Chapter Five
Evelyn's best friend, Dina, came rushing up to her in the coffee shop. "Oh, my God. Have you seen the latest World Star?"
"The next issue isn't due out until next week," Evelyn said, paying for her mocha latte.
"Special edition, girlfriend, and guess who made the front page for a change?"
Evelyn stared at the picture of her kissing Calem as she read, "Personal Chef Evelyn Quinn Gives Fiancé Jackson Brewer, a Taste of His Own Medicine." Special Edition by Sasha Miller.
Evelyn snatched the magazine out of Dina's hand, flipped to the article, and read-
Making a statement. It's not hard to see why Evelyn Quinn chose to make such a public declaration of asserting "two can play the same game" when she kissed a random passerby the other day in front of the condominium that she shares with her fiancé Jackson Brewer.
After months of mistreatment, a little payback seems almost appropriate. That is before Jackson socked the innocent man in the face. A rather cowardly move on his part, proven by the bold slap he received from his own fiancée, for such a barbaric display.
Many have wondered who this man is, but honestly, it could have been anyone it seems. He holds little consequence to the bigger picture. Evelyn Quinn has spoken. She is not going to take Jackson's cheating so lightly anymore. Will the couple reconcile and move on? That remains to be seen.
Perhaps now that Evelyn got a taste of the other side, she may have realized the truth. That the average guy off the street would probably be a better choice for her than her own fiancé.
Evelyn sat at an empty table and stared at the bold truth of Sasha Miller's words.
Dina joined her and flipped the magazine around to see the picture of the random guy Evelyn chose to kiss.
"He's pretty hot," Dina said.
Evelyn broke out of her thoughts and looked at the picture Dina was referring to. It was taken from a different angle. She could see Calem's face before it was messed up by Jackson's fist. She had to admit, Dina was right, from his sandy brown hair to his strong jawline, to his sleek build he was undeniably handsome.
"He looks pretty into you, that's for sure."
Evelyn stared at the photo. At this angle, it was evident she wasn't the only one emotionally taken in by that kiss. They looked like lovers, the way Calem had her wrapped in his embrace. Evelyn could almost feel his warmth as she stared at the picture.
Then there was the picture of Jackson punching Calem in the face. Jackson's face is ugly, contorted in a jealous rage. Calem's head is flung back from the force of the hit.
Evelyn knew Calem wanted her to forget about the whole thing but her guilt ate at her. If only there was something, she could do to make it up to him. If only she could forget the way his lips felt against hers.
"I know that look. You're into him!" Dina shut the magazine to look at the cover again. "You really have no idea who he is?"
Evelyn shook her head no. She didn't want anyone to know that she talked to Calem. She's caused him enough trouble already.
"Pity." Dina pushed the magazine back towards Evelyn.
"And why is that?" Evelyn held up her ringed finger to accentuate her point. "I am engaged to be married, remember?"
"I wish I could forget." Dina's sneer made Evelyn laugh.
"Okay, I know you don't like Jackson, but..."
"What I want to know is, why do you like Jackson? The guy is a total jerk, Evie. He doesn't deserve you."
"He's just... confused right now. All this sudden fame has his head reeling, but I've known him since his championship body-building days. What you read in the papers isn't who he is, not really."
"I know you love the guy, but one day you're going to have to admit that he's changed. The guy you fell in love with is long gone. Honestly, I always thought he was a bit of a narcissistic jerk but somehow you made it work."
"Exactly and am I supposed to throw away all those years we were together just because we hit a rough patch? He's not himself right now, but I can't turn my back on him, not when he needs me the most."
Dina huffed and scowled at her long-term friend. "What about what you need? Are you supposed to forget all your dreams to let him chase his? He's not being careful, Evie."
"I know, but I'm not ready to walk away. Not yet."
Dina looked down at the picture and sighed. "You deserve a guy who will sweep you off your feet. Keep your head up in the clouds. Treats you like the treasure you really are. I don't think that guy is Jackson, but for your sake, I hope I'm wrong."
Evelyn's smile was bittersweet. She wished she could explain why she felt she needed to stay, but she couldn't, because she didn't understand it herself.
After a shopping trip with Dina, Evelyn returned back to her empty apartment. She called Jackson but he didn't pick up. Not that, that was odd. Often, he wouldn't have his phone on him when they were filming on set.
The day of the fight was the day he was leaving New York to fly out to L.A. She was too mad at him to talk about what happened. He was furious with her, which she guessed was the exact reaction she was trying to provoke in him. It was how he made her feel every time she read about him and some other girl.
