I can't forget the moment

that night

when I woke up drowning.

The moment that my fears

surged forwards like the

tidal waves of a winter storm -

crashed with malice

against the rocks of my mind;

sea spray leaking from the

corners of my eyes.

I can't forget the moment

that night

when I woke up drowning.

The moment when waves

swollen with 'what ifs',

pulled my flailing frame

beneath my mind's surface;

held me under the tides

until I forgot what it was to

breathe.

I can't forget the moment

that night.

You see,

no matter how many times

I say the word 'drowning',

it refuses

to lose

it's meaning.
