Chapter 27 - The Ebott Attack
Dextria POV
September 23, 2019
I wake up in a hospital bed and groan. "What happened?" I stretch. I have... A lot of scars. My parents are nearby, sleeping in chairs. Hmm... What's the last thing I remember? Oh, yes. I tripped and fell down a hole when I was out with my friends. And then I woke up here. A nurse comes in to draw blood.
It's not long before I can go home. Apparently I was gone and unconscious for just over a year. Man, that has to be some kind of record. The longest I've slept before is like... 10 or 11 hours. And I have missed a lot. The monsters were freed! Without me! One day, I decide to head to the mall. I haven't had chocolate in OVER A YEAR. Insane, right? Good thing I have money.

I stand inside the old-fashioned candy store with some chocolate bars in hand. While waiting in line, I feel someone watching me. I am very paranoid about being in public, despite my portrayed attitude. Outside, I see someone looking inside... are they looking at me? I hope not.
I see another odd-looking person while I pretend to look at clothes. On my way to the bookstore, I see a third, but I recognise the face. Liam. I've managed mostly to avoid him, but there he is, by the bubblegum dispensers. I nervously start to eat some of my chocolate and casually go to the other side of the walkway, but I notice him seeming to follow me. I go a little faster, not caring that I passed the bookstore already.
A white hand pulls me into a store. "hey, kid, he bothering you too much?" It's the second one. I look at him confused, and yank my hand away.
"I can handle myself." Why must my voice shake at the worst possible times? "Now if you'll excuse me." I turn and walk away from the store. When I look back, I see it's a spider-themed bakery called Little Miss Muffet's. Huh. Must be new. I'll have to try it sometime.
I glance back again. That weird guy and Liam seem to be arguing. Well. I'm not gonna break it up. They both deserve it if they get kicked out. When I glance back again, they're gone.
I bike straight home, freaked out. But not before buying some books first. I don't see any of them again.
I don't watch the news, though later I wish I did. Because in the morning, everything changes for the worse.

Since our city is right by Mt Ebott, we get the worst of it. I get a phone notification- an alert reading WWIII. What even? I look into it while still in bed, and slip on my glasses. Our news channel is pretty reliable. Hmm...
According to many world leaders, a new great war has broken out- though this time it's over the new kingdom known as Monsterkind. Many people believe they should be destroyed or brought back underground. Others believe they deserve life too. What's your side, Ebott City?
Oh, right. Our city changed to Ebott City, didn't it? Anyway. I sit up, get dressed, and walk downstairs for breakfast. I'm the first one up, as usual. And then everything goes to hell.
There's a crashing noise somewhere in the neighborhood and the floor rumbles. "What the-" I hiss. The lights flicker and go out as more unknown noises occur. Our house isn't built for this kind of shaking. We're not on an earthquake fault. Only thinking about my safety, I run outside. And then I see the intensity of everything. I see fire. I see people in armor. "Hey!" I shout, jogging towards one. "What's going-" Then I'm knocked back to the ground by the force of something.
"Stop in the name of the monsters! Do not resist!" Who are they!? I slowly stand. I'm not wounded... Just dirty and a little hurt. Whoever they are, they've run off already. I turn back towards my house as there's another crash-boom and a shake. I watch as it collapses, open-mouthed.
The reasonable voice in my head is unaffected and strong as ever. They're going to go looking for survivors. I should hide. That way, I can get some revenge. I put my hair into a ponytail and drop into a creek. It goes under the storm drains at a height tall enough for me to mostly walk into. It's been pretty dry, so there isn't much water for me to try and avoid. I stay down in the cool- well, I guess it's kind of a sewer- for the rest of what happens.
I hear footsteps lightly echoing. If only I had some kind of weapon... And then one appears in my hand. "Here kitty kitty... Wouldn't want any bad hiding humans, now would we?" Asks the high-pitched voice. I clench my fist around the knife thing and leap out to stab whoever it is. It seems to be a bunny rabbit. I twist the blade and it turns to dust. I would be okay with doing this more often. Something tingles in me. I sift the stuff through my fingers and pick up their radio. I change my voice to be high pitched.
