Chapter 27
Narrator's pov
-
Summer was the first person out of the car, leaving her parents to fend behind. The girl slammed the car door shut as her feet pounded against the pavement, heading up the stone pathway
It was a warm and inviting house from the outside, a lavender coloured paint brushed the wooden house. A white fence guarded around freshly trimmed grass, green as the spring time leaves, cluttering around a small garden of colourful Lillie's and daisy's along the yard
Summer walked up to the white painted door and gave it a few knocks as her parents approached her from behind
"Seems like you and Melanie have gotten close for you to hustle out the car like that" her father said
"You could say that" Summer mumbled
The door swung open and a smile met her eyes, the dark skinned man grinned as he welcomed his arms open
"Summer, nice to see you again" the pastor greeted, extending his arms for a hug
To be polite, Summer faked her smile and leaned into his arms, feeling them wrap around her back for a few seconds
"Nice to see you too pastor Robbins" the girl said
"Well come on inside" he said, gesturing for the few to enter the house
Summer's parents were no stranger to the home but it was the girl's first time coming over
The house had large arched windows. Through them light flowed through all seasons, gracing the air without favour, illuminating the sweet-toffee browns of the wooden floor
It was welcoming from the open door to the wide hallway. Upon the walls were the photographs of the family obviously so 'loved'
Summer's fingers glided over the picture frame, a smile graced her lips as her eyes landed on a picture of Melanie as a child. Even so small the girl had a disgusted look on her face as she stared at the camera. Summer chuckled when her eyes landed on another, this time of the girl going down a slide. She only had two front teeth visible and in the moment she looked so happy
The floor was an old-fashioned parquet with a blend of deep homely browns and the walls were the greens of summer gardens meeting a bold white baseboard
The banister was a twirl of a branch, tamed by the carpenter's hand, it's grain flowing as water might, in waves of comforting woodland hues. Under the lamp-shine it was nature's art, something that soothed right to the soul
"I see you've been decorating" The girl's mother said
"All the hands of the wife, she's in the kitchen if you'd like to see her" The man said
Summer's mother flashed a smile before turning the corner to head towards the kitchen
Her father on the other hand had already taken a seat on the sofa, kicking his feet up on the cushion and had his eyes fixed on the tv
Yep. They were no strangers to this house at all
"Melanie is in the backyard if you're looking for her" The man said, gesturung towards the door past the kitchen
"Thank you" the girl muttered, heading towards the area
She tried her best to not be noticed when quickly dashing through the kitchen, avoiding any glances over the two women who laughed
Luckily the back door was already opened so she managed to slip right out with ease
Summer's eyes landed on the scenery in front of her. The backyard was a miniature woodland of holly trees and native shrubs, each of them trimmed as if they were green flames
To move about them was a sort of music, a poetry that could not be spoken in words
The grass moved as a heaven-weaved quilt of the earth, as if by root and stem it stood in protection of what mattered
The flowers were a dancing rainbow, as if light and music had found a new way to blossom together
She watched and absorb the sweet birdsong as if it were nectar. It brought her peace to the nature's walk. These were the simple joys of the backyard that was rich in nature
Her eyes then landed on Melanie. The girl's back was turned to face her.
Melanie's hair was as waves of pure earth, softly reflecting the light of the sun, each strand moving freely in an ocean born breeze, a compliment to her stillness
With eyes of river waters, in glossy serenity, her aura seeped into the summer air between them
Beautiful. The one word that would always come to mind when she thought about the brunette. Simply beautiful, especially when she didn't try at all
She sat on a swing that was quite still upon its ropes, as if she was enjoying a meditative dream
Her fingers wrapped around the ropes as her feet barely pushed itself against the grass, swinging her in mid air
Melanie smiled as she approached the girl from behind, making sure not to make a single noise
Her arms wrapped around Melanie's torso as she placed her chin on the tip of the girl's shoulder
Melanie's eyes widened for a second but her body relaxed into the girl's touch the second she felt it, as if it knew the girl anywhere despite not seeing her there
She melted into Summer, allowing her body to sink into the girl's arms and the warmth of her body seep into her skin
Summer's warm breath brushed against the girl's ear, sending a shocking wave down to the pit of the girl's stomach
"Hi" She whispered
"Hi" Melanie said
As if God graffitied rainbow-flame upon the evening sky, the sunset came in its boldest blaze
The sun set in the sky as fresh colours brushed upon an artist's canvas, as if those rays were destined to create a great work of art , one given to those open to capturing simple moments in the soul
The two girls had been completely caught up with each other-
"Wait. What are you doing!?" Melanie finally caught herself, realizing the position she was in
"Trying to hold you" Summer chuckled
It took a bit longer for the girl to realize than she thought but she enjoyed the few seconds she had
That was before Melanie started to struggle out from under her
"If you struggle then I'll pick you up"
"You wouldn't" Melanie scoffed, trying to force her arms out from under Summer
"You testing me Robbins?"
"I'm telling you that you wouldn- SUMMER"
The raven hair girl had hooked her arms around the girl's body firmly as she pulled her backwards, of the swing and into the girl
"SUMMER HARLOW"
"Sounds like your future wife's name right there" She smirked
The raven hair girl then started to walk towards the backyard porch with Melanie balancing in her air from her grip
"SUMMMERR PUT ME DOWN"
"Alright" She smirked
Summer collapsed onto the outdoor sofa chair on the porch with Melanie in her arms
She pulled the girl over her body and held her in a slight bridal style
Melanie's legs were resting on hers while she landed on top of the girl's chest, her arms draped across her shoulder
"Summer!"
"Yes my love?" She smirked
The brunette rolled her eyes at the brown eyed girl
The girl then tried to escape once more, struggling to break her arms free from Summer's grip but failing miserably
"Oh what's the point" Melanie groaned
"I love to see bottoms accepting their faith"
"Excuse me?" Melanie questioned
"Oh you heard me sweetheart" Summer smirked
The brunette girl simply rolled her eyes and accepted that she couldn't escape even if she tried
But she knew exactly how she felt in the moment
Despite her bickering, there was a warm and comforting feeling invading her body
Summer's arms around her felt like her safe space, a feeling she only endured when the girl touched her
Part of her body screamed to be held while she put up a fight everytime
Little did Summer know that she was the most homely thing that Melanie ever endured
