Chapter Twenty-Seven
Mark crawled underground in a tunnel created by Conner. His entire body was covered with dirt that kept flying in his face from Will, who was crawling in front of them. It was like something a termite would create in a long line with dirt all over the place.
"This is so weird," Will remarked. "It's like those tubes in a playground."
Will was the eyes in this whole tunnel situation. They had driven a car over, but it died halfway to town, so they had to go with the secret process Zane wanted them to do by creating secret tunnels, which could work for fleeing the scene quickly.
"Not exactly," Conner muttered. "It's just like digging a regular hole in the ground."
Conner stopped to crouch slightly, placing both hands on top of the tunnel. The whole ground caved on top of him, but he forcefully pulled himself out of the hole.
Will stayed put for a moment before closing his eyes. "Eden's going to be using all those moves when she fought Luke."
"Why not Jason and Greyson?" Emma panicked, whirling around to look at Will. "Unless they changed their plan or something,"
"There are missiles," Will stated.
Mark pushed Emma up to the surface, rolling slightly but staring down at Will in the hole.
Mark had no idea how someone would be able to get missiles. Those would be something stored at an army base unless they secretly had some stored at the power plant.
"They're probably from Bella's isolation cabin she stayed at," Nevaeh chimed in.
"We could just ride the missiles and then jump off like a rocket," Will explained.
The rest of them crawled out from behind a backroad that still had some houses intact. Most of the trees were burned or tilted at an angle that wasn't the easiest hiding spot. They hid under one of the houses that was only half burned at the siding, seeing part of the plaza.
"I'm glad I didn't grow up here," Will stated, sticking out his tongue. "I'm from Vancouver. I'm an abandoned teen like Bryce, Mia, and Eden. Like they don't acknowledge our birthdays or anything. Once, Mia got a card, and it said her parents hated her on her birthday. That's how the outside world will see us when we're out of here."
There were no longer just some kids who went to school or played sports. He's had to bury and carry bodies of people who had died, or even fish for them, when the town split happened.
"I have access to my parents' bank account, but they don't know. I've crashed my father's investment by buying drugs and alcohol when I was at Uden. You have to do a lot of running as a delinquent. Okay, let's spy!" Will cheered.
They crept past the destroyed houses and toward a road closer to the plaza. Conner drilled himself in the ground that slowly went deeper and deeper. Mark looked down the dark hole as Nevaeh pointed a small flashlight.
"So, we're army crawling through this hole?" Emma asked. "And hope we don't break a bone."
James went in first, using the walls to slowly slide himself down. Mark held the gun in his hand as Nevaeh and Will did the same thing, except when Emma did it, her hand slipped halfway and ended up screaming.
Mark used one hand and his feet to help him down the deep hole. His arms and legs both felt wobbly, as if he felt he'd fall at any moment. When he reached the bottom, Conner was in front, with Will behind him.
"Okay, so it doesn't look like it's far, but ten meters right," Will called, his voice echoing in the tunnel.
Conner used his melting power, travelling faster than all of them combined. He'd stop at one point to wait for them to come for Will's next direction.
"I really hope we don't find any bodies," Nevaeh shivered.
Mark wasn't looking forward to them finding any human remains. He has buried many bodies, but he knew this location wasn't going to have them. Most of them were either in the park or behind the church.
"Left five meters," Will called.
They all crawled on their hands and knees, with mud sticking all over their clothes and bodies. It was narrow as Nevaeh pointed the flashlight on her head, guiding a light.
"Two meters straight, then we should be there," Will firmed.
Mark knew it was quick, but he didn't believe it was that fast.
"Stop!" Will called.
"Ready, Mark?" James asked. He nodded and crept around them.
Conner stared at him before placing his hand over his head. When it showed the plaza, mud fell as he crept while pointing the gun out. The first thing he saw from a distance was Jason shooting his burning blue light at Ashley, as she wore a feral grin. He then saw around followers, but they did not look like the humans they should be. They were pure purple, like the substance that was in the ditch.
Mark angled the gun as the followers weren't disappearing. He shot the bullet directly at her chest, but she turned, and it struck the side of her neck. He heard Ashley's scream from where they were, seeing some of those overwhelming followers disappear.
"I think powers aren't working," he ducked down and whispered.
James and Nevaeh peeked up, seeing the scene of more people arriving to help.
"I don't know where the missiles are," Mark said.
"You were right, Will," James gasped.
Will stared perplexed as they all looked up from the hole.
The missile was aimed at Ashley and was about to collide with her before someone jumped off of it. It created a huge explosion, as they all were covered in the hole.
"Did Ashley forget about them or something?" James asked.
"Wait, if Will was right about someone riding a missile, would it be Greyson controlling it?" James then seemed to know.
Will placed a hand over his mouth to contain his laughter.
"Eden," Emma gasped.