"Nothing in the sewers." I tell them.
"Roger that."
No one else comes. That afternoon, when everything seems to be done, I leave. Thinking I'm a monster there to ambush them, the police aim their guns at me. A very weird feeling. I put my arms up.
"Hey, I'm on your side here. I was hiding from them. Even killed one, see?" I show them the dust on my hands. The officers put their guns away.
"Right, sorry young lady. You understand. We have to be on edge in case those brutes come back."
"Of course. Although," I look around and see the smoking heaps that were the houses in the neighborhood. Few are left standing. "I want to join the anti-monster forces. Not much else to do." They nod.
"There's a group of other teens like you headed towards the school. That's where the Red Cross and AMF went. Maybe you can catch up with them." I nod.
"Thank you." I run up to them. I don't know them well, other than my older brother James. I'm not here to be social, though. I'm here to get revenge.
Gun training is hard, but they say I'm a natural. I'm pretty cool with most things. I'm a good shot, I can sprint okay, and I'm a pretty good strategist too. Not like James, who's super quick, or Conni, who never misses her mark. No, I'm average at everything.
My first battle is a deepwater raid on some place called Lavadale. I tend to use my gun to wound, and I stab them to kill. It's more satisfying that way. I've never felt so useful. I burst into a door, leading two others. A green fire elemental and three others are sitting at a table, oblivious. We each shoot one, and then I stab the fire one with a bone knife. She manages to get away.
"Don't pursue her. She should die soon anyway." I turn around and hear something in our helmet intercoms.
"Report back to transport. Area cleared."
That mission and many more are successful. Then we can't find them. Monsters seem to disappear. And then so do we. People go missing overnight, or their soulless bodies are found in the mornings. We assume the monsters are doing it. When I wake up, James is found dead. I frown. He'd promised to give me running tips today. He had a blue soul. I look at all the pictures. The known number of monsters is close to the death count this week. I point this out.

"They're preparing for something. Monsters probably absorbed their souls." I'm lucky. The higher ups saw my potential(and my odd magical abilities) and allowed me partial command. "Have any scouts found any traces of them?"
"We caught a radio wave saying something about the field down south by that weird black and green farmhouse. I say we check it out." I slowly nod and the highest authority speaks.
"Three o' clock. Be prepared, just in case we find more monsters than before." I give a curt nod.
"I'll warn them." I leave and tell the others the news, then go sit on my cot. What's happening to me? This isn't normal me... Normal me is optimistic, doesn't get sad. She would insult Liam and walk away all proper-like, and wouldn't hurt a soul. Me, though... Why am I so scared all the time? Always scared or mourning.
Must be the monster attacks getting me on edge. Well. It'll all be over at 3pm today anyway, for better or for worse.
We wear tall combat boots and fingerless gloves, as well as a breastplate. Then on that breastplate is my name- Dex- and underneath, is something that basically looks like a C- in a circle. Then there's a helmet, with a fancy old visor. It harnesses your soul so you can see souls. For instance, you can see the color of someone else's soul and check their HP or LV. I put it on and strap my gun to my side. I test out the weird knife thing and throw it at the target across the room. It hits and disappears. I walk outside. It's almost three by now anyways. We should get going.
Across from us on the field are just what we thought. Monsters. I flip my visor down and look at their souls. Each one has 2 or more LV. And each one is combined with a human soul.
Sans POV
I didn't like the idea of taking all the human souls. But Toriel insisted we had to. This war was exactly what we were fearing. However, Toriel has been good at it. We've lost civilians, but we've also killed more humans overall. I scan the ranks of humans. All the soul colors are there. Most of them have LV.
