Chapter Thirty-Four
In a span of five months, there were interviews, reports, and even a Netflix original series in the works about the Simcoe tragedy, as they call it.
The condo building was built in an open space near large buildings. Before you entered, it was entirely glass windows with grey and white siding on the building. There were balconies in each unit, all of which were black. There was a Starbucks and some small shops nearby.
Although her parents wanted her back, Nevaeh wanted to live in one of these places.
"Whoa!" Will gasped.
They entered the building that had a shiny black floor with a large black front desk up front. Behind the desk was a rock wall that had water streaming down it slowly. It had grey walls, all with glowing lights on the side, with two black velvet sofas on either side.
Nevaeh raced down the right hallway, where the indoor pool was located. It had a large glass door that she pushed open. The deck was a dark grey, bordered around the long pool that reflected four windows on the left side that overlooked part of the city.
On the right side was a square hot tub that had a small waterfall flowing into it that had glowing blue lights. One thing she noticed in a supply closet in the corner made her laugh.
"You got pool noodles and floaties?"
Mia rushed to grab one from the supply closet that had some beach balls.
"We have a pool cleaner that will check levels," River stated. "There will be an emergency lifeguard if needed."
This was like being in a water park or a fancy hotel that people dream of going to.
River left as Nevaeh scurried behind with the number of those staying. One thing that Nevaeh was quite surprised about was Cindy, because her parents wanted her to come back desperately.
Jason, Greyson, and Scarlett she wasn't surprised about, along with some other Uden students. People like Preston and James were staying.
Emma went back with her father but would visit. The same went for Zane, Mallory, Angel, and others who had helped. Some had considered it, but most had become undecided.
The next door was a library with a dark brown desk and walls of books on high shelves. There were circular tables with comfy white chairs that went around each with a small plant in the middle. Nearby, there were a few blue sofas near long coffee tables.
"It's for studying and stuff since we'll have to focus on grades and—" River said awkwardly.
"Highlighter, most of us didn't care about our grades," Mia remarked.
"It could be for just wanting to go somewhere quiet," River rushed out.
They left that room and went into the main lobby, where there were two silver elevators.
"So, the second floor is where we can eat as a group. We all do have our own kitchens, depending on room sizes," River started.
The crackheads went up the stairs while some others waited. It appeared to be a normal elevator, but the second floor made her eyes widen. It was a wide room where tables sat in different areas, while one long table dined in the middle. It had a fireplace near the left-side area, where there was another long table with many chairs.
The walls were silver, with wide windows through which you could see rushing cars in the busy city. On the right side was more of the kitchen, with a double stove and a large countertop.
"We'd have someone cook the food because I don't really want to have the place burn down," River eyed Eden when he said this.
"You honestly think I'd burn this place down? First of all, this would be hard to burn, and I never go for big buildings unless they have a reason to be burned," Eden said flatly.
"Okay... Due to robbers and such, each person will get an electronic card to get into the building and the condos. They range from a single room to multiple people," River stated. "You can pick which floors you want and with whom you want to room with."
Nevaeh wasn't exactly sure what she wanted to do herself. It would be fun to bunk with people, but she had to consider the relationships of this situation.
"No way I'm sharing with you two," Bryce said while pointing at Will and Mia. "Get unhinged Eden so she'll knock some sense into you."
They both sputtered but nagged. Nevaeh knew why, because those two were friends with benefits, and they'd be insane to bunk with in the first place.
Greyson and Scarlett would be a no-brainer that they'd share a room. The same with the soldier being by himself, along with some others.
Nevaeh turned to Cindy, who had knitted her eyebrows. "Let's bunk with Highlighter," Nevaeh said.
"Sure," Cindy said flatly.
Nevaeh smiled because she already knew to bunk with River. It wasn't for the sake of dating, but she already knew he'd felt alone since she found him freezing cold in the snow.
"You can pick your floors, but they are mainly all the same," River said.
Greyson butted his way first. Even if he had been trying to change, he would get first picks of whatever they were choosing for rooms. If Nevaeh guessed, it would be the biggest single-bed room unless the surprise came with a two-bed unit.
"The biggest single unit," Greyson stated.
"That's either the fifth or sixth floor," River stated.
"Sixth," Scarlett stated with a smirk.
Well, Nevaeh knew what those two would be doing, so it'd be best to not get a room near them.
"It's room sixty-two," River stated as he handed them a key.