She looked up as Mark slowly looked up to see Eden with half her face bloodied. Her hair had been windblown, and some blood was dripping down her right arm, but she wore an innocent smile.
"I'll fight with them," Emma said firmly, nodding her head.
Mark stepped up, holding the range gun at his side. "Let's all win this," he said, turning back to look at those still in the hole. However, he felt his gun snatched from him, which startled him to see Eden wearing a devious grin.
"This is how you shoot," she said, holding the gun into position perfectly. She closed an eye, shooting it directly into Ashley's chest.
This entire situation was crazy watching Eden handle the gun easily, shooting multiple times at Ashley, who was barely taking any damage.
"What are they?" Emma panicked, placing a hand on Eden's bloody head.
Eden shrugged, her gaze still fixated on her. The plaza was filled with flames as the light source, while she pushed Emma's hand away.
"Freak powers seem useless on them. Ashley forgot about her missiles," Eden said breathlessly before rushing off to shoot the gun multiple times.
Mark watched her run off as the rest of them climbed out of the hole.
"Ashley must've rigged something, so we can't use any of our abilities. This means using whatever you can to stop that thing," James explained.
Mark took out a knife from his back pocket. "We'll go where they have the most struggling," he said. "Looks like that is left."
All of them ran left, carrying both weapons in their hands and in themselves.
Jason didn't think it was humanly possible to ride on a missile, but he stand corrected. He had tried to slide up the missile before Ashley fried, but there was a slight problem. Ashley had presented the hidden surprise that all of those followers were nothing but bodies of purple substance. So, one blow to the head set them all free. However, she had left the other missile unattended for Eden to light and Greyson to control.
"You're lucky those bullets did damage, Jason. However, my followers don't die that easily," Ashley stated, picking at the bullet in her neck. It didn't even seem to weaken her, except some of her movements were more slowed.
Jason fired his blue light at Ashley, who sent those followers running at him. There was a golden light that struck three of them, as Ashley's smile faltered into displeasure.
"Healer," Ashley spat. "You still have that golden light that goddess has. However, I don't care."
In a flash, Jason watched Eden spring quickly to kick Ashley straight in the jaw. She went soaring to the ground, while Eden landed gracefully.
"Aren't you a Catholic freak? Shouldn't your nature be kinder to a god?" Ashley sneered.
Eden held the gun pointed at Ashley's forehead. "According to a passage by James, desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask."
"Are you crazy? I've asked, and people have given," Ashley snarled. "You pathetic humans are just wanting to die. Both of you haven't even killed a person."
Jason didn't know if that was exactly true because he had killed followers multiple times, who were people that were considered already dead.
Eden laughed. "I have killed. What are you talking about? I drugged three people because they tried using me for sexual benefit. This happened when I was twelve."
At this point, Jason wasn't surprised Eden had killed someone. She always had an uncaring personality since she no longer put that facade up by having multiple fights with Luke.
"Hah, what an idiotic human," Ashley started. "Do you really think I'd believe such foolish lies?"
Eden leaped and shot her in the back of the neck. Ashley's body soared to the other side of the plaza, where Angel and Greyson stood. All of this was insane, but he had to focus on what was in front of him.
Ashley went charging at them, stumbling over her own feet. From the ruins of the church, Divina peered from behind with a grin. Jason didn't know how that power worked, but he could only imagine it was deadly.
"Jason, watch out!" James cried out.
He turned to get punched to the ground by those purple followers. They weren't even people; they were human-shaped with bodies of pure purple. He felt another blow to the head as he held a hand up to shoot, but someone beat him.
The purple person was shot in the head, causing the entire thing to fall into a pile of purple goo.
"Do you think I'm all stupid at things?" Mia laughed, attempting to pull him to his feet.
James came running over with Mallory, looking around the wide space. Ashley had been dealing with Angel and Greyson, plus the added help of shooting or stabbing.
"Your face looks awful! You barely look like you can stand!" Mallory panicked, holding a pistol in her hand.
Jason shook his head because he still had to fight. This whole situation wasn't just about fighting to get out of this place, but for Bella. She lost her life and wanted him to fight, which is exactly what he was going to do.
"No, we're fighting that thing until they are ready," he said. "Plus, insane Eden is having the time of her life."
From where he stood, the fire glowed with those purple followers all over. Eden kept shooting or stabbing, excitement glowing in her eyes. This was different from when Esme got excited about fighting.
"There were a couple of us that piled up," James stated, looking at the crowds of people fighting. "We'll do what those dead couldn't."
It surprised him, but he's right. People are dead from Ashley, such as Esme, Jade, and Stick. Many died from the storm or even from the holes that were created. That thing in front of them needed to stop.
"Let's go," Jason said as he grabbed the knife from his pocket.
