The end-Jeremy
Alex sat in a plush chair by the window, glowing in the warm spring light. Jeremy had just walked in when he saw her. He froze, debating whether he should say hi or just move silently by. Just then, she looked up. Smiling, she gestured to the seat across from her. What else do I have to lose, he thought.
"How is this second semester treating you?"
Jeremy shrugged. "It's alright. My partner for one of my classes is a total slacker. I guess now I know how you feel."
Alex chuckled, "You weren't a slacker. You were good."
Then an awkward silence fell over them.
"I've been seeing a counselor."
Jeremy winced after the words came out. Alex bit her lip.
"Yeah, I started going after the ball. You know, to deal with the drinking and my mom."
"And how has that been working for you?" Alex asked in a hushed tone.
Jeremy nodded his head. "Great, actually. I've been off the booze and found a healthier outlet. I still miss my mom, but it's gotten easier."
"That's good. I'm really happy for you. What's your new outlet?"
Jeremy gave her a wide grin.
"Boxing."
Alex laughed and covered her face, flustered. Jeremy laughed along with her.
"Maybe we can train sometime?" Jeremy held his breath.
Nodding slowly, she said, "I would like that."
