Chapter 8
After Abby ranted about the hot guy in the party, whose name was Dustin, I slept around 1. That was a peaceful night after a long week. I found out later, that they exchanged numbers. The classes were getting busy as days went. Today we were going for job hunt. There were many convenience stores , cafes and libraries around the city.
We all got job at cafe , Mocha shots, the cafe stands the prime for various office goers and the high school students. Lucas and I were given after noon shifts , while others had night shift till 10. Our next stop was library, it was always my dream to work in a library, an epitome of peacefulness among the booming outside.
The first one we arrived was the most established one. I was nervous as I entered the building. I was notified most of the our college students use this place as their part time job. The well infrastructure and friendly staff gave off a positive feeling. The interview took an hour to be completed. Unfortunately, they decided to select Matt among us and some other students interviewed.
Dejected was the thing I was feeling. We strolled around the city searching places for places until we came across a small alley. There was a library with lights flickering on the name board. I looked at my friends, "Shall we try it?". They hesitated for a bit, "What do we get earning her? And the place looks a little scary too. Lets search some other places", Abby said and all of them started walking. Disappointment washed through me as I stood , staring at the somewhat scary library.
"I want to try this one", I said managing them to turn around. "What?", Abby continued, " That place looks scary and I don't wanna work in there". I turned towards others looking at them for any support. "If that's what she wants, let her do it", Matt turned towards me, "Can you do it alone?". My face lit up as I nod quickly.
The library was pretty much dark compared to the previous one. There was on old man sitting in the reception area watching TV. First impression; way too much dust and scary. The old man gave us a questioning look as he saw us entering. "Welcome, what do you want ? Do you want a membership? It's $20 a month", he said before we opened our mouth.
"I am here for a job", his expression changed to a bored one in an instant. "We don't have any job openings. Don't you see there's no one in here? Why do you even want to work here?", he said sitting down. "Can we see manager or someone in charge?", Lucas asked the old man. "Son, I am in charge. This is my library", he said wiping his thick glasses. "Can't you give me a job? I desperately want to work in a library and I think yours fulfills every wish of mine. Can you please think about it?", I asked slightly bending my knees, holding my hands together like praying and gave him my best pleady eyes.
He was looking at me and waved his hand. "Okay, fine. But I can't pay you much.". I started jumping with happiness. "Just give me how much you can", I said. He got my number and we talked about the timings. I was assigned to work for two hours in the evening and I would have an hour to take the shift at the cafe. I was dancing all my way to apartment while my friends were teasing me for being a child.
The entire next day, I was anticipating for my job at library and my other job started next week. It wasn't like I was a book person but I liked being in warm place that gives out peace. Sometimes, libraries surprised me giving a thought of speaking various languages, cultures, tragedies, love, horror and so one. All of the human emotions were confined within a single room. Everything positive was nullified by a negative creating a neutral world for itself. I just couldn't believe I thought that.
I threw in my jeans and sweatshirt, grabbed my purse and got ready for my first day work. Ralph, the manager cum owner of the library, toured me various sections of the library and told me everything that would be done by me. I was ecstatic, jumping on my feet along the whole tour. I couldn't wait to be alone with the books. The first task was to clean the floor. Well, it turns out cleaning the floor was much more difficult than I thought.
Ralph was behind my back the whole time, showing the nuke and corners to be wiped out. I tried to control my irritation, while Ralph was finding fault even if I walked. Turns out he was a difficult person to work under. After wiping the floors clean for an hour, I finally get to be alone. I brushed past the books with my fingers.
I remembered the days, I used to get books for Matt and how that made me addicted to library. Even if Matt to take it himself, I would make sure I would accompany him to the library. A smile crept on my lips remembering those beautiful memories. Ralph suddenly popped up his head into the aisle scaring the shit out of me.
"Wipe the racks, young lady", he said pointing between me and the racks with a scorn face. Well, that was how my first day went. Wiping off.