Scarlett took the card and the small suitcase of clothes they actually had from staying at the hospital for some of those months.
Nevaeh watched others pick rooms, as most either did third or second floor to be close to the food. Since many didn't want to go to their parents, while some were just rooms if they wanted to stay the weekend without payment.
However, parents could visit, but they'd have to ring and wait. They could go inside, but they couldn't stay more than one night, or there was a fee.
It wasn't to keep them out or be rude, but people chose to be away from their parents for a reason. Plus, the reason for parents to pull the route of delinquent activity that some people pulled.
"Ready, Highlighter?" Nevaeh asked.
River finished handing the last of the cards to those who were actually staying. He tilted his head as Nevaeh jerked a thumb at Cindy, who was staring out the window.
"Wait, I thought you wanted your own room?" he asked.
Nevaeh placed her hands on her hips with a smirk. "I decided against it. It's not going to be easy to overcome everything," she said.
They have put everyone into therapy, both in clinics and hospitals, where you have to openly admit you've seen and heard things you shouldn't. Some have been worse than others. People who were more exposed, such as Emma, who has panic attacks when she sees someone vomit.
Nobody has turned to drugs or alcohol for coping that she knows of. It's still early, but she's had nightmares herself. Ones where Ashley kills her instead of Jade and Esme when she saw their dead bodies.
There are the ones where the storm is still present, but they don't have a mask or anything to protect them. All of them burn away like fried chicken, which leaves them trembling and dead.
Nevaeh thought she'd be fine with taking therapy and saying everything, but it made her unsettled at times. People have trigger objects, like Cindy, who has to run out of the room if gun shooting is involved in a movie.
"Ours is on the fourth," River stated.
Cindy looked over at them and rolled her suitcase to the elevator, where they had to scan a card.
All the rooms come with furniture, but they are allowed to add whatever they want. Some brought pictures or nothing because most lost everything.
Nevaeh opened the silver handle and dropped her jaw. It was huge, with a kitchen with dark brown cabinets and a fridge, stove, and microwave. The living room had a large flatscreen television and a long black couch. It had all the instalments of Netflix, Hulu, and other channels. There were three bedrooms that were medium-sized with a queen bed in each. It had two nightstands with a large closet in each.
All of it was completely outstanding. You'd think it was a house that some would stay in. It had three bathrooms, each with glass showers and a mirror that would glow when you pressed on it.
"This is insane," Cindy gasped. "It's like those fancy hotels you see movie stars live in."
"And no rent either," Nevaeh beamed.
They may be living a luxury most shouldn't be, but they'd still go to a regular high school or middle school. It depended, but they had made the choices with everything.
Netflix wanted to interview them about the series where they'd use actors. It was for the most involved that experienced a lot, such as Jason, Greyson, Scarlett, Emma, and Zane.
It was about knowing the substance or even who Ashley acted when she changed. Nevaeh had to talk about what she knew as well, because some of them didn't talk about other events like Cindy.
They couldn't do everything unless they found someone to play all the people that died. It'd be talking about Luke's noodle arm or even what Esme did at the hospital.
It's all draft work, but it'd be impossible to get everything spot-on. The power plant incident or even the storm stopping and causing. No, it'd be more about Emma's connection with Divina or who blew up Uden Academy.
Nevaeh placed her things in one of the rooms, sitting on one of the high bar stools, looking at the cloudy sky from a distance. There were many thoughts running through her head about everything, including that Netflix show.
"You know, that Netflix series about us will be wrong," Nevaeh stated as Cindy looked at her. She had placed her own things in her room and just looked around the condo."The storm, Ilya's overdose, every secret that happened at Uden."
"Even if this all seems over, I still feel fear," Cindy started, walking near the window near the sofa."If those followers are magically going to pop up, or even Luke in general. It's just how Cassandra randomly comes with those insane fallen stars."
Ashley and Divina, both insane in their own way of torturing or murdering. However, Cassandra was the interference of both of their plans because she posed a threat to both of them.
"None of us will truly get over this. People will drink, and someone has already committed suicide after we were free. I think that's one reason why we shouldn't all be alone," Nevaeh stated.
Hanna had told them about PTSD. Some would have it worse than others, especially with experiences. People are still grieving over the fact that people died. It's something they push away until it unloads like a waterfall.
"Jason is already grieving, and Emma has Esme and Jade's deaths," Cindy said, still not looking at her.
River came striding into the room, looking back and forth in question. "They uploaded pictures," he said.
