Chapter 4
They started walking down the street. The streetlights lit up as the sun sunk below the horizon. Pete focused on the cracks in the cement before the silence started eating him up.
"Where are we going?" He turned his head to look at Patrick.
"There's this place I know not far from here. I have a feeling you've never been there."
"And why would you think that?" Pete asked pretending to be offended.
"Seems like you don't go out and cut loose like this very often," Patrick answered with a shrug. Pete frowned. He got out plenty, Brendon made sure of it. "Now enough questions. Tell me about yourself."
"What do you want to know?"
"Anything. Right now all I know is your first name." Pete smiled and looked back to the ground.
"Actually my name is Peter, but I like Pete better." Patrick chuckled. "Peter Lewis Kingston Wentz III."
"The third?" Patrick laughed while Pete nodded.
"I know it sounds stupid."
"No it doesn't. It's just different," Patrick said still shining his smile.
"Well, what's your full name?"
"Patrick Martin Stumph," he answered proudly.
"I guess your parents didn't want to be too extra with your name."
"They went all out on my sisters name. Uma Trinity Stumph."
"Uma? Like the actress?" Patrick nodded. "Is she your only sibling?"
"Yeah, she's awesome. What about you? Any siblings?" Pete chuckled nervously. He looked over his shoulder to Ryan. He was given an encouraging nod before looking over at Patrick.
"Only child. Parents got divorced not long after having me, so no time to have another kid," Pete said with a shrug. He saw Patrick frown and knew what was coming. It's a main reason he never told people about that. He didn't like pity. "Don't feel bad or anything. It happened so long ago. I'm used to it now."
Patrick nodded and slowed his pace till he came to a stop. Pete did the same, but more hesitant. He turned to Patrick with confusion. From the corner of his eye, he could see how Ryan and Brendon were equally confused. Brendon was looking around the building for any clue about what's going on.
"We're here." Pete turned to the building Patrick pointed at. In the window, Pete saw a neon sign. It wasn't on which made it hard for Pete to read.
"MCRcade?" Patrick smiled and nodded. Pete pointed at the closed sign, adding to his confusion.
"Not for us." He walked to the door and knocked on the glass. It wasn't long before a man with bright red hair opened the door.
"Patrick! Come on in" The man moved aside to let them in. He looked Pete up and down as he passed him.
"Thanks Gee." Pete looked around the room, taking in all the flashing lights from the endless arcade games. He noticed a snack bar beside the counter with countless prizes. Pete turned after he heard Patrick speaking quietly. "Shut up."
The red hair guy had on the biggest smirk while Patrick was almost as red as the man's hair. Gee gave Patrick a playful shove before heading to the room behind the snack bar. Patrick gave Pete a shy smile and led him to an empty table.
"How'd you manage to do this?"
"Gerard and I went to school together. Now he owns this arcade and I get free tokens whenever I want."
"So you come here often?" Pete asked.
"Is that a cheesy pick up line that's supposed to make me fall for you or something," Patrick smirked. Pete leaned closer and dropped his voice when he spoke.
"It can be if you want it to be." Patrick looked caught off guard at Pete's sudden change in manner. It wasn't the same playful teasing they'd done before. The sound of Ryan clearing his throat caused Pete to snap his head to his direction.
Ryan and Brendon were sitting at the table beside him. Brendon was giving him a big thumbs up with the widest grin on his face while Ryan was shaking his head. When Pete faced back to Patrick, he saw the boy looking over at the table he was just facing in confusion. He ran a hand through his hair and cleared his throat.
"Sorry, I, uh." his thoughts ran quietly through his head not allowing him to form a sentence. Pete needed to remind himself this wasn't just another one night stand. He let out a sigh and ran his hand through his hair again.
"You okay?" Patrick looked at Pete with concern.
"Yeah. I'm fine," Pete nodded. "I just, um." Pete was relieved when Gerard came back into the room. He put a large pepperoni pizza in between the two.
"Thanks Gee." Patrick smiled up at Gerard. The red head sent Patrick a wink before leaving the room again. "You like pizza?" Patrick asked as he picked up a slice.