Those followers take more damage from weapons than power. However, those followers cause greater pain, such as punching or twisting body parts. They split, as Jason went rushing to where Ashley was. She had bared her teeth at Emma, who held her palms out. Jason shot his light from behind, which she seemed to fail to notice.
Ashley screamed as he felt himself being punched in the back of the head, flying toward Angel. He had blood dripping down his cheek as Jason wobbly tried to stand. He felt pressure on his back and cried out in pain. The source of pain vanished as he tried to lift himself. Angel tried to help him stand, but he appeared just as injured.
Greyson and Emma kept their focus on Ashley, who glared at the two of them. He felt another hand helping him to his feet, which appeared to be Nevaeh's. She smirked at him before looking over her shoulder for followers.
"You will end up dead in your condition," Nevaeh yelled over the loud shooting and screaming. "Angel can keep helping, so stick to stabbing."
Angel nodded as Nevaeh dragged him to his feet. She shot one of those followers as he tried to steady himself. He wanted to sit down and take a nap, but he couldn't do that with everything going on around him.
When he looked over, he spotted Cassandra's furious expression at the sight. They had to hide because Ashley would send those followers after them if they didn't. He gulped because they were in the final stages of everything.
"Soldier!" Nevaeh called. "This is actually war. We leave Cassandra and the insane Divina to commence their own skills. Do I have to remind you that you can't control everything? I hear your thoughts of both stopping your insane stepsister and not wanting to see Bella's body disappear."
Jason felt his body flinch at the mention of Bella because everyone has called her Divina ever since. It brought a rush of memories back as they were crouching behind a destroyed car, attempting to avoid being found by those purple creations.
"Didn't that golden girl want you to be rational?" Nevaeh asked, smirking, as she looked over her shoulder for followers.
Bella wanted her to be rational when it comes to fighting for everything instead of hanging back and doing nothing.
"You guys suck at hide-and-seek," Bryce started, standing with a hand on his hip. "I'm pretty sure we're in the middle of death, but I could be wrong. Let's go, soldier."
Jason wobbly stood up and spotted all the people fighting, but something he remembered from the day he burned off Luke's arm. Eden held a golf club in her hand like a bat. He watched her slam it on one of the followers, causing it to disappear.
"This bring back some memories?" Eden asked, wearing her innocent smile. "Will found me one to use."
"Their death is soon," Nevaeh stated. "While we're being recorded for shooting guns and acting manic."
"When this bubble falls, we'll be stumbling to see the world that will fear us. The one us delinquents are used to living," Bryce breezed, throwing a knife at a follower.
"Are you ready to be charged? Do probation? Be witnesses in court trials? Or better yet, be arrested," Eden said.
That's the world they would walk out into. One in which laws still mattered. How many charges could they lay on them? Jason could count many things, including mayhem on two accounts. However, Maverick and Luke were both dead.
"Wait, actually? I'd rather be more ambushed with questions than think about being locked up," Nevaeh said.
"They want the gossip, but they can't have us survivors out running. If we have our powers after this, we'll definitely be arrested," Bryce stated with a smirk.
Would they still? Some developed the powers before, which Jason assumed when Divina and Ashley hit Earth. That could be possible, or they'll have these powers forever.
"Let's go," Jason mumbled, gripping the knife in his hand.
They went back to the show of followers striking bodies, but they all needed to fight. All of them wanted freedom from everything that happened here. How did it go from missing parents, to holes in the streets or even burning buildings? He watched his stepsister slowly grow into someone else. Not the kind girl he knew, but a heartless monster.
Jason knew that the end was coming and the questions about why his mother gave up Greyson. That's one unanswered question, but he had to focus to make sure he made it out alive.
Cassandra stared at the chaos unfolding while Divina had a devious grin. She wanted all this chaos to end, but she didn't want to die either. However, she would die happily because her parents would be safe.
"Ready to kill God?" Divina asked deviously, reaching her hand out.
Cassandra nodded as they both laced their hands. All around, that darkened sky shot bright light, as she could physically feel her hair moving. They were in their circle of bright lights, but people around them still fought. She still heard screaming and yelling, but only Ashley could see the mask they hid behind.
Those around her saw them standing with closed eyes and laced hands. However, around them were their powers connecting. She used her opposite hand to hover them in the air, floating as the power charged inside.
"Even if you try to destroy those, you can't because you know that's God's true power," Divina yelled.
God's true powers have always been about the creation of some type of follower. Using dead slaves was powerful because the army could just keep growing, but purple followers were limited. They didn't have a mind of their own, but they were ordered.
"I'm checking," she spat.
Cassandra spotted where that amusement came from on Divina's face, and it was because Ashley saw them. Her face had blood on it, but she had wide eyes at them.
"Isn't it quite amusing? Are you ready to die?" Divina yelled, laughing.
Ashley pointed a finger at them, while Greyson sent her flying with an invisible force into a burning bush. Cassandra smiled because she knew he was still holding his ground.