"They are trying to rebuild it?" Cindy asked.
River opened his own laptop, scrolling through some articles on Twitter to find the trending tweet about it. The once-destroyed highway was partly repaired. They took out the whole highway in general due to the damage from being uneven and missing parts of the road.
"They want to build a McDonald's," River stated.
They wanted to change from Burger King to McDonald's? Would people even go there in the first place? It's not like there's sightseeing, unless you count a giant hole in the power plant or a burned town.
"Did you hear some of the stories that people have tried moving but literally left because of the damage?" Nevaeh inquired, scrolling through her own phone of pictures on social media.
Old residences had tried moving back to where their houses would have been, but most were ash. They've had construction workers in and out to try and repair the damage from the burned buildings.
"Nobody wants to live where a chemical is created that destroys a whole town. The whole pharmacy got sued and fired," Cindy remarked.
Everything has gone to shambles ever since the whole deal was settled. They kept them out of school, but they did some online schooling until they relocated to a new high school, where they will be enrolled.
It was hard because Uden and Simcoe High taught differently. They had the same grade levels, but Uden apparently didn't have art for everyone since people threw paint.
They wanted more focus on the therapy of opening up and seeing if wounds healed wrongly. How scars were on bodies or those that had broken bones or arms that needed weeks of rehabilitation.
There was a loud slamming on the door as River sighed, walking over to see braincell one and braincell two.
"Let's order pizza!" Mia whined while wearing sunglasses and a bucket hat. She was waving her phone up and down as if she was expecting them to see the list.
"And chicken wings, nachos, and alcohol," Will urged. He was dressed in shorts and a button-up short-sleeve shirt as if he were expecting to leave for Hawaii.
"Wait, we need some pot brownies as a side," Mia said.
These were two people who could get a party started anywhere.
"Um, we aren't doing pot brownies. That's your own thing," River said awkwardly. "We can have alcohol, but if we do, nobody can go out that's drunk."
"I'll be high before the party starts, but get some good vodka," Mia said, sticking out her tongue.
Who could even get them the alcohol? Then again, everything would be delivered instead of picked up. It would be insane in general, because some of them staying here are ranging from grade six through eleven.
That's right, she'd be entering the eleventh grade. None of them had a previous year of school because of everything that happened. Had it really been that long in there?
"Well, it looks like we're planning a party," River sighed.
This would be a natural high school party that the crackheads would crash. Where punch would probably be spiked in secret or different desserts they probably stole from a bakery.
"Let's make some calls for those that want to come," Nevaeh said slyly.
She knew more would want to party and see people. Even if they were haunted, they could forget about what had happened during those months.
"They're basically hosting a high school party," Scarlett called from the bathroom.
"Party Culture all over again," Greyson said.
Scarlett walked out of the bathroom with both hands on her hips. The two of them were getting ready for a welcome celebration party for moving in.
"I know we're changing, but the way I used to dress hasn't," Scarlett sighed. She wore shorts and a top that exposed her whole stomach, tossing mascara around in her hand. "American Eagle looks good on you."
"Better than a gym tee to reform camp," he remarked.
These would be the overall months they'd be shipped to reform camp to read and learn about the Bible.
"And it's not to flash off other guys. Even though I'll probably get those stares from some that live here," Scarlett said.
She caressed his cheek as he leaned in to kiss her. It wasn't Scarlett pushing away or desperate to make love that it turned to one point.
Slow steps to understanding a proper and healthy relationship, not scheming to use someone even though there are urges at times. She pulled back to stare at him with a smile. She still had her snarky comments at times, but they've been working better as people.
"Well, we should probably go down, or all the pizza will be gone," she remarked, smirking. She turned on her heel to slip on some sandals.
After their wounds started to heal, they sent them all to a hotel to stay. The first time, they stayed for a bit before Mia and Will got them all kicked out. It didn't help either that Eden threatened the manager that they called the police on her.
Then there was therapy, which Greyson doesn't exactly like. It feels weird being vulnerable to people other than Scarlett about his feelings about Heather and his adoptive parents.
It's not like he'll ever forgive Heather or tell his adoptive parents he misses them. No, but then they ask about the traumatic memories in that bubble. That one left his mind blank before he thought about the many things that made him feel terror.
When they got downstairs, it wasn't exactly what you expect a normal high school party to be. You'd assume it was in someone's yard or house, but the lights were dim with rows of snacks and alcohol.
