After Ben's death. Louis rested for nearly 16 hours even through Tommy was away at school. 

That whole week Louis did not have any trouble sleeping.

Louis surprisely felt normal. Louis no longer needed Tommy's presence for a good night

As Louis sat in his patrol car; Ben crossed his mind but Louis didn't feel remorse for Ben or guilt. He only felt relief. Louis smiled every time  knowing that his justice system didn't  fail. One less monster wasn't around.

That week the talk around Greenleaf was Don Carlo(a local mobster)was finally going to put away. One of his ex crew member Billy Goode was set to testify against him at the end of the week at court. Don was looking at the death penalty for the 25 charges against him including murder and rape.

Fearing that Don would try too take out Billy or his family. Three cops watched Billy's house all day and night. Louis was set too watch the house during the evenings with his stake out partner James which was a middle age black guy. A few years away from retiring

"You heard about Ben, Lou?" James asked 

"No I haven't" Louis responded

" They find him died on parking brench outside of Concord, North Carolina. They said his head was smashed. His ex wife said he got into trouble with the wrong guys. She said it was probably Don's crew." James replied as he watched  two teenagers come out of their house and start throwing a football back and forth between them.

"Dang that's terrible" Louis said trying to show some remorse

Two jogs ran pass the front of the police car. Both were wear a hydration backpack

" You know Lou, I wanted to ask you something for awhile now. Just between me and you; did Ben....." James said but was interrupted  from one of the  teenagers throwing the football at the car's window. 

" Watch it kid" James yelled out the window

Louis looked out the rear view and noticed that one of the joggers wasn't wear his hydration backpack and they were sprinting fast down the street
Louis quickly look for the teenagers but they disappeared 

"James get out the car!" Louis shouted as he realized that something was wrong.

Time seemed to slow down. As Louis swiftfully jump out the car.  James could not move as quickly so the blast sent him flying across the street.

Louis ran too assist James and called for backup up on the radio 

As Louis checked to see if James was alive, James looked up and with the last bit of strength that he had, pointed at Billy's front door. Three men ran into his house.