"Stop cowering on me, then!" Ashley yelled.
"How are we cowering?" Divina's taunted.
Cindy shot Ashley with an arrow directly in the eye. She was being ambushed by all the freaks, because that's what she advised.
"Using more followers to do your dirty work while failing? I don't see us running away, do you?" Divina taunted.
Ashley aimed a palm at them. There was a purple laser that shot out, but it shot right back and burned her.
Cassandra felt a click in her mind; she knew what it meant. Divina's eyes glowed with a passion that started with murder. She stuck out her palm as they went flying at Ashley, as Divina kicked her hard in the forehead. She went flying to the ground as those purple followers all vanished away.
They stood facing the thing that created this mess. It wasn't just god and goddess; it was her as well, because she ruined all of Ashley's plans. Since the day she stopped the storm as a fetus, everything was game over.
"Who knew it'd come this early? Honestly, I've been having fun," Divina taunted. "Because of your behaviour, all your idiotic plans came crashing down, and you assumed you'd walk out of this world? It looks like that failed."
The three of them were surrounded by their own orange bubble, as people on the outside watched. Cassandra could see her parents both injured, along with many others. She didn't feel any death, but she felt injuries that Emma and Hanna couldn't all heal.
"What's this?" Ashley barked, her teeth gritted.
"This is your deathbed while you get a pretty show for the world to see," Divina snarled.
Ashley tried to bust her way out, but it didn't work. "Then why aren't you doing it in the open? Don't you want onlookers to see it?" she snarled.
Divina yanked her ear and grabbed her crispy cheeks forcefully. Ashley screamed as Cassandra looked over at her with knitted brows. She could see from the outside that people were watching the scene. Not those stuck in this chaotic place, but adults with cameras. She wasn't sure if this moment should be recorded, but she'd shine bright like a star.
"It's not powerful enough that way," Divina snarled.
Cassandra set her palm facing the back of Ashley's head.
Divina's palm was right in Ashley's face, while the bubble around the three started to glow white. It popped, sending them flying into the sky. There was a bright golden light that shone around them, making her body hot. That light was produced from her palms, as a beam of golden light kept them floating in the air. It surrounded them, as Cassandra put one palm over the other.
"What's happening?" Ashley exclaimed as her legs were slowly melting away.
Cassandra focused on her powers as she spotted part of Divina's face was melting away.
"We're melting you away, God!" Divina laughed.
The golden light wrapped around the three of them. People around them would call it an explosion, but they didn't know anything.
Cassandra raised one of her palms to point to the sky as her own light beamed down on all of them. She could feel her own body fading away on its own, as her body felt numb.
"You're done for!" Cassandra yelled, tears streaming down her cheeks.
She couldn't save herself since she was born in a cold change room. That was one of the first things she knew. She knew that stopping Ashley would mean death, so she'd willingly carry out that act. If her parents and the people she met were safe, then she was fine with it.
Cassandra watched Bella Foster's body finally start to fade away. She didn't know her well but was willing to allow Divina access to her body. One that has been bloody with a devious smile that never seems to leave.
She heard Ashley's bloody screams as she watched her body burn into ash. However, her own body did as well, seeing her fingers fade away. With a scream, all the light around the sky glowed with mixes of yellow and white as the light hit the bubble all over. She watched the last bit of Ashley burn away as she used the last of her own power to set off fireworks to celebrate.
Cassandra saw part of the bubble pop naturally as her body turned to nothing but ash. She got to help her parents be free, along with those around. All she could hope for was their future being filled with happiness.
Bella stood near the crumbled building where the pharmacy would have been. She watched her own body burn, along with Ashley and Cassandra. It was almost remarkable that all of this chaos was over.
She wondered if she could move around like this ghost or transparent figure was a mere coincidence. It could be to finally see her own body burn like karma or the aftermath of what she isn't going to experience in life anymore.
In that moment, she found herself transported back to the boxed area she had been in. She looked over, seeing Cassandra with her face wet with tears. Her face then turned into a smile, holding out her hand.
"Let's go," Cassandra's voice quivered.
"I guess life isn't perfect," Bella said, looking at the glowing fireworks on the outside. "Even when you assume you can achieve it."
She could see Jason stumbling with injuries. He was staring at the sky like most were, frozen in place. Maybe time stopped, but she could still see the popping of the fireworks on the outside.
"I hope you obtain happiness, Jason," she whispered, turning back to Cassandra. "Thank you for everything."
Bella grabbed Cassandra's hand, with both of them disappearing in a bright light. She knew it was the true ending and not just the sacrifice to leave her alone. The girl who thought she might obtain the perfect life finally vanished.
The end of Ashley, Divina, Bella, and Cassandra has finally arrived. With that in mind, it means they're free! Still, I'm going to miss writing Cassandra and Bella...
