Chapter Thirty Eight
Heatwave gripped the wheel as he narrowed his eyes, urging the car to go faster as Kade held on for dear life. He wasn't aware that the cons had taken a back road towards the city. The truck groaned in protest as he pushed it to go uphill. Kade was anxious but knew better than to say anything at this point. They managed to get up the hill and he sped towards the cabin. He was gripping the wheel so tightly it looked as though hit would snap.
"Come on, come on." he muttered as he continued to drive quickly towards the cabin. He got there and saw a few cop cars. They were looking at a dead man on the ground, he quickly parked. Heatwave barley turned the car off before he jumped out of the car and ran over to them.
"Where's the fire?" Strongarm asked and he glared at her, not knowing if she was intending to jest or not. He glanced to the shed which had its door closed and chained. He walked to it and couldn't see into the windows. Ironhide saw him and furrowed his brow a little.
"We haven't attempted to get in yet, possible traps." He said seriously and glanced to the dead man. "Why would he kill his own teammate?" He mumbled to himself as Heatwave looked at the door again.
"Because he made him angry." The firefighter growled and went to his truck. He grabbed his ax from the truck and smashed it into the door handle. The other cops yelled at him to stop in case there was a bomb or something. He chopped the handle off where the chain was and kicked at the door.
"Heatwave stop!" Ironhide yelled as he grabbed his ax and pulled it out of his hand. "It could be rigged! Don't make me restrain you!" He said angrily as the fireman rammed his shoulder into the door. It snapped open and he gained his footing as he looked inside. The group stared in horror with wide eyes at the scene.
"Get a medic!" Ironhide boomed as Heatwave went inside without another thought. The young musician was covered in blood and still hanging from the rafters. His shirt ripped to shreds and on the floor with his shoes and socks. The firefighter went to his brother and gently gripped his face with his gloved hands.
"Sounds? Sounders?" He asked as he fought back tears then looked to the beam above him. "Soundwave!" He cried when he didn't respond. Ironhide rushed over and hacked at the chain with the firefighters ax. Heatwave undid the ropes at the mans feet, causing the weights to fall off. Ironhide managed to break the chain and Heatwave caught his brother then lowered him to the ground. He knelt there as he held on to him tightly. He quickly put his jacket around him to keep him from getting cold.
"Come on Soundwave... come on wake up." He pleaded as he rubbed the young mans cheek with his hand to get him to respond. "Don't you do this to me again." He seethed angrily through gritted teeth as tears filled his eyes. "Don't you dare do this to me." He choked as he held his baby brother. This was the second time he had held his brother as he died, the first was during the attack on the city. This was the third time he lost his brother to his father's actions.
"Soundwave! Wake up!" He cried as his tears fell down his face. The others outside watched quietly and Ironhide wanted to help somehow. But he couldn't.
"Wake up little brother... please." He choked as he buried his face in his neck. He felt anger and hurt gripping his heart as he held on to him tightly. "Don't leave me again... come on Sounders... wake up..." he sobbed as he shook with grief. Not caring that his brothers blood stained his clothing.
"Heat... wave...." his brother rasped and the firefighter looked at him with relief on his face. He choked back a sob as he half laughed and hugged his brother close.
"Stop doing this to me Sounders... I can't take any more of this." He muttered as he held on to him. His brother smiled weakly and slowly gripped his arm as he shook, his body starting to register the pains.
"I... mom... where...." he wheezed and his older brother shook his head as he held on to him.
"I don't know..." he muttered and glanced towards the doorway as an ambulance showed up. A cop ran over to tell them he found a backroad.
"You get to the hospital. I'll find Beta." Ironhide said seriously as he looked at them. Heatwave nodded slowly and thanked him. The cop stared for a moment before walking out. Shouting orders to the others on where to go and who was staying.
There had been a fallen tree that went across the road when they were driving after Megatron and Soundwave. It took far too long to move it, and they discovered it had been cut. Rodimus had gone to their check point with his brother for safety and left Ironhide in charge. The cops headed out, half going the way down the main road while the others went down the back way. Ironhide narrowed his eyes as he drove ahead and quickly. He was going to put this man in jail for everything he did. The cop saw someone running down the road a little ways off and he furrowed his brow.
"Megatron?" He mumbled and stopped him. "What are you doing?" He asked and glared darkly.