I summon a bone into my hand and await the command. I've used my teleporting abilities to avoid getting hit. This is the most advanced so far. They have technology galore and a few even are rumored to seem to have some form of magic. Then I hear a yell from the other side.
"CHARGE!" And so do we. The two armies clash, and I'm shooting bones or blasters left and right. Screams and battle cries fill the air. It smells like dust and blood. Then from a few feet away, I'm facing what seems to be a familiar face. It's hard to tell with all the visors and such.
"You're that one dude from the mall." She flicks her visor up. No. This isn't...? Her voice is so... monotone. I relax my posture a little bit subconsciously. "You killed James, didn't you? That's the color of his soul, after all. Hmm. That's too bad. You would have been quite a gentleman."
"d... dextria dreemurr?" She frowns a little and her eyes narrow.
"Hello. My name is Assistant Commander Dextria Wilson. You killed my brother. Prepare to die. Heh. I always did like that movie." She walks closer, careful not to trip over a body.
"kid, why are you fighting for them?" She stops, a little confused.
"You're acting like you know me."
"because i do. i'm your best friend. how do you think you got your magic? it's me, sans." From her expression, she's remembering something. Yes... She has a bone knife appear in hand and looks at it, thoughtful, then back up at me. "don't you remember?" She smiles.
"Sans... Oh, how do I say this?" She lets out a short laugh and flips her visor back down. She's going to fight for us now, isn't she? "Ah, yes." Then there's a sharp pain in my shoulder blade. "Go burn in hell, you dirty brother killer." She's... Stabbed me. Dex rips the knife out while slashing across my ribcage. Just like the genocide runs. But this... This is outright betrayal. I drop to a knee and put a hand to the wound. It's red. Through skeleton magic, I cough a bit of blood up too.
"y- you..." She kneels down in front of me.
"I don't know you. But I hate you." She catches something from the air. "Oh. Why don't you have this?" She sets whatever it is around my head. I rip it off and stare at it, eyes widening. It's a red and yellow bandanna. Papyrus's bandanna.
"no..."
"I wonder how it feels." She stands up. "You're not worth my time." And my old friend walks away to leave me dying. Another monster bends down to help heal me. I think about everything. How could she do this? How could she just... forget? I stand up and look around. There's more dust and bodies. I catch sight of the kid as she makes a lethal blow to a Froggit. She sneaks up behind a scarfless Papyrus. It must have just fallen off. I feel a little relieved, but... She's about to kill him, isn't she? I take a deep breath and at the last second, use soul magic on her. She skids to the ground a few yards away. Papyrus, distracted by the noise, kicks the human into another human in another fight and turns towards us.
"SANS? IS THAT MY BANDANNA?"
"oh, yeah, i wanted to give it back." He takes it and puts it on.
"DO YOU THINK WE'RE WINNING?" He asks. I sigh.
"i dunno." I hear a grunt and get hit in the arm by a bullet.
"SANS!" I wince and grab the wound.
"i'll- urgh- be fine."
"HOW DARE YOU HURT SANS!" Papyrus turns towards the human holding the gun and readies himself for battle. I see who it is and feel the eyelights thinning.
"no, wait, don't-!"
The skeleton throws a bone attack at her, impaling her in spots and knocking the helmet off. Papyrus freezes open-mouthed. Dex doesn't move from the ground. Just lies there lifelessly, as the remaining monsters turn to stare at the familiar face that once saved them all.
In the shock of everything, I look around. This is reminding me of the stories from the war. The sky was clouded with dust and the ground ran with rivers of blood. I'm seeing a similar view here.
"HUMAN!?" Toriel turns and gasps.
"Child!?" The rest of the humans take this chance to retreat. Toriel runs up to the unconscious human and starts to heal her. "There has to be some mistake, the child wouldn't ever..." I teleport closer and put a hand on the goat's shoulder.
"we suspected she didn't remember us, but... it's worse than we thought." I shake my head. "she hates us, tori. she's the assistant commander of these guys." Toriel looks up at me. "she tried to kill me."
