chapter 66 - parallels

im back binches

I wake up warm. It's back normal again. I feel so stiff. Oh boy. I wanna go back to sleep, but at the sounds of stifled sobs I manage to stay.

"d- d- dammit- it was hypothermia- now she's gone t- to sleep and heartbeat's s- so weak- i- i- i don't know what to do- she's gonna d- die unless i c- can- but i can't- stars, how c- could i fail ya so damn badly?" I open my eyes. The brightness of the light makes my head hurt. The pain hits me. I glitch.

"Gnnn..." He sits up with a gasp.

"o- oh my god- you're alive-" He pulls me up into a tight, terrified hug. "i thought you were gonna- you- i thought i-" He stutters, trying to find the right words. I hug him back.

"Well... You must have done something right... because I'm alive, right?" I shrug. Sans considers it for a moment, and starts to calm down, nodding to my logic. "I'm fine now, and so are you, right?" I frown after a moment passes. "Riiiiight?"

"well..."

"Sans!" I say, exasperated. "What did you do?"

"i, uh, they tried to take me away, but i fought back. i needed to know, needed to..." He sighs and continues. "i can't heal myself." I open my eyes and gasp. He turns away to show what happened.

"Oh my stars! Your skull!" Nearly a quarter is crushed. I hold my hands to my mouth. "It- It's-" I reach out and barely brush my hand against the broken bone.

"F-!" He grabs my wrist reflexively, grip strong enough to nearly break it. "don't. touch." I try to pull my hand away. A moment feels like a minute.

"S... Sans?" I take a deep breath, trying not to shake. "Yo- you're scaring me." I try to pull my hand away, and in turn touch the break again. Sans, with a short gasp of pain, jerks my wrist in a direction it's not supposed to go.

SNAP. I scream in pain. Sans jumps and lets go, turning back towards me. "oh stars i'm so sorry i didn't mean to-" I hold my wrist close, tears flowing down my face. With a shuddering breath, I kick him away and curl up protectively. Ow. Ow. Ow. Oh stars. OW. I can't let him near me. It's happening all over again.

I can hear his voice, and start shouting, hoping someone will come. "NO, no, Liam get aWAY don't hurt me please I just want to go home don't hurt me don't hurt me don't hurt me I can't do it again-" I keep rambling, mumbling and slurring through the pain.

Faintly I can tell Sans says something, maybe in a memory or just a thought?

"I can't do it again I'm not strong enough I can't I can't I CAN'T just leave me be just let me be just go away leave me alone I want to go home don't hurt me not again please please please please please-" I take in a long gasp of air as hands take my wrist. I immediately go silent, hoping that compliance means they don't hurt it again. The movement sends pain shooting through me and, more glitches.

Instead, healing magic flows through me and for a second, I feel better. I blink away the tears. The bone heals, bit by bit, until-

My arm is ripped out of his grasp, sending a new wave of pain through my wrist. Another, audible crack sounds. Liam. The real him. He starts to drag me down the hall. My hand lays at an odd angle as I try to get to my feet but he's going too fast. The movements are coupled with pain, as usual. Back to the chair. And it... heals me? What? That can't be ri-

SNAP. Both my wrists. I scream, tears coming to my eyes. Heal. Break again. Heal again, break again, heal snap heal snap. My voice hurts. I glitch, avoiding a break. Liam scowls. "This again, hm? I thought you might have learned last time~ guess not." He takes out a knife, a long dagger sharpened to cut. He puts it against my throat.

"P- pleas- No, no, I didn't mean to- I can't control-" It goes through fast and powerful enough to knock my head back. And, leaving it in, Liam heals me. Tentatively, I take a breath. Difficult, but possible. ........and I can't talk. I open my mouth, trying to say something or scream, something, but nothing comes out, just a hoarse breath. The breaksnap-heal goes on, each snap getting a little harsher as time goes on. Until it's my entire arm. It gets healed one last time, then he uncuffs me and personally snaps my radius and ulna in half(that's the forearm bones. Really painful, I assure you.)

He drags me by the snapped arm back to the cell, kicking me in so I land on my ribs, knocking the wind out of me and pushing the dagger in a little. I try to gasp for air as the soulparts glitch even more. Black spots impair my vision, from the lack of oxygen or the pain, I don't know.

I try to call out for Sans, but barely a whisper comes out. Right. I can't talk, can barely breathe(even in comparison to while it was just the dagger) and my arm is broken. Great.

"oh sh...oot." Desperately I try again to suck in air. He starts to heal the broken bone. Too weak to continue trying to stand, I fall, and the dagger tears a bigger hole in my throat.