"Going for an evening jog because I was bored." He snapped sarcastically as he was forced to stop. "No I'm chasing Tarn and his group, they have Beta." He seethed angrily and looked at him.
"Get in." Ironhide muttered and he did so, getting in the front without thinking before they drove off quickly, nearly reaching fifty within seconds. The cop suddenly realized how dumb it was to have an ex-con in the front seat. He ignored it for now as they drove. The silence was awkward.
"Why did you do it?" Ironhide finally asked as they drove. Megatrons mind went back to the many crimes he committed.
"To-"
"Why did you kill my brothers wife?" He clarified and the con looked at him for a moment. "Elita, Megatron." He snapped. "Why did you kill Elita, my wife's sister?" He growled angrily. Megatron studied him then looked outside the window before staring at his hands.
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you." He muttered as he remembered the incident. Ironhide tightened his grip on the wheel as he shook with anger.
"What? You think you have a good reason to kill someone? What was it? Revenge? What did Optimus do to deserve-"
"It was an accident." He interrupted and looked at him. "I never wanted to harm her... or Optimus." He said seriously.
"That's a load of b-"
"You asked, so let me finish." He said and narrowed his eyes. "Natasha, my second wife, manipulated me and... my first wife..." he trailed off as he thought of Ashley. He really had to let her go. "She manipulated me into turning to a life of crime and continued to influence me. She went so far as to kidnap my children and destroy them. I was furious and finally snapped. I went after her and intended on ending her life." He explained. "Only problem was... she had the exact same car as Elita... she tricked me and I..." he paused as he remembered ramming into the car, with all the anger in the world. Getting out and seeing that it wasn't Natasha. His horror and dread as he tried to help but had killed them.
"Do you really expect me or anyone to believe you?" Ironhide asked and narrowed his eyes. Megatron stared at him then looked towards the dark woods.
"No... I don't expect you or anyone else to." He said seriously, recognizing the pain in the mans eyes and expression. He was silent once more as he stared blankly and thought.
They soon came to the downward slope where a police barricade was on the cable bridge before the city. They were at the half way point and Tarns car was speeding towards them. Megatron tensed as they used road spikes all along the road. Ironhide and the other cops screeched up behind Tarns car and blocked him from turning around. Helex stopped the car, half way between either barricade. Rodimus got out of the car and pulled out the megaphone.
"Step out of the car with your hands up!" He said as they all aimed their guns at the car. He knew they couldn't fire with the hostages inside. Helex gripped the wheel and glanced to their bullet proof glass. He looked to Tarn who glanced to the two in the back.
"You may want to duck down." He said calmly and Nickel nodded slowly before going to the floor. Beta looked at them then to the cops outside, before glancing back towards the woods. She saw Megatron getting out with a few others. She hesitated and glanced back to Tarn who glared at her. A shiver ran down her spine. If she got out, the cops could take them down without hesitation.
"Don't you dare." He growled lowly as he aimed the gun at her. She glanced over to the cops and knew their shredded tires wouldn't get them far. Tarn glanced towards the barricade ahead of them.
"No stopping once we go." He said seriously and Helex shifted into gear before hitting the gas. Beta opened the door and kicked it open before she leaped out. "No!" Tarn yelled and shot at her, only hitting the seat. She hit the road and rolled as she heard Tarn shout at her.
"Beta!" Megatron cried as he watched and his eyes widened. Their car rammed into the barricade and caught some air. Soaring above the cops and rolling before it hit the ground, landing on its roof and sliding to a stop a few yards behind the cops.
Megatron glanced to Ironhide before they ran towards the injured woman and others recovered from the cars jump. Megatron helped her up and looked over her. He saw she had Soundwaves jacket on and he wondered where the boy was. He looked at her and hugged her gently. They heard shots and glanced to the wreckage where the cons were still fighting. Megatron growled and ran towards the barricade.
"Megatron!" Beta screamed and reached for him. Ironhide made sure the cops took her to safety and ran after him. It was absolute chaos.
Tarn slowly opened his eyes and grunted as he looked around a little. He growled as he undid his seatbelt and hit the roof of the car. He looked at Helex who was waking up as well. The bigger man muttered something but the lack of tongue made it hard to understand him. He looked over to see the edge of the bridge on his side, and the cops on Helex side. He crawled out and grit his teeth as he grunted before looking over to Nickel. She was trapped in the back under the seats. Her arm reached for the ceiling as she made a pained noise. He grabbed his gun and gave it to Helex who was now using the car as a shield from the cops.
