Bryson Tiller as Himself
You as Y/N
"You just got back from college wit them white folk and now you act like you can't hang around us!" Momma yelled at me from the doorway.
My tired eyes squinted at the bright yellow sun shining through my room. I checked the clock. 9 am. I groaned before pulling the duvet back over my face. Why couldn't momma leave me alone for one second?
"I never said that I didn't want to go," I told her brining the duvet back down to my waist.
Sucking her teeth she placed her old hands on her wide hips, "You going to this cookout this afternoon. The whole neighborhood misses you, Y/N." She pleaded.
I stared at my mother's old face. Her dark brown skin had little evidence of wrinkles and I saw some grey hairs trying to poke out of her scalp. She always had this warm aura to her. I loved that about my mother.
"I know that. But, it seems to me like I was the only one willing to leave this place behind after high school. Momma I don't want to see these people no more." I said letting my slight southern accent slip out.
"Don't huff and puff with me girl! You going and that's final. Don't think you ain't old enough to get yo' ass whooped. Breakfast will be ready soon." With that, she left my room.
After breakfast, a knock at the front door sounded. I sighed and adjusted my tank top before looking through the peephole. Mia stood at the door frantically knocking. A smile appeared on my face before opening the door.
"Why you ain't tell me you came home for the summer!" Mia squealed and jumped onto my frame hugging me tightly.
I shrugged and then took in her appearance. Mia was always tall as shit. But she was more than beautiful in my eyes. Her dark skin was glowing and I assumed it was from the heat outside but nah, that was just her. She wore a bright red halter top and some booty shorts.
"Why don't we go up to my room and you can tell me more about the white boys up at Yale." She said pulling me upstairs without leaving me any room to talk.
Of course, everybody knew I ended up at Yale to be a lawyer. I never made a big deal out of it because I never thought I would get in. I just applied as a funny joke. But seeing that I could go and for free, I ran to Yale.
"You know I ain't with that, Mia." I rolled my eyes jokingly.
"And plus I'm focused on my studies," I added laying back on my bed.
"Well, I missed you! I'm assuming that Momma Dee told you about the cookout?" She asked.
"You already know my mother woke me up at the crack of dawn to tell me that."
I checked the time again. It was close to twelve in the afternoon. I knew I needed to get myself ready. All the cookouts in the neighborhood had always been at Mrs. Liz's house. She was older than a sack of dirt. Going on nighty seven years old she was the glue to this neighborhood.
Mia helped me pick out an outfit that she thought was fly, divine and sexy all the time. That was her motto and she lived by it. I giggled the whole time because this girl really knew how to put together the most fly outfit ever from rags. I was glad she decided to go to fashion school in New York.
The outfit matched perfectly with my skin complexion. A yellow halter top that stopped way above my navel with shorts and my floral vans to match. I was definitely uncomfortable with how cropped the top was but whatever Mia said was pretty was true.
By the time we made it to Mrs. Liz's house, it was one o'clock. The sun was at its highest point in the cloudless sky. Music was booming from the DJ's booth. Kids ran up and down the block with ice cream stains on their clothes.
The whole block looked colorful as ever. I nodded my head to the hip hop music as Mia, my mother and myself walked up to Mrs. Liz's front yard. Her house must have been the biggest on the block. Older folks sat on the large porch sipping on their ice-cold water. Some people played cards or were shooting dice on the side.
"Girl I hope you know how to eat some real food after being at Yale for so damn long." Mrs. Liz yelled coming out her front door with her sundress on.
I smiled and ran up the steps to greet her with a hug and kiss on the cheek, "No ma'am. I'm ready to eat."
We talked a little bit more about how college was going before she shooed me off to go yell at some badass kids. The food was yet to be ready but nobody cared about that. Mia and I sat at the picnic table in the front yard with some other girls we went to high school with.
"Then I told that bitch she better stay away from my man!" Godiva said retelling the story of how she was approached by her boyfriend's wife.
I scrunched my face up, "Diva you know that man has a wife. You straight trippin'." I told her as some of the other girls agreed with me.
She rolled her eyes, "Everybody can't be like you, honey. You got your way out. Some of us still searching at the bottom of the barrel."
Mrs. Liz called out that the food was ready. Everyone's ears perked up. I saw the long-ass table filled with de-shucked corn, bbq ribs, greens., fried chicken, mac and cheese, macaroni salad, hot dogs, hamburgers, beans, potato salad and hella other shit. My mouth watered just looking at the table. Of course, we all had to wait because children and the elders got first to pick.
Mia and I stood at the back of the line. There was no rush. There was enough food to food everyone and then some. I fiddled with my nails as the line kept moving. I just didn't realize the person behind me was plotting.
