire.
"I'm so sorry guys. I don't know what happened. I lost control of the tornado when I used a brain push" Tess said. Then she realized what she said. Everyone's jaws dropped except for Sophie, who knew her secret.
"How do you know what a brain push is, and how did you do it?" Keefe asked. Tess bit her lip and tried to find a way to explain when Alden and Della ran into the room.
"What happened?" Della asked, walking over to the corner of the carpet to try to stomp the fire out.
"Uh, I may have tried to use my flasher ability and my guster ability at the same time and created a light tornado that exploded..." Tess said, guiltily. Alden laughed, which made Tess feel less guilty.
"Well, I guess this is why we need to get you into Foxfire immediately" Alden said. He smiled at Tess then picked up the remnants of the shattered vase on the floor. Tess moved the chair with telekinesis and looked at the mark on the wall. There was no dent, but it could be hard to get rid of.
"Don't worry about the wall. That can be fixed up easily" Alden said.
Tess didn't exactly believe it, but she tried her best to look like she did. She saw Keefe cock his eyebrow at her and she transmitted to him, please just go with it. I basically just broke part of Everglen, I don't need to be outed on my doubts.
With that, Keefe returned to normal with his smirk, but he whispered in her ear, "Open your mind to mine" Tess did as instructed and opened her mind to his thoughts. It was an overwhelming blur of emotions.
What?
I want to know what's wrong. I can feel your worry and dread. Tell me whats wrong because I know you're hiding something. It's a little strange how you have all of the abilities except-
"What are you two doing?" Dex asked. "You're talking in his mind. What are you talking about?"
"Nothing" Keefe said. He smirked.
"And you call me mysterious" Sophie said. She scoffed.
"Hey, aren't I allowed to have my secrets?" Keefe asked. Then the subject was dropped. They all walked out of the main room and Keefe wrote on a piece of paper, We will continue the conversation later. Tess tried not to freak out.
