Chapter 14
Narrator's pov
-
Events happen and people are never the same afterwards. It could be the simplest things like someone else blowing out your candles on your birthday
Or that one family get-together that ends in a fight between two aunts
Events happen and people are never the same
Which is exactly why Summer was on edge and in her own world
"Come on Summer, talk to me" Her father said
The girl had her head leaning against the window with her chin on her knuckles
"You haven't spoken to anyone since you came home from school Friday, is something wrong? Who do I have to report!" he said
"Nothing" Summer mumbled
It had been two days since her kiss with the brunette girl, and now it was Sunday. Her father had agreed to take her early to the church so she could start her cleaning that she agreed to
But the memories still lingered, flashbacks back and had her insides tingling at the image
Remembering Melanie's arms hooked around her neck, pushing her in deeper in attempt to taste her on her lips
Their heaving chests pressed together, desperate for air but a tension pulling them back in
But with the flutter in her chest, brought a bad butterflies
Melanie left that day without saying a word. Summer had no answers, no questions, nothing for the past two days
Just an empty letter to the unknown
What made her even nervous was the fact that she would see the girl later today in church
If she even stuck around
Summer had a plan to ditch the church service after cleaning and reappear when it was over
All in attempts to avoid the girl
The truth was, she couldn't get Melanie off her mind and she knew it
In the beginning, she kept thinking about the girl because of her annoyance and the many times her parents would brag about the girl
"oh Melanie won this award at the church fair' or 'Melanie got voted best student for blah blah blah" it was simply annoying
Especially seeing her face everywhere she went. To the beach, to restaurants, to classes. It was overwhelming frustrating
But now she couldn't get the girl off her mind
The image of her called to her emotions, Melanie's beauty always had her heart but now it was intoxicating. Her smile, almost rare to find but when spotted... It was the sunrise over mountains, touching the tip of earthy rocks and bringing light to these below
Her laugh stood out in the middle of a club, so unique and fulfilling, bringing a smile to anyone who listened
Her eyes the soul of the earth, where no man had polluted with misery. For it was untouched and innocent, the brown soil that bloomed sweet nectar flowers when awake
When she was calm, being in her company was like watching the sunset over the horizon. It's orange specks radiating like her soul across those who witnessed it. A warm and inviting feeling before settling into peace
She craved to see her once more but the anxiety of what what happen next to enough to warn her away
"Alright, we'll come back later. Hope you have fun"
"Cleaning a church at 3 in the morning?" She scoffed
"Exactly. Bye Summer" He grinned watching the girl leave the car
"Bye" she muttered
The girl then turned the gates, pushing the iron fences open and entering the compound
The lawns were neatly cut, splendidly rich green. The statues of angels were also clean, which was odd considering the dust and dirt would stain it for the week it's been out
The girl then noticed a crack in the church nose, pushing opening slightly showing that it was already open
The girl's knuckles tapped against the door, before pushing it open
"Hello?" she asked
The church lights weren't on, the entire room had been pitch black and cold
Summer shrugged as she entered, her fingers looking around for the switch on the wall
After flipping the switch, she noticed a bucket at the head of the church and a mop bracing against the chairs
She rolled her eyes knowing damn well they had set out the stuff for her to use the second she got there
"How considerate and welcoming, get right to fucking work" She groaned but immediately caught herself
"Sorry god" she mumbled
"You know. You really should work on that" a voice said
Summers eyes immediately went wide as she eyes started to scan the room frantically
"Who's there! I have a speech about climate change and a mop and I'm not afraid to use it!"
The person then giggled, Summer's heart fluttered in her chest the sound of the girl's laughter once more
"Relax, it's just me" She said
Melanie then appeared from a backroom, through the side door
She wore an oversized t shirt, one that hung down her collar bone and exposed her skin slightly
Followed by soft, grey cotton shorts. Her hair was tied into one so that the few strands wouldn't come close to her face
It gave sight to her bare eyes and freckles, each a unique part of the girl
Summer sucked in a breath as her eyes trailed down the girl's body
"You- um. What are you.. Doing here?" She asked
"Well, your father asked my dad if I could help you out and since it was my idea in the first place... He agreed" She mumbled
"oh" Summer mumbled
Silence fell over the girls again, this time a heavy feeling filled the room. Their eyes avoided each other completely, neither wanting to say a word
Perhaps they were now remembering the events of a few days ago
"I. Um. I'll just.. Start" Summer mumbled, taking the wooden stick between her finger
"Oh yeah, yeah.. I'll... Clean the office" Melanie said
But before Summer could respond, the brunette had spun on her heels and moved quickly through the side down towards the hallway
Summer sighed as she collected a broom first, her hands wrapped around the wooden stick as she started to sweep the dust aside
Fear. Summer had feared the girl's response for so long. She had no idea what was going through the girl's mind ever since that day
She could be disgusted by her presence and only pretended because of her father
It must have felt like a chore to come here in the first place. Hell, she was even avoiding her by going to clean the office
Who the hell cleans the office now, it's the church entrance that needed help in the first place
But what if that wasn't the case? What if she actually liked it..
"No way in hell" Summer muttered under breath
Why give herself hope either way. Melanie was the pastor's daughter
The pastor's daughter for God sakes
Why would she even think she had a slight chance at something with her
The same girl that called her disgusting just a few days ago
The same girl that told her, her life was a choice and needed to be changed
Why. Why out of everyone, it had to be here that Summer's heart responded to
A girl that wouldn't want her even if she was the last person standing on earth
Simply because she was a woman
