AN: here's chapter 5. Enjoy, people.

Lexi's POV:

After school, I began my journey home, holding my thick book. My bag was quite heavy because our evil teachers gave us homework on the first day of school.

Suddenly, I heard the quiet footsteps on someone following me. I didn't quicken my pace or slow down, but pretended I didn't hear them. Instead of going home, I took a random route- hoping to either lose or confuse the follower. Unfortunately, the plan didn't work.

I sighed. I was really hoping to avoid bloodshed today.

I rounded a corner, set my bag on the ground and waited. The person quickly caught up and I punched them on the nose. They grunted and charged at me, wielding a knife. I kicked them in the gut and knocked the knife out of their hand, sending it skittering on the floor. I dived and grabbed it, standing up to face my assailant. Once again, they charged at me like a bull in a China shop. I delicately threw the weapon and it impaled the person in the forehead, sinking to its hilt in their forehead. They barely had time to curse their luck before falling down like a sack of potatoes.

I walked over to the corpse, crinkling my nose in disgust. Using a piece of cloth, I wiped the fingerprints off the knife and checked to make sure there were no security cameras. I had to stay hidden.

I allowed myself a small smile as I turned away from the scene.

Never mess with a girl.
Especially one who used to be in a gang.

"How was your day, Lexi?" Ryan asked at dinner. We were all sitting around the dining table and the atmosphere was tense.

"Quite uneventful," I shrugged, "teachers set a lot of homework."

"Cool," Ryan answered.

The silence was suffocating.

"So Lexi," Noah smirked, "I met someone today. Called Ben Garcia?"

I froze, my grip on the cutlery tightening. My words were stuck in my throat and I stared at a spot on the wall, feeling pure fear settle over me. No...

"He said he was an old friend and was looking for you," Noah continued.

"What did you say?" I whispered hoarsely.

"Nothing," Noah raised an eyebrow, "he seemed pretty dangerous and I didn't want that guy barging in and killing me and my brothers."

My shoulders sagged in relief and I felt my heart rate go back to normal.

"Who is Ben Garcia?" Flynn questioned.

"My assassin. Pass the peas please?"

"Your what?!" I winced as all twelve of them shouted.

"My assassin," I said casually, "he worked with some people I managed to anger and they paid him to take me out. But I'm also under the protection of some powerful people, so there's nothing to worry about... probably."

William blinked, "that doesn't sound very reassuring."

"Oh don't worry," I smiled, "he's only come close to killing me once and Ace-" I swallowed at his name and looked down, embarrassed at the tears pricking my eyes, "uh, never mind. Pass the peas, please."

We heard the door bell ring and heard Juliana- the housekeeper who was a sweet Spanish woman- answer it.

"Lexi!" She called out, "it's for you!"

Puzzled, I went to the door and groaned when I saw who it was.

"You!" I shouted, feeling anger course through my veins.

"Hey Lexi," the Devil smiled, wearing sunglasses even though it wasn't sunny. I wanted to slap him.

"It's Alexandra to you," I growled.

"Why are you glaring at me, Lexi?" He continued, acting like he didn't hear me.

"I'm hoping you'll spontaneously combust," I snapped.

"Lexi, who's this?" Thomas asked, standing behind me. The rest of the brothers followed shortly after.

"Everyone, meet Xavier, or as I like to call him, Idiot or the Devil," I snarled, "what do you want?"

"Have you thought about our deal?" Xavier questioned, ruffling his brown hair.

"I have, actually. You can take that contract and-" then, I proceeded to calmly say a curse that could boil an egg, "then you can bake it in a pie and choke to death on it," I smiled, "wow, that felt good to say."

"Lexi please, we need you!" He begged.

I shook my head, "I've left that life and I'm never going back to it. Goodbye," I turned around.

"What would Ace say?"

I stopped and felt the anger inside me cool down and turn into something much more harder and dangerous. Slowly, I turned around and glared at Xavier. He flinched slightly. Good.

I stalked towards him and slapped him. Hard. Then, I punched his stomach and bruised his face, "never say his name again or I'll kill you."

I pushed him outside and slammed the door in his face.

"I'm stubborn, Lexi!" He shouted, "I won't leave until you come back!"

"And I'm the stubbornest person on this flipping planet!" I screamed back, "and I don't give a damn about the contract!"

I marched back into the dining room and sat at my usual plate. Awkwardly, the brothers sat in theirs. I stabbed the mashed potatoes violently and mumbled dark curses.

"Lexi," Ryan said gently, "I know you're angry, but please don't take it out on the poor potatoes. They didn't do anything to you."

That got a small chuckle out of me, "sorry guys for that scene..."

"It's fine," Kyle responded.

Dinner passed in comfortable silence.

After the meal, I heated a plate of food and went outside. True to his word, Xavier huddled in front of the door, rubbing his hands together and staring at the garden.

I felt a pang of sympathy for him, "hey."

He turned, "hi."

I set the food in front of him, "here's dinner. Eat up quickly and come inside, it's cold out here."

"Does somebody care?" He teased with a roguish smile.

I rolled my eyes and leaned against the wall, "no, I just don't want to have to explain to the others why you froze to death."

He started eating, "I'm sorry for mentioning Ace- that was a low blow."

"It's cool. I'm sorry for punching you."

"I deserved it," he quickly ate and complimented the food. Then, Xavier came inside.

"Goodnight guys," I said to the DeLescos and the DeLaCruzs. For once, they all said goodnight back.

I lead Xavier to the guest bedroom. He smiled softly at me.

"What?" I asked.

"It's good to see you, Lexi," he explained, "and it's nice to see you so happy."

"Thanks Xavvy," I laughed and dodged his punch, "night."

"Goodnight."