"Who doesn't like pizza?" Pete smiled and reached for his own slice. As they ate their way through the pizza, they joked back and forth. When Pete's sexual nature would surface, Ryan would get his attention and get him to stop. Brendon encouraged it, earning himself a few hits from Ryan.
Gerard came out and sat with them at one point during the night. Pete enjoyed the conversation and heard some stories about Patrick in his younger days. He also found out how Patrick persuaded Gerard to open up the arcade.
"Yeah, it was either this or a comic book store and as you can see the arcade won. I run it with my brother and couple of other friends." Pete nodded and looked around again. He could see how kids would use this place as a hangout.
"It's really nice."
"Thanks. Alright, I gotta head out. LynZ and I are going out tonight." Gerard reached into his pocket and handed Patrick a set of keys. "Lock up when you leave will ya." Patrick nodded and took the keys.
"He seems really cool," Pete said once Gerard was gone.
"He is. He's one of my best friends. He actually let me help him pick out some of the games in here."
"Oh yeah? Which one's your favorite?" Patrick scanned the room before landing on a game in the middle of the room. He turned back to Pete with a wide smile.
Ten minutes after raiding Gerard's office for tokens, Pete and Patrick where at opposite ends of the air hockey table. Patrick put a coin into the slot and grabbed the puck that came out of the dispenser. The air blew over their hands holding the paddles.
"Ready to lose?" Patrick joked. Pete shook his head smiling. When Patrick hit the puck, Pete hit it against the wall at the perfect angle for it to bounce off a go into the goal. Patrick looked at Pete in shock.
"Beginner's luck," Pete said with a smile. Patrick gave a determined look as he put the puck back on the table. Pete managed to score two more points after fighting hard against Patrick. Brendon was cheering him on more with every point.
"I'm just warming up," Patrick mumbled. Pete nodded encouragingly. When Pete moved his puck a little too far to the right, the puck slide past him and into the goal. Patrick shouted excitedly. Pete watched as the boy celebrated with a small dance. He'd never seen someone so happy about scoring. "Told you, just warming up."
As they continued the game, Pete moved his hand too far one way or too slowly resulting in more points against him. He couldn't help it when Patrick would do his victory dance after he scored. When Patrick won the game, Pete knew he'd continue sabotaging himself to see that man's smile.
During their last game, Pete made sure to score more than his previous games. Patrick was full of concentration, determined to go undefeated. When the puck slide into the goal, Patrick celebrated again. Pete sat back and watched him. A part of him felt like he won too as he watched the boy.
"I'm back with a madness. I'm a champion." Patrick sung to himself. Pete listened to the lyrics of the unfamiliar song. "I can do anything. Champion."
"You suck." Pete turned to see Brendon pouting and crossing his arms. Pete chuckled and rolled his eyes.
"You did that on purpose, didn't you?" Ryan asked with a smile. Pete smiled over at Patrick as he finished up his dance. That was enough of an answer for Ryan.
"Alright don't rub it in," Pete said jokingly.
"Sorry. I used to play this all the time when the arcade first opened. Guess I haven't lost my touch." He gathered all the tickets he'd won and walked over to Pete. "How about I get you a prize?"
Before Pete could answer, Patrick was leading him to the counter with prizes. Pete looked over the different toys hanging on the wall. His eyes stopped at giant stuffed animal hanging near in the corner. With a smile, Pete looked over at Patrick and pointed to one.
"That one?" Patrick confirmed when he hopped over the counter. He unclipped it and walked back to Pete. "Alright Panda, meet Peter." Pete chuckled at Patrick's introduction. "Peter, Panda." Pete took the bear when Patrick handed it to him. His arms wrapped around its neck as he pressed it against his side.
"Peter panda," Patrick repeated with a smile. Pete was gleaming from the panda. He'd always been a secret sucker for big stuffed animals. "I like the sound of that." Pete felt a blush when Patrick repeated himself a third time. He couldn't deny that he liked the nickname coming from Patrick's mouth.