"Excuse me?" The man behind me voiced. I turned my head to the side to see who he was talking to. He was looking dead at me.
"Hi," I said blankly wondering what he wanted.
"I just wanted to let you know that you're beautiful."
"Okay. Thank you." I said dryly.
Mia noticed what was going on and plucked me for not being more interested. I sighed before turning back around to face the man. He had on a simple white tee with a gold chain. His beard was a sight to see. Most importantly his golds flashed in the sun.
"I'm sorry about my attitude. It's just I'm not really looking for anything." I told the truth.
He left me alone. I got the food and sat right back down next to Mia. We all ate in peace and enjoyed each other's company.
"Sis, I think you got an admirer," Jennifer said smacking on her ribs.
I looked around the yard irritated as fuck. I finally saw his face again. He smirked at me showing his gold fronts again and sent me a flashy wink. I blushed and turned around. Godiva perked up and noticed who was staring at me.
"Girl, he a real one. That's Bryson from around my way." She said scooping up the last of her green beans.
"And? He looks older than twenty-one." I said. I couldn't be with anyone older than twenty-one as I was just a shy nineteen.
"He's only twenty-one. Stop being so scared of dick." Godiva spoke again letting her filter flutter away.
"Who said I was scared?" I asked the table knowing damn well I was.
Everyone busted out laughing at my comment. I frowned and sank back into the seat. I finished my food and decided to have a break from them. I threw my trash away and went to go get a soda.
I fished through the bucket looking for a sprite. I cursed when it was nothing but Shasta left. That off-brand ass soda. I settled for the look-alike sprite Shasta. It was good but it wasn't what I wanted. I clicked the cap off before bumping into a hard chest.
"Oh, I'm sorry," I said staring into Bryson's brown eyes.
"It's all good. I'm Bryson." He introduced himself holding his hand out.
I shook his hand feeling butterflies in my stomach, "I know who you are. I'm Y/N."
He licked his lips looking at my face. I was impressed that he never once scanned my entire body. He has respect for women. At least that's what I saw. I hated when grown-ass men scanned me like I was an item at the grocery store.
"And what have you heard about me?" He asked letting go of my hand.
I missed his touch already, "That you were a good guy. I mean I don't know anything about you." I internally groaned at myself. I was out here looking like a fish out of water.
"I'd like to get to know you better...if you let me." He was slick and smooth like oil. I liked that about him. I'd let him slick talk me all day.
"Okay, I'd like that."
"You wanna take a walk around the block?"
And that's just what we did. I was really feeling him at this point. We had talked a lot about life and whatever else was going on. He made me laugh and smile so hard that my face hurt. I crossed my arms around my stomach insecure about the belly I had acquired from eating.
"You good, ma. You ain't got to do all that." He said confidently knowing why I was hiding so much.
"You just make me nervous that's all." I giggled like a schoolgirl.
"Why do I make you nervous. Just relax and be you." He smiled once again flashing his grills.
My panties got a little wet every time he did that. I shifted my feet a little as we continued to walk. A comfortable silence filled the sweet air. I realized how long we'd been walking. For about two hours.
"I'm nervous because you're the first guy that's really interested in me...just me." It felt like a weight was off my shoulders.
I had gone a lot of time dating through my first two years of college. I dated all kinds of races and people. It just never worked. I was always seen as a token or trophy or sometimes even a fetish. I shook my head to get rid of those thoughts.
Bryson just placed his arm around my shoulder and I willingly leaned into his warmth. Even on a hot ass summer day, I felt like I could be on him. By then we made it back to Mrs. Liz's yard. A lot of people had left. I was starting to feel tired and dazed from all that walking.
"Damn, I guess my momma left too," I said noticing that her car was gone.
"I can take you home if you want." Bryson stepped up and said.
He opened the passenger side door for me. I thanked him before basking in the cold air conditioning. He pulled off hella smooth and I told him the directions to my house. Slow soul music came out of his stereo.
"I never got your number," I said as he pulled up to my house.
I handed him my phone and he typed his number in quickly. "I trust that you'll facetime me whenever." He said with high hopes.
"Trust me, I will."
I finally got the courage to look him in the eyes. His lips looked so plump. I wanted to kiss him so badly. My eyes flashed from his lips back to his brown eyes. He must have noticed my eagerness because he chuckled before pulling me close to him by my chin. The kiss was slow and sweet. But I wanted more. That would come later.
"I'll call you in a little bit!" I said exiting the car.
He watched me walk to my front door. And he even stayed until I got inside. I watched him from the front window. I waved goodbye and he pulled off. I sighed sitting on the couch. I still had knots in my stomach from all the butterflies.
"Looks like someone just got a boyfriend," Mia called out from the kitchen.
"And all it took was a long walk around the block." My momma added sipping on some wine.