Before her shift at work, Evelyn needed an outlet for all this tension, so she decided to take a run through the park.
----
Calem stared at the pictures that Kate selected for the feature. He had nearly a 360-degree, panoramic view of him kissing Evelyn or Evelyn kissing him. It was hard to tell who was doing what as they looked very much like a couple caught in a stolen moment. No one looking at that picture would believe they've never met.
Yet, that is what Calem had to convince the world. That he was a random guy picked out of a crowd to exact some revenge. When he thought of it that way it made his stomach turn. He refused to make what they shared into something ugly. That kiss... the way Evelyn's lips felt against his, her hands woven in his hair, her body pressed against him, Calem knew it was a fleeting moment but it left him wanting more.
Calem sighed.
"You did good, kid," Fennick said coming into his office. "You really pulled this team together and did something unprecedented."
"Why do I feel a "but" coming on?"
Fennick's lips pressed together. "You've been scooped."
"What?! How?! By who?!"
Fennick passed him a copy of Know Now, a competing tabloid. There was a picture of Calem and Evelyn on the cover but not of their first kiss. Instead, the picture showed them standing on the street. It was when Evelyn followed him to Ricco's Flippin' Burgers. The picture was taken right when she kissed his cheek but from the way it was taken it was hard to tell that she wasn't kissing his lips.
"You said you weren't going to have any further interaction with her," Fennick accused.
"I didn't... I wasn't... she followed me to the burger place. She got my name from them because of the slip on the takeout I dropped when I took off."
Fennick looked impressed. "Smart girl."
"Yeah."
"But now they have your name, too," Fennick said tapping on the cover of the closed magazine.
Calem flipped to the article inside.
Social Media blew up yesterday when Evelyn Quinn was caught kissing her new beau Calem Decker outside of her apartment. Only their tête-à-tête was interrupted when Evelyn's fiancé Jackson Brewer broke up their passionate embrace.
We learned from Brewer that he had no idea Evelyn was having an affair and he was heartbroken to discover this now, right before he is due to shoot "Kill 'Em All 3" in L.A. Brewer was quoted as saying, "It will be hard to concentrate on the upcoming film but I will press on for my Rip Chiselton fans, who deserve nothing but my best."
So, the question on everyone's mind now is, who is Calem Decker and how long has he been sleeping with Evelyn Quinn behind Jackson Brewer's back? Was this Evelyn saying goodbye or was she consoling Decker until they got together again? It remains to be seen but one thing is for certain, this is no random act like tabloid queen Sasha Miller would like to lead us to believe.
Calem's fist hit the desk with impressive force followed by a stream of obscenities.
"You're a marked man," Fennick said, his countenance mournful as he had such high hopes for Calem and the company.
"Sasha isn't compromised. I'll fix this. I'll figure out a way to make this work."
"I hope you do. Until then you're banned from this office."
"What? How can I..." Calem was stunned into silence, his thoughts racing.
"Look kid, you need to figure out your next move and fast. A story like this has a life of its own and like all good rumors, it's going to spread like wildfire. I can't have you seen coming in and out of here.
I'm trying to protect you. If someone found out about your connection to my magazine, it would be all too easy to put two and two together. I lose you. I lose Sasha. I could very well lose this magazine. I can't take that risk."
Fennick left Calem to figure out his next move. One sentence stood out in the article Calem read. The last sentence. How did his competitor know how Sasha was going to spin the story? How did they know he was going to say his involvement was just a random act?
"Damn it!" Calem threw his pencil holder against the wall smashing it. Janice came running in.
"Hey!" She took a quick look around and saw what had caused the sound. "You okay?"
"No, I'm not okay! I've been scooped!" Calem said picking up the magazine and slamming it back down on the table. "And now I'm banned from the office."
"What? What does that mean? You're not fired, are you?"
Calem immediately calmed realizing he'd scared Janice. She probably feared losing her job. If he wasn't here, he certainly didn't need an assistant.
"No, I'm not fired," he told her coming around the desk to sit on the edge. "I need you here. I'll be working but remotely."
He gave her the article to read. When she got to the end, he could see Janice came to the same conclusion he had. "Are you thinking it's someone on the inside?"
Calem hated the thought but... "It would seem that way. I need you to keep your eyes and ears open for anything that may hint at who has done this. If we don't find the traitor in our midst, we may all be looking for a new job soon. Something like this can kill a company like ours."
Janice took in a deep breath and nodded before exhaling. "What's your next move?"
"I wish I knew," Calem said.
