Yellow

Leila:

The sky above would be yellow for obvious reasons.

Pollution.

Yellow sky was not a particular characteristic she was looking forward to.The city was way different from the East and that bothered her. In all her daydreams, this is how she imagined the Capitol to be since when she was a young girl and she would soon be visiting it in a few days for the Trials.

All her life, she had lived in the East. The kingdom she lived in had 4 quadrants and the capitol city at the center, the very heart of the kingdom itself. The royals lived there peacefully and ruled with a wise council to advise them on everyday decisions.

As an Easterner, she had grown up under the shadow of the Capitol being the place that everyone (mostly young people) wanted to be because things happened there at a pace that could not be comprehended by the passerby's eye.

The four regions of the kingdom were as follows in no particular order: North, East, South and West. They each contributed an equal amount for the whole kingdom and had specific exports that they distributed among themselves.

As the East was a temperate region outlined by coastal shore lines and windy days, they busied themselves with fish, dyes, textiles, paper and various other agriculture products. Flat expanse lay for miles where she called home and she loved it there! During the day, the wind blowing her hair back while she gazed upon her village from the field near the seashore was an austere sight, almost as wonderful as being out in that field at night.

Power for the Easterners came from the wind, literally. They harnessed wind power in windmills so easily because to wield the wind was in the veins of the people who resided here. Even Leila was a wielder of the wind and had been taught at an early age how to control it. It would not do for a lady of her ranking to not be properly trained in the ways of her people. Her family would simply not allow it, especially as they were part of the Ruthless Four.

However, the East was but one part of the land they called home. In the North, ice reigned and fire wielders were tasked with mastering a savage tundra by building machines and fanning fires that would beat the cold on a winter's day. They did all of the manufacturing for the whole kingdom and in doing so, produced smoke that could be seen from way off. She had heard that those people for all the warmth they possessed in their fingertips were most frightening and cold-hearted to those not from their region. Indeed, the previous ruling family from their kingdom had come from the icy North.

To the South of the Capitol, lay what was called the South, what else would it be called, she thought to herself. It was a mix of tropical jungle and gentle rivers that confused her dearly as to how they could blend so well. Water wielders lived there and used the plentiful water at hand to not only grow fruits and vegetables not found in the East, but produce the most beautiful plants known to man. Here lay the land where agriculture bloomed and most of the common meat not found in the woods were grown in that rain forest, all natural of course. They were extremely close to nature and their source of power was hydroelectric power.

The West was another story altogether. There in the West, an expanse of mountains grew and needs became more primal. In this part of the kingdom, where thick woods grew and wild beasts were shot, most from other regions dared not to go. The plateau that led to it seemed decent enough, but the mountains were unforgiving with two seasons, winter and summer. The mountain people, who were wielders of earth, produced the minerals that were valuable to the economy of the kingdom. Their main products were hunted animals and precious stones.

Just to think that she would step foot in the capitol which were for so long had been an enigma to her! This would be so as reaching the capitol was a little tricky because in the middle of this peaceful kingdom lay a desert and it just so happened that the city inside the desert resides on the only oasis in the desert. Some called the desert The Yellow Expanse as nothing lived there and it was quite large in area. One would wonder why the Capitol should be where all come to die, but it must have been nature's way of showing that even in the desert, flowers could bloom. That must be why the Capitol was nicknamed The Desert Flower.

Maybe there in the Capitol, she could find a friend who liked reading as much as her or appreciated looking up at the stars at night without plotting for new fields in the distance. She found farming to be a tad dull so she was glad that her family worked on textiles and dyes. The different colors all arranged on a single piece of cloth, if bathed properly in the morning sunlight, shone a prism of rainbows to any onlookers who happened to pass by.

Speaking of onlookers, it had only been last month at the annual SunRise Festival, where the Easterners appreciate the spring returning to their land, that she had spotted someone who had seemed interested in her. He happened to compliment her on her floral dress so she politely thanked him and went on her way without letting her blush show on her face. Who could possibly be the tall and handsome man that had caused her to feel warm inside?

She wondered if he liked reading at all. Probably not. A gorgeous man like that spent his time looking at a mirror and asking girls around. Not contemplating the existence of stars in the universe.

But a girl can dream, right?
