Chapter 6 - Mum

"Mum?" I asked. It was my mum.. I hadn't had contact with her for six years.

"Yeah, Hayley. It's me."

"Why are you calling?"

"I kept forgetting to call you about the scan copy you gave us.. You're pregnant?"

"Yeah.."

"Oh my god!"

"Twins," I told her as well.

"Twins? Wow. You and, um, your boyfriend will be busy with two of them!"

"By the way, his name is Calum. And we both think we're ready for the next step in our lives. I'm not going to take any bullshit from you saying that were too young, okay?"

"I-I'm sorry. It's been a while since I've seen you. Maybe I could see you again sometime soon? I miss my little girl."

"You haven't seen me or spoken to me in six years. I didn't think you cared."

"I didn't know where you were."

"You could've called me."

"I didn't have your number. I just called you because you put your number on the back of the sticky note."

"Oh. I'm sorry, mum."

"Sweetheart, it's fine. And by the way, your dad and I got a divorce. I'm happier now, and you don't have to worry about me laying a hand on you or either of the babies."

"You will have to help out with them."

"I will, definitely, but why do you say it like that?"

"I'm coming over, I'll explain then."

I couldn't believe I was putting my trust in my mum again. She can't just push herself back into my life after not caring to be in it for six years.

------

As I arrived at her house, she ran out to greet me. In all honesty, I did miss her. I just didn't miss her actions. I could tell now she had completely changed.

"Mum.. I've missed you so much," I told her honestly as we walked inside.

"I've missed you too," she hugged me again, "now what were you saying about on the phone?"

"Um, let's sit down," I patted the couch next to me. This house brought back so many memories, good and bad.

"Hayley, what's going on?"

"Mum, I told you to sit down. Come on."

"Fine," she agreed. After she sat down, I began to explain.

"I have six months to live," I mumbled.

"Sorry?" She looked at me, "what did you say?"

"I have six months to live," I said clearer.

"What do you mean?" Her breathing sped up a little.

"I'm going to die in six months."

"I finally meet up with my only daughter after not seeing her for six years and she tells me she's going to leave me soon? Hayley.."

"It's not my fault, mum. I'm really worried."

"Don't be worried. You'll be fine, and you'll be in a better place," she told me.

"That's not what I'm worried about."

"Then what are you worried about?"

"Calum.. And the twins."

"Oh my god," she looked down and put her hand in her forehead, "I completely forgot about the twins. Speaking of, how are you feeling?"

"I've been throwing up a little," I shrugged, "nothing major yet."

"I can't believe my baby is pregnant," she smiled.

"What will happen to Calum though? What if the twins don't make it?"

"Don't talk that way. Don't, Hayley. We'll deal with that when the day comes, okay?"

"Okay," I began to cry. I didn't want to hurt Calum. When I go, I will have ruined his life. By taking his girlfriend and his two children, or by taking his girlfriend and leaving him with his two children, maybe leaving him with one and taking the other. I don't want to know. I felt so bad.

"Hayley, sweetie, don't cry," mum hugged me.

"Calum and I had so many plans.. I've ruined his life," I cried.

"You did not ruin his life. You're giving him two children, two things to remember you by. He will love those kids more than anything."

"Yeah," I smiled, picturing Calum with our kids. I then pictured him showing them my grave when they get older. I pushed that thought away and thought happy things again. But happy things don't always happen, do they?
