Inherit the Stars

Dedicated to @blue___22 of course. Gotta Read 'Em All 2016. It's gotta be Christmas themed apparently, so here I go putting it in December. I hope that works. It's three parts, for added hype.

Inherit the Stars

Cosmo usually didn't like his he was referred to as 'Cosmo'. He, short, skinny, and green-eyed, was only known as 'Cosmo'. He wasn't much if anything else to anyone. All his friends called him Cosmo. His teachers all just called him Cosmo.

All he ever thought of himself as...was Cosmo.

Cosmo could only come up with one legitimate reason. That reason had to be his uncle. Because Cosmo had his uncle, he was just Cosmo.

Cosmo's uncle was probably the most ideal uncle you could think of. When you've got an uncle who has a nice house next to the ocean, two sports cars, and money to spare, you're pretty much set for all those holidays he can spend money on you. Does Cosmo's birthday even count as a holiday?

It did. Cosmo's birthday was Presidents Day.

It's kind of difficult to understand why Cosmo hated being 'Cosmo'. But perhaps a bit of an explanation was needed. Cosmo...was missing a few things.

One was his biological parents. He had no idea who they were. In fact, it was only by chance that Cosmo's uncle was Cosmo's uncle. Up until meeting his uncle, Cosmo was a wandering student. That is, until a DNA test after a blood transfusion revealed their relation. Cosmo's uncle didn't even know his brother had a child. Or that it even was or had a brother, for that matter.

Second was his last name. Cosmo had no idea his parents were, so the only thing he had was the name they gave him: Cosmo. And that's all it was. Just Cosmo. No hidden secret messages within his name or anything like that. All Cosmo knew was that he was just Cosmo.

Everywhere he looked, he was just Cosmo. The reason Cosmo disliked being referred to as 'Cosmo' was that all that people could call him was 'Cosmo'.

Cosmo was Cosmo. Nothing more, nothing less.

For Cosmo, the reason his uncle was rich was due to the multiple traveling shows that his uncle hosted. Cosmo's uncle was hardly home and the only thing Cosmo had was himself.

Nothing more, nothing less.

The only thing Cosmo could do to not blow his top from being Cosmo was stargaze. For some reason, Cosmo loved the night sky. Whenever the night sky was clear, Cosmo would go to a nearby lookout point at the edge of town and stargaze. If one thing was apparent, Cosmo liked the cosmos.

Even though Cosmo could never see the stars on a Friday (Friday was when his uncle's show aired. He was forced by his uncle to "house-sit"), he would feel exhilarated every time he could enjoy stargazing. It had to be the ability to have a bunch of huge things seem so small. Cosmo had a feeling that the myriad number of stars made him feel special.

For Cosmo, when he could, he enjoyed to talk. When you have a rich uncle who's always away, you tend to read a lot out of sheer boredom and convenience. Consequently, Cosmo had a knack of knowing a bunch of things about a bunch if things, and tended to go on tangents when talking about something. But, all in all, the only reason he did that was because he was lonely. He had no real friends, no real connections to teachers, and, not apparent, no parents.

And all that made up 'Cosmo'.

"Very interesting...the river constellation Eridanus appears clearly around here tomorrow huh..." Cosmo muttered to himself. He was leafing through a book on constellations as he sat in his uncle's study. His uncle's study was where he got all his material to read, and today he found his book on constellations.

"Hmm..." Cosmo muttered to himself. Tomorrow was Friday, and that was probably because today was Thursday. There was clearly a problem with his uncle's scheduling and the universe's.

"Let's see...my choices are a rare constellation or my uncle's show that I can easily find on the internet. Hmm...tough decisions, tough decisions..." Cosmo muttered. He weighed his options, quickly did some solid research, and kept up with the current publications. He decided that, though his uncle's show was the safest choice, the Eridanus constellation was the more favorable choice.

"Aylin it is." he told himself. Cosmo cleaned up his reference materials, took a deep breath, and exhaled. He stretched out his arms, then looked at the time. It was nine-thirty pm. Prime time to go to his clearing to stargaze.

Cosmo made his way down a winding road into a forest at the base of a steep cliff that jutted out at the edge of town. He took the usual route, until he came across to where his path usually went. The area was covered in a layer of marsh liquid of an unknown depth, and he decided that it was unlike of him to get his socks wet.

"It seems I'm at an impasse..." he muttered to himself. He looked to his right, where an old, moss-covered tree stood silently, guarding that direction. To his left was a small, brush-riddled path that appeared to have been traversed through recently. There was no time to weigh his options, so he hastily took the left path.

Through the thorny gorse bushes was a small retreat that overlooked the town. At the edge was a small handrail up to Cosmo's chin (he is pretty short) that was set in a stone that lined the edge of the retreat. It was a nice view of the city, the sky, and the skyline. It was almost as good as Cosmo's spot.

The only thing Cosmo noticed was the other person gazing into the distance while leaning on the handrail. Another person was rare out here, especially at night, and it piqued Cosmo's interest.

"Hello?" Cosmo said. The person turned to him. A girl.

"Hello." the girl said. Silence.

"You looking at the city?" Cosmo asked her. The girl blinked once, then spoke.

"Usually you start with your name. And mine's Celeste." she said.

"Sorry, the name's Cosmo." Cosmo said quickly. Then he spoke again.

"So are you looking at the city?" Cosmo asked again.

"Nope, I'm looking at something much more beautiful. I'm looking at the stars." Celeste answered him.
