44+ FORTY-FOUR +44
Guanábana still in hand, you search the floor for a stick and pick up the first one you see. Now only needing a good spot to crack the fruit open, you wander through the village and coincidentally begin heading into the direction of the Spanish team. It's totally by chance and not like you want to go over and gloat or something.
Absolutely not.
But before you can make it over, a group of the albino indigenous tapioca packing guys beat you to it. You watch from afar as they kindly help the Spanish onto their feet with the use of very large indigenous cheese knives and start leading them off into the bushes. Oddly enough, one person remains seated and you realize it's Gutiérrez who is refusing to get up. His resistant uprising is short though, as a native man quickly kicks him from behind and in a split second, Gutiérrez is face down in the mud. A few moments pass before your enemy struggles back onto his knees, coughing like he's dying of the plague. By chance your eyes meet, and Gutiérrez's mud-streaked pancake face is hit with instant recognition. His eyes bulge like a goldfish and he starts wildly beckoning at you to come over.
You ignore him completely and move on to eat your fruit somewhere else as the men lead Gutiérrez in the opposite direction of his colleauges. As the last bite of guanábana melts on your tongue, your own team also arrives in the village, accompanied by your trusty friends from earlier. You get up to greet them but when you see the look on their faces, you can tell something is wrong. They are all clearly scared.
You ponder over what you saw earlier and re-evalute that boys question. Friends or foe? What did that mean? Why had none of the Spanish returned from the bushes yet? Why were guanábana so delicious? Why did you get the feeling that the tapioca was a precious commodity on the overseas black-market and rhymed with Boca? What was going on in this village for real?
A latent sense of danger overcomes you and you think about mud pancake face from earlier. Gutiérrez had clearly wanted to tell you something even though you had not the slightest clue what it could be. Right this moment, your team is being brought to the same logs he'd sat on with his team and you know it can't be good. You just can't shake the feeling it has something to do with the fact you'd told the boy the Spanish were your friends.
You quickly think about what to do next.
Look for Gutiérrez and see if he's still alive...err I mean see what he wants to tell you go to 47
Abandon Gutiérrez and go find your team, before they also disappear into the bushes go to 53
