four hours left

April 12th, 2020

"Soulmates are dumb."

You remembered how you mumbled that sentence to your parents when you were twelve years old and here you are again, saying the same thing six years after. In a few hours, you were finally turning 18 and you were finally going to see how long it was going to take before you meet the one. The looks on their faces were painted with worry and concern, their grips on their spoons tightened as they watched their daughter grabbing another spoon of chocolate ice cream.

You shoved the ice cream in your mouth, kind of hoping that you get the same excitement as your parents had before you said something. "Honey, aren't you glad you'll be meeting your soulmate though?" your mother tilted her head, dipping her spoon on the ice cream and placing it on your father's cup.

"Well, I'm excited to meet them but... I don't know, mom..." you sighed trying to think of an excuse. "I don't want to think about it..."

In all honesty, you were just too uninterested and it would probably still take a long time before you would be able to know who your soulmate is. Your (eye color) orbs intently stared at the spoon, causing it to levitate in the air.

One of the things you do for fun is pretending you do not have a quirk and scaring people that you do witchcraft to be able to levitate things. Most of your past classmates believed your lie but others, they had to bother you a lot to get the truth out. Of course, you did have a quirk but it was not a notable one and definitely not the type for hero work.

Truth be told, being a hero never really crossed your mind.

The light was dim and you were starting to space out again that your mother had to hold your hand to cut off your concentration of the levitating spoon in front of you. You muttered a small apology before standing up, feeling the cold table wood with your hands and excusing yourself to go back to your room.

Still, even after your parents tried to convince you, you still think soulmates are dumb.

one hour left

Kyoka Jiro called your number for 5 times now and you didn't bother to pick up until the sixth call showed up on the screen of your phone. The light illuminating off the piece of technology brightened your darkened room. You were throwing a tennis ball into the wall in front of your bed and catching it as it bounces back to you. You swiped 'answer' and hearing Kyoka's tongue click on the other line.

"Took you long enough, (your name)," she said in annoyance and even if you couldn't see it, you could hear the shuffles on cloth on the background signaling that she was crossing her arms at you. "Sorry, I was busy ignoring calls today. Anyway, what's up?" you continued to throw a tennis ball on the wall, hearing the girl sigh on the other line.

"Happy Birthday, (your name)," Kyoka greeted unenthusiastically exploding her mini poppers that would probably be heard by her next door dorm neighbor or something. "Aren't you a little too loud there, hero?" you chuckled as you trapped your phone in between your head and shoulder, standing up to look out the window.

"Not really," Kyoka shrugged as she laid back down on her bed. "Besides, I'm excited to see how many years you've got until you see your soulmate."

"Hm, probably long enough for me to keep my records clean,"

The street outside was quiet and the moon up in the sky glowed brightly as its light entered your room. You could hear the muffled voices of your parents cleaning downstairs and Kyoka's breathing as she tried to think of something else to say. You were only getting older by the minute and you closed your eyes as you held your phone in your hand again, and the opening them to check the time on your wristwatch.

60 seconds

"You ready?"

"Sort of?" you sat on your bed and watched the bedroom ceiling filled with tattered paint and tiny cracks. "You know, (your name), I still think you deserve to be a hero," Kyoka said out of nowhere, twirling the pencil on her hand as she continued to write down the remainders of her homework.

"Nah, still doesn't cut it for me," you chuckled as you raised your arm, watching your slender fingers as the tried to reach up to the ceiling. "What if your soulmate wants to be a hero?"

"Then, let them do what they want," you raised your shoulders carefully. "I don't mind it."

"There's only 5 seconds left, (your name)."

Four.

You felt your heart pick up its pace as you waited for what most kids probably anticipated for their whole lives beside their quirks showing up. The darkness of your room was lit up by the moonlight and you smiled at the thought of feeling nervous about it.

You didn't care, right?

Three.

Why were you nervous?

Two.

Do you really think it's stupid?

One.

Will they really be the one for you?

April 13th, 2020

"(Your name), it's April 13th. You are officially eighteen!" Kyoka squealed on the other line as you continued to close your eyes, still nervous as to how much time you have to prepare before you can see your soulmate. You opened up your eyes to see a hologram timer right in front of you. You held out your hand to touch it, only for your hand to pass through.

Gosh, am I an idiot? you thought as you watched your own hand slip through. Upon seeing the date, your eyes widened and your mouth fell agape, erupting a small sigh which caused Kyoka to worry.

"(Your name)?"

"10 days, Kyoka..."

"What?"

"I only have 10 days before I can meet my soulmate."

Shit. And you thought this was stupid.

But somewhere out in this strange, moonlit evening, sat a certain male on his dorm room. He had celebrated his birthday a few months earlier but his timer read; unknown. Now, at first, he didn't know what that meant but after asking people he knew, he learned that his soulmate hadn't turned 18 yet.

That is, until today.

He sat up on his bed, staring at the hologram, rubbing his heterochromic eyes as if he thought he was dreaming about it. But there it finally was.

April 13, 2020. His soulmate had finally turned 18. And somewhere in this stone cold Earth, she was seeing the same number of days as him. All they needed to do now was to either find each other by chance or wait until the day arrives. He ran his fingers through his evenly split hair and sighed as he grabbed his phone at the side.

"Ten days," he quietly murmured as he typed something in the search engine of his phone.

'Who just turned 18 on April 13? Japan area please'

Of course, he would receive no luck in finding you in a random search engine, right? You both stared at the ceiling of your respective rooms, watching the hologram over and over again. The frown on your face was the exact opposite of the twitching smile of your soulmate. But if he was so excited to finally meet and be with you, you wished that you could say the same to him.

Because you sure as hell weren't ready for it.