"Cover me." Tarn growled as he went to try and free Nickel. Helex started shooting cops as they got close and they started yelling. "Nickel. Nickel wake up." Tarn said as he grunted and tried to pull her out.
She whimpered in pain and looked at him then moved the best she could. Her leg was stuck and she managed to pull most of herself free. Helex was causing a problem as he became trigger happy and smiled darkly, shooting the cops down. He ran out of bullets and looked to Tarn as he ducked down. The leader pulled out another gun and looked at her, she was stuck.
"We need to go." He growled and his man nodded before Tarn ran towards the edge of the bridge. Helex moved backwards as he continued to shoot. Nickels eyes widened as they started to leave and she wiggled until she got her leg free.
"Tarn!" She screamed as she realized they weren't going to wait. "Tarn wait! Please!" She cried and worked on getting free from the car. Helex ran out of bullets and tossed the gun before glancing at her and running after his boss.
"No! Don't leave me!" She cried as she reached for them. Helex kept running and grunted as the cops shot him. Ironhide and Rodimus glared darkly as they ran towards the wreckage.
They weren't in range to get Tarn. The leader glanced back as Helex fell to the ground, he was dead before he landed. He kept running towards the railing and glanced over to see Megatron running at him. His heart stopped briefly, murder was in the ex-cons eyes.
"Tarn!" Nickel screamed as she half ran and half limped after him. Ironhide grabbed her and wrapped his arms around her to stop her. "Tarn don't leave me!" She screamed as tears fell down her face.
He grabbed the railing and heard the cops yell at him to stop. He only paused when he heard Nickel screaming for him. He was on the rail and glanced back at her as he hesitated. He couldn't leave her. Not with them. Not with him.
"Tarn!" Megatron roared angrily and the villain glanced at him before jumping over the edge towards the water below. The ex-con grabbed the back of his shirt and fell over as the man jumped. Megatron grunted as he grabbed onto a cable and held on to the villain. Tarn looked up at him and narrowed his eyes.
"That monster has made you weak and soft." He seethed angrily through gritted teeth. "Your children have made you pathetic! You used to be a great leader, now look at you." He spat feeling betrayed by his master. Megatron stared at him and narrowed his eyes.
"You're wrong, Tarn. They've made me stronger, and a better man than I was before." He said seriously as he glared at him.
"They'll throw you in jail for the rest of your life if you go back up there." He growled as he looked at him. Megatron didn't respond as he watched him. He knew this would happen.
"I was with you towards the beginning of the mafia... the start of your empire. But I won't go down with you... not with the coward in front of me." He spat and slipped out of his shirt before falling into the river below.
Megatron glared darkly as he watched him fall then glanced towards the top. Some cops were trying to help him back up and he stared blankly, tempted to let go. He almost did but instead grabbed Rodimus by the hand when it was offered. They helped him up and steadied him to make sure he was alright.
"Thank you... for trying and all your help." Rodimus said and he nodded as he glanced to Nickel. She was sitting on the road staring blankly as tears fell down her cheeks. Tarn had abandoned her. He was her father figure and Megatron knew it was hard for the child to accept.
He glanced towards the city where they heard more sirens, he furrowed his brow as the other cops showed up and pointed guns at him. Rodimus yelled at them to stop and that he had it under control. Megatron looked around at the chaos before glancing over and seeing Beta was safe. He sighed shakily and put his hands behind his head. He knelt down and the cops pushed him down to the ground. He grunted as they cuffed him and Beta ran towards him as she yelled at them to stop. Ironhide gently stopped her and tried to comfort her.
"Megatron!" She sobbed as she watched them cuff his hands behind his back. Ironhide hugged her as Rodimus spoke to the mayor who showed up, looking smug about the situation.
The ex-con stared blankly as the others talked and argued. He turned his head away to look off the bridge and towards the water. It was calming and he felt himself slipping into his own world to drown the noise. The Decepticons were all but gone and extinct. He sighed shakily and closed his eyes.
The children were safe, Beta was safe, everyone was safe now. He didn't have to be a hero anymore. He didn't have to fight.
It was over.

The End...