"Guess River knew we wanted to forget everything," Scarlett remarked.
Mallory came rushing toward them without tripping. "Look!" she exclaimed, holding up a potato in her hand.
Greyson remembered when he had seen a kitchen with black smoke and potatoes covering part of the room.
"You going to blow up another microwave?" Scarlett snarked.
"No, I learned how to cook it! The potato is cooked because I don't like pizza," Mallory rambled.
Greyson looked around to see who had gone through the whole chaotic experience. Some with cups, laughing, or sitting in chairs eating food.
He went toward the table to grab a plate to scan the pizzas, such as just cheese or meat lovers. He picked two with cheese but turned to meet eyes with Nevaeh.
"Yes?" he asked and turned to grab some mozzarella sticks that had come from some restaurant.
"So, when am I going to see that proposal?" Nevaeh asked.
"I'm not asking you to prom," Greyson said.
"No, not that proposal. I'm talking about when you propose to Scarlett," she whispered.
That was one thing he wasn't expecting to be approached about, especially because they were teenagers and weren't attending a high school.
"I'd keep it a secret," he said. He hadn't even known what school they were going to, where prom proposals aren't until grade twelve.
"See, Highlighter could literally help you with everything. Unless we get an actual job, but I don't think that's our thoughts right now," Nevaeh stated.
Greyson looked over at Scarlett, who drank alcohol, he assumed, talking to Will with an amused look. If anything, it was Will making a comment about how he was high and drunk.
"Well, I'll try and get soldier to party," Nevaeh sighed, walking away.
Greyson sighed and walked back to Scarlett as Will pointed at him. He seemed lost in thought for a moment before snapping his fingers.
"Want to get high?" he slurred.
Scarlett grabbed one of the mozzarella sticks and began eating it. She smirked as Greyson raised his eyebrows.
"It's so strange you aren't making so many snarky comments at him," Will said as he pointed at Scarlett.
"Oh, I still make some. I can't really say much right now because he looks quite handsome," Scarlett remarked.
Will twisted his mouth in thought. "See, I just like being high," he slurred, with a thumbs up.
Eden dragged Will away as he stumbled back, almost falling on the ground. He looked dazed, while Eden had her teeth gritted and a red face.
Scarlett turned to look at Greyson. "He did call me hot, but you can't throw him at a wall anymore," she remarked.
"That's the unfortunate part of not having these powers," he muttered.
There were many times he wanted to use his power. When he wanted to get something from across the room or down from a high shelf, it would have been easy, but it wasn't.
It wasn't just the supernatural powers; it was becoming accustomed to living normally. There was no hunting down food and drinks, which they had to figure out how to cook.
The same had been true with washing clothes, because he had never been taught that. Nobody had washed clothes in the bubble because they didn't know how to anymore.
He had to look it all up online to figure out how to sort it all out. It wasn't that everything could go together and stuffing it all at once.
Greyson threw out his empty plate as Scarlett wrapped her arms around his neck and leaned her body close.
"Do you want to stay here, or would you rather do our own thing?" she whispered.
Greyson looked back at her without saying anything at first. "I'd rather do our own thing," he said.
Music was blasting with some dancing or eating in the dining area in the condos. Some eyed them while others talked with others.
"And what would that be?" Scarlett asked with her famous smirk.
"Let's go to our place," he said with a grin.
Both headed back to their own condos and opened the doors. When they got inside, he took her in his arms and kissed her.
They stumbled their way to the couch, as he felt her hands trail up to remove his shirt, but he had to control himself.
He pulled back to look at her. "Not that yet," he whispered.
"Who knew you'd be the one stopping for once?" she mocked with raised eyebrows.
He sat on the couch, pulled down a fleece blanket, and wrapped it around them. She flicked on the television as she looked at him.
They acted clean, but there were still parts of themselves. It would be hard to clean up, but they had been connected since they had met.
When she pulled up Netflix, she stared but didn't know what to watch. He didn't know what to watch either, but she let out a sigh.
"I can't believe it's all true," she said.
"What is?" he asked.
She scrolled down the list of movies before turning to look at him. "The terror is over," she said.
Ashley's murder, or everything that happened near the end of it all. He would get terrified even if he wasn't one to often get scared.
She shut off the television and leaned over to kiss him with both her hands on his cheeks. The Bubble would always be in their minds, but the terror was finally over.
One more chapter and then it's over...
What was the saddest moment in the whole series?