Oh no oh no oh no what the hell did he do to her!? I pick up her arm again. I can see bone. That's not good. I gulp and take the knife, focusing my healing magic on the throat wound. It heals, no more blood inside or outside I hope. But that doesn't matter right now. I delicately take the arm and shift it back to where it's supposed to go. The sound makes me flinch. Stars, that looks and sounds painful.

It startles Dex awake and her mouth opens in a silent, pained scream. Gosh, I feel so bad... But this will help. I heal the arm. "looks like that's everything." She sits up. "you okay now?" Dex nods and starts to say something. No noise comes out. Slightly surprised, she shakes her head and touches her throat. "are you good at charades?" She shrugs sheepishly. "ok, well, just try."

"what's still wrong?" She shrugs. "you don't know?" She nods, but puts a thoughtful look on her face and lifts a finger. "however..." Point to self and that weird yoga breathing thing. "i, or, well, you... can breathe?" She stops and nods. "well, that's good. but you can't talk." Shrug. "yes, of course it's bad!" A sigh. "guess you're okay. that's somethin."

Then she heals my skull...Without touching it. Damn, I feel so bad. Gaster and Liam come in to take us away and... take the cuffs off. I rub my wrists. It hurts, but it feels good, yanno? Anyway, I walk out into The Room. Dex is there too. The doors lock behind us. Uh... okay.

"hey, kid!" She just glances around, confused and a little scared. "er... hello?" No response. It's like she doesn't even see me. "yknow, i think i might have enough in me to teleport us outta here.." She summons a knife. Is there something I'm not seeing here? A ghost? Wait, can there even be ghosts if you're already dead?

My thoughts are cut off by the magic slashing at me. My reflexes are barely enough to dodge. "wait, kid, what are you doing!?"

dex pov

Liam brings me into The Room, cuffs deactivated and magic free. But why? I glance around. It doesn't look normal. There's blood spattered on the walls. I look down and jump backwards. James. It's James. No, he can't be here, much less (double killed? Ehh who cares)! James was a good person. I look up. And there, covered in blood, stands the one and only Sans. He holds his hand out at me, a neutral grin resting and unchanging. It's scary. This version of Sans has always emoted very strongly. There's nothing. Just like the game.

I summon a bone knife and slash at him before he can attack me too. "You killed him! How could you?" I try to say. Nothing comes out. I attack him again. How could he kill James again!? And James doesn't even belong here, for real! The worst thing he did was beat me at Mario Kart. I pull his soul towards me using blue magic. I don't say anything, but I let my expression contain all he needs to know. After all, he's sooo good at reading them.

I keep attacking, and he keeps dodging. Faintly, I hear what I'm putting off as a memory of his voice. I feint left and stab him in the collarbone, shutting my eyes tight. His movement is restricted by the shock, and I just keep fighting. I open my eyes and swing one last time. He catches my fist and I, confused, glance around. This is the Room...? James is nowhere to be seen and Sans is only bloody because of.....the...stab wound. His fingers relax and his eyesockets close as he passes out. I catch him. Oh no, oh no, what have I done? I start to heal the wound and cracks. Some kind of whiplash stops me and sends a wave of pain into my soul. I stagger back, glitching. I try again. The glitch gets worse. But I'm determined.

I continue to try and heal despite the glitches, and end up successful. His HP is back up to 1, but I keep glitching after it ends. I shut my eyes and scream. Someone's there. They stick something on my soul. For a moment, my glitches calm. Then, for a single second, it feels like my body and soul are being torn apart atom for atom. I sit up, still glitching but back together(mostly). I blink a few times.

"Sans!" My voice works again! "Sans, oh my stars, I'm so sorry, I-"

"it's fine." He heaves himself up, and helps me stand. "what did they show you for you to...?"

"James. He was here and you... killed him."

"oh."

"But... that wasn't real, right? James is still alive."

"hell if i know. sure hope so."

"Yeah." His eyes brighten.

"wait, your voice is back!" I touch my throat.

"It is!" I realize. "I can talk, yay!"

"And," I freeze at the voice. "You can scream too, Sweets." Sans grabs my hand.

"come on. there's still no cuffs, i think i have enough magic to teleport us outside." He explains. I nod. He focuses his magic.

Liam pulls me away and into a headlock a moment before the teleport.

"wa-" Sans starts before he finishes teleporting. The headlock becomes a chokehold. I kick and struggle, but eventually the lack of air becomes too much.
